Chapter 81: She Underestimated Xie Yin’s Love, And Underestimated The Deep Craving For Xie Yin In Her Own Soul.
Late at night, Ji Yunfei sat on the edge of her bed, staring intensely at the blank notebook. “See it with your heart… Ugh! If the heart can see, why do we need eyes?” She collapsed onto the bed and scooped up her two cats—one black, one white—who were lazily licking their fur. In her frustration, she ruffled their cotton-soft, fluffy fur.
“Meow!” Being petted against the grain, the two cats instantly turned into prickly sea urchins. It was a hilarious sight. They scrambled out of Ji Yunfei’s “evil” hands, shot her an unfriendly glare, and scurried out of the bedroom.
“Xie Yin… what exactly did we go through together?” Ji Yunfei was alone again. She clutched a small stuffed dog in one hand and picked up the blank notebook with the other, murmuring to herself.
Gradually, drowsiness washed over her, and a watery glaze coated her clear eyes. As she closed them, her grip relaxed, and the blank notebook fell squarely onto her face.
“Ouch…” Despite the heavy thud against her face, her sleepiness was too strong. She only let out a pained mumble and didn’t open her eyes, allowing the notebook to remain draped over her face.
This night was destined to be restless.
In her dream, she saw Xie Yin’s blood-soaked figure walking further and further away. Ji Yunfei reached out to chase her, but found herself pinned to the spot like a nail, forced to watch as the figure gradually vanished from her sight.
The violent emotional shock pulled her out of the dream instantly. She bolted upright, screaming: “No, don’t! Yin-yin!”
Her heart drummed against her chest. She panted heavily, looking around to realize she was still in her bedroom, which allowed her to slowly calm down.
Was that… a dream?
She picked up the notebook she had swiped off her face in the chaos. As she flipped it open, her eyes widened, and her pupils trembled.
The once-blank pages were now densely packed with writing, glowing with a faint golden light that bathed Ji Yunfei’s face in a soft, sun-like hue.
She looked closely and recognized the handwriting instantly: it was Xie Yin’s. This was a memory journal. Most of the contents matched her dreams, but some details were different.
It seemed to be Xie Yin’s memories from her own singular perspective…
“She doesn’t want me anymore. She says she hates demons the most, especially snake demons… it was I who caused the death of her entire clan…” This passage was written on a yellowed page where a distinct water-stained patch remained—the mark of a tear.
How heartbroken must she have been when she wrote this?
But Ji Yunfei thought, Xie Yin is such a big fool, to be so easily deceived by a lie she had woven at random.
But if she hadn’t said those things, how could she have ever borne to leave? If she stayed by Ji Yunfei’s side, those lunatics would surely find her. If they caught her, they would never let her go.
Ji Yunfei continued flipping through the memory journal page by page. Fragmented memory shards in her mind swirled like a hurricane, finally linking together. By the time she finished the book, the disjointed pieces of her past had finally converged into a coherent narrative within her mind.
“Yin-yin…” The missing puzzle piece was finally found; the void in her soul was finally filled. When Ji Yunfei came to her senses, her face was already soaked with tears, and her lips twitched with the ebb and flow of her emotions.
She finally understood why her heart had rippled uncontrollably the very first time she saw Xie Yin in this life.
It was her soul screaming.
She had used one lifetime to save Xie Yin from the brink of death, and two more lifetimes to weave a giant web of lies to keep her away from those madmen—while simultaneously forcing Xie Yin to endure so much pain.
Why do you still persist in finding me? Ji Yunfei didn’t understand. To push Xie Yin away, she had said such cruel things and performed such cold-hearted acts…
Lifetime after lifetime, Xie Yin still chased after her relentlessly.
Did she love Xie Yin? The answer was a resounding yes. But if loving each other meant Xie Yin falling into the clutches of those lunatics over and over, it would be better to sever all possibilities from the start.
However, she had underestimated Xie Yin’s love, and she had underestimated the deep craving for Xie Yin buried in the depths of her own soul.
In every lifetime, even without her memories, she had—without exception—fallen in love with Xie Yin.
But after regaining her memories, she was forced to push her away with her own hands, crushing that sincere heart into the dirt time and again.
In her first reincarnation, she was the eldest daughter of a Great Exorcist family. After learning the truth, she naively believed that if Xie Yin was thoroughly disappointed in her and stayed far away from human society—safe within the Snake Den—she would be at peace.
As long as Xie Yin hid well, those lunatics wouldn’t find her. Meanwhile, Ji Yunfei would do her best to eliminate those persistent bastards, even if it cost her her life.
She thought so, and she did so. That night, the mountain was a mess of blood and flesh; she killed every hunter that came her way.
She was just one step away from killing the leader of those madmen…
But because of that one small gap, she not only died under the Vajra Scepter but also let Xie Yin see her in that wretched state.
Before her life faded completely, she used the last of her strength to alter Xie Yin’s memories and transport her safely back to the Snake Den.
But even after the memory alteration, Xie Yin remained stubborn, insisting on returning to her side in every subsequent life…
No matter how she was pushed away, she would reappear in the next life.
And this time, they had returned with a vengeance. Could she still protect Xie Yin?
Having regained her memories, Ji Yunfei began investigating the leader of the lunatics. However, records of this organization were scarce. After months of searching, she only knew that this person was elusive and rarely showed their face.
Unless his subordinates suffered extreme losses, he would never act personally.
Furthermore, this person had a peculiar hobby: he loved to disguise himself as others, lurking around his prey and their loved ones, playing games of deception. He derived joy from seeing his prey toyed with and confused.
The pain of the Vajra Scepter piercing her heart was still vivid in her memory. Even now, Ji Yunfei would shiver involuntarily at the thought of it. That figure in the ghost mask and that death-knell-like laughter remained etched in her mind.
This time, no matter the cost, she had to kill him once and for all.
Closing the ancient texts, Ji Yunfei stood up and walked out of the library.
It was already January, the heart of winter. The night was cold, and the wind felt like a blade scraping against her cheeks. But none of that compared to the pain of hearing that Xie Yin’s condition had still not improved.
“Yin-yin, it’s snowing…” City C had welcomed its first snow of the year. Ji Yunfei reached out, letting a drifting snowflake land on her palm, slowly melting into a small puddle of water in the warmth.
Snowflakes cannot be held, and right now, neither could Xie Yin.
The future, too, was beyond her grasp.
Passing through the commercial street, Ji Yunfei saw her reflection in a shop window: reddened eyes, a nose flushed from the cold, and a body covered in snow—she looked like a fragile snow doll.
She shook her head, and the little figure in the glass did the same. The snow on her head was quickly shaken off, revealing her chestnut-brown hair. She locked eyes with her reflection, forced a stiff smile, and mocked herself: “I really look a bit pathetic, don’t I…”
Ring, ring— The phone rang in the empty street. It was sudden and startled her.
“Hello, Grandma—” Ji Yunfei answered, suppressing the sadness of the past few months, trying her best to sound like her usual self.
“Xiao Fei, are you coming home for the New Year?” Grandma’s warm voice came through the receiver.
Only then did Ji Yunfei realize the Lunar New Year was almost here. She had been so consumed with studying those madmen that she had lost track of time.
“Hello? Xiao Fei, are you listening?” Grandma asked again when Ji Yunfei didn’t speak.
“I’m here, Grandma. Of course I’m coming home. I miss you so much,” Ji Yunfei smiled and replied softly.
After chatting a bit more, Ji Yunfei hung up and continued walking slowly through the snow, thinking about the legends she had heard since childhood.
She felt that the legend of the “Snake Beauty” circulating in her village couldn’t be simple. Perhaps this trip home would bring unexpected gains.
Besides, perhaps she needed the festive atmosphere of the New Year to wash away her current exhaustion.
Meanwhile, in the Snake Den, the person lying in the bed with gauze wrapped around her left leg and eyes tightly shut moved her finger slightly. Her eyelids flickered as if she were about to wake up.
Though the movement was tiny, Xie Chu, who was watching over her, caught it. She sat up straight, her pupils trembling with disbelief.
She rubbed her eyes to make sure it wasn’t a hallucination. Controlling her racing heart, she sent a spiritual transmission to A-Mo: “Xiao Mo, A-Yin seems to be waking up…”
Upon receiving the message, A-Mo immediately dropped what she was doing and rushed to the cabin. As soon as she entered, she saw Xie Yin leaning against the headboard with her eyes half-open.
“How are you? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?” A-Mo hurried to the bedside, injecting spiritual power to inspect her condition while asking for her feelings.
The newly awakened Xie Yin was still very weak. She leaned against the wall behind her and shook her head: “I can’t say. My head still hurts, and I feel as if something is missing.”
“I shouldn’t have been so playful and snuck out…” Xie Yin held her head, uttering this seemingly random sentence.
“……” The other two in the room went silent, a bad premonition sinking in.
Seeing that they didn’t speak but stared at her with expressions she couldn’t understand, Xie Yin felt strange: “Mother, are you angry? I promise I won’t sneak out to play again. I’ll stay properly in the Snake Den.”
“But… how did you find me?” Xie Yin could only remember being hunted by those masked lunatics in robes, and finally lying dying in the grass by the road.
She thought she was dead for sure, but she had unexpectedly appeared back home, and she was even…
In human form?
Thinking of this, excitement colored her tone. She looked at her hands over and over, then tried to grasp the air, saying in disbelief: “Mother, have I actually transformed?”
Could this be a blessing in disguise?
Xie Yin was still immersed in the joy of her transformation, completely failing to notice that the faces of the other two had turned pale as she spoke.
“A-Yin, you’ve just woken up and haven’t fully recovered. Don’t get so excited.” Xie Chu bit her lip and patted the shoulder of the smiling Xie Yin, then looked at the dazed A-Mo: “Xiao Mo and I have something to discuss. You get some rest.”
“Xiao Mo, let’s talk somewhere else.”
