- Chapter 6 - Rebirth in the Apocalypse
Hold on! It would be impolite to look any further.
Of course, Cheng Wei wasn’t perverted enough to expose himself in public, he had loosely wrapped a towel around his waist.
Bai Xun stuffed the clothes into his hands, pushed him, and slammed the bathroom door shut with a loud thud.
“Well, take your time washing up. I’ll go find some medicated oil for you.”
Covering his nose, he quickly ran downstairs. Although he was captivated by the sight, he had still noticed the bruises on Cheng Wei’s waist and abdomen, likely left from the fight with the snake.
Bai Xun rushed downstairs to rummage through the medicine cabinet, casually checking for any expired medications. After tossing the expired ones into the trash, he grabbed the medicated oil for bruises and returned to his room.
Since it would still be a while before Cheng Wei finished, Bai Xun finally had time to open the game panel and check the unlockable games.
Currently, he possessed 1 Crystal Cone, which could unlock four games: Pet Home, Kitchen Simulator, Sea Ark, and Renovation Master. Among them, Sea Ark and Renovation Master required specific unlock conditions (0/1) to be triggered.
As he still lacked sufficient information to determine exactly what would happen in the future, he decided not to unlock any games for now. It wouldn’t be too late to unlock them once he had more information.
After the Star Game System prompted the acquisition of Crystal Cone ×1, a small icon appeared in the upper right corner of the game panel, a transparent, diamond-shaped crystal cone, followed by the number 1.
Bai Xun clicked on it, and the Crystal Cone icon flashed, displaying a prompt: Crystal Cone, obtained with a 3.2% chance when killing mutated animals/plants/humans. Can be used to unlock games.
It sounded a bit like nonsense.
The only important piece of information was the 3.2% chance of obtaining a Crystal Cone. Treating the Crystal Cone as an SSR card, this probability was actually relatively high for a gacha game, roughly one Crystal Cone for every 31 monsters killed.
Now, all he lacked was clear information about the apocalypse.
Bai Xun closed the game panel, picked up his phone, and opened various social media apps to search for keywords related to the apocalypse. Only a handful of old jokes from previous years popped up.
Since the apocalypse keywords yielded no results, he changed his approach and searched for “heavy rain.”
This time, numerous related search results appeared. He scrolled through them one by one, finding that most discussions were similar, focusing on how the severe rain affected daily work and travel, with some debates about global warming.
Occasionally, there were fragmented comments expressing worries that this heavy rain might be the beginning of some ominous sign, but they were quickly buried under layers of playful replies.
Only one user named “Rebirth in the Apocalypse” persistently posted about heavy rain, supernatural abilities, animal mutations, and related topics, with their latest comment posted just three minutes ago.
Bai Xun’s intuition told him this was the same user whose apocalyptic post had been taken down with a 404 error the day before. Without hesitation, he clicked into the chat box and sent a private message to Rebirth in the Apocalypse: “Hello, I believe what you said about the apocalypse and animal mutations is true. Just 30 minutes ago, my family and I were attacked by a talking snake.”
Several minutes passed without a reply from Rebirth in the Apocalypse. Just then, the doorknob turned, and Cheng Wei entered the room after finishing his shower.
The clothes that had been loose on Bai Xun fit slightly snugly on Cheng Wei. The pullover hoodie had turned into a form-fitting style, accentuating his broad shoulders and narrow waist.
Bai Xun set down his phone, placing the medicated oil and hairdryer on the bedside table. “Rub this bruise oil firmly on the bruised areas, it helps promote blood circulation and reduce swelling. Make sure to dry your hair completely so you don’t catch a cold. I’ll go take a shower first, so wait for me to come back before we head downstairs together.”
Cheng Wei replied, “Alright.”
Reassured, Bai Xun gathered his clothes and headed to the bathroom to shower.
Just a few minutes later, Bai Yu sneaked up from the first floor and lightly knocked on her brother’s door. “Bro, it’s me. Open up.”
Cheng Wei opened the door, causing Bai Yu, who had been crouching, to miss her target. She straightened up with an awkward smile. “Sis-in-law, hello. My brother’s in the shower, right? Can I come in? While he’s away, let’s have a little chat.”
“Sure.”
Hearing the term “sis-in-law,” Cheng Wei raised an eyebrow slightly but silently accepted the title, stepping aside to let Bai Yu in.
So, my brother really did find himself a male sis-in-law behind my back! Hahaha!
She made herself right at home, climbing onto the bed and sitting cross-legged. In a flash, she pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds from her pocket, her expression excited and her tone full of gossip. “Sis-in-law, quick, quick, while my brother’s not here, tell me how you two met!”
Cheng Wei was enthusiastically handed a handful of spiced sunflower seeds by Bai Yu. This silly girl was a naive sweetheart, at this point, she’d probably believe anything he said, as her mind had already jumped to the conclusion that the two of them were definitely involved.
If Cheng Wei claimed he and Bai Xun had met at the summit of Mount Everest and embarked on an epic romance, her brain would accept it without a second thought. She wouldn’t even consider that her brother, that “white chicken,” could never climb Mount Everest. He’d probably be panting for oxygen at the base, only to be picked up by Cheng Wei on his way down.
Cheng Wei casually pocketed the handful of sunflower seeds. Amid the crisp sounds of Bai Yu cracking seeds, he began recounting their love story.
“We met in a game.”
Bai Xun had downloaded a virtual boyfriend game and created him.
“He confessed first. Even before we officially met, he took the time to learn about my interests, greeted me in places I frequented, and gave me gifts I liked. As we spent more time together, we created many unforgettable memories, and I slowly fell for him too. I still remember, he confessed to me on a cable car ride in the snowy mountains.”
A series of beautifully rendered game CG images formed Cheng Wei’s memories of their romance. Though for Bai Xun, it was just a matter of clicking the mouse and spending a few minutes reading through text and images, for Cheng Wei, it was an experience he had truly lived through.
“But he’s a bit shy, and his mom doesn’t know he’s gay yet, so could you keep this a secret for us? He asked me not to tell anyone.”
This part was pure fabrication.
Bai Yu gave him a look that said, “You can count on me!” and declared, “Leave this little matter to me! Don’t worry, sis-in-law, my lips are tighter than a sealed door!”
Oh my, my brother’s actually shy! Hahaha! With that petite frame of his, he’s definitely the bottom, right? Hahaha! I’ve already decided what doujinshi to draw tonight and what positions to use!
Bai Yu grinned with a mischievous gleam in her eyes, making Cheng Wei feel as though he had inadvertently opened Pandora’s box.
But it wasn’t a big problem. In fact, it was more beneficial than harmful for his secret pursuit of Bai Xun.
Meanwhile, Bai Xun finished his shower, casually draped a towel over his neck, and hummed a tune as he shuffled back to his room in slippers. He had no idea that, just a wall away, he had been betrayed by both of them.
The doorknob turned, and both people in the room immediately looked toward him.
The air seemed to freeze for an instant.
Two seconds later, an angry roar erupted: “Bai Yu, you’re eating sunflower seeds on my bed again!”
Bai Yu quickly gathered the sunflower seeds, ducked her head, and slipped under Bai Xun’s outstretched arm blocking the doorway, crouching low: “Brother, brother, I’m sorry! I promise it won’t happen again!”
Bai Xun grabbed her hood and pulled her back like lifting a chick: “You said the same thing last time! Hand them over!”
With tears in her eyes, Bai Yu obediently handed over all the sunflower seeds.
After squeezing out the last bit of value from his unfortunate sister, Bai Xun promptly kicked her out and closed the door, leaving only him and Cheng Wei in the room.
Cheng Wei was using a hairdryer to dry his tail. When standing, the tip of his large tail reached the ground, and the hot air lifted the fur at the roots, evaporating the moisture and making the fluffy tail look like a fluffy feather duster.
Bai Xun couldn’t resist and walked over to give it a quick stroke. The soft, dense, and warm fur felt like dandelion fluff, instantly swallowing his fingers without leaving a single gap.
“Sorry, I just couldn’t help it,” Bai Xun praised sincerely. “Your tail looks really nice to touch.”
Cheng Wei flicked the tip of his tail happily. “Thanks for the compliment.”
Bai Xun sat down beside him and picked up his phone. Suddenly, the towel on his head felt lighter, and before he could react, a warm breeze blew against the back of his head.
“I can do it myself!” He quickly put down his phone and reached for the hairdryer in Cheng Wei’s hand. Helping someone dry their hair felt too intimate for their current relationship.
Cheng Wei obediently handed over the hairdryer and began adjusting the hole in his pants for his tail. The cut opening was a bit tight, pinching the fur and making the base of his tail uncomfortable.
Bai Xun casually started a conversation. “What did my sister come in for earlier?”
Cheng Wei didn’t look up. “She came in to guess if I’m your boyfriend.”
Bai Xun’s hand trembled, nearly hitting his forehead with the hairdryer. “And what did you say?”
Cheng Wei put down his tail and looked into his eyes. “I lied.”
That was the truth.
Bai Xun was momentarily overwhelmed by those clear eyes, instinctively assuming that Cheng Wei’s lie meant denying his previous actions in the game and pretending they were friends who met in real life.
Instantly, his fondness for Cheng Wei grew a little more.
Making such an innocent snow leopard lie for him was truly asking too much.
Bai Xun thought this to himself, unaware that he was the one being played for a fool, helping someone count the red bills while being sold out, and even exclaiming naively and foolishly, “So much money!”
“Thank you for keeping it a secret for me,” he said sincerely.
“You’re welcome,” Cheng Wei replied, his eyes slightly narrowed as he smiled.
Bai Xun opened his phone. The private message he had sent to “Rebirth in the Apocalypse” before going to shower had received a reply. The other party didn’t say anything extra, only sending a document.
The document wasn’t large, only five pages long. It was categorized by headings, listing precautions for the apocalypse, as well as the natural disasters and mutated monsters they would encounter.
The only downside was that the information wasn’t comprehensive.
At the very beginning of “Rebirth in the Apocalypse,” it was written: “I hope this document can help everyone avoid the risks of the early apocalypse as much as possible and survive through the long days of the end times. However, the information I can provide is limited. Before being reborn, I only survived in the apocalypse for one year…”
Bai Xun exited the document and solemnly sent a message to Rebirth in the Apocalypse: “Thank you.”
Rebirth in the Apocalypse replied immediately: “I wish you and your family can survive.”
Bai Xun sent back a grateful emoji and switched back to continue reading the document.
Cheng Wei, having finished with his tail, leaned over to take a look. As if paying for access, he first stuffed one of his tails into Bai Xun’s arms.
Bai Xun should have pushed the tail away and said righteously, “Man, don’t you dare try to seduce me!”
But the tail was so soft and so nice to touch! As everyone knows, a cat and its tail are two different creatures, so just touching the tail shouldn’t count as breaking the rules, right?
So, he shamelessly hugged Cheng Wei’s tail and handed over half of his phone screen.
Bai Xun skimmed through the information in the document, reading ten lines at a glance and scanning it roughly from start to finish.
The more he read the cold, black text, the more alarmed he became.
After finishing the last line, Bai Xun’s heart sank completely.
