Chapter 10: The First World (10)
Sirens wailed at the end of the street.
The “True Knowledge Society” didn’t linger long, after posing Uncle Wang’s corpse in a prayer-like position, they drove away.
Officer Xiao Liu and Officer Qin, whom Wu Yao had met earlier that day, stepped out of the police car and loaded the “unconscious” man and dog into the back. As the door slammed shut, an unfamiliar male voice spoke from outside: “The victim looks familiar, I think I’ve seen him before.”
Officer Qin gave a hum. “Wu Yao. The guy who caused a scene by mistaking pig kidneys from a basement for human kidneys.”
“He’s truly unlucky. Scared out of his wits during the day, only to run into this at night. Judging by the scene, it looks like this man kidnapped him, only to crash the car and have the driver flee the scene.”
“Come here! There’s another body hidden in the back of the van!”
Officer Xiao Liu ground his teeth in frustration. “Heart torn out, it’s the True Knowledge Society again! Those cultist maniacs are completely lawless!”
The System had originally disliked the island’s police, but after witnessing the cult’s handiwork, it decided the police were better after all. Even if they hauled you to the station, they’d only make you drink “amnesia tea.” They weren’t like the True Knowledge Society, ripping people’s organs out in broad daylight.
Wu Yao opened his compendium, but no new fragments had appeared. When the Society killed, they had mentioned a “True God,” so he had expected to unlock a new entry.
Officer Xiao Liu was arguing with Officer Qin. The victim was still unconscious, and Liu wanted to send him to the hospital for a check-up. Officer Qin disagreed, insisting on taking him to the police station. The System listened for a moment. “Liu is a decent guy, but it’s a shame he knows nothing and has no say at the station.”
“Xiao Yao, don’t be so dejected. Although Uncle Wang kicked the bucket instantly and we didn’t get any leads, wasting our entire night, at least you and Shi Yi are safe. That’s a huge blessing, cheer up.”
Wu Yao’s voice was icy. ‘When the crash happened, half my body was pressed against the car door, and the black dog was on top of me. By all logic, it shouldn’t have been that easy to spot me. How did the Society members see me the moment they approached the window?’
“Uh…good eyesight?”
‘Why were the police so sure Uncle Wang was dead the moment they saw him, judging him as a corpse immediately?’
“Brother, he had a hole in his chest the size of a dinner plate!”
Wu Yao didn’t argue with the System. There weren’t many police in the station, and even fewer had come to the scene, making the footsteps easy to distinguish. The officer who discovered Uncle Wang had declared him a corpse the moment he reached the back of the van. From his angle, he couldn’t have seen the hole in Wang’s chest; he could only see that a person was sitting there.
Everything they encountered tonight reeked of a conspiracy. Wu Yao felt miserable just thinking about it. Heaven knows he had only taken a gig to dog-sit. Officer Qin opened the back door, arranging Wu Yao and the black dog neatly side-by-side, she must have had a touch of OCD. Feeling the dog’s soft, warm body, Wu Yao contemplated his next move.
After feigning sleep at the station for another half hour, Wu Yao finally “woke up.” No one explained what had happened, nor did they give him a chance to ask questions. Wu Yao could only drop a hint to Officer Xiao Liu that there might be other victims besides himself. Xiao Liu looked thoughtful and walked away, scratching his head. Officer Qin handed Wu Yao a cup of “amnesia tea” and dismissed him.
After a long night, the sun had already climbed into the sky. Wu Yao took a deep breath, casting the True Knowledge Society and the Mayor to the back of his mind, and began discussing with the System how to make the black dog happy. Wu Shi Yi followed him silently, no telling what was churning in that canine brain.
It looked at him with a strange expression, Wu Yao actually detected three parts guilt, four parts sympathy, and…as the thought arose, Wu Yao shook his head violently. He was going crazy.
A black sedan pulled up beside Wu Yao. The window rolled down to reveal Officer Xiao Liu’s youthful, delicate face. “Get in. I’ll take you back.”
Wu Shi Yi bared its teeth and gave a sharp woof at him. Xiao Liu leaned forward to look at the dog. “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything to your master.”
The pace of the small town was slow; the streets were mostly empty at this hour, save for a few joggers. The car moved slowly. Wu Yao sat in the back, listening to Officer Xiao Liu beat around the bush, warning him against breaking the law. Finally, he asked coldly, “Mr. Wu, why did you move to this island?”
“Paradise Island has beautiful scenery and good reviews. It’s a livable place.”
“Oh? Is that so? I thought maybe you had a murder charge back home.”
Hearing this, the black dog lifted its head and looked at Wu Yao thoughtfully. Wu Yao wasn’t surprised at all that the young officer suspected him. In just one day, he had “stolen” a dog, discovered a basement full of kidneys, been kidnapped by an apartment manager, had a car accident, seen the manager murdered by a cult, and then been spared by said cult despite having no means to resist.
Wu Yao sighed sadly and patted the dog’s head. “Shi Yi, I’m your master. What kind of look is that? You’re not even taking my side at a time like this.”
He tapped the back of the front seat. “Officer Liu, you shouldn’t say things like that. It’s very disrespectful. I’m going to file a complaint against you.”
Officer Xiao Liu fell silent, and the car returned to quiet. As the sedan pulled up to the apartment building, just as Wu Yao was about to get out, the officer whispered: “The True Knowledge Society didn’t kill you last night, but that doesn’t mean they won’t next time.”
“They seem to have a special interest in large dogs. I don’t know why they didn’t take yours yesterday, but be careful. The True Knowledge Society is very dangerous, you…”
Wu Yao nodded obediently, picking through the information Xiao Liu provided in his mind. Wu Shi Yi pressed tightly against his leg, its body shielding him, as if wary of the officer. This made Wu Yao feel deeply touched. ‘See, Shi Yi is on our side.’
“Of course, you saved its life and…wait, what did you call it?”
‘Wu Shi Yi.’
The System scratched its head, feeling that the pronunciation of “Wu” felt slightly off.
Having only slept a few hours, Wu Yao was sleepy and planned to take a nap. Before sleeping, he lay on the bed chatting with the black dog, hoping to unravel the secrets hidden within it. He told the System to stop fiddling with its “waist” and go investigate something.
In his years working for villains, Wu Yao had helped many crime bosses interrogate moles. He could tell if a target was lying by their slightest micro-expressions. But now, he was facing a dog’s face—a natural lie-detection defense. He probed for a long time, seeing only a faint, forgiving tolerance in the black dog’s eyes.
He had saved its life and given it a comfortable home. No matter how offensive or boring his topics were, it listened intently. The System returned with the data: “There’s quite a lot of discussion about the True Knowledge Society online, it’s a hot topic. It first appeared three years ago, handing out flyers in crowded places and randomly inviting passersby to join. If they took the flyer, they were gifted a big red apple.”
“But the Society’s attire is just too bizarre, passersby walk around them. The islanders don’t know what apples are, they don’t know the fruit is harmless. Seeing people eat apples and then start yelling, screaming, and running around like lunatics, they assume the apples are poisonous and cause hallucinations.”
The System played several downloaded videos titled: “SHOCKING! Another victim of the Poison Apple!” The videos showed men running naked in the street, attacking bystanders. The uploader warned viewers to watch out for the Society and stay away from the apples.
“Because the symptoms of this “mental contagion” are similar to those of eating the poison apples, people online call it the “Red Apple Contagion.””
Wu Yao didn’t comment. The symptoms were similar, of course—the contagion simply didn’t exist. Those people weren’t hallucinating; they were just seeing the “other side” of Paradise Island. The System was fast at searching, but it wasn’t a hacker. Aside from the True Knowledge Society, it hadn’t found anything else he asked for.
‘I can understand you not finding information on the other two zones of Paradise Island, but how can you not find the name of the Mayor?’
The System displayed the search results, and Wu Yao fell silent. The internet said the Mayor’s name was Adam, his wife was Eve, and their son was Wang Xiaoming. Are they playing us for fools? Could they have put even a little bit of effort into fabricating the background info?
Yet, the islanders didn’t find it strange. Just like they had never encountered apples, most people here had never heard the story of Adam and Eve. Wu Yao lay beside the black dog, deliberately holding his phone high so Wu Shi Yi could see. He flipped through the Mayor’s public records, while the big black dog tilted its head, staring at the phone thoughtfully.
The next few days passed without incident. Paradise Island was indeed a beautiful place; days without monsters and cults felt as wonderful as a vacation. Wu Yao’s mood would have been even better if his mission had been progressing smoothly.
Seven days had passed since the kidnapping by Uncle Wang. There was a new manager in the apartments, Wu Yao had found a new job online, and the young couple next door had just had a baby. Officer Xiao Liu had rescued the imprisoned victims from Uncle Wang’s accomplices. Everything was moving forward, except for Wu Shi Yi’s “Mental Stability Value,” which remained stagnant.
Monday morning, Wu Yao opened his mission panel to find the value still stuck at 6. The black dog only gained a tiny bit of spirit when it got its name. Wu Yao had tried many things. The dog had been abandoned by a gambler and likely had trauma, he gave it companionship and security.
It had been beaten and starved, he cared for it meticulously, providing a warm, comfortable life. Based on his professional experience, heart-to-heart talks were effective. Every night, Wu Yao would talk to the dog, telling it made-up stories of his childhood, his dreams, and non-existent friends from afar.
He even tried playing the “pitiful victim,” creating a persona of someone sunny and cheerful on the outside but sensitive and fragile on the inside, waiting for the dog to play the savior.
It was useless. Wu Shi Yi would only gaze at him with gentle warmth and give him a comforting nuzzle. The System and Wu Yao were partners; if this job succeeded, both made money. With no progress, the System grew anxious.
“Xiao Yao, standard tactics aren’t working. There’s only one trick left! It’s not lonely, sensitive, or fragile. It didn’t give up even after being abandoned. It has a will of iron, yet such low mental value. There’s only one possibility: Shi Yi is starved for love!”
‘…’
“What’s with that expression! Love really can change a person! Why do you think the company has a “Romance Department”!”
Wu Yao rubbed his temples. ‘The only thing in this world that changes a person is money. And it’s a dog, I’m a human, we aren’t compatible.’
“Didn’t you say Wu Shi Yi is human, just seen as a dog by those who haven’t made contact?”
‘Then I’d rather it be a dog.’
Wu Yao’s tone was odd. The System suddenly recalled their past chats, where Wu Yao had mentioned he preferred his current line of work. It was higher difficulty, sure, but he didn’t have to serve stupid living people.
The System urged him to try, if he succeeded, he’d at least make 150,000, a guaranteed profit. Wu Yao, who was usually all smiles, sighed with a darkened face. “Knock it off, Brother. Don’t ever mention this again.”
People’s hearts were unpredictable, he’d have to be crazy to fall in love with anyone.
Wu Shi Yi woke up on time and ate its food dutifully, appearing mentally stable, but Wu Yao knew it vomited in the bathroom after every meal. It suffered from insomnia every night, and when it finally slept, it had nightmares. There was a hurdle in its heart it hadn’t crossed. As long as he could solve that, the mission might have a chance.
The black dog didn’t want to live, but it wouldn’t actively seek death. It was like an obedient doll: doing whatever Wu Yao asked, and staying on the bed in standby mode if no instructions were given. This can’t go on; the person inside will be destroyed.
Wu Yao combed through Wu Shi Yi’s life trajectory and decided it was time to try the backup plan. He walked to the bed, leaned over, and whispered: “Shi Yi, you used to be a fighting dog, right?”
The black dog froze, looking up to scrutinize him. Wu Yao bit his lower lip, making a decision. “Do you still want to compete? I’ll take you to the dog-fighting arena to watch, okay?”
The big dog’s usually calm, gentle eyes suddenly widened. It climbed up and stood on the bed, staring at Wu Yao in disbelief. It was silently questioning him: Why would you do this to me?
