- Chapter 63 - The Criminal Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
When Li Su woke up, Huo Xuanye was leaning against the headboard, scrolling through his tablet.
Because she had been recovering from her injuries recently, Huo Xuanye had rarely gone to the office.
Waking up to see him every day had already become a habit.
Li Su naturally wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled closer to him.
Huo Xuanye held her in return. “Wife, can you give me this?”
Li Su glanced at the screen, it was filled with men’s ties, and they were from the same brand as the one she had given Huo Zhunzhou.
Li Su smiled sweetly. “You did well just now. I’ll give you two.”
If his brother had one, he wanted one too.
And he even got two!
Smug~
His wife even praised him for his performance.
Huo Xuanye kissed Li Su, who had just woken up.
Li Su pressed her palm against his lips. “No more kisses, or you’ll get worked up again.”
She didn’t have the energy for it.
She was exhausted.
“I won’t tease you.”
Liar.
After returning home, Di Fei’er spent all day with Li Su, accompanying her through rehabilitation and practicing simple dance moves together. The two quickly became close friends despite their age difference.
December 2nd.
A very important day.
Today, the court would deliver its verdict on Zhou Zhanpeng’s crimes.
Li Su wanted to be there in person.
She wanted to see the person who had hurt her pay the price with her own eyes.
When Li Su and Huo Xuanye arrived at the courthouse, they found Huo Zhenzhou was also there.
The two brothers, dressed in tailored suits, wore ties from the same brand, both gifts from Li Su. With similar features but contrasting temperaments, their eyes met as they seized each other up.
Huo Xuanye pushed the wheelchair and said, “Brother, look at the new tie my wife gave me. Handsome, isn’t it?”
Huo Zhenzhou nodded in agreement. “Very handsome. Susu has always had excellent taste.”
Huo Xuanye seized the moment. “Of course my wife has good taste, otherwise, why would she have chosen me as her husband?”
A faint smile flickered in Huo Zhenzhou’s cool gaze. “Didn’t she choose you because you look like me? Ever heard of ‘a substitute for the beloved’?”
Huo Xuanye was about to lose it!!!
That stung.
How had he never noticed how sharp-tongued his brother could be?
“A substitute is fine by me~” Huo Xuanye smirked. “At least I have a wife.”
Even though she was sitting in a wheelchair, Li Su could easily imagine Huo Xuanye’s smug little expression right now.
You two are such children!
Li Su spoke up. “Let’s go inside first.”
The brothers listened to her and entered together.
Huo Xuanye and Huo Zhenzhou sat on either side of Li Su.
When Li Chen arrived, he naturally took a seat behind them.
He had heard that Huo Zhenzhou had regained his memory, and the moment he did, he wanted to sit next to his sister?
How shameless!
Though Li Su was seated between them, she leaned slightly toward Huo Xuanye.
Having Huo Zhenzhou suddenly beside her felt a bit awkward.
The courtroom was a solemn place, so they refrained from the bickering they had indulged in outside. That was progress enough.
Zhou Zhanpeng was brought in by two police officers. He limped, his hand wrapped in bandages, his face swollen, and his frame noticeably thinner.
He looked utterly drained of vitality.
Zhou Zhanpeng’s trembling gaze swept across the courtroom until it landed on Li Su, and the Huo brothers flanking her.
Two months ago, Zhou Motang had visited him once.
She had pointed at his nose and cursed him for ruining her life.
For making her get divorced.
It seemed she really had divorced.
Not only that, but Zhou Motang hadn’t even shown up today.
Zhou Zhanpeng’s heart was as dead as ashes. In the detention center, no matter what he did, it displeased his fellow inmates, who would beat and assault him. He requested a cell transfer, but even in a new cell, the beatings continued.
He was finished!
Utterly ruined!
His daughter wanted nothing to do with him, just as he had once abandoned her.
Compared to his wretched state, they all looked immaculate and radiant.
Regret.
He was filled with overwhelming regret.
He shouldn’t have been so impulsive!
In the solemn and dignified courtroom, the judge spoke: “All rise. The verdict will now be read.”
Everyone stood.
Li Su also rose to her feet, with Huo Xuanye gripping her hand tightly, supporting her and letting her lean her weight against him.
Zhou Zhanpeng stared at Li Su standing and bellowed, “You’re standing! Your legs are healed!”
“Your Honor, her legs are fine now! I should be cleared!”
The judge commanded, “Order in the court!”
Zhou Zhanpeng was forcibly silenced.
The judge began reading the verdict:
“The Jing Intermediate People’s Court has concluded the trial of the case in which the prosecution accused the defendant, Zhou Zhanpeng, of intentional assault.
After review, the court finds: On August 29, 2025, in an act of retaliation against the victim, Li Su, the defendant Zhou Zhanpeng drove a motorcycle and repeatedly struck the victim’s legs with a steel pipe, causing comminuted fractures of both tibias and fibulas, as well as damage to the common peroneal nerve. Medical appraisal determined the injuries constituted a Grade 6 disability.
The defendant’s criminal methods were exceptionally cruel, the consequences extremely severe, and he has shown no remorse to this day.
According to Article 234 of the Criminal Law, intentionally harming another person’s body, resulting in severe injury, or employing especially cruel means to cause severe injury leading to serious disability, is punishable by imprisonment of ten years or more, life imprisonment, or the death penalty.
The judgment is as follows: Defendant Zhou Zhanpeng is found guilty of intentional assault and sentenced to life imprisonment, with lifelong deprivation of political rights. He is ordered to compensate the plaintiff in the incidental civil lawsuit for medical expenses, disability compensation, and other damages totaling 3.98 million RMB.
If dissatisfied with this judgment, an appeal may be filed within ten days of receiving the verdict.”
Zhou Zhanpeng would spend the rest of his life in prison.
Li Su watched as Zhou Zhanpeng trembled on the stand, her eyes still burning with fury.
She would never forget the harm he had inflicted on her.
The judge, stern-faced, added, “This court must emphasize that the defendant took pleasure in destroying the value of another’s life, particularly targeting a dancer whose art is expressed through her body. His methods were brutal, his motives despicable, trampling the very bottom line of human decency. The law exists not only to punish crime but to send a clear message to society: some harms are even more unforgivable than taking a life.”
Upon hearing this, Zhou Zhanpeng panicked and shouted, “Your Honor, I was wrong! I admit my guilt! I’ll never do it again!”
“Miss Li, please forgive me!”
“Miss Li, I lost my mind for a moment!”
“You can stand now, I don’t want to rot in prison forever!”
“Son-in-law! Son-in-law!”
“Save me, save me!”
Li Su regarded him coldly. “I will never forgive you in this lifetime.”
That’s right, no forgiveness.
Why should she forgive him just because he was condemned to life behind bars?
Zhou Zhanpeng had gotten exactly what he deserved.
Huo Xuanye’s gaze was icy with disdain. “You’d better resign yourself to prison life. Though how you fare there is up to you. Your precious daughter can’t even save herself, she won’t be visiting you.”
“What happened to her?”
“What happened to my daughter?”
No one answered Zhou Zhanpeng’s pleas.
Amid his roars, the group walked out of the courthouse.
As soon as they stepped outside, reporters swarmed around them.
Reporter: “Li Su, Li Su, are you satisfied with today’s verdict?”
Li Su: “I’m quite satisfied. For a dancer, legs are extremely, extremely important. Harming our legs is like harming our lives, crushing our very souls.”
Reporter: “Li Su, you’re still in a wheelchair now. Will you give up your dance career?”
