Among Three People Walking, There Must Be One Straight Girl - Chapter 7
Xia Wan had gone to attend a third-marriage banquet for a distant relative on behalf of her parents. After being interrogated by a swarm of relatives about university, future plans, and major life milestones, she drifted back to her front door with her soul practically having left her body.
The door in front of her looked like a black hole, staring at her in the darkness.
A sense of eeriness crept into her heart. Xia Wan glanced at her chat history with Lan Ranxing.
Xia Wan: “You and Yuyue didn’t start a fight, did you?”
Lan Ranxing: “No.”
Xia Wan: “Really?”
Lan Ranxing: “Mm.”
Then she opened her chat history with Lan Yuyue.
Xia Wan: “Are you guys doing okay?”
Lan Yuyue: “Great. She’s very cute.”
Xia Wan: “…”
Xia Wan: “Don’t play around too much.”
Lan Yuyue: “We’re getting along perfectly. We’re in the middle of peaceful coexistence.”
Xia Wan comforted herself, patting her chest repeatedly and whispering: “They can’t both be liars!”
She pushed open the door.
Well, no fighting—it was very quiet. Well, peaceful coexistence—it was very harmonious. Well—why the hell had they peacefully partitioned her home!
In the living room, a Chu-Han Border line split the space in two.
Lan Ranxing had claimed a dining table plus three chairs, a small sofa, and a rocking chair. Lan Yuyue had won three chairs, the long sofa plus the coffee table, and a beanbag chair.
As for the decorations, throw pillows, plushies, snacks, and even the wall clock and display paintings, they had all been taken down and scattered around their respective sides.
Lan Yuyue was lying enchantingly on her side playing with her phone, glancing at Lan Ranxing from time to time. Whenever their gazes met, a faint spark of electricity and lightning seemed to crackle and pop in the air.
With a “Hmph,” both went back to looking down at their phones.
Lan Ranxing kept her head down, using her phone to hide her face, moving it just a tiny bit to peek at Lan Yuyue’s half-exposed fragrant shoulder. Her long hair was scattered, obscuring her collarbone and giving glimpses of her fair skin.
Although Lan Ranxing had admitted to the face-slapping incident that morning, the sensation in the dream was far too real. Her gaze toward Lan Yuyue grew increasingly direct. She wished she could press her face right up to her to see if there was a mark on the collarbone.
“Ahem, ahem!” Xia Wan coughed heavily. Before either of them noticed, she was already standing on the Chu-Han Border. She pointed a finger at each of them and praised: “You two are really something else!”
Ding-dong, ding-dong.
The two exchanged a glance, raised their proud heads, gave each other a sneer, and then dashed toward the door like streaks of lightning. Crowding each other to open the door, they spoke in unison: “Whose delivery is it!”
The delivery man outside froze: “Ladies, it’s for a Ms. Lan.”
Lan Ranxing and Lan Yuyue glared at each other, waiting for the delivery man to hand over the food.
The delivery man held the bags, looking at the receipt, but his eyes kept drifting toward the two girls. Two seemingly weak young girls, especially the long-haired one who was even more…
“What are you looking at!” Lan Ranxing stepped in front of Lan Yuyue. “Don’t look at what you shouldn’t, watch your eyes.”
As she spoke, she snatched the delivery and pushed Lan Yuyue toward the apartment. Suddenly, a salty pig hand reached out and rested on Lan Ranxing’s shoulder.
“Little girl, don’t have such a big temper. Big brother…”
The delivery man let out an “Ah—!” as he looked incredulously at the hand that had heavily struck his abdomen. It looked thin and weak, yet it almost knocked the dinner out of him.
Before the delivery man could react, Lan Ranxing delivered a front whip kick that sent him flying against the wall, where he slowly slid down.
The delivery man wailed repeatedly, his hands unsure whether to cover his stomach or touch his back first. Seeing Lan Ranxing approaching him, he hurriedly begged for mercy: “Big sister, I was wrong! I was really wrong!”
“Huh? Calling me big sister?!” Lan Ranxing grabbed the delivery man’s collar and spat: “Speak! How many times have you done something like this!”
Hearing the commotion, Xia Wan drifted over and leaned on Lan Yuyue’s shoulder: “Now you know why I warned you not to play with fire.”
Lan Yuyue looked at the two delivery bags suddenly stuffed into her hands, then at the excitement outside. Seeing Lan Ranxing raise her foot, she spoke up to stop her: “Wait a moment!”
Delivery man: Is she a savior?!
Lan Ranxing stared at Lan Yuyue. She hated Holy Mothers most of all. Didn’t this Lan Yuyue know how disgusting the look this scumbag gave her was?
Lan Yuyue unhurriedly crouched at Lan Ranxing’s feet, touching Lan Ranxing’s foot. She pulled out a wet wipe from somewhere, slowly wiped the area, and then dried it with a tissue: “How can you dirty your feet for someone like this.”
As she spoke, Lan Yuyue put Lan Ranxing’s shoe back on, adjusting it to the most comfortable angle: “This way, it doesn’t hurt your foot, it doesn’t dirty your foot, and it’s more efficient.”
Lan Ranxing looked down at her heavy-soled Martin boots—completely at odds with her usual style—and watched as the half-crouching Lan Yuyue slowly stood up and smiled at her. Moving silently back to the doorway, Lan Ranxing felt a momentary daze.
This Lan Yuyue isn’t here to mediate?! She’s an assist?
Before she could think more, sensing the delivery man’s intent to flee, Lan Ranxing stepped on his abdomen, filling the hallway with wails.
There were four units per floor with two elevators. One neighbor, an older auntie, opened her door to check and shouted at the sight of Lan Ranxing’s actions: “Oh my, what are you doing!”
Before Xia Wan could step forward to clean up the mess, Lan Yuyue’s face was covered in tear tracks. She cautiously pulled on Lan Ranxing’s clothes, sobbing incoherently: “Xingxing, don’t do something stupid for my sake. This delivery man wanted to take liberties with me. At most, just let him touch me a few times, maybe he would have let us go then. You absolutely mustn’t do anything reckless.”
Lan Yuyue seemed to be gasping for breath from crying so hard. Xia Wan hurriedly patted Lan Yuyue’s back: “Don’t be upset, don’t be upset, it’s okay, it’s okay. Your health has always been poor, you can’t get agitated.”
Seeing this, the auntie didn’t come forward to stop them anymore. She ran back to call for help.
The auntie’s family rushed over. A single sentence from her younger daughter reignited public anger: “It’s him! Last time I went to get my delivery, he intentionally touched my hand!”
Once the delivery man’s photo was posted in the building’s owners’ group, numerous voices chimed in.
After returning from the police station, Xia Wan didn’t know whether to sit on Lan Yuyue’s side or Lan Ranxing’s side, so she simply sat on the floor.
Xia Wan said: “Alright, Ranxing did a great job tonight, but don’t be so impulsive next time. What if he had a knife or something? It’s dangerous.”
Lan Ranxing sat in the rocking chair. Thinking of that scumbag, her fists tightened again.
That man hadn’t just used verbal harassment and physical advances. He also used the delivery platform for various types of harassment and threats. The most hateful part was that he would only be locked up for a few days before being released.
“I really regret not kicking him to death.”
Xia Wan scolded: “Hey, hey! You’d be killing a thousand enemies but losing eight hundred of your own, what’s the benefit in that!”
“How can Wanwan say that about Xingxing? Xingxing was super amazing.” Lan Yuyue, who was sitting on her own territory, walked over and crouched beside Lan Ranxing. Resting her elbows on her knees and cradling her face in her palms, her eyes sparkled: “Our Xingxing was super amazing. Xingxing saved me today. If it weren’t for Xingxing, I can’t imagine what today would have been like. Thank you, Xingxing.”
A soft, boneless hand took Lan Ranxing’s hand and placed it against Lan Yuyue’s cheek. The face, slightly chilled from the fan, pressed tightly against the back of Lan Ranxing’s hand.
Fluttering eyelashes, a grateful gaze, eyes filled with moisture, a smiling mouth, and sincere words of thanks.
A part of Lan Ranxing’s heart was moved. This was the first time she had stepped in to help someone and received such direct praise.
Usually, she would hear: “You shouldn’t,” “You shouldn’t have,” “You should,” “You’re wrong to do this,” “There was no need for that.”
Now, what she heard was sincere praise and validation for what she had done.
Lan Ranxing sat up straight, feeling a bit lost. She didn’t know what to say. Seeing the plushie on Lan Yuyue’s sofa, she said: “If you want to thank me, give me that plushie.”
Instantly, the warmth on Lan Ranxing’s hand vanished. Lan Yuyue stood up and returned to the sofa, hugging the plushie: “That won’t do. One thing is one thing, I won this myself!”
Lan Ranxing wasn’t having it: “You talk so sweetly, but you have no sincerity at all.”
The words really were sweet; every word and every sentence hit right in Lan Ranxing’s heart. She didn’t dare show it, fearing she’d be mocked or called overconfident.
Lan Ranxing turned her face away: “I won’t help you next time.”
She would still help.
Xia Wan was tired. She had tossed and turned until one or two in the morning last night, been tortured by relatives during the day, and dealt with this heart-wrenching mess tonight. Now the house was still a mess, and these two culprits seemed to feel nothing.
Xia Wan sighed, cleared her throat, and stood up with a smile, looking around: “Will one of you explain to me why MY house has been ‘renovated’ into I-don’t-know-what-the-hell-kind-of-state without the owner knowing!”
“Blame her!”
“Blame her!”
The two spoke in unison, pointing at each other.
Xia Wan chose Lan Ranxing to answer. Compared to Lan Yuyue, Lan Ranxing didn’t beat around the bush.
“You speak.”
Lan Ranxing, having been called upon, kept it short: “She snatched my sofa, I snatched her rocking chair, and that’s how it ended up…”
As she said.
Xia Wan turned to Lan Yuyue, gesturing for her to speak.
Lan Yuyue: “I think Xingxing said it very well.”
Half an hour later, Xia Wan massaged her aching hands. Sitting on the coffee table, she admired the two of them, whom she had pulled into the room to repair individually, and left them with one sentence: “I’ll let you off the hook today. When I wake up tomorrow morning, I hope my house is still my house.”
In the middle of the night, Lan Ranxing and Lan Yuyue sat in their respective exclusive seats.
Ten minutes passed. Half an hour passed.
They remained motionless until someone finally let out a yawn, and the other followed suit.
The moment their eyes met, they rushed toward the bedroom. The two squeezed at the bedroom door, neither willing to let the other enter first.
Lan Yuyue quietly moved her foot forward a step. Lan Ranxing’s leg instantly entwined around hers.
“Let me go!” Lan Yuyue’s leg was immobilized. Taking advantage of the gap while Lan Ranxing was talking, her hand moved to Lan Ranxing’s waist, her fingertips tracing and lightly touching back and forth.
Lan Ranxing stiffened for a moment. Her hands waved frantically but couldn’t block Lan Yuyue’s attack. Her body twisted, and in a momentary lapse of attention, she let Lan Yuyue slip inside: “How can you cheat!”
Lan Yuyue lay peacefully on the bed, covering herself with the quilt in satisfaction.
Yesterday, she had been the one lying on the inside, squeezed motionless by Lan Ranxing and even having her harassed by that bad seed.
Now she had stood up! If Lan Ranxing tried to touch her tonight, she could run immediately.
The bed beside her sank as Lan Ranxing crawled in from the foot of the bed. Lan Ranxing’s other side was the wall.
Lan Ranxing wrapped herself tight in her quilt, revealing a pair of innocent eyes: “I’ve already apologized, so you can’t hit my face~”
