- Chapter 72 - Throws the Engagement Ring
Huo Zhenzhou’s eyes darkened.
He knew he had hurt Li Su deeply.
But…
He couldn’t help it.
Those beautiful memories with Li Su were like powdered sugar to him, sweet and irresistible.
Huo Xuanye slowly loosened his grip. “Brother, it’s all in the past. You’re being pathetic.”
The moment he let go, Huo Zhenzhou slammed Huo Xuanye onto the ground.
Huo Zhenzhou roared like a madman, “If our roles were reversed, do you think you’d be any nobler than me? Would you forget her and bless us? You couldn’t do it either, so why demand it of me?”
Huo Xuanye turned his head and saw a pair of feet entering the room.
His gaze traveled up the long legs, and his expression instantly turned pitiful. “Wife~”
Li Su rushed over. “Huo Zhenzhou, what are you doing? He’s your brother!”
Huo Zhenzhou stood up, straightening his tie. “Susu, he hit me too.”
“Wife, I’m fine. Wife, don’t be angry.” Huo Xuanye got up and took Li Su’s hand. “Ever since Brother regained his memories, he’s been jealous of me. Letting him hit me a few times helps him vent.”
Huo Zhenzhou shot Huo Xuanye a disbelieving look. “Susu, don’t listen to his manipulative words, he threw the first punch!”
“I don’t care who started it. Huo Zhenzhou, do you think wearing an engagement ring means we can go back to how things were before?”
Huo Zhenzhou touched the ring, sorrow flickering in his eyes.
Li Su’s gaze was resolute. “Impossible! The day you brought Zhou Motang back, it was over between us!”
“Susu-”
“I’m sorry. I failed you.”
Their eyes locked.
Seeing this, Huo Xuanye swiftly inserted himself between them. “Wife, it hurts~”
“Let’s go. Out.”
Li Su turned and walked away.
Huo Xuanye immediately followed.
Once outside, they spotted their parents, who hadn’t managed to flee in time.
With all the earlier commotion, it would’ve been hard not to notice.
Li Su returned to her room and began rummaging through her things.
Soon, she found an engagement ring.
She held it in her hand, back when Huo Zhenzhou had gone missing, she used to caress this ring often.
Clutching the ring, she stepped out.
Huo Zhenzhou had wrinkled his shirt earlier, so he had changed into a new one.
Hearing footsteps outside, he turned and saw Li Su returning.
Though her face showed no emotion, Huo Zhenzhou still smiled. “Susu~”
Li Su raised her hand and hurled the ring at him.
It rolled across the floor, coming to rest beside the shattered vase.
“Here’s your engagement ring.”
Her voice was icy. “Huo Zhenzhou, don’t hurt him again. Whether he took advantage of the situation or not, marrying him was my own decision.”
Huo Zhenzhou crouched down, ignoring the sharp shards of the vase, and picked up the ring. His slender, pale fingers were cut, blood instantly welling up.
He held the ring. “You designed this yourself. You loved it. Do you really not want it anymore?”
“I used to love you too. If I can let go of you, why would I cling to a lifeless object?”
With that, Li Su turned and left.
Huo Xuanye hadn’t changed yet, his clothes were still wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He leaned against the wall, looking utterly dejected.
Li Su walked over to him.
Then threw herself into his arms.
Huo Xuanye held her tightly. “I was really scared earlier.”
Li Su breathed in his scent. “Scared of what?”
Huo Xuanye’s voice was low and hoarse, “I’m afraid you’ll regret it, that you’ll divorce me and get back together with him.”
He had no confidence in himself.
Huo Zhenzhou walked out of the room and saw the two of them locked in an intimate embrace.
Meanwhile, he stood to the side, holding the engagement ring that Li Su had thrown away, blood dripping from his fingertips onto the floor, lonely and pitiful.
Li Su said softly, “Then you better behave and treat me well, or else I’ll go find someone else~”
Huo Xuanye wasn’t fooled. “Sometimes I listen to you, and sometimes you listen to me!”
Li Su understood, this bastard was talking about obeying him in bed when it came to changing positions.
Even at a time like this, Huo Xuanye still had the mood to make dirty jokes.
Noticing Huo Zhenzhou at the door, Huo Xuanye flashed a triumphant smile in his eyes, then swept Li Su up into his arms and strode away.
If his brother hadn’t had that accident, he would never have developed feelings for Li Su.
It was just that his brother and Li Su had too shallow a fate.
Huo Zhenzhou felt as if a knife were twisting in his heart, the pain unbearable.
After a long while, Huo Xuanye and Li Su finally came downstairs.
Huo Bowen and Xiao Qiyu sat on the sofa, their faces full of worry.
The old master and his wife had gone abroad for a vacation a couple of days earlier.
They, too, felt it was best to stay out of the family drama.
How enviable, to be able to leave.
But they didn’t dare.
If they left, who knew what would happen in this house?
It felt like the brothers might come to blows.
Now that they’d finally fought today, they actually felt a strange sense of relief.
Huo Xuanye spoke first. “Mom, Dad, Susu misses her parents. We’re going to stay at the Li family’s place for a while.”
“Oh, sure,” Xiao Qiyu agreed readily. “Susu can stay as long as she likes.”
Some distance might be good.
They had just returned from their vacation, stayed one night, and now they were off to the Li family home.
Running away was also a way to solve problems.
Only after they left did Huo Zhenzhou come downstairs.
Xiao Qiyu immediately noticed the band-aid on his finger.
“A-Zhou!” Huo Bowen’s face darkened. “Come here. Your mother and I want to talk to you.”
Huo Zhenzhou walked over like a lifeless shell.
He slumped onto the couch listlessly. “Dad. Mom.”
“We already know what happened this morning. What’s in the past can’t be changed. Even if you’ve regained your memories now, even if you know you once loved her deeply and still do, she’s your sister-in-law now.”
Huo Bowen’s heart ached seeing his son so distraught.
“Our family has been through a lot this year, especially you and Susu. After she married into our family, she suffered that accident, for a dancer, that was a fatal blow.”
“You’ve always been a rational and composed person. Your mother and I both believe you won’t be trapped by the past. Love is a matter between two people. She’s moved on now; her path with you has diverged.”
“There are plenty of wonderful women in this world. With your qualities, you can still spend the rest of your life with someone else.”
“Your mother and I hope both you and A’Ye can find happiness, not get tangled up in this mess. It does neither of you any good. Especially when it comes to love, you have to respect the woman’s choice. Clearly, Li Su has already let you go.”
The couple worked in perfect sync, lecturing Huo Zhenzhou with their well-rehearsed wisdom.
Huo Zhenzhou was in deep agony. “Mom, Dad, it’s all my fault, all my fault! I shouldn’t have fallen into the sea, shouldn’t have lost my memory, shouldn’t have agreed to marry Zhou Motang as her grandfather wished, and shouldn’t have hurt Li Su.”
“I want to make amends, I want to fix things, I want her to be okay. I wish time could just turn back-”
Huo Bowen frowned. “Huo Zhenzhou, calm down. There’s no time machine in this world, nor any medicine for regret.”
“Once something is missed, it’s missed. Don’t you understand such a simple truth?”
