Chapter 21: The First World (21)
Wu Yao had just finished his shower, so his natural scent was mostly covered by the smell of body wash.
To remember his original scent, the black dog had to sniff even more seriously and carefully.
Fortunately, the contact period brought by the apple had long since ended, so he could only see a cute big dog.
If he were seeing a broad-shouldered, narrow-waisted man crouching in front of him, burying his face in him and nuzzling around…
Wu Yao shuddered at his own mental image.
Yikes, I’m going to need workers’ comp for this.
Wu Shiyi was a meticulous dog, sniffing him from front to back.
It was still early, so Wu Yao blanked his eyes and quickly blocked out the external interference, focusing on thinking about the next step of the plan.
It wasn’t until a soft sensation came from his lower abdomen that he snapped out of his contemplation.
Wu Yao asked blankly, “What just happened?”
The big dog lowered its head silently.
The system spoke up hesitantly, “He licked you, hey. You’re in a very dangerous spot right now. If you don’t intend to be with him, you’d better kick him off the bed quickly.”
Wu Yao blinked slowly.
Dangerous?
He had only dazed off for a moment; how did the topic become so strange?
“Didn’t we discover before? Shiyi still has some lingering dog habits; it’s normal to lick a friend. What danger could there be in front of an upright ‘gentleman dog’ like him?”
For now, he still couldn’t leave him; even if he were to kill him, the time hadn’t come yet.
Wu Yao raised his hand, grabbed a handful of fur, and pulled the dog’s head up. Seeing Wu Shiyi’s face, he froze instantly.
The familiar dog face held an expression Wu Yao had never seen before. The dog eyes, usually bright and clean, were now exceptionally murky, filled with an undisguisable greed and desire.
Having worked for many years, Wu Yao often saw this kind of look. They either craved power and wealth or lusted after beauty. Someone had once looked at Wu Yao this way, calculating how to squeeze every bit of value out of him.
Wu Shiyi was different from those targets; he was a “Saint Father” dog, not a villain.
He wasn’t the type to use people; something must have gone wrong.
The black dog raised its eyes and stared at him fixedly, then suddenly extended its tongue again, slowly licking across his lower abdomen.
This time Wu Yao watched the entire process. He was stunned for a moment, belatedly realizing that the black dog’s breathing was heavy and ragged, as if it would pounce and pin him down at any second.
“Wu Shiyi! What kind of fit are you throwing! Look clearly—I’m a person, I’m your friend!”
The big dog bared its teeth and growled at him, raising a paw to try and pin him.
Wu Yao yanked the dog’s head away. “I trusted you so much, and you treat me like this! And here I was treating you as a friend; you’re being way too disrespectful!”
The black dog’s expression suddenly froze, and its eyes gradually became clear. It wasn’t fierce anymore, looking at him blankly.
It lowered its body and whimpered twice; it hadn’t been hit, yet it looked as though it had been beaten. Before Wu Yao could say anything, it ran to the kitchen and brought back a kitchen knife.
It was the first time Wu Yao had encountered something like this and he wanted to be alone for a bit. He drove Wu Shiyi away, telling him to go to the kitchen and slice the cherry tomatoes.
The system smirked, “Look how pale your little face is. Scared? Come, let Big Brother give you a hug.”
Wu Yao pulled out a wet wipe to clean his stomach.
Once he finished wiping, he calmed down.
He recalled Wu Shiyi’s reaction. “Shiyi’s profile needs an update. There is a certain probability of him being controlled by animalistic instincts. Before turning into a dog, he might have been gay or bisexual. His reaction was green, so he likely doesn’t know his own orientation either. When facing him, maintain a safe and friendly social distance to avoid a repeat of today’s situation.”
The system looked at him blankly, “Is this the first time you’ve encountered something like this?”
“It is the first time.”
“Then why are you so calm?”
“It was just a sudden accident; there’s nothing to be panicked about. I was indeed a bit startled, but not to the point of losing emotional control. Pretending to be angry and shouting at him was just to make him understand the gravity of the matter.”
Wu Yao put on his pajamas and glanced toward the kitchen.
The black dog was slicing cherry tomatoes with its tail between its legs. After slicing two pounds of cherry tomatoes, its brain would surely be clear.
The system looked left and right, “Wait, so you aren’t angry at all?”
“There’s nothing to be angry about. I don’t hate Shiyi; I didn’t find his licking disgusting.”
It was just that the place that had been licked kept feeling hot; even wiping it with a wet wipe wouldn’t lower the temperature, which made him a bit uneasy.
Wu Yao didn’t want to waste limited energy on meaningless things; overthinking this matter would only make the atmosphere between them more awkward.
The system had seen Wu Shiyi fight; he was a beast. Worried that Wu Yao would suffer a loss, it kept advising him to leave.
“The data is only temporarily up to par. It will definitely drop significantly when the next cycle begins. The contract says there’s a one-year audit period after each mission ends. If Shiyi’s data drops below the passing line within this year, we’ll have worked for nothing.”
“Besides, even if you don’t trust Shiyi’s character, you should trust my ability. He can’t beat me with brute force alone. If he really tried to do something to me…”
Wu Yao didn’t go on.
This topic was simply too stupid; he had no interest in continuing the discussion.
The “old deer” in his heart had come back to life, and Wu Yao couldn’t figure out why it was jumping around.
He recalled his shriveled wallet and used reality to kill the old deer.
By the time Wu Shiyi finished slicing the tomatoes and came out, Wu Yao was scrolling through his phone on the bed, watching a self-produced historical drama from Paradise Island.
Wu Shiyi stood by the bed, using a toothpick to skewer a tomato and offering it to his mouth.
Wu Yao looked at the “bleeding” cherry tomato and said thoughtfully, “Shiyi, we are friends?”
“Wu.”
“I like your answer. Let’s continue being friends in the future.”
There were many suspicious points about Paradise Island, such as why everyone on this island spoke the same language.
One had to know that a portion of the residents, like Wu Yao, came from outside the island. Even if the language was universal, there should be at least some local accents.
Why could no news from Districts A and B get out? What secrets were hidden inside?
Why was the technology in the inner world more advanced than in the outer world?
The historical dramas that could be released were all too fake, so Wu Yao simply searched for programs from other countries.
The content looked much more normal than Paradise Island’s, but after watching for a while, there was always a sense of dissonance.
The big black dog was sitting at the dining table with its back to him, busy with something.
A few minutes later, it ran back to the bedside with a piece of paper in its mouth.
Wu Yao took it and looked. The handwriting was very ugly, like dog scratches.
After reading it, Wu Yao couldn’t help but frown.
So low-class.
“I am sorry. My behavior made you feel uncomfortable; it was my fault to offend you and I apologize to you. But let us be fair and consider each other’s perspective—don’t you have any fault as well? If you hadn’t proactively taken off your clothes for me to smell, how would I have done such a thing?”
“As your friend, I am really worried about you. Today you just happened to meet me; I have strong self-control and won’t do anything to you. If it were someone else, even if you were raped, others would think it was consensual and that you deserved it. Don’t go around seducing people, did you remember that?”
The system howled in anger, waving a ‘power’ wanting to give Wu Shiyi a lesson.
Wu Yao pushed up his glasses and lightly tapped his temple with his fingertip.
A normal dog shouldn’t know how to write; the words had been modified. Judging by Wu Shiyi’s expression, what he wrote should have been a very sincere letter of apology.
Their perspectives were different; Wu Shiyi couldn’t see the modified letter, and Wu Yao couldn’t see the original content.
Wu Yao gave a cold sneer.
The Mayor was really impatient, trying to slander Wu Shiyi and create a misunderstanding to split them up before the next cycle even began.
Wu Yao read the letter out loud, word for word.
The black dog’s awkward smile gradually faded. It snatched the letter from Wu Yao’s hand in one bite and tore it to shreds.
“Wang-wang! Wang-wu!”
“No need to explain. I know you didn’t write it.”
Strange noises came from the room from time to time. Wu Yao looked out the window; the color of the sky was abnormal.
After the “nuclear peace” of the inner world, the outer world was also changing rapidly. He thought it could hold out for a few more days, but he didn’t expect destruction to come so quickly.
Wu Yao tapped the dog’s head. “Why won’t your little brain learn? Have more of an eye for yourself in the future. What if one day I’m not here? How will you fight the Mayor? You’re not just my friend, you’re also the dog I worked so hard to save. I don’t want you to be killed by someone.”
Wu Shiyi stared at him with a frown.
What did he mean by “what if one day I’m not here”?
Was Wu Yao also planning to abandon him? Just like the Gambler did?
No, he shouldn’t compare him to the Gambler.
He didn’t look like he was angry.
Was he trying to scare him, or was he stating a fact that was destined to happen?
The man tapped his head again. “Shiyi, fists alone aren’t enough. Haven’t you always wanted to repay the life-saving debt and believed a loyal dog should protect its master? Then you must be smarter, otherwise, if I’m killed by someone one day, you won’t even be able to find the culprit for revenge.”
“Come, smell me again. I broke out in a cold sweat; now I can be smelled even without taking off my clothes.”
The words became stranger and stranger; rather than chatting, the man seemed to be giving his last words.
A sense of unease welled up in his heart. Wu Shiyi ignored the need to keep distance and pinned Wu Yao down. “Wang? Wang!”
It had many things it wanted to say to him—it wanted to thank him for his care, apologize properly, and ask him what was really going on.
It wanted to tell him, “I am indeed not as smart as you, but I’m not stupid either, and I will never drag you down. I am strong and have a high healing capacity; I can take on fifty or sixty monsters alone. You’re shrewd and I can fight; as long as we stay together, nothing will happen.”
But it could only let out barks.
At this moment, it really wished it were a person.
Wu Yao stared behind him for a long while, a sliver of fear rising in his eyes.
Wu Shiyi turned to look. The originally smooth wall was now filled with cracks at some point.
Blood surged out with a “gurgle-gurgle,” and monsters with charred bodies crawled out from the crevices.
At first, it thought it was seeing scenes from the inner world, only to remember after two seconds that the inner world had already been nuked.
What was undergoing changes was the outer world—the world where Wu Yao and those residents lived!
Wu Yao sat cross-legged beside Wu Shiyi.
As the distance closed, Wu Shiyi once again smelled the faint, fresh sweetness on him.
Along with a roar from outside the window, screams began to ring out one after another in the silent apartment building. The outer world residents who were enjoying life a few hours ago were now running onto the street in a panic.
Someone soon called the police, and the sound of sirens could be heard in the distance.
The security door was pounded; the young couple living next door were knocking frantically.
“Stop sleeping, get up! There’s an earthquake and a fire!!!”
After shouting for Wu Yao, they went to call other neighbors.
“Wake up! Everyone wake up! Run!!!”
“Come out! I’ll help you carry the child, forget about the money and run!”
“Mon… monster! There’s a monster here!”
Wu Shiyi couldn’t calm down. Its mind was full of thoughts like “the apartment building is going to collapse, the people in the building will all die, and so will Wu Yao.”
It wanted to go out to save people, and it also wanted to take Wu Yao away.
Just as Wu Shiyi stood up, it was pressed back down by Wu Yao.
The man seemed to have forgotten the unpleasantness from just now and proactively hugged it. “An earthquake isn’t like this, silly dog. Paradise Island is too small; it’s no use no matter where I run.”
“I’m a little scared. Stay and keep me company. I want to hear you sing the puppy song for me.”
Wu Shiyi instinctively hugged him back.
Rocks kept falling around them, and the floor was collapsing rapidly. Blood-rain fell from the sky, and tragic screams echoed outside the window.
Densely packed monsters surged out from all directions, surrounding them completely. They were only waiting for the two worlds to fully merge, then they would pounce and swallow the two of them whole like a tsunami.
The person in its arms was not as calm as he appeared. Wu Shiyi heard his trembling whisper by its ear: “Shiyi, my name is Wu Yao, and I am your most important person.”
“My name is Wu Yao. Do not forget me.”
“Do not ever forget me.”
