- Chapter 7 - The Gloomy Boy’s School Idol
Amid intensive preparations, the first city-wide mock entrance exam for high school seniors finally began.
On March 26, the day of the exam, students cleared their classrooms early to set up the testing site. Yu Yan moved Xu Yansheng’s books into the corridor first, then placed his own books right next to them.
Xu Yansheng stared at the thick stack of books on Mechanics, Dynamics, and Scientific Principles with absolute shock. He fought the urge to grab Yu Yan by the neck and ask what on earth he was reading all day long. But despite his annoyance, the exam had to be taken.
Testing rooms were assigned based on the previous grade rankings. There were forty-eight testing rooms in total. Xu Yansheng was in the first room, while Yu Yan was in the thirty-first. They were in different buildings, so for the two days of the exam, they rarely saw each other even though they were both at school.
The day the exam ended fell on a weekend, and the school specially granted a half-day off for the students to relax. While other students were either rushing home or walking in groups, Yu Yan stood out in the crowd as he walked slowly and alone. At least, that was how it looked to Jin Fei.
Jin Fei wove through the crowded corridor and crept up behind Yu Yan, intending to give him a hard slap on the shoulder. However, his hand was caught mid-air. The owner of the hand turned around calmly, his deep voice full of helplessness. “Do you have to be so childish?”
Feeling the warmth on the back of his hand, Jin Fei pulled his arm back as if he had been shocked. He said crossly, “I turned eighteen on the thirteenth of last month. I am not childish at all.”
Hearing the number thirteen, Yu Yan instinctively replied, “Xu Yansheng’s birthday is also on the thirteenth, but it is next month.”
Jin Fei curled his lip in disbelief. “Is there nothing else in your head besides Xu Yansheng?”
Yu Yan answered without a second thought, “No.”
He had come to this world specifically for Xu Yansheng.
Jin Fei felt a bitter pang in his heart. He mimicked a sarcastic tone and said, “Since you like him so much, the two of you must have been together for a long time.”
Yu Yan denied it sincerely. “No.”
With a small, unnoticeable spark of joy, Jin Fei pressed further. “Why? Have you two not been inseparable lately?”
Yu Yan’s voice sounded indulgent. “Because Xu Yansheng is a coward.” He did not yet have the courage to face societal norms. In the original story, he had struggled for a long time before he was willing to hold Li Li’s hand. Li Li could wait, so Yu Yan could certainly wait as well.
At this point, Jin Fei could not help but think of his own heartbreak and his first love that ended in nothing. He wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him, but the boy across the flower bed laughing with a girl in twin tails looked exactly like Song Ze.
Wait, that really was Song Ze! How had he changed girlfriends again?
Jin Fei’s gaze was so intense that it was impossible for Yu Yan not to notice. He followed Jin Fei’s line of sight and saw a flashy, showy boy acting very attentive toward the girl in twin tails. He spoke knowingly. “Is that the boy who made you cry last time?”
Jin Fei nodded. Although he had been crying for his own past blindness, the root cause was still that idiot Song Ze.
Yu Yan, feeling a bit mischievous, curled the corners of his mouth. “I will beat him up for you to vent your anger. In return, how about you help me beat someone up?”
“What?” Jin Fei asked in surprise. “Who do you want to hit?”
Yu Yan replied, “Sun Hao, from Class 24.”
As the figures of Song Ze and the girl disappeared, Jin Fei looked back and asked, “Why do you not do it yourself?”
Yu Yan’s voice was flat. “I already hit Gao Da. If I use the same method again, I will be the first person they suspect. I do not want to get a disciplinary mark on my record.”
Jin Fei had fallen half a step behind Yu Yan because of his distraction. Hearing this, he peeked at Yu Yan’s profile as if looking at a rare animal. He said dramatically, “Are you actually pretending to be a good student? How can there be a good student with bad grades who fights as fiercely as you do?”
Yu Yan sighed. “I just want to get into the same university as Xu Yansheng. I cannot do that with a disciplinary record.”
Jin Fei wanted to shake Yu Yan by the shoulders and scream. Wake up! Your exam scores are nearly as low as mine, yet you want to get into the same university as a student who is consistently in the top three of the grade? Is that realistic?
But perhaps because Yu Yan’s voice was so firm, Jin Fei felt a tightness in his chest. His voice sounded muffled as he replied, “Then I truly wish for your dream to come true.”
“Thank you.” Yu Yan stopped and turned to look Jin Fei in the eye. “So, do we have a deal?”
Looking into the eyes of the gloomy boy, Jin Fei, who always considered himself a lover of beauty, could not help but feel his heart flutter. The late March wind brushed past his ears. April and the full bloom of spring were coming.
To the rhythm of his racing heart, he heard his own voice sound dry and tight. “Fine. But I want to change the condition. I want you to pretend to be my partner and attend a party with me.”
Yu Yan rejected him immediately. “No. I am a man of high moral standards.”
It was the expected answer, but Jin Fei still felt inevitable disappointment. He grumbled with resentment, “Please. Only people with partners have standards to keep. Do you have one?”
Yu Yan answered with a lack of confidence, “I will soon.”
They reached the bike shed while talking. Jin Fei blocked Yu Yan as he tried to push his bike. He held the handlebars firmly and pleaded with watery eyes, “Just have some pity on me again. That jerk will be at the party. I just want to use you to make him jealous. I promise nothing inappropriate will happen.”
Yu Yan looked suspicious. “You promise?”
Jin Fei raised his hand to swear. “I promise.” He thought to himself, Not really.
Yu Yan believed him. “Okay. When and where?”
Jin Fei smiled through his tears. “April 5th at 8:00 PM, at Starry Night Bar.”
While Yu Yan was being pestered by Jin Fei, Xu Yansheng was also blocked in a dark corner of the teaching building. Looking at the girl’s expressionless face, he pushed down his slight annoyance and asked, “Is something the matter?”
Wang Shan nodded and asked directly, “Have you fallen for Xie Jin?”
Xu Yansheng did not deny it. Instead, he asked back, “What does it have to do with you?”
Wang Shan remained composed, showing no signs of heartbreak at being disliked by her crush. “Although this is the first time we have spoken, you must have heard that I like you.”
Xu Yansheng looked away. “So what?”
Wang Shan lowered her gaze, her clear voice devoid of emotion. “So, I am going to start saying bad things about Xie Jin.”
Xu Yansheng was confused. “What?”
Wang Shan began to speak, her words as precise as if she were writing a thesis.
“First, Xie Jin is two-faced. On the surface, he brings you breakfast. In reality, he knew a long time ago that you were giving it to Zhang Yue, and he secretly added extra ingredients to it. He is malicious.”
“Second, Xie Jin is vain. He was suspended for hitting Gao Da because I framed him and forced him to confess. I did not expect him to use that incident to win your favor. He is opportunistic.”
“Finally, he hid all of this from you. Does he really like you? Have you ever truly understood him? Are the two of you really a match? Relationships between men are not accepted by society anyway. Do you really have the courage to face that with a person like him?”
Wang Shan turned and left after she finished speaking, her ponytail swinging in a clean arc. Xu Yansheng was dazed by her barrage of questions. Even after returning to his villa and seeing his parents, his mood did not improve.
Xu’s mother was an elegant and composed woman, but seeing her son so distracted, she forgot her poise and glanced reproachfully at the man reading the financial evening paper nearby.
Hearing his wife’s complaint, the man quickly put down the paper, revealing a face that was seventy percent similar to Xu Yansheng’s. He teased and flattered her, saying, “Oh, please do not be angry, my dear. I have already handled the person Yansheng asked me to warn. Their transfer order will definitely arrive within a week.”
In fact, the order arrived in three days, along with the results of the mock exam.
The results were released during the long break. As soon as the eye exercises ended, students flocked to the bulletin board to check their scores. Xu Yansheng did not move because his grades were stable as the top in his class and the top three in the grade. But seeing that Yu Yan also did not move, he felt like checking the scores for him.
Before he could move, a shocked cry came from the bulletin board. “Xie Jin! The top student is Xie Jin!”
Xu Yansheng looked in disbelief at the boy beside him, who was writing as usual. The arrival of the homeroom teacher confirmed the truth. The teacher’s voice echoed from the back door. “Xie Jin, someone reported you for cheating. Come with me.”
Yu Yan gave Xu Yansheng a reassuring smile and walked out with a steady pace.
Inside the office, the teachers for Class 23 were all gathered. They were animatedly discussing Yu Yan’s scores. They did not stop when the student arrived but instead pulled him into the discussion.
The Physics teacher said, “You cannot use this formula for this mechanics problem. It is beyond the scope of the exam syllabus, so you would not get full marks.”
The English teacher added, “The grammar in your essay is too complex. Use fewer nested structures, or the graders will get exhausted.”
One voice was distinctly different. It was the Chinese teacher. “Why did you get a perfect score in the other three subjects, but only 126 in Chinese? Do you have something against me or the subject?”
Before Yu Yan could speak, the English teacher defended him. “Oh, Chinese is a mysterious subject. Getting over 120 is already very impressive.”
The situation was completely different from what Yu Yan had imagined. Should they not be making him retake the test under full surveillance?
The homeroom teacher saw his confusion and patted his shoulder comfortingly. He said earnestly, “My boy, your answers are worlds apart from the standard key. If we were not grading this in-school, you would probably only rank in the top hundred. That is why no one suspects you of cheating. We called you here because the teachers want to create a specialized training plan for you. You might even become the top scorer in the city.”
Yu Yan lowered his head modestly. Once the excitement died down, he looked up and asked, “May I ask who reported me?”
The teacher looked conflicted. “Many people.” It seemed the boy had offended quite a few others.
Yu Yan asked again, “Was Wang Shan from Class 24 among them?”
To Yu Yan’s surprise, she was not.
He returned to the classroom full of questions. When he heard the news that the principal was about to be replaced, his first reaction was to look at the boy slumped on the desk beside him. He unexpectedly met a pair of eyes that were dark and clouded with gloom.
