A strange new transfer student joined the class today.

With golden-blonde hair, round eyes and skin so pale it glowed, he looked like a little mixed-race model straight out of a magazine. The only problem? His handwriting was atrocious. He scribbled his name on the blackboard in jagged lines that looked more like ancient hieroglyphics than Chinese characters.

“Hello, everyone. My name is Jin Manman.”

Shouldering his tiny backpack, the newcomer marched straight to the back of the room. Under the stunned gazes of his classmates, he pulled out a chair and sat right next to the school’s most notorious delinquent.

The movement wasn’t loud, but it was enough to wake Shi Rang.

Agitated, Shi Rang lifted his head, ready to snap at whoever had disturbed him. But then he saw the transfer student looking at him with wide, innocent eyes and a dimpled smile. “Can I sit here?”

Holy crap. Shi Rang thought. What kind of cute little spirit is this?

Shi Rang had always been eccentric and solitary, a lone wolf by nature. But from the moment the transfer student arrived, he became a permanent fixture by Shi Rang’s side sticking to him like a piece of sweet glutinous rice.

Manman followed him everywhere, even waiting outside the door when Shi Rang went to the restroom. It got to the point where Shi Rang felt like he had to break speed records just to use the facilities. He didn’t even dare sleep in class anymore; if he kept his head down for more than five minutes, Manman would lean over and poke his nose to check for a pulse.

“You can’t die, Shi Rang,” the boy would mutter under his breath.

In reality, Manman had been sent back ten years into the past by the Animal Management Bureau. He had been strictly warned never to transform into his true form in front of humans.

But the second he saw Shi Rang, he couldn’t help it. He desperately wanted to turn back into a cat, dive into Shi Rang’s arms, and flip over so his human could rub his belly.

This time, the cat swore to himself, I will protect my owner! I won’t let him die!

The Snippet

At the graduation party after high school, Manman claimed he was drunk. He grabbed Shi Rang, refusing to let him leave, insisting he had a “surprise” for him.

In a dimly lit corner, he guided Shi Rang’s hand toward his backside.

“Do you feel it?” Manman asked, his eyes bright with anticipation.

Shi Rang’s head was spinning, his heart hammering against his ribs so hard it felt like it would pop out of his throat. This is so forward! I haven’t even confessed yet! he thought wildly. Should we just get engaged tomorrow? What kind of rings should I buy?

His mind went blank, and he stammered out, “I feel it… It’s so soft.”

And quite perky. But.  Why did it feel like it was covered in fur?

He looked down. A soft, golden tail was curled right in his palm.

“You” He gasped as the tail gave a little flick against his hand.

Shi Rang struggled to find his voice. “Is this thing electric?”
