- Among Three People Walking, There Must Be One Straight Girl
- Chapter 4 - Living Together
Twelve o’clock midnight. On the TV, an immortal cultivation drama played out with clashing swords and life-or-death struggles.
Lan Ranxing moved a small stool and sat squatting on it, her eyes fixed deathly on the bathroom.
With a click, the frosted glass door was pushed open. Out of the hazy mist slowly stepped a person, her thin frame unable to fill out the oversized pajamas.
The pajamas were very thin; a certain protrusion on her chest was particularly eye-catching. Lan Ranxing hurriedly covered her eyes and scolded: “Why aren’t you wearing a bra!”
Lan Yuyue looked down, a smile instantly spreading across her face. She walked grandly over to Lan Ranxing, leaned down, and pulled away the hand covering Lan Ranxing’s eyes: “But you only gave me pajamas~”
When Lan Yuyue said she wanted to shower, Xia Wan suggested wearing her pajamas, but Lan Ranxing naturally refused.
Lan Yuyue was stealing her friendship and her childhood friend’s home. Now she even wanted to steal Xia Wan’s clothes. Lan Ranxing had waved her hand grandly and painfully sacrificed her own pajamas. Her childhood friend must not be defiled by this wicked woman Lan Yuyue!
Lan Ranxing kept her eyes tightly shut. A damp, soft hand slowly moved her own hand away. She thought to herself, How come Lan Yuyue’s hands aren’t as icy as a ghost’s now?
A drop of water traveled from Lan Yuyue’s hand to Lan Ranxing’s, sliding down bit by bit—itchy and cool.
Lan Ranxing hurriedly broke free: “You! You…”
Before her eyes, the pajamas were loose and the collar sagged, leaving the fair torso fully visible. The only cover was the pink pair of panties Lan Ranxing had left there unused, barely covering the triangular area.
Lan Ranxing’s Adam’s apple bobbed as she swallowed hard. She wanted to close her eyes, but her brain involuntarily started making comparisons: not big, but…
The soft laughter in front of her pulled her thoughts back. Lan Ranxing’s face flushed red in an instant, and she snapped in humiliated rage: “You pervert!”
She instinctively backed away, leaving the small stool. Her body leaned back as weightlessness hit her.
Lan Yuyue reached out to her, grabbing her arm, but was pulled down to fall with her.
The casually tied hair-drying cap fell off, and Lan Yuyue’s wet hair scattered, brushing against Lan Ranxing’s face. Her slender body pressed halfway onto Lan Ranxing.
She wasn’t as heavy as Lan Ranxing had imagined. Her hands supported Lan Yuyue’s waist, and only then did she notice that Lan Yuyue was propping herself up with her hands, her legs straddling Lan Ranxing’s sides, with only her buttocks and upper thighs in contact. It was strange and intimate.
Xia Wan, who had just finished her shower, rushed over upon hearing the noise. Her best friend was currently mounted on top of her childhood friend—was this something she was allowed to see?
Xia Wan’s brain stalled. She tilted her head and tapped her skull: “What’s going on? Did I get water in my brain from the shower?”
Burning all over and redder than a prawn fresh out of a hot pot, Lan Ranxing propped herself up with her arms and scurried away. The moment she broke free from under Lan Yuyue, she scrambled to her feet and shouted: “I’m going to shower!”
She rushed into the bathroom and slammed the door shut.
Her body leaned against the back of the door and slowly slid down. As soon as she closed her eyes, she saw Lan Yuyue’s body. In her ears was Lan Yuyue’s mocking laughter.
She cursed under her breath: “That damn woman, she actually tried to se… seduce me. Don’t think I’ll give up! I will never let you steal Xia Wan away!”
Lan Ranxing shook her head, finally managing to shake Lan Yuyue out of her mind, when the sound of the two talking drifted in from outside.
She pressed her ear to the door. In her dazed state, she seemed to hear her name being mentioned.
Lan Ranxing carefully moved the door handle. After a slight click, the door opened, revealing a crack.
Lan Yuyue was lying on the floor where Lan Ranxing had just been, her hair spread out.
Beside her, Xia Wan pulled at Lan Yuyue: “Are you feeling better? Can you get up yet?”
Lan Yuyue waved her hand: “My chest still hurts a bit, let me rest for a while.”
Lan Ranxing’s hand on the door handle trembled. Is Lan Yuyue really sick? She isn’t faking it? Then didn’t I wrong her?
Lan Ranxing bit her lip and let out a long sigh, her mind already beginning to organize words for an apology.
Xia Wan sat down and poked Lan Yuyue’s head: “If you’re not feeling well, why do you have to tease Ranxing? You’re just looking for trouble. Don’t play around until you lose your life.”
Lan Yuyue let Xia Wan poke her: “But she looks so cute when she’s angry. Pouting, with that round face… she’s very cute, don’t you think?”
Xia Wan rolled her eyes. This best friend of hers loved teasing people most when she was in a bad mood; this bad habit was truly hard to describe.
Behind the door, Lan Ranxing suddenly swung the door open. Two gazes instantly converged on her. Lan Ranxing lowered her head and coughed twice: “I forgot to take my clothes.”
She rushed into the guest room again, slammed the door, and threw herself onto the bed.
Her legs clamped onto the quilt, and a muffled giggle came from where her face was buried in the blankets. Then, she rolled around hugging the quilt.
She whispered: “Ahhh, she called me cute! Cute~”
Since hitting 170cm back in middle school, the thing Lan Ranxing wanted to hear most was someone calling her cute. But everyone around her automatically avoided the word “cute” when praising her, as if that word was toxic.
She had tried buying cuter clothes before, but paired with her cold face when she wasn’t smiling, she didn’t look like she was buying clothes; she looked like she was there to wreck the shop.
After rolling around a few times, she remembered Lan Yuyue had done it on purpose—teasing her intentionally. She sat up abruptly and punched the quilt.
“For the sake of you calling me cute, I’ll forgive your ‘on purpose’ this once.”
Opening the door, a dazzling scene greeted her. She rushed between the two and snatched the hairdryer out of Xia Wan’s hand. No, my childhood friend cannot blow Lan Yuyue’s hair.
“I’ll do it!”
The hair was already half-dry. It was Lan Ranxing’s first time drying someone else’s hair. Imitating the way she dried her own, her fingers threaded through Lan Yuyue’s hair, shaking it.
Lan Yuyue’s hair was fine and soft, like supple silk wrapping around Lan Ranxing’s hand.
Her fingers slid down the dark strands, reaching the ends effortlessly as the hairdryer followed the path, drying section after section.
Lan Ranxing dried very carefully, lingering a bit longer at the scalp and moving the hairdryer further away at other times.
After finishing the back, she started on the sides and stole a glance at Lan Yuyue.
Lan Yuyue’s face was small and exquisite. Her eyes were closed, but her eyelashes still curled slightly. Her faint willow-leaf brows and slightly upturned nose actually made Lan Ranxing think she was a bit cute. Her lips were a bit dry, a pale shade of pink.
Lan Ranxing had the strange illusion that she was drying a doll’s hair.
Suddenly, Lan Yuyue opened her eyes and looked at her.
Her eyes were very large. Lan Ranxing didn’t know how to describe those eyes—they weren’t aggressive. They were the kind that made people feel very comfortable at first glance, making them want to get closer.
The corners of Lan Yuyue’s mouth curled up slightly: “Has the little childhood friend fallen for me? You’re looking so intently.”
An obedient doll would never say such words.
Lan Ranxing stuffed the hairdryer back into Lan Yuyue’s hand: “If you have the strength, dry it yourself. Don’t ruin my Xia Wan.”
Having said that, she stomped off to wash up.
The heavy sound of the door closing vented her dissatisfaction.
Behind the door, Lan Ranxing kicked the trash can in annoyance.
“Dammit, this person—how is her mouth even more wicked than mine? I was actually going to apologize. Forget it, I dried her hair, so consider the apology done. Hmph, what an excessive woman.”
The sound of splashing water came from the shower. Xia Wan, having finished drying her hair, walked slowly out of the bedroom: “She finished drying it for you?”
“She got scared away by me halfway through.” Saying that, Lan Yuyue took the hairdryer and continued. She wasn’t picky, once her scalp was dry, she tossed the hairdryer aside.
“Am I really sleeping with your little childhood friend tonight?” Lan Yuyue sat on the sofa, legs crossed, flipping through chat messages. She scrolled quickly through hundreds of messages, replying casually.
Xia Wan looked at the shower room, then at her best friend.
Xia Wan said teasingly: “She already agreed, what can I say? You two can play and mess around, but don’t actually make her angry. If she truly gets mad, even several oxen couldn’t pull her back.”
Xia Wan knew Lan Ranxing’s temperament better than anyone. Given Lan Yuyue’s various intentional provocations today, Lan Ranxing was already showing restraint—perhaps for Xia Wan’s sake.
Lan Ranxing was angry at her parents, but not because they were having a second child; she was angry because they didn’t care about her feelings at all. They only told her after three months when the pregnancy was stable, as if she truly wouldn’t welcome the child.
As for Lan Yuyue, Xia Wan guessed Lan Ranxing’s point of anger was that their two-person friendship had been intruded upon. She didn’t like it. Through the screen before, Lan Ranxing had said she didn’t like it, but she wouldn’t do anything. This time she was quite well-behaved too—only using her mouth and not actually getting physical, which was great. With anyone else, Lan Ranxing might have already thrown a punch.
Lan Yuyue finished replying to her messages and tossed her phone aside: “Don’t worry, I know when to stop.”
Xia Wan took two cans of Coke from the fridge. With a pop and a hiss, the gas in the cans scrambled to escape.
The two naturally clinked cans.
The cold liquid went down, driving away the summer restlessness.
“The old man was being abusive again.”
“That stupid woman still doesn’t want a divorce. I don’t know what she’s thinking.”
“Lan Jinxi is taking the college entrance exam this year, he can support himself. I don’t understand what she’s after. Does she want the old man to never come home, or does she want him to never shower?”
Lan Yuyue’s family was comparable to a female lead in a melodramatic novel. The only person who could comfort Lan Yuyue at home was her stepmother—a standard tragic novel female lead. Husband was abusive and had a mistress; daughter was rebellious and disobedient.
Xia Wan listened quietly. None of this was enough to make Lan Yuyue suddenly run to her to clear her head in a fit of rage.
Lan Yuyue slammed her Sprite finished and let out a burp: “I hope your little childhood friend is a bit more durable.”
Xia Wan guessed and guessed, but couldn’t think of anything else that could make Lan Yuyue even angrier.
Xia Wan lay in bed, comforting herself: Lan Ranxing is in a bad mood, but her attention is easily diverted. If Lan Yuyue teases her, Lan Ranxing won’t get stuck in a dead end. Lan Yuyue knows her limits and won’t go overboard. Great, the two of them form a perfect closed loop. I just need to keep an eye on the big picture. I’m so smart!
In the pitch-black bedroom, Lan Yuyue threw off Lan Ranxing’s arm for the umpteenth time.
She recalled Xia Wan’s teasing expression—Xia Wan had known all along that Lan Ranxing was a messy sleeper and yet didn’t even warn her.
They were supposed to each have their own air-conditioned quilt, but now Lan Ranxing’s quilt was on the floor and she had squeezed into Lan Yuyue’s.
One hand draped over her waist. Throw it off, it comes back. Throw it off, it comes back.
Lan Yuyue, a light sleeper, had had enough.
Suddenly, a heavy leg pressed down on her lower abdomen.
Lan Yuyue’s chest rose and fell as she stared at Lan Ranxing, who was sleeping like a pig, gritting her teeth.
Today, she had still been far too polite to her.
