Chapter 13: The First World (13)
Compared to the opponents Wu Yao had faced in the past, the thugs at the dog-fighting arena were amateurs.
He knocked out the few who rushed in first, snatched a handgun from one of them, pressed it against the manager’s temple, and swiftly regained control of the situation. The manager, dizzy from being smashed with a beer bottle, was pushed around like a marionette by Wu Yao.
He ordered the remaining thugs to lock the door, then held the manager hostage in a corner, ensuring his own back remained hidden from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
It was an excellent angle: safe, while offering a clear view of the ground floor.
The manager’s legs went limp, his entire body hanging off Wu Yao’s arm. “Don’t do anything rash! We can discuss this reasonably! What do you need? Fighting dogs or money? Just say the word, and I’ll satisfy everything!”
Downstairs, the situation was largely under Wu Shi Yi’s control. One thug had been farthest from the stairs; while the others rushed up to rescue their benefactor, he had stayed behind to watch the floor. Wu Shi Yi seized the opportunity, knocked him out with two blows, and left him sleeping soundly in the stands.
Like Wu Yao, Wu Shi Yi had also snatched a thug’s handgun. Under the threat of bullets, all were equal. After it wounded the two most aggressive spectators, the ground floor fell silent.
It barked twice toward the crowd, and responses trickled back from the stands. A dozen men and women wearing collars walked out hesitantly, taking the daggers Wu Shi Yi handed them to cut each other’s restraints.
The ordinary people who had been forcibly kidnapped were also scattered into the crowd by Wu Shi Yi. They were dressed in normal clothes and looked unremarkable; in the chaotic scene, it would be difficult for the bunny girls to remember the face of every victim.
Wu Yao watched from upstairs, fully approving of Wu Shi Yi’s actions. “Hiding a tree in a forest” was currently the best protection.
The System, seeing Wu Yao’s solemn expression, assumed he hadn’t memorized the faces of the dogs and the victims. It proudly puffed out its chest. “I took photos in advance, you know! Call me ‘Daddy,’ and I’ll share them with you!”
‘Stop trying to be my father, my memory is excellent. I only need one glance to remember every face clearly.’
“Tch, show-off. If you’re so good, why are you worrying so much?”
‘The situation is wrong. In my scenario, even if we only saved one person or dog, Shi Yi’s mental stability value should have increased. Right now, our luck is off the charts, and we’ve completely controlled the venue. As long as we wait for the police, all sixteen fighting dogs and ten victims could be rescued. Victory is in sight, yet the 5-billion-point mental stability value hasn’t moved. Something is definitely wrong.’
The System checked the backend and clutched its face in terror. “Could it be that the entry point you chose was wrong?”
‘Impossible.’
Wu Yao’s voice was frigid. ‘There is only one possibility left: in Shi Yi’s heart, this rescue hasn’t succeeded yet, and other dangers are hidden nearby.’
This was the True Knowledge Society’s turf; the only variable left was the four freaks dressed as plague doctors. Wu Yao tightened his grip on the manager’s neck and moved toward the window. Due to the angle, he couldn’t see the Society members sitting at the four corners of the ring. He pondered for a moment, then looked at Wu Shi Yi.
The man in the trench coat did something highly out of character for his persona: it dragged a woman covered in luxury goods out of the crowd, looping one arm around her slender neck while pressing a gun against her temple with the other.
Wu Yao was stunned.
In the week they had spent together, he had gained a preliminary understanding of the mission target. It was a dog with a one-track mind; it served whoever saved its life with its soul. Even when the gambler later abandoned and beat it, it never thought to resist. It had its own principles and moral compass, making it difficult for it to help Wu Yao with “evil” deeds. Despite being unable to protect itself, it still wanted to protect others.
Back when Wu Yao was teasing it at the entrance of the Hot Pot City, the only reason Wu Shi Yi had made a show of biting him was to scare him away—to prevent him from getting too close and being harmed by monsters, or being targeted by the corrupt gambler who would knock him out and sell him for money.
Why would such a “Saint Mother” dog do something like this? Wasn’t it afraid the gun would go off and kill the woman by accident?
Wu Shi Yi kept turning its head to look at its surroundings, occasionally glancing toward the second floor. Every time their eyes met, a very strange expression appeared on that handsome, rugged face. Even from such a distance, unable to hear its voice or see the fine details of its face, Wu Yao could practically hear its heavy, rapid breathing and see beads of cold sweat sliding down its wheat-colored skin.
The overly heavy atmosphere made the System nervous, too. It fiddled with its “waist” and peered around, wanting to participate but not knowing what to do. Since the world was high-difficulty, using brains in the first half and fists in the second, it would probably be fighting soon.
The System decided to go back to its old trade and craft a prop mannequin head for Wu Yao that could spray blood for 24 hours straight, guaranteed to leave whoever it sprayed in a daze.
Wu Yao gritted his teeth.
Where had it gone wrong? The True Knowledge Society hadn’t surfaced, the police were arriving soon, what exactly was Wu Shi Yi panicking about? As long as the Mayor wasn’t insane, he would definitely use this opportunity to completely eradicate the True Knowledge Society. The ones who should be panicking were the Society members themselves; what did they have to…
Wait. The Mayor! The police! A thought flashed through his mind, and Wu Yao felt a chill race up his spine, his body trembling uncontrollably.
That was it. That explained all the inconsistencies.
The Mayor, the police, the True Knowledge Society, the dog-fighting arena, Uncle Wang, and his trafficking ring—so far, all the factions Wu Yao had encountered were on the same side! It was just that the Mayor wanted the people on the island to view the police and the True Knowledge Society as rival forces.
Wu Shi Yi must have learned some information on the ground floor. It was precisely because the police were arriving that it was so tense. It didn’t know what the police would do once they entered: would they arrest the bad guys and pack the victims off to the “quarantine ward” for tea, or would they simply kill everyone present?
