- Chapter 6 - The Immortal Sect's Darling (4) — One Soul Exchanged for the Rupture of Your Master-Disciple Bond...
Before the gate of Feixian Peak, Ye Qianjue was teary-eyed, murmuring in a trance: “My dog is lost…”
In the distance, the gate-guarding disciple clutched his broom, his face filled with guilt. Looking at the Little Junior Brother’s utterly dejected state, he felt a massive moral blow.
He pressed his palms together in prayer: “It wasn’t my fault; it was the idea of the old Immortal Venerable, Master Gu.”
Inside the bamboo cottage, Gu Qingyun sipped clear tea and fanned himself, the faint, tranquil aroma of the tea drifting through the room.
Gu Qingyun looked at the sky outside, which was gradually darkening. “Calculating the time, he should be back soon.”
Just as he was thinking of Ye Qianjue, a plaintive, aggrieved voice came from outside: “Master~ sob sob sob~ my puppy is lost…”
Ye Qianjue’s face was tear-stained, his little face wrinkled like a crumpled ball, his eyes red like a rabbit in distress. He rushed toward Gu Qingyun and collided directly into his arms.
Only upon sniffing the elegant, faint scent of his Master did Ye Qianjue’s mood ease slightly.
He rubbed his eyes and climbed onto Gu Qingyun’s lap, wrapping his arms tightly around his neck, sobbing: “Sob sob sob… what do I do? I lost the puppy!”
The cute little one’s tears were like strings of tiny pearls, sliding down continuously, soaking Gu Qingyun’s lapel.
“How could it just get lost? I clearly instructed that disciple to watch over it properly. To fail at even such a small task, I shall go and hold him accountable right now.”
After Gu Qingyun finished speaking with righteous indignation, he prepared to stand up and hold the gate-guarding disciple accountable.
The kind-hearted Ye Qianjue immediately hugged Gu Qingyun tightly.
He shook his head, choking on his sobs: “No… Master, don’t blame Senior Brother… it’s Qianjue’s fault… sob sob sob…”
Gu Qingyun had the soft-hearted little dumpling exactly where he wanted him; he knew his disciple better than anyone.
Gu Qingyun struck while the iron was hot: “My good disciple, don’t be too sad. Feixian Peak is a place of profound spirit, so the wolf cub will likely be fine. If it’s meant to be, it will be; don’t force what isn’t meant for you.”
When he reached this point, Ye Qianjue was already pouting in sadness, looking like he was about to burst into wailing tears.
Watching his disciple suffer and grieve over a wolf cub of unknown origin, Gu Qingyun felt unsettled.
He pressed Ye Qianjue into his arms, patting the child’s shoulder lightly just as he would to lull him to sleep in childhood.
The usually reticent and cold Immortal Venerable Gu naturally wouldn’t know how to sing lullabies; he simply patted Ye Qianjue’s back repeatedly in the simplest, most straightforward way until the sobbing subsided.
He truly was his beloved disciple.
Gu Qingyun lowered his eyes to look; the soundly sleeping Ye Qianjue’s face was a mess of tear tracks.
A slight smile touched the corners of his mouth. He cradled the sleeping Ye Qianjue and remained sitting in the chair until dawn.
The next morning, the awakened Ye Qianjue didn’t cry or fuss, seemingly having accepted the reality that the wolf cub was gone.
“Master, Qianjue is going to the schoolhouse.”
The well-behaved Ye Qianjue stood outside the bamboo cottage, waving his small hand at Gu Qingyun, who was inside.
Watching his disciple leave with the other disciples, Gu Qingyun felt deeply gratified.
“My good disciple is growing up.”
This joy didn’t last long.
As Gu Qingyun was meditating in the bamboo cottage as usual, Ye Qianjue’s excited shouts came from outside.
The bamboo door was pushed open forcefully by Ye Qianjue, who ran toward Gu Qingyun: “Master! Look at what’s in my arms~”
Gu Qingyun stopped his breathing exercise upon hearing this and slowly opened his eyes, only to see Ye Qianjue with his hands behind his back, as if hiding something.
Such a mysterious scene made Gu Qingyun curious. He cooperated by stepping off the bed, walking over to Ye Qianjue, and crouching down.
With a pleasant expression, he said: “I cannot guess it; my good disciple, hurry and reveal the mystery.”
Ye Qianjue tried his best to hold back his laughter, then provided his own sound effects: “Ta-da!”
Seeing Ye Qianjue smiling as he brought out a black object from behind his back and held it horizontally before Gu Qingyun’s eyes, before Gu Qingyun could recover, Ye Yuan opened his mouth and let out a provocative “Woof!”
In that instant, Gu Qingyun’s gaze sharpened, his expression shattering like the collapse of heaven and earth.
He looked at the wolf cub inches away; those bright, piercing eyes were staring back at him, seemingly in provocation.
Gu Qingyun’s fists clenched tightly beneath his robes, knuckles cracking.
“A surprise! Is Master happy”
The oblivious Ye Qianjue shared his joy of regaining what was lost with Gu Qingyun, but alas, the joys and sorrows of humans are not connected.
Gu Qingyun swallowed his broken teeth back into his stomach: “I am… happy.”
Ye Yuan watched Gu Qingyun’s deflated expression and felt delighted from the bottom of his heart!
It was worth all the effort, crawling back up from the foot of the mountain!
“Master, Qianjue is going to play with the puppy now, I won’t keep you company~” Ye Qianjue, as if he had found a treasure, left the bamboo cottage joyfully with Ye Yuan, leaving behind a troubled Gu Qingyun.
Looking at that tenacious wolf cub, Gu Qingyun became even more certain of his initial suspicion.
“This wolf cub is indeed strange. Feixian Peak is not a place where ordinary livestock can enter.” Gu Qingyun rubbed his temples and sighed: “But Jue’er loves this creature so much…”
Thinking about how something of unknown origin was eating and sleeping with Ye Qianjue every day made Gu Qingyun restless.
By now, Ye Yuan was living a life fit for an Emperor.
“Eat a chicken leg~”
Ye Qianjue shoved a large chicken leg toward Ye Yuan’s mouth.
“Awoo”
(I’ll give you credit for your loyalty, this Venerable will remember you… this tastes really good.)
Ye Qianjue hugged Ye Yuan and ran all the way into the bamboo forest, where the verdant, straight, and hard bamboos emitted a faint, fresh fragrance.
“I’m really not convinced. Master is too biased. We are all disciples of Feixian Peak, why does Ye Qianjue get all the favor? He’s only a five-year-old child, yet he has become Master’s direct disciple where does that leave us Senior Brothers!”
The other disciples complained mournfully: “Master is so biased. Out of thousands of disciples, all of whom entered the sect earlier than the Little Junior Brother, why did he pick only him!”
A few of them gathered in the bamboo forest, waving their long swords to vent their anger.
Ye Qianjue stopped in his tracks: “Did I hear my name?”
He hugged Ye Yuan, cautiously concealing himself in the bushes, and secretly listened to his Senior Brothers’ conversation.
“Is that the same thing? Being raised by hand, naturally he’s the closest.”
“Looking at Master’s attitude, Little Junior Brother’s position as a direct disciple is set in stone! If I lost to Senior Brother Yan Yi, I would accept it… but to lose to that little fool Ye Qianjue, I don’t accept it.”
Direct disciple? The closest? What did all this mean?
Ye Qianjue was left in a daze, scratching his head in confusion.
Direct disciple? Interesting,
Ye Yuan looked up at Ye Qianjue.
Seeing Ye Qianjue’s blank, foolish expression, if it weren’t for his cute and pleasing face, Ye Yuan would have really suspected that Gu Qingyun had been kicked in the head by a donkey to make this milk-brat a direct disciple.
Before Ye Qianjue could digest what he had just heard, the group of disciples continued their complaints.
“I don’t accept it anyway. Which one of us isn’t from a noble family, with famous and prestigious clans back home! Ye Qianjue is just a wild child, what right does he have to be a direct disciple!”
Another disciple added indignantly.
“That’s right! Master is completely blinded!”
The more they talked, the uglier their words became. Ye Yuan began to frown, looking at Ye Qianjue with displeasure.
Seeing the purely innocent Ye Qianjue, Ye Yuan was happy; fortunately, he didn’t understand these filthy, vulgar words.
However, Ye Qianjue’s brows were furrowed, his expression dejected. Although he didn’t understand what the Senior Brothers were saying, he could vaguely sense a trace of malice.
As Ye Qianjue listened, his eyes turned red.
Ye Yuan watched the little milk-brat pouting, struggling to hold back his tears, and felt a stinging pain in his heart.
“I don’t like it here, I want to go back.” Ye Qianjue frowned and turned to leave.
Ye Yuan looked at the green-clad disciples, his heart filled with murderous intent.
Looking at Ye Qianjue’s dejected back, a plan emerged. Since Ye Qianjue treated him well, he would begrudgingly help Ye Qianjue deal with those mongrels.
Back at the bamboo cottage, Ye Qianjue put Ye Yuan down and ran straight inside.
Once his feet hit the ground, Ye Yuan went to the bamboo forest to settle scores.
Inside the room, Gu Qingyun saw at a glance that Ye Qianjue was low-spirited. He rubbed Ye Qianjue’s hair: “What’s wrong, Qianjue? The wolf cub has been found, what else is there to be unhappy about?”
Ye Qianjue leaned against Gu Qingyun’s arm and muttered: “Master, what is a direct disciple, and what does ‘the closest’ mean? Is this thing very important?”
The innocent Ye Qianjue raised his little head, looking at Gu Qingyun obediently.
A cold light flashed in Gu Qingyun’s eyes. Looking at his disciple’s appearance, it was most likely that some restless disciple had been gossiping and had been overheard by his disciple.
Gu Qingyun picked up his smile again: “Where did you hear these words? Regardless of whether it’s a direct disciple or ‘the closest,’ in my eyes, Jue’er is my everything.”
Ye Qianjue widened his eyes, looking at Gu Qingyun, deeply moved.
“Master is the best~”
Just as the master and disciple were sharing their feelings, a heart-rending scream echoed from outside.
“What is that sound?” Ye Qianjue covered his ears in fear.
Gu Qingyun patted his shoulder, comforting him: “Be a good disciple and stay in the cottage; I need to go check the situation.”
With that, Gu Qingyun flicked his sleeves and left.
Ye Qianjue watched his disappearing Master, panic striking him instantly. He ran outside: “The sound just now seemed to come from the bamboo forest, it sounds so terrifying… Master will be in danger, I must protect Master!”
“Who dares to act presumptuously on Feixian Peak!”
A breeze mixed with pear blossom petals swept past, and Gu Qingyun appeared in the sky above the incident.
He looked down and saw several corpses lying in the bamboo forest, all of them drained of flesh and blood, turned into shriveled husks.
Ye Yuan had absorbed enough essence to take on his human form.
“I originally only wanted to teach these few a lesson, but I couldn’t help myself~” He looked up at Gu Qingyun: “Long time no see~ Gu Qingyun~”
The demonic seal on Ye Yuan’s forehead became more intense, and those crimson eyes were glaring viciously at Gu Qingyun.
“I was not mistaken; that beast was indeed you. To think that a wisp of your soul managed to escape.” Gu Qingyun looked at the dead disciples with a stern expression.
“Refusing to repent this Venerable shall shatter your soul to dust today!”
As soon as he spoke, Gu Qingyun formed a seal, and countless ice blades fell like a torrential rain of pear blossoms, leaving Ye Yuan covered in wounds.
Ye Yuan clutched his injured arm and said sinisterly: “If it weren’t for being locked under the Demon-Suppressing Tower by you, I wouldn’t have been injured by you!”
Ye Yuan was now caught between a rock and a hard place. He had approached Ye Qianjue only to find his inner core, but after seeing Ye Qianjue being bullied, he had impulsively killed those people.
This remnant soul was no match for Gu Qingyun at all.
Ye Yuan looked up at Gu Qingyun, feeling indifferent. It seemed he was going to be beaten back into the Demon-Suppressing Tower.
Countless pear blossom needles pierced toward Ye Yuan. He simply closed his eyes. At the critical moment, a cry came from afar.
“Master!”
Is it Ye Qianjue?
Ye Yuan opened his eyes wide and smiled at Gu Qingyun: “Exchanging one soul for your master-disciple rupture seems quite nice.”
As these words were uttered, Gu Qingyun’s body froze. At the moment the pear blossom needles pierced toward Ye Yuan, the fellow actually transformed into a wolf cub!
“Puppy!”
Ye Qianjue let out a scream. He saw with his own eyes his puppy killed by his Master!
The cold, bone-chilling ice needles pierced through the wolf cub’s body. On the edge of the mountain peak, Ye Qianjue watched helplessly as the puppy fell into the abyss.
“Master! Why did you kill my puppy!”
