- Chapter 8 - Do I Have to Accept Your Apology?
Mi Yue turned and ran away without saying a word.
Xiu Ka frowned as he watched the petite figure gradually disappear into the distance, his chest heavy with frustration.
Wu Er also looked worried. “Did I say something wrong? Does he think this lamb leg is too small? Maybe you should take the whole half-sheep to him.”
“Perhaps what he dislikes, is us.” Their impoverished home couldn’t even provide a decent lamb leg.
“It’s not his fault. It’s me who’s useless and dragging you down.”
Wu Er sighed and silently walked back with the lamb leg.
Xiu Ka remained silent as well, squatting on the ground to start a fire by rubbing sticks, the most primitive method. Without fire, the night would grow cold.
Tap, tap, tap… footsteps sounded behind him, but he was too focused on making fire to pay attention.
Suddenly, someone tapped his shoulder. He turned and saw a face smiling at him, eyes brimming with amusement.
His heart leaped with joy, but remembering Mi Yue’s earlier behavior, he suppressed the slight upward curve of his lips.
He continued to stubbornly focus on starting the fire.
Seeing that he was ignoring her, Mi Yue’s spoiled temper flared up. She directly handed the lamb leg and bread to Wu Er.
Gesturing with her fingers, she pointed at the lamb leg, then at herself, and shook her head.
(I don’t know how to roast lamb, giving it to me would be a waste. Keep it for yourselves. The bread is for you, Xiu Ka isn’t allowed to have any!)
She stuffed the bread into Wu Er’s mouth and snorted at Xiu Ka, who was still on the ground.
Without waiting to see if Wu Er understood, she turned to leave.
But before she could take a step, Xiu Ka grabbed her arm and yanked her back with surprising strength.
The sudden movement sent Mi Yue tumbling straight into his arms.
“I’m sorry. I misunderstood you.”
Xiu Ka’s emerald eyes were filled with remorse, and his voice was softer than ever before.
Mi Yue snorted and squirmed, trying to break free from his grip.
(Do I have to accept your apology just because you say sorry? Hmph, I refuse~)
Xiu Ka only felt more guilty.
“Xiu Ka, what’s going on?” Wu Er was confused, watching the intimate interaction between Shaman Yue and his grandson.
Xiu Ka also realized their position was inappropriate. After making sure Shaman Yue was steady on his feet, he hastily let go.
“Grandfather, we were wrong. Shaman Yue didn’t refuse the lamb leg because he dislikes us, he just doesn’t know how to cook it.”
“I misunderstood and thought you looked down on us. It was my mistake. Please forgive me.”
Mi Yue turned her head away, ignoring him.
Wu Er tried to ease the tension. “Shaman Yue, Xiu Ka is just too dense to understand your meaning. Don’t take it to heart.”
“If you can’t cook the lamb, stay and eat with us. Let Xiu Ka roast it for you as an apology.”
Mi Yue didn’t speak, but she didn’t insist on leaving either.
Seizing the opportunity, Xiu Ka hurried back to start the fire. But for some reason, no matter how hard he tried, the fire wouldn’t catch. His palms grew sweaty from rubbing the sticks, yet it was all in vain.
Just as he was considering whether to borrow fire from someone else, a delicate fragrance drifted to his nose.
It was refreshing, like mountain jasmine, he didn’t need to look to know who it was.
Scratch, scratch, scratch~
Two slender fingers rubbed something together, producing tiny sparks.
“This is…”
But after struggling for a while, Mi Yue still couldn’t ignite the fire. Her cheeks flushed red with frustration as she angrily threw the flint to the ground.
(It won’t light at all, terrible quality!!!)
Watching her storm off in a huff, Xiu Ka couldn’t help but smirk slightly.
Who would have thought that the mighty shaman who commanded heavenly thunder would have such a temperament in private?
Xiu Ka observed for a while and roughly understood that the black substance was used for starting fires. After some thought, he managed to strike sparks as well.
Then, tiny embers fell onto the tuft of tinder, sending up wisps of smoke before a small flame flickered to life.
Xiu Ka then used thin twigs to coax the fire, and soon the firewood was fully ablaze.
He turned to look at Mi Yue, who was sitting on a rock with her lips pouted. When she noticed his gaze, she turned her head away, still sulking.
Xiu Ka shook his head helplessly and began roasting the lamb legs. Before long, both legs were perfectly cooked.
Considerately, he used a bone knife to carve the tenderest meat from the legs and placed it in a stone bowl, handing it to Mi Yue.
“This meat is the most tender part of the lamb legs. Shaman Yue, you should try it.”
Mi Yue looked at the meat in the bowl, then bent down to rummage through the leather pouch she had brought with her.
By the firelight, Xiu Ka saw her pull out a white object and something long and slender.
Mi Yue took out a cleansing wet wipe to clean her hands, then opened a chopstick case and retrieved a pair of stainless-steel chopsticks.
Watching her series of actions, both Xiu Ka and Wu Er thought she was performing some pre-meal ritual and silently observed in silence.
Mi Yue picked up a piece of roasted meat with her chopsticks and placed it in her mouth. The crispy, golden skin mixed with the firm meat created a wonderful sensation as it burst with flavor.
It tasted different from modern roasted lamb, more natural, with a hint of fruity fragrance.
Seeing Mi Yue’s satisfied expression, Xiu Ka secretly sighed in relief.
As long as she likes it.
Mi Yue ate the roasted meat with some bread and was soon full.
She waved her hand to decline Xiu Ka’s offer to add more meat, rubbing her stomach.
(I’m full. Any more and I’ll be too stuffed to sleep comfortably tonight.)
She pointed to her tent, signaling her intention to return.
Xiu Ka set down the roasted meat in his hand, his voice hoarse. “It’s too dark. Let me walk you back.”
Mi Yue shook her head and turned on her flashlight, illuminating the path ahead as bright as daylight.
The Tiger Tribe folks’ men curiously glanced over, but when they saw the light emanating from Mi Yue’s hand, they shrank back in fear.
Mi Yue waved her hand and flashed a smile.
(I’m heading off.)
Xiu Ka stood quietly in place, thinking to himself, How did Shaman Yue even grow up if he doesn’t know the most basic skill of roasting meat, something even males can do?
Mi Yue returned to her tent and turned on a small night light. The tent’s fabric was light-blocking, so no glow could be seen from outside.
She lay down for a while, growing anxious. Why hasn’t Xiu Ka’s gratitude value increased yet?
Logically, after giving him a tent and saving him again today, the gratitude value shouldn’t be low. Yet, she still hadn’t received any notification.
Meanwhile, Xiu Ka and his grandfather Wu Er had also finished their roasted meat, lying in the tent full of wonder.
“This tent is amazing. Sleeping inside means no more bug bites. I wonder what kind of beast hide it’s made from to block the wind so well.”
“Xiu Ka, today we owe it to Shaman Yue for standing up for you in front of the tribe. Otherwise, such a fine tent would’ve been taken by others. Remember his kindness, and make sure to protect him whenever needed in the future.”
When Xiu Ka was born, his innate abilities were deemed weak, and it was predicted he would never progress beyond Green-tier strength. As a result, his parents abandoned him in disgust.
If Wu Er hadn’t braved the snowstorm to retrieve him from outside the city, he would have frozen to death long ago.
Seeing Mi Yue always reminded Wu Er of Xiu Ka’s childhood, filling him with extra compassion.
Lying on his back in the sleeping bag, Xiu Ka replied softly, “I will.”
[Received 15 gratitude points from tiger tribe male Xiu Ka. Current gratitude points: 15]
[Received 5 virtue points from tiger tribe male Xiu Ka. Current virtue points: 25]
Mi Yue, who had been drowsy, instantly perked up, she had finally gotten the gratitude points!
This trip was definitely worth it!!!
