Chapter 6: Why Do You Keep Your Arm Around Me?
“Don’t move if you don’t want to be seen.”
Fu Shiyue forcefully pressed Lu Miao’s head down and greeted the middle-aged man walking toward them. “Director Lu.”
“Shiyue?” Lu Guoxun was quite surprised. “I didn’t expect to run into you here.”
Lu Miao hadn’t expected it either—that the two of them actually knew each other.
Lu Guoxun usually walked with his head held high, but standing before the handsome and tall Fu Shiyue, he was a head shorter. His “successful businessman” aura was completely suppressed, making him look like a bloated, greasy middle-aged man.
“I haven’t seen you in a year or so; why did you suddenly return?”
Fu Shiyue’s smile was faint. “I just finished a mission and came back to rest for a while.”
Lu Guoxun didn’t know that Fu Shiyue had retired. After exchanging a few pleasantries, he asked, “What brings you here?”
Fu Shiyue looked down at the restless Lu Miao in his arms, the smile on his lips remaining unchanged. “My niece is being disobedient at school, so I came to pick her up.”
Lu Guoxun looked at the young girl in front of Fu Shiyue, slightly shocked. “This is your niece?”
Earlier, Lu Guoxun had thought it strange; this girl had kept her back to him, burying her face in Fu Shiyue’s chest. She looked small and delicate, and seeing their intimate posture, Lu Guoxun had assumed he had found himself a college-student girlfriend.
Lu Miao felt Lu Guoxun’s gaze, and her spine stiffened.
Fu Shiyue sensed her tension. His large hand pressed against the back of her head as he feigned a stern tone. “Raise your head and greet him.”
Lu Miao stubbornly refused, her ears turning pink. She looked shy and timid, but in reality, she was cursing up a storm in her mind. Is this damn man intentionally trying to get me caught?
“Disobedient again?” Fu Shiyue leaned into her ear, reprimanding her in a low voice. “How do I usually teach you? You aren’t allowed to be so rude.”
Heh, he was actually putting on a show for her right now!
Lu Miao pinched his clothes hard, wanting him to stop, but she ended up grabbing a handful of his abdominal muscles. Her face flushed as she jerked her hand back.
“If she won’t greet me, then so be it. Don’t force the little girl,” Lu Guoxun said, waving his hand with a smile.
Looking at their close posture, he couldn’t quite put his finger on what felt off. He said meaningfully, “Shiyue, you and your niece have a very good relationship.”
Lu Miao buried her face in the man’s chest in embarrassment. Smelling the crisp, deep scent of ebony on him, she felt a bit lightheaded.
Fu Shiyue smiled to smooth things over, his tone doting. “Not at all. I gave her a bit of a lecture and she started crying; she’s still throwing a tantrum with me.”
As he spoke, he pinched the back of her neck. Lu Miao immediately caught the hint and began to fake a sob.
Lu Guoxun laughed and withdrew his gaze. “Girls have fragile psyches and can’t handle harsh words. Unlike that wild girl Lu Miao—she does nothing but cause me trouble at school. I was in the middle of a meeting when I was called over to wipe her butt.”
Fu Shiyue looked down at the girl in his arms. Lu Miao rolled her eyes internally. Tch, who asked you to care?
Fu Shiyue wanted to say more, but Lu Miao pinched him again.
Fu Shiyue laughed. “Alright, then we won’t disturb you further.”
Having said that, before Lu Guoxun could react, he wrapped Lu Miao in his black windbreaker, kept his arm around her, and walked away.
Lu Guoxun watched the two leave and shook his head. Why does that girl’s back look so familiar?
He entered the faculty office and met the counselor with a serious expression. “I am Lu Miao’s eldest uncle. Where is Lu Miao now?”
The counselor looked at Lu Guoxun in confusion. A “maternal uncle” had just left, and now a “paternal uncle” had arrived?
Strange. Didn’t Lu Miao say she had no one at home except for one uncle?
“You’re looking for Lu Miao? She left with her maternal uncle.”
Lu Guoxun was startled. “What?!”
In the hallway, Lu Miao was bundled in the man’s coat as they walked quickly downstairs.
“How do you know my eldest uncle?”
A deep voice rang out from above her head. “Given my friendship with your uncle, is it strange that I know him?”
Lu Miao curled her lip. “He and my uncle don’t get along at all.”
Lu Guoxun was a relative from Lu Miao’s father’s side. Once, the two men had fought a bitter legal battle for custody of Lu Miao. In the end, Lu Guoxun lost and became Lu Yan’s enemy; they traded snide remarks every time they met.
Lu Miao hated the relatives on the Lu side. They clearly didn’t like her, yet they always pretended to be very affectionate, insisting she “return to her roots.”
Consequently, she had blacklisted the contact information of everyone in the Lu family and never visited during holidays. Since following Lu Yan, she had virtually severed all ties.
But Lu Guoxun wouldn’t give up. Whenever Lu Miao caused trouble, he would appear like a hound catching a scent, accusing Lu Yan of being too lax and lacking the ability to raise her, seizing every opportunity to bring her back to the Lu family.
“Are you on good terms with Lu Guoxun?”
She was testing which side he was on. If they weren’t on the same path, she would draw a line between them immediately.
Fu Shiyue glanced down at her. “Rest easy. We aren’t close.”
“Not close? If you aren’t close, why was he so enthusiastic toward you?” She looked suspiciously at the man’s profound face.
Fu Shiyue tucked Lu Miao under his arm, explaining as they walked, “The reason he could become the head of the Bureau of Culture is because the Fu family helped from behind the scenes.”
Lu Guoxun used to be just a middle-level leader. After receiving support from the Fu family, he personally attended every Fu family banquet with a heavy gift.
However, saying this didn’t dispel the girl’s doubts.
“Lu Yan felt at ease enough to leave you in my care. Do you still not trust his judgment?”
Lu Miao thought about it and felt it made sense. She might not trust this man’s words, but she had to trust Lu Yan. Anyone Lu Yan called to look after her at least wouldn’t harm her.
As they spoke, Fu Shiyue led Lu Miao out of the faculty building. She suddenly realized something was wrong.
“Who said you could manage me?” Lu Miao’s tone was sharp. “Also, why do you keep your arm around me?”
She pushed the man away in a huff. Covering for her was one thing, but had he developed an addiction to holding her?
Lu Miao threw the man off and hurried to make her escape.
Fu Shiyue stared at the fleeing Lu Miao, his eyebrow arching slightly.
When she was begging him, she knew how to hide behind him. Now that she was done using him, she turned her back and refused to recognize him?
Lu Miao hadn’t run far when her collar was suddenly yanked back. She crashed into the man’s solid chest unexpectedly.
“What are you doing?” Lu Miao looked up in a panic. “Let go of me.”
“You agreed to treat me to a meal. Where are you running to?”
“M-m-m… what meal?”
Fu Shiyue narrowed his eyes.
A chill ran down Lu Miao’s back. She swallowed. “I mean, if you don’t know what to eat, I’ll take you for a feast.”
Ten minutes later, Lu Miao led Fu Shiyue into a restaurant outside the school.
“This is the ‘feast’ you’re treating me to?”
Lu Miao heroically pushed the menu toward him. “Order whatever you want. Don’t be polite with me!”
Anyone watching would have thought she was being incredibly generous, ready to order a whole set of delicacies from land, air, and sea.
Fu Shiyue looked at the menu. Aside from dumplings, there were only more dumplings, in various flavors.
He gave a light chuckle.
Lu Miao figured he must look down on the place. She leaned in, winking and nudging him. “This is the only level I can afford. If you find it beneath you, go talk to my uncle and tell him to improve my quality of life—like my allowance, for instance.”
Fu Shiyue shot her a look and snorted. She certainly had her schemes well-calculated.
Lu Miao blinked her expectant little eyes. He poked her forehead and pushed her back. “Sit properly. Don’t try any of your crooked ideas.”
