Assistant Bai Really Does Have a Three Year Old Child - Chapter 17
Late at night.
Bai Tan was still refining his outline.
There was still no progress.
But this time, he was determined to make a name for himself.
It was no longer about proving something to his mother or hoping she would pay him more attention because of it.
He wanted his mother to know that her choice today was wrong.
Even without her, he could grow up just fine.
It was just that after all this time, the new novel was still stuck on the male lead’s characterization.
When he had no clues, Bai Tan would do something else to look for inspiration.
He picked up the electronic calendar and counted the days.
He was suddenly startled to realize that he had already been Huo Yang’s assistant for twenty-seven days.
Once the internship period passed, if Huo Yang was willing to keep him, they would have to sign a formal contract. At that point, if he wanted to extricate himself after having enough of being an assistant, it would be difficult.
Bai Tan had not forgotten his motivation for becoming an assistant: it was to gather material for a male lead’s persona.
But it had been nearly a month, and Huo Yang didn’t seem to have given him so much as a proper glance. If you said the man was bad, Huo Yang would help him out of a jam; but if you said he was good, Huo Yang’s attitude toward him was worlds apart from how he treated others always ice-cold.
It wasn’t even in line with his male lead setting at all.
Looking at the characterization that had made zero progress, Bai Tan was indeed getting a bit anxious.
He suddenly looked up.
They say you shouldn’t hang yourself from a single tree so, should he…
Change to a different artist? Or maybe some boss or CEO would do.
Once this thought appeared, Bai Tan’s heart began to stir.
Yet, he felt a bit reluctant. Actually, after nearly a month of getting along, he really did like Huo Yang a little.
In the sense of appreciation, that is.
In the midst of his deep thoughts, the manager, Yu Jian, called and got straight to the point:
“Little Bai, your internship is almost up. This month has been a period for both sides to evaluate each other. I’ve asked Huo Yang, and he has no objections. Whether you stay or go is up to you.”
Bai Tan asked:
“If I stay and sign the contract, how long do I have to stay by Teacher Huo’s side?”
“Five-year terms.”
“Five years…” Bai Tan grew even more hesitant.
“Think it over yourself. Personally, I think staying with Huo Yang is a very good choice, but the final decision rests with you.”
After hanging up, Bai Tan leaned back, and the chair caught him steadily.
Five years was too long. His original intention wasn’t truly to be someone’s assistant.
Grinding out one book over five years by then, he didn’t even know if his already sparse readership would still remember him.
He was loyal, but readers might not be. In their line of work, the greatest taboo was falling in love with a “guest.”
Forget it. Leave, just leave.
Bai Tan made up his mind.
In that case, just as the manager said, he had to make things clear to Huo Yang before the end of the month so as not to affect his search for a new assistant.
Two days later.
At an event venue.
Bai Tan sat in a corner clutching his equipment bag, staring blankly at the floor tiles, looking somewhat distracted.
He had thought about it all night but hadn’t figured out how to turn Huo Yang down.
After all, not long ago, Huo Yang had helped him out at the press conference. Turning around and leaving now would be a case of “killing the donkey once it’s finished the haul” it wasn’t honorable.
But he had even already scouted his next subject.
After scrolling through gossip all night, he noticed a male artist. Although his fame didn’t match Huo Yang’s, people gave him a thumbs-up whenever he was mentioned.
Bai Tan looked up gloomily toward the artists taking group photos on stage.
Standing at the center was naturally Huo Yang, while Yang Yueqian who had once been humiliated in every possible way by Qiao Si now actually had the qualification to stand openly beside Huo Yang.
During the half-month the film crew had stopped work, he had gone to record a farming variety show. With his cute appearance and tireless hard work, he became an overnight sensation, gaining tens of millions of followers.
Life was just that magical; you never knew what would happen in the next moment.
The event lasted until midnight. The organizers made things easy by arranging for the artists to stay at the hotel behind the venue.
Bai Tan followed Huo Yang to the hotel, checked every corner in detail, and scanned the room with a laser pointer to ensure there were no hidden pinhole cameras.
He also prepared the bathwater for Huo Yang and tidied the bed.
“Teacher Huo, I’ll head out first. I’ll come to pick you up to go home early tomorrow morning.”
Huo Yang took off his coat and gave a grunt of affirmation.
Bai Tan closed the door gently and ran into Yang Yueqian in the hallway, who was whispering something to a strange man.
Bai Tan gave him a slight nod as a greeting and hurried downstairs to catch the ride-hail car that had been waiting for him for a long time.
Returning home, he showered, changed into a loose oversized T-shirt, sat in front of the coffee table, picked up a beer, took two large gulps, and then happily watched the World Cup.
France versus Germany. There wasn’t a team he particularly liked; he was just watching for the excitement.
But as he watched, his thoughts drifted back to Ordos.
Tomorrow was the last day of the internship. Whether it worked out or not, he had to give Huo Yang an answer.
Bai Tan suddenly remembered something and jumped up to pull out Huo Yang’s recent itinerary.
The screen was packed with dense notes; Huo Yang would have to split himself into eight pieces to handle everything until next week.
Tell him. He had to tell him tonight. Otherwise, once he left after tomorrow, there wouldn’t be enough time to find a temporary assistant to support Huo Yang’s work.
It was true he was leaving, but he had to stand his last watch properly.
Bai Tan grabbed his phone and checked the time.
Ten o’clock. He had to leave now, or he would disturb Huo Yang’s sleep.
Lanhai Hotel.
Huo Yang came out of the bathroom wiping his damp hair when he heard a knock at the door.
Opening the door, he saw Yang Yueqian standing there with a face full of smiles.
“Is something the matter?” he asked.
Yang Yueqian glanced into the room, confirming that the eyesore of a little assistant wasn’t there.
“I can’t sleep. I wanted to talk to Teacher Huo about the script. Is it convenient for you now?” Yang Yueqian said with a smile.
Huo Yang pondered for a moment, pulled down the towel he was using to dry his hair, tucked his bathrobe tighter, and stepped aside to let him in.
“Wait a moment.” He turned and went into the bathroom to change clothes.
Yang Yueqian sat on the sofa, carefully observing the bathroom door. After a while, he pulled a small packet out of his pocket, poured the white powder inside into a cup, and used a spoon to stir it vigorously until it was even.
Huo Yang came out, having changed into a shirt and trousers.
“What do you want to talk about?” Huo Yang asked lowly, his eyes downcast, not even looking at him.
“Well, it’s… no rush. Teacher Huo, have some water first.”
Huo Yang happened to be thirsty. He picked up the water cup casually and took a look.
Yang Yueqian stared fixedly at his face, his Adam’s apple sliding up and down uneasily.
What was he looking at? He shouldn’t have discovered anything.
Huo Yang swirled the water cup and brought it to his lips.
As his Adam’s apple rhythmically moved, Yang Yueqian secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Setting down the water cup, Huo Yang sat on the bed:
“Speak. What do you want to talk about?”
His tone was indifferent, devoid of any discernible emotion.
“Teacher Huo.” Yang Yueqian stood up, walked over slowly, and sat down right next to him.
Huo Yang moved several inches to the side, his brow furrowing involuntarily.
