Beauty Snake - Chapter 75
Chapter 75: “But A-Fei, I Can’t Bear To Leave You…”
“Xie Yin! What are you doing!” The snake-shaped necklace around her neck instantly became scalding hot. Uncle Mo’s roar erupted in her ear, tearing a hole through the chaos in Xie Yin’s mind and forcibly pulling her back from the brink of losing control.
“Uncle Mo…?” The crimson hue at the corners of her eyes gradually faded, though not completely. Her sharp snake pupils were now tinged with a faint, dazed confusion.
“Your emotional fluctuation values went off the charts! If I hadn’t sent a transmission, you would have lost it! What happened?” Far away in the Snake Den, Uncle Mo felt Xie Yin’s emotions stabilizing and finally let out a small sigh of relief.
Xie Yin, not yet fully awake, did not answer. She simply frowned slightly, staring at the person in front of her.
Before her were two identical faces—one with stubborn defiance in her eyes, and the other with a love that could embrace the world. Xie Yin shook her head, and the two faces gradually merged back into the Ji Yunfei currently pinned beneath her.
“A… Fei…” She moved her lips, her voice dryer and raspier than either of them expected.
“It’s me, I’m here…” Ji Yunfei responded in a soft, low voice, trying to minimize any further stimulation to Xie Yin.
As her sanity gradually returned, Xie Yin saw her hand still gripping Ji Yunfei’s neck, and more clearly, she saw the “disaster” she had caused on the other’s lips and shoulder.
The grip on her neck was suddenly withdrawn. Ji Yunfei could finally take a deep breath of air. She lowered her eyes and adjusted her breathing.
“What have I done…” Xie Yin stared at the two puncture wounds on Ji Yunfei’s shoulder that still had traces of blood. The hand she had pulled back from Yunfei’s neck trembled as it touched her own protruding snake fangs.
Realizing what she was feeling, her pupils constricted sharply. Her whole body began to shake uncontrollably as she slowly turned her head to look at her lower half.
When her gaze fell upon the yellow-and-black snake tail coiled tightly around Ji Yunfei, Xie Yin’s heart first leaped to her throat in shock, then plummeted to the bottom of an abyss filled with rising regret and despair.
She had been discovered—her identity as a snake demon…
She had fallen for the trap set by those lunatics.
She had been blinded by the darkest thoughts in her heart, her disguise had been stripped away, and she had harmed the person she cherished most…
How could she…
Xie Yin slowly turned back. When Ji Yunfei saw her face, she was stunned; her heart was instantly flooded with bitterness and heartache. Even with her back to the light, Ji Yunfei could see the continuous stream of tears rolling down Xie Yin’s face. A few drops fell onto her skin; for some reason, they felt scalding, like boiling water.
“A-Fei… I’m… sorry…”
“I shouldn’t have faced you like this. No… this is wrong…” Xie Yin was still sobbing, the tears on her face seemingly endless.
Gradually, the sobbing weakened. Xie Yin turned her head away. Ji Yunfei couldn’t see her expression, but could only hear her quiet mumble: “I ruined everything…”
“They are probably coming…”
“Who are ‘they’…?” The contextless words left Ji Yunfei in a fog. Her intuition told her there were many critical things she didn’t know. She wanted to ask, but at that moment, Xie Yin turned back. Yunfei met a gaze that was a complex weave of reluctance and determination.
Why look at her with such eyes? A look that made one feel infinite desolation just by seeing it, as if in the next second, the two would never see each other again in this life.
Xie Yin smiled—so suddenly that Ji Yunfei couldn’t react. Her curved eyelashes squeezed out the last teardrop. Xie Yin reached out to stroke Ji Yunfei’s cheek, her eyes pinned to the other’s face as if she wanted to trace every feature and engrave them into her soul.
“It doesn’t matter if you hate me, or fear me, or want to get rid of me… as long as you are safe.”
“But A-Fei, I can’t bear to leave you…”
“I’m sorry…” As those words ended, the familiar narcissus fragrance enveloped Ji Yunfei’s nose once more. Unlike every previous time, it was much stronger—it even choked tears from her eyes.
It must be the scent that’s making me cry… right?
A sharp pain hit the back of her neck, and Ji Yunfei’s consciousness fell into darkness. In the final second before her eyes closed, she saw Xie Yin kissing the back of her hand with the devotion of a believer.
“I love you…”
Bang, bang, bang—! The bedroom door was violently pounded. Xie Yin, who had fully regained her senses and finished tidying up, was sitting by Ji Yunfei’s side, carefully tracing her features with her finger.
“No sense of timing,” she clicked her tongue. She closed the bedroom door, walked to the front entrance, and looked through the peephole.
Just as she expected, the visitors were unfriendly.
Opposite the peephole stood an old monk in red robes. His face was full of compassion, looking as though he could embrace all living beings. But Xie Yin knew this was nothing more than a disguise to hide their evil intentions. They were a group of beasts and lunatics who claimed to save the world while satisfying their own selfish desires—experts in manipulation and foolery.
Creak— The door opened.
“Amitabha—”
“Tsk. It’s just you and me here. Why keep up the act?” Looking at the hypocritical old monk, Xie Yin snorted with disdain. She leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed, waiting to see his next performance.
If they were going to fight, then fight. She would entertain them. At worst, if she couldn’t win, she’d run; if she couldn’t run, she’d die. Simple and clean. Anything was better than standing here and being sickened by his sanctimonious, hypocritical display.
The old monk visibly stiffened at her words. His hand gripping the sandalwood prayer beads tightened instantly, veins popping.
“Benefactor remains stubborn, and has even gone so far as to harm a human tonight. I intended to spare your life, but you are insolent and unrepentant!” The old monk’s brow furrowed into a fierce glare. He produced a golden alms bowl and struck it: “Today, this old monk shall act on behalf of Heaven and subdue you, demon!”
“Heh. It’s the middle of the night; don’t you worry about disturbing the neighbors?” As the bowl rang out, the layering echoes felt like a death curse to Xie Yin, making her head throb and spin. Even so, she forced herself to stay alert, taunting the old monk: “If you have the ability, catch me today. Just remember not to let the humans notice anything strange.”
With that, her figure blurred. She slammed the door to Ji Yunfei’s apartment and vanished on the spot, like a gust of wind drifting into the distance.
Beep-beep— In the underground parking lot of Lanting Yayuan, a yellow-and-black Ferrari with a light layer of dust met its owner after a long hiatus. Its headlights finally flickered to life.
“Heh. Want to catch me? Try outrunning my car first, bastard.” Dressed in a black leather jacket, Xie Yin squinted at the black figures slowly approaching in the distance. She curled her lip in a mocking smile.
Vroom—! The roar of a supercar engine erupted. Xie Yin stuck her hand out the window, gave a slow “thumbs down” to the demon hunters who had “borrowed” a civilian car in the distance, and floored the accelerator. The supercar shot out of the underground lot like an arrow, heading for the main road.
“Uncle Mo, they are following closely. About three or four cars. It looks like they intend to wipe me out in one go.”
“They really spent a fortune on this.” Looking at the cars in the rearview mirror constantly overtaking others and closing in on her, Xie Yin shook her head with a cold laugh. Her heart remained unmoved. If they wanted her life, they’d have to earn it.
“Don’t panic. Maintain your distance and don’t let them get near you. Those people will do anything.”
“Don’t drive into the city. Drawing human attention isn’t good for anyone.” Uncle Mo’s tone was steady, but Xie Yin could hear a slight tremor in his voice.
“Don’t worry, I understand.” Xie Yin smiled, pushing the pedal deeper. She sped past several normally driving cars and turned onto the road leading to the countryside.
The cars following her like leeches gradually faded into the traffic and the night. Xie Yin breathed a small sigh of relief and sent a transmission to Uncle Mo: “I’ve lost them for now. What’s next?”
“Don’t celebrate too early. Keep driving. Tell me what happened. How did this start so suddenly?”
“……” Xie Yin fell silent. She couldn’t exactly say she was in the middle of that with her partner…
After a moment’s hesitation, she spoke slowly: “I was set up. It’s my fault for being too careless and giving them an opening. I suspect there was something in that wine…” Xie Yin remembered the waiter and that glass. Looking back, there was plenty of space and no water on the floor—why did that waiter happen to trip right next to her? Truly careless.
“Can you lose them completely? If you can, get back to the clan quickly to lie low.”
“They likely have more people than the ones I just saw. The chance of losing them entirely is slim.” Xie Yin checked the mirror and saw the cars appearing behind her again. She sighed. “Speak of the devil. They’re like shadows.”
“They caught up?”
“More than that, they’ve added more people. Just as I thought.” Xie Yin paused, then added, “To put this much effort into catching just me… should I feel flattered?”
“You still have the heart to joke at a time like this? You child!” Hearing Xie Yin’s feigned nonchalance, Uncle Mo was slightly angry but mostly helpless.
“The atmosphere was too heavy; I was just livening things up.” Xie Yin smiled, immediately acting pampered.
“Fine, you kid.” Uncle Mo smiled too, but quickly regained his solemnity. “A-Yin, if there really is no other way, try this move…”
“That snake necklace has another use…”
“……”
“Don’t use it unless absolutely necessary. Understood?”
“Understood. Don’t worry, I’ll be back safe and sound.” Xie Yin answered lightly, but her heart was fully prepared. Looking at the civilian cars behind her that were relentlessly pursuing and threatening to overtake her, she gritted her teeth and floored the accelerator.
Vroom—!
As the car sped along, the scenery shifted from a bustling city to desolate wildlands. The lights gradually dimmed until everything was pitch black. Relying on her headlights, Xie Yin could only see about three or four meters around the car; everything else was a void of unknown darkness.
What humans feared was always the unknown, and she was no exception. Her heart raced in sync with the car’s speed. Xie Yin stared intently at the road, not daring to lose focus for a second.
Suddenly, from directly in front of her, high beams flared, blinding her.
Wolves in front, tigers behind. Xie Yin laughed—a wild, arrogant laugh, like a rose growing recklessly amidst thorns.
“You lunatics!”
“So this is how it’s going to be? Then let’s see who’s more willing to risk their life!”
