Being a Lucky Star in a Game [Holographic] - Chapter 1
“Su Wenqi! Be careful! Hold my hand and don’t let go!” As Su Wenqi looked up, he saw his classmate, Zhang Yunle, with a face full of intense effort and anxiety. Zhang Yunle had reached out and was gripping Su Wenqi’s arm tightly, fearing he might fall.
The cause of this event traces back to the National Day holiday. Before the break, the dormitory leader, Zhang Yunle, proposed that they hold a group-building activity. After all, they had known each other for so long but had never gone on a trip together. How could they miss such a great opportunity to strengthen their bonds?
Encouraged by his matchmaking, everyone enthusiastically signed up. Su Wenqi originally did not want to go because he had part-time jobs during the National Day period. The pay was much higher than usual, and for him, this period represented a significant source of income to cover his living expenses.
Zhang Yunle and the others in the dormitory were well aware of Su Wenqi’s living conditions. They racked their brains to find ways to make up for the income he would lose during this time.
In the end, Zhang Yunle came up with a solution. He remembered seeing on another classmate’s social media feed the day before that this classmate was looking for a tutor for his younger brother. This classmate was a wealthy second-generation rich kid from the local area, and the salary offered was quite generous, attracting many students looking for part-time work.
Thinking of this, Zhang Yunle hurriedly contacted that classmate. Due to his excellent social skills, he had some rapport with the student and was trusted by him regarding any recommendations, so the student immediately agreed.
After informing Su Wenqi of the matter, everyone in the dormitory looked at him with eager eyes, awaiting his answer.
Looking at their expectant gazes, Su Wenqi felt touched; he knew they were doing this for his own good. He had an aloof personality and had few friends growing up. After starting university, the roommates never minded his distance; on the contrary, whenever there was something good, they thought of him. He was not a person who didn’t know how to appreciate kindness. Since they had already arranged everything, he decided to go on the trip with them to relax his mind.
Upon receiving his answer, the dormitory members cheered. Having lived together for so long, they already understood Su Wenqi’s personality. He wasn’t truly aloof; he was just slow to warm up.
Umbrellas left on tables on rainy days, packages he didn’t have time to pick up, and the hot water kettle filled every time he returned in winter—Su Wenqi never mentioned these small deeds to them, nor did he seek credit. Since Su Wenqi didn’t want to talk about it, they didn’t expose him, but they quietly remembered his kindness in their hearts.
The main reason for this trip was that they were frightened by Su Wenqi’s recent life-risking work attitude. He left early and returned late every day, and other than in the classroom, he was nowhere to be found.
Occasionally, when they met in the classroom, they could sense his gaunt figure and increasingly pale complexion. They were deeply worried, so they combined their ideas and came up with this method: to take him hiking to help him decompress.
After checking the weather and temperature, they confirmed the date for the outing. When they arrived, the sun was shining bright, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky—a perfect day for hiking. They didn’t choose a famous tourist attraction because they didn’t want to waste their holiday stuck in traffic during the peak season.
Thus, under the recommendation of the local, Zhang Yunle, they went to a mountain with beautiful scenery in their hometown that didn’t attract many tourists. Along the way, everyone talked and laughed, and the atmosphere was exceptionally joyous. Infected by this mood, the tense nerves of Su Wenqi also relaxed significantly.
Recently, the director of the orphanage had been in poor health and frequently needed to go to the hospital for check-ups, which required significant expenses. Their orphanage was located in a remote area and hadn’t received donations from kind-hearted people for many years; it relied entirely on the donations from those who had left or children who had been adopted to barely survive.
Auntie Zhou is the director of the orphanage. Two or three months ago, she suddenly fainted. Accompanied by others, she was sent to the hospital and underwent a detailed examination. It was discovered that she had cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, which was inseparable from her long-term overwork.
Auntie Zhou’s husband and son died in a car accident many years ago. Heartbroken, she left her hometown and, by a stroke of fate, took over the orphanage from the previous director.
She gave all her energy and love to the children there, carefully selecting suitable adoptive families for them and making regular follow-up visits regarding their situations.
She also put a lot of effort into the children who were not very sociable, including Su Wenqi. Therefore, upon learning of Auntie Zhou’s illness, Su Wenqi saved enough for his own living expenses and sent all his remaining savings to her.
He had also consulted doctors about Auntie Zhou’s condition. It was curable, but it required a high medical fee. He knew Auntie Zhou’s personality; if she knew the medical costs were too high, she would definitely give up treatment. However, Su Wenqi did not want to lose such a family member who had been good to him. So, after he finally persuaded Auntie Zhou to agree to treatment, he started his day-and-night part-time work.
After entering university, influenced by the others in the dormitory, Su Wenqi’s personality gradually opened up. He was handsome and had a gentle nature, so he did not encounter too many obstacles in his part-time work, and Auntie Zhou’s condition was also improving.
Therefore, after Zhang Yunle arranged everything, he did not refuse the others’ kindness and readily accepted the travel plan.
Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, looking up, one could see the towering and magnificent green mountain body, as well as the ethereal, winding clouds surrounding the mountain range. Looking at it, his mood felt much lighter.
After Zhang Yunle parked the car, the group began to walk toward the summit along the mountain path. The tourists on the road were not as crowded as those at famous attractions. Everyone walked in groups, talking and laughing, stopping from time to time to appreciate the scenery along the way.
Su Wenqi’s group was the same; they brought tents and other supplies suitable for staying overnight, preparing to camp at the summit and watch the sunrise the next morning.
They were not in a hurry, so they took many photos along the way. One of the roommates had a hobby of photography and brought a professional camera to guide the group of “dull geese” in posing.
“Wenqi, turn your body to the side, then tilt your head slightly and look at the ground. Hey~ exactly like that! As expected, when you’re handsome, everything looks good in a photo. Unlike these guys, even if I hired a master photographer, there’s no way to fix their poorly coordinated bodies.” Liu Zhang teased the others.
The others heard Liu Zhang’s mockery and were unhappy, rolling up their sleeves with evil smiles, intending to deal with him. Everyone was in a mess of laughter. Seeing the lively atmosphere, Su Wenqi couldn’t help but reveal a sincere smile, and this moment was captured by Liu Zhang’s rapidly clicking camera.
Joking was just joking, and the teasing was just friendly banter, so nobody took it to heart. Along the way, they continued to guide poses and take photos normally. They had a late lunch halfway up the mountain, rested for a while, bought some supplies, and then continued on their way.
By the time they climbed to the summit, it was already close to dusk. There were merchants at the top, and they had already booked a place to stay. Climbing the mountain took quite a bit of energy, so they headed straight to a barbecue restaurant, paid the deposit, took the materials, and chose a prime spot to enjoy the night view while barbecuing.
The environment in Zhang Yunle’s hometown was quite good. At night, the bright moon was in the sky, and the surrounding stars could be seen very clearly. Liu Zhang couldn’t help but sigh: “This scene is exactly the same as when I looked up at the sky as a child. As the years change, only they remain unchanged.”
“Hey, getting literary on us? But this environment is truly impeccable; we definitely wouldn’t see a view like this in the city.” Zhang Yunle laughed when he heard Liu Zhang’s melancholic tone. However, Liu Zhang was indeed right; the stars next to the moon had circled it year after year.
Su Wenqi also looked up at the sky. In the vast, boundless night sky, the stars were twinkling, as if they had brought him back to the summers of his childhood. Auntie Zhou would take the children from the orphanage, spread mats on the ground, and lie down to count the stars with everyone. Thinking of the past, his weary mood eased a lot.
After dinner and enjoying the night view for a while, everyone set up camp. After the tents were assembled, they all went back to rest. Climbing the mountain took a lot of physical strength, and before long, they all drifted into dreamland.
The next day, Su Wenqi was woken up by his alarm. He was a light sleeper and could be startled awake by the slightest movement. After getting dressed and opening the tent, he saw the first hint of the sun, so he took responsibility for waking the others. Soon, they were all dressed and came out.
This was the perfect time to watch the sunrise, and other tourists who had camped at the summit also came out one after another.
At dawn, the earth slowly awakened. The light of the sunrise gradually dyed the sky red, changing the colors from deep blue to golden—beautiful and magnificent. This kind of scenery could not be described in words or recorded; Su Wenqi stared blankly at the beautiful view, using his eyes to record the scene.
After watching the sunrise, they packed their luggage and prepared to go down the mountain. On the way, Su Wenqi gradually began to discuss the insights of this trip with everyone and agreed to travel with them again when they had time on future holidays. This made the others very touched—the child had finally grown up and knew how to go out and have fun with friends (sobbing).
Watching the group of them acting silly, Su Wenqi couldn’t help but shake his head and sigh. His luck was pretty good to have met a few like-minded friends.
On the way down the mountain, the weather suddenly changed. The once clear sky was covered by dark clouds, and the wind began to blow slowly. Su Wenqi frowned and suggested to the others that they go down the mountain earlier. They stopped messing around; they had checked the weather when they left, and there was no rain in the forecast for these days, so they hadn’t brought umbrellas. Now, they were still some distance from the halfway point, and they had to reach their destination quickly.
Other tourists on the road also quickened their pace. The wind grew stronger, and they didn’t even dare to walk around freely. They found a corner with a large rock and hid their bodies between the rock and the mountain to prevent being blown away.
After Liu Zhang went in, Su Wenqi also prepared to go in to hide, but an inexplicable gust of wind suddenly blew, sending Su Wenqi straight toward the edge of the mountain path.
“Ugh!” Su Wenqi’s reaction was quite fast. When his body was lifted by the wind, he grabbed a nearby tree, but the wind was too strong and lifted him completely, and his palms were scraped raw.
Seeing this, the others no longer hid behind the rock. Zhang Yunle displayed a speed he had never even shown during an 800-meter run, quickly reached Su Wenqi’s side, and grabbed his arm. By this time, Su Wenqi had already been blown beneath the boardwalk, relying entirely on his hands to hold onto the chains to keep from falling.
Liu Zhang and the others were a step slower than Zhang Yunle, but they also grabbed Su Wenqi’s other arm, while the others helped pull from behind. Passing tourists who were also hiding from the wind saw someone blown off and kindly went to help the others pull.
Su Wenqi’s palms were bleeding. The wind engulfing him grew stronger, and he felt he was losing his grip on the chains. Unbeknownst to them, the wind had stopped in other places, but the wind around Su Wenqi had not dissipated it was blowing even more fiercely.
Some tourists who hadn’t stepped forward immediately helped call for rescue, but in this location, only manual rescue was possible, and it would likely take some time for help to arrive.
Su Wenqi’s fingers were slowly being forced away from the chains. Zhang Yunle and Liu Zhang used all their strength to pull him, but it was to no avail. Suddenly, another gust of wind blew, directly separating Su Wenqi from the others and sending him plunging downward.
“Wenqi!!!” On the eve of his fall, Su Wenqi saw the anxious expressions of his roommates and the tears sliding down their faces.
[What bad luck. My life was finally getting better, and I had made friends. I actually died just like this. I’m so unwilling.] As he fell, Su Wenqi’s life flashed before his eyes like a revolving lantern. He loved life, and no matter when, he had never thought of giving up. He hadn’t expected his life to end here.
