Chapter 23: The First World (23)
The weather was scorching. Wu Shiyi wasn’t wearing the black trench coat Wu Yao was familiar with.
He wore a cool ice-silk short-sleeved shirt on top and deep blue beach shorts on the bottom, paired with beach shoes; many tourists in District B were dressed exactly like this.
The man’s skin was a bit darker than before from being out in the sun too long, making his features appear deeper and more three-dimensional, making people look at his face subconsciously.
It took Wu Yao a second to notice two other people behind him—a man and a woman who looked like bodyguards based on their clothes.
As various thoughts flashed through his mind, Wu Yao tilted his head blankly.
The man smiled awkwardly, “I forgot you don’t remember me. My name is Wu Shiyi. Open the door first; I have something I need to tell you privately.”
“Sorry, I’m not interested.”
Just as Wu Yao was about to close the door, Wu Shiyi suddenly pulled the security door open.
He was very strong; Wu Yao was pulled forward, staggering a couple of steps. Seeing this, the man immediately reached out, wanting to pull him into his embrace.
Wu Yao steadied himself and nimbly dodged.
Wu Shiyi lowered his eyelids like a discarded large dog, looking both aggrieved and pitiable.
He dismissed the bodyguards, “What I’m about to say is incredible, but I swear it’s all true. This is a matter of life and death, and as you are my best friend, you’re the only one I can trust.”
The system was completely stunned, “The silly dog found you so quickly? He’s really stepping up, he’s such a good dog!”
“Wait, wait, at the start of this cycle Wu Shiyi is a person, not a dog—human inside and out. From now on, the ‘it’ has to be changed to ‘he.’ He’s really stepping up, he’s such a good man!”
“Xiao Yao, why are you ignoring me again!”
Wu Yao pulled back his searching gaze, his expression softening slightly. “I don’t mind chatting with you, but you have to answer one question first, or I won’t trust you.”
“There was a heavy rainstorm at night. I didn’t bring a bag or an umbrella, and I was only wearing a thin short-sleeved shirt and tight jeans. The clothes weren’t baggy enough and there was no hat, so it was impossible to use them to block the rain. Fortunately, a van stopped beside me at that moment, and a man rolled down the window and invited me inside, saying he’d give me a ride. Should I get in?”
Wu Shiyi clearly didn’t expect him to ask this.
The system was also dazed, “What kind of question is this? A safety tip? Quick answer! Treasure your kidneys and stay away from black-market cars.”
Wu Yao held up three fingers, “Don’t rush to answer. This question is very important. You have three chances to ask questions to get more details. I will only answer yes or no, have or haven’t.”
“You have five minutes. Once the time is up, I will view any of your actions as malicious intent.”
Wu Shiyi’s brow furrowed.
Why would Wu Yao ask this kind of question? What was the meaning?
Right, the letter.
Before the last cycle ended, that apology letter—Wu Yao asked this because he definitely remembered the contents of that letter.
He was very smart; he could deduce the Mayor’s answer based on that letter.
Any strange thing could happen on Paradise Island. He was worried someone was playing tricks and wanted to use this question to judge if he was truly Wu Shiyi.
The man gradually formed a line of thought, “Was there anyone else in the car besides the driver?”
“No.”
“If you didn’t get in that car, would you have had to go home in the rain tonight?”
“Yes.”
Wu Yao answered coldly, but the guard in his eyes was disappearing bit by bit.
The man curled the corners of his mouth.
He guessed right. The focus of this question wasn’t on the answer he gave, but on the three questions.
The Mayor had once modified the apology letter Wu Shiyi gave to Wu Yao; the content of the letter had a flavor of victim-blaming. The question he posed couldn’t show even a hint of a tendency to condemn the victim.
Wu Shiyi lifted his head confidently, “There’s no need to ask the third question. My answer is: you cannot get in the car.”
Wu Yao stared at him fixedly, and his tensed body suddenly relaxed.
He stepped aside to open the door and beckoned to Wu Shiyi, “Come in, silly dog.”
As two cans of cola hit the bottom, Wu Shiyi explained the general purpose of his visit.
Paradise Island was in some kind of cycle, and this time, for some reason, he had retained his memories of the last cycle. To avoid the Mayor’s persecution of them, he decided to become the Mayor.
“I am one of the twelve Mayor candidates. In the last cycle, the Mayor was wary of me, which is why he turned me into a dog and made me lose my eligibility for the election.”
Wu Shiyi pulled open his collar, “Every candidate has a number stamped on their neck. I am number 12.”
Wu Yao leaned in to look closely, “The numbers don’t look tattooed.”
“They are embedded in the skin. You can touch them. This is a method to prevent malicious competition and protect the candidates. Once a candidate dies, the police receive a location, and the device automatically turns on audio and video recording.”
The man allowed Wu Yao to rub his neck; he had a shy smile on his face, and his breathing gradually became heavy.
Wu Yao didn’t feel anything special. Just as he was about to stand up, Wu Shiyi suddenly grabbed his hand.
He looked up at Wu Yao, extending his tongue as if wanting to lick his finger.
Before he could touch it, Wu Yao withdrew his hand. “I said before, you’re not allowed to lick me!”
The man froze, “Sorry, I don’t know why I…”
He didn’t finish, lowering his head in guilt.
There were several restaurants in District B that charged separate fees. Wu Shiyi treated Wu Yao to a meal of teppanyaki.
The two talked as they ate. The man’s tone became increasingly excited, his eyes shining as he told him: “I came over from District A. I know what’s over there now!”
Wu Yao looked around alertly, “Tell me the details, keep your voice down.”
“Higher technology and wealthier people; it’s a completely different world from Districts B and C. There are flying machines, robots, and AI everywhere. The people there look down on the residents of the other districts.”
“And the security situation?”
“Excellent. Most of the police force is concentrated in District A. District C is the lowest slum area of Paradise Island, but they are blinded by the news on the internet and don’t know it.”
Wu Yao took a moment to digest this, “Cyberpunk?”
“I’m not sure, I don’t understand those things. Xiao Yao, I suspect the infinite loop was created by the people in District A. They are using District C for some kind of experiment. Once I become Mayor, I’ll be able to find out more information.”
Wu Yao nodded, thoughtful, “Okay, I’ll help you. You will definitely become the Mayor.”
The topic soon jumped elsewhere. The system, which was taking notes, just drifted off for a moment, and when it came back, it couldn’t understand the conversation between the two anymore.
It only knew they were becoming more and more intimate, with one saying “silly dog” and the other “Xiao Yao,” as close as sworn brothers.
At five o’clock in the evening, Wu Shiyi, as a Mayor candidate, began his speech on Long Beach. Wu Yao sat in the audience clapping for him.
When the speech ended, Wu Shiyi took the opportunity to invite him to a candlelit dinner. After a few glasses of red wine, the atmosphere between the two gradually became ambiguous.
Wu Yao was in a good mood; he propped his cheek up and looked at Wu Shiyi, “You’re the only person on this island I can trust. I’m really happy you could come find me.”
The man poured him a glass of red wine, “I’m also very happy to see you again.”
The system advised him not to drink, “The island isn’t safe. Drinking while working can lead to trouble.”
The host ignored it and raised his glass again, “To our friendship. Cheers.”
“Drink, drink, drink! Drink yourself to death!”
After dinner, Wu Yao proactively invited him to spend the night in his room.
Looking at Wu Yao’s flushed cheeks and misty eyes, the system no longer had the heart to be angry with him, “Maybe you should just let him leave. It’s not very safe for two men to sleep in one room.”
“You actually want to shower! Did you forget he licked you before? He’s right outside the door, how do you dare to wash? What if he comes in!”
Wu Yao rubbed his face, his gaze instantly clear, “He’ll definitely come in. After all, the person outside the door isn’t Wu Shiyi, it’s the Mayor. Brother, your brain didn’t catch on, but your intuition is quite sharp.”
The system stared at him blankly, “Huh? The Mayor? The Mayor?!”
Leaving aside that the man in front of him was hopping around, which didn’t match the health data, even without the background data, Wu Yao could tell he wasn’t Wu Shiyi.
They were completely different kinds of people—one was arrogant and conceited, the other was reserved and polite.
If Wu Shiyi had retained his memory, he would only have had three reactions upon seeing Wu Yao.
Being overly excited, pouncing on him, hugging him, and repeatedly saying, “Thank goodness you’re fine.”
Wanting to pounce but stopping himself, cautiously asking if he still remembered him. Or saying nothing at all and just smiling at him—smiling until that “old deer” in his heart started crashing around again.
For the most important ‘long-awaited reunion’ scene, the Mayor’s imitation wasn’t good enough.
The subsequent forced opening of the door wasn’t something Wu Shiyi would do, either. He would have looked on helplessly as the door closed, scratching at the door while explaining himself.
Wu Yao knew this was his stereotype of Wu Shiyi; in his eyes, he was just a silly dog, and it was the same even if he turned into a person.
The question just now was both the final test and a reassurance for the other party.
With Wu Shiyi’s logic, he basically wouldn’t use the three question opportunities, but if he did, he would definitely use all three.
And then he would thank him for his life-saving grace, apologize for his rude behavior, and share all the new clues he had learned.
Wu Shiyi had been a dog for so long; he had many things bottled up that he wanted to say to Wu Yao. The Mayor, who had never been a dog, couldn’t understand his feelings.
The two seemingly exchanged feelings this afternoon, but in reality, they were setting traps for each other.
To win his trust, the Mayor revealed a lot of information to him. One part was what Wu Yao had already guessed, one part was meaningless, and another part was a false induction.
In exchange, Wu Yao also shared his earlier excluded guesses and discarded plans—half-true and half-false—with the Mayor.
Wu Yao glanced at the background data; Wu Shiyi’s health value was rising rapidly.
Since the Mayor was here to sow discord, he must have prepared a big surprise for him. Fine, he had a surprise, too.
When the bathroom door opened, Wu Yao was getting dressed.
The man looked drunk, standing outside the door with a flush creeping over his face, “Xiao Yao, thank you for saving me.”
Wu Yao rolled up his sleeves and said to the system: “I love you.”
“Huh?”
In the next second, Wu Shiyi spoke: “I love you, Xiao Yao.”
“Do you love me? I want to hug you.”
“Do you love me even a little bit? I want to kiss you, please give me a chance.”
The system caught on belatedly, “Are you guessing what he’s going to say? Hahaha, you guessed wrong, you… wait, what is he going to do?!”
“He’s not just going to kiss me. After I reject him, he’s going to pull a ‘forced love’ act on me, using the alcohol as an excuse to say things that seem like a confession but are actually insulting me.”
Wu Shiyi was a nice guy; Wu Yao had some understanding of him. Doing bad things with that face would only make Wu Yao suspicious.
Turning “perverted for love” was one of the few villainous roles he could play.
In the last cycle, Wu Yao came online too late; he was a shut-in and loved to act, so the Mayor couldn’t guess where his bottom line was.
And the only time Wu Yao got angry was when Wu Shiyi lost control and licked him twice while recording his scent.
What the Mayor prepared to perform was exactly this scene.
The system was anxious, “Was what you just said true or false?!”
“It’s true, of course. The Mayor is a lunatic who will risk everything. If I can beat him, he’ll take the opportunity to leave and insult me a few more times. If I can’t, you’ll only be seeing a bunch of mosaics tonight.”
“Ah—”
“Cheer up, this is a good thing delivered to our door.”
Wu Yao suppressed the corners of his mouth from curling up wildly and casually picked up the hairdryer. “Once he enters this door, it won’t be up to him anymore!”
“I’ve waited so long, and finally, I have a chance to beat him up rightfully. If I don’t rip off one of his arms tonight, I won’t let him leave even if he wants to!”
