Apparently, I’m a Poisonous Woman Who Sells One-Night Dreams, but I Ended Up Awakening a Hero’s Devoted Love - Chapter 2.14
Several nights after their conversation. Mariadoll and Jerf were meeting with Dennis at an inn in the city.
Though it was several grades above the inn where Aiden had stayed, it still felt rather shabby for royalty to be lodging there.
Showing Dennis the dream was to get closer to the truth behind Carnah’s death.
Since the truth clearly involved the possibility of assassination by another party, they had arranged to meet secretly at an inn in the royal capital rather than the castle.
Mariadoll and the others needed a proper reason to wander the capital, so Dennis had officially issued them a special permit under the pretext that “it would make for good memories for the soon-to-be-married couple.” Each member of the royal family seemed to have their own unique seal, and this one appeared to be Dennis’s emblem, though it was so complex it was impossible to tell what the motif was.
As for Dennis, it seemed he had secret passages he used for his incognito outings.
When the two arrived at the inn and gave their names, they were told the room location.
“What a hassle. So, what am I supposed to do?”
The time was one in the afternoon. Even with Dennis’s permission, going out at night was impossible.
The Cortaus side’s reasoning was that something might happen to an important figure from Dunbargas, but it was clearly to prevent any suspicious activities under cover of darkness.
Therefore, even though the sun was overhead, Dennis would have to sleep.
Mariadoll handed him a sleeping pill.
“Shall I have it tested for poison?”
“No need. I doubt the hero Jerf would try to poison me. If you were after my life, you’d come at me with a sword, wouldn’t you?”
“To add, we’ll do it somewhere untraceable. The innkeeper has seen our faces, so you can rest assured on that point.”
Mariadoll, caught between their intimidating smirks, broke out in a cold sweat, thinking, We made peace, didn’t we?
Deciding it was just an unfunny knight’s joke, she handed Dennis the medicine packet and water, which he took without suspicion.
“So, what happens after this?”
He asked this after already lying down in bed, having neglected to ask before drinking—quite the bold move.
“I will enter Your Highness Dennis’s dream and see the same memories. I can show you two memories. Once that’s over, my consciousness will leave Your Highness Dennis.”
“What happens to me? Do I wake up with you?”
“No, I believe you’ll likely wake around midnight. Most people say they continue dreaming of the past afterward, but they don’t seem to remember the details well.”
“In that case, when Mariadoll wakes up, please call out to the knight at the back-alley eatery. I’ve also reserved the room across the hall and instructed him to keep watch over this room if he receives orders from me. After that, enjoy exploring the capital together.”
It made sense. Sleeping soundly at an inn without guards would be dangerous.
He had lied, saying he had a secret meeting arranged with Jerf, and brought one knight along to wait outside the inn.
The reason he didn’t let the knight into the room was that seeing him in a deep sleep might make the knight wonder what had happened. Wondering was one thing, but if he mistakenly thought Dennis had been poisoned and collapsed, it could become a serious matter.
However, Mariadoll frowned uneasily at this offer.
“Actually, after showing the dream, I’ll be unwell for about two days. Once I wake up, Lord Jerf is supposed to carry me back to my room at the detached palace.”
“Unwell? My apologies. This is the first I’m hearing of this. Will you be all right?”
Dennis, who had been lying down, sat up in surprise and looked at Mariadoll with concern.
“I’ll run a slight fever, but I have good medicine, so there’s no need to worry. Besides, Lord Jerf will be with me.”
“I see. My apologies, Mariadoll. I’m sorry to put you through this, but I must know the truth.”
“Yes. I’m not sure how much I can help, but please leave it to me.”
At her words, Dennis nodded, and perhaps the sleeping pill was finally taking effect, as he began to blink drowsily.
As Dennis lay down again, Mariadoll pulled the blanket up to his shoulders. He closed his purple eyes, and soon the sound of regular breathing could be heard.
