Chapter 18: The First World (18)
The system foolishly asked Wu Yao if he wanted to leave, even pulling out a coin and saying it could cure decision paralysis.
“Using such a low-level trap is too disrespectful; who would fall for that?”
The system pointed at itself, “Me.”
“You don’t want to leave Paradise Island? Why? If we take Wu Shiyi to a safe country, the mission difficulty will definitely drop significantly.”
“If I could leave, I would have left long ago; I wouldn’t need her to send me a plane ticket.”
Wu Yao folded the handwritten seaplane ticket from Officer Qin a few times, turning it into a small paper airplane.
He held the small plane, simulating flight, and then, under the system’s gaze, slammed the plane hard onto the ground. “Getting on that seaplane is a dead end.”
“Didn’t you say the police can’t kill people?”
“Leaving Paradise Island is equivalent to voluntarily giving up my status as a resident, which gives the Mayor the opportunity to kill me.”
Wu Yao tapped the system’s dense head, then turned back to see the black dog’s clear eyes and couldn’t help but tap its dog head as well. “Have a little more sense. You already know the police and the Mayor are in cahoots, so why would you believe her nonsense?”
“Wang.”
“Don’t talk back to me, I don’t understand your barking. A dog’s IQ is equivalent to a six or seven-year-old child; I am an adult, and children should listen to adults.”
A psychopath isn’t necessarily a villain, but a villain is definitely a psychopath.
Since starting this job, this was the first time Wu Yao had encountered a mission target with such a good temper. Taking advantage of the fact that Wu Shiyi was a “Saint Father” dog, he vigorously rubbed and kneaded its dog head.
The black dog tilted its head up and grinned at him, as if it were laughing.
Wu Yao’s movements paused. He leaned down close to the big dog. “Shiyi, no matter what strange things I do in the future, you must trust me unconditionally, okay?”
The topic jumped too fast. The black dog froze for two seconds, then tucked away its smile and nuzzled Wu Yao’s cheek.
He had saved its life and given it a stable home. He was very good to it, so naturally, it would stand by his side.
The system was still brooding over Wu Yao’s words, following him and asking questions eagerly.
The weather had been hot lately, and Wu Yao had broken quite a sweat after a day of tossing and turning.
He slipped into the bathroom to shower, explaining while taking off his clothes, “The ‘big event’ mentioned by the Mayor and Officer Qin is real. Paradise Island is about to face a catastrophe, and everyone remaining on the island will die.”
“Wh—”
“No one can get out of Paradise Island. I can’t, Officer Qin can’t, and the Mayor can’t either.”
“Wh—”
“It’s related to the secret of Paradise Island. I have some guesses, but there are too few clues to be certain which line of thinking is correct. We came to the table too late and didn’t even get a chance to touch the cards. Right now is the Mayor’s turn to play; if we want to counterattack, we must wait until the next round.”
Wu Yao pushed up his glasses and stood before the mirror, examining his body. “It’s not time to fight the Mayor yet. Right now, the most urgent task is to increase Wu Shiyi’s mental value and favorability. Make sure that no matter what it encounters, its will remains firm, it stays conscious, and it never forgets me.”
“Wh—”
“I suspect Paradise Island is trapped in some kind of cycle. The cycle, from beginning to end, might be divided into four stages.”
“In the early stage of the cycle, Paradise Island is peaceful and serene; no one can discover the existence of the inner world. In the middle stage, contact between the two worlds becomes increasingly frequent, ‘contactors’ increase, and organizations like the Truth Society and the dog-fighting arena start to emerge. By the mid-to-late stage, the inner world erodes Paradise Island; even without eating apples, residents can have mild contact with the inner world. In the late stage of the cycle, the invisible boundary between the two worlds will completely disappear.”
Wu Yao tapped the center of his brow. “Bang—Paradise Island will be annihilated at the end of the cycle and reborn at the start of the cycle. We arrived too late; the cycle is already in its middle stage, and the Mayor has long since set the board. In this round of the cycle, we are at an absolute disadvantage. To counterattack, we must wait for the next round.”
His explanation was worse than no explanation at all; the system didn’t understand a damn thing.
It found a small notebook to study on its own. What Wu Yao said wasn’t hard to grasp, but it didn’t understand where Wu Yao got these conclusions from.
Wu Yao pointed to his head. “Don’t struggle so hard, little fool. My guesses aren’t entirely accurate; I’m just telling you for fun, don’t take it seriously.”
Whenever the host exposed private parts, the privacy protection system would automatically activate.
The system was feeling dizzy from its research. Seeing a lump of humanoid mosaic moving back and forth in front of the mirror, it asked curiously, “What are you doing?”
“Studying myself. You always say I’m good-looking; I want to know exactly what is good-looking about me so I can make good use of it when the opportunity arises later.”
“Oh, the straight man is going to sell his body? I can’t see anything. If you want to ask, you’d be better off asking the dog.”
When Wu Yao went out, Wu Shiyi was lying on the bed swiping through his phone, watching short videos strictly selected by the Mayor.
On the island, the world was in chaos; online, it was all singing and dancing.
Wu Yao used to sleep in bunkhouses and had showered in public baths many times.
He didn’t feel shy. Holding a diagram of human anatomy, he explained his question to Wu Shiyi, took off his bathrobe, and let the dog look closely.
The big black dog circled around him very seriously, its gaze sweeping over every inch of his skin, and finally, a dog paw drew a large circle on the diagram.
In its eyes, every part of him was good-looking.
Even too good-looking, making the dog feel uncomfortable all over.
Wu Yao sighed softly.
As expected, there was no way to get an answer from the same sex; this kind of thing should be asked of the opposite sex.
If he really “swung both ways” as the system said and looked so likable, then why were the methods they used to kill him so cruel, never showing a hint of past affection?
Tossing the garbage work to the back of his mind, Wu Yao squeezed in beside the black dog and told it his plan.
“I asked Officer Xiao Liu about it. The number of missing persons on Paradise Island has always been high, and a large portion of them are children. I found several suspicious locations on the map. Let’s sneak in to rescue people in a few days, how about it?”
Wu Shiyi’s attention should have been on the map, but its gaze kept drifting involuntarily.
The man’s long hair was pinned up, with a few stray strands falling, making his neck look even whiter. Slender fingertips drew circles on the map, and whenever he spoke of saving people, those eyes were exceptionally bright.
“Since we don’t have many days left to live anyway, we might as well stay ‘crazy.’ We’ll break into these suspicious places one by one. If we don’t find anything unusual, we’ll treat it as an adventure; if the missing people really are imprisoned inside, then we won’t have come in vain.”
Paradise Island was too eerie, and the Mayor was not easy to deal with; Wu Yao didn’t have much confidence in this mission.
Right now, the Mayor was busy with his own plans and had no time to mess with them. Wu Yao planned to use this gap to properly cultivate his relationship with the “Saint Father” dog and, while he was at it, grind through a few more side missions.
The closer his relationship with Wu Shiyi, the higher the mission success rate.
The big black dog memorized Wu Yao’s plan while staring at him fixedly.
If only it could speak. It really wanted to tell Wu Yao that it liked his shrewd appearance; right now, he was confident and kind, shining brightly in its eyes.
