- Chapter 55 - Your Muscles Have Grown
Under the soft glow of the lights, Huo Xuanye emerged wearing black pajamas, his hair slicked back in a dramatic style.
Back when Huo Xuanye had been acting shamelessly in front of her, she had offhandedly remarked that he looked his best with his hair styled like this.
Turns out, she wasn’t wrong.
Without his hair covering his face, his exquisitely chiseled features were on full display. Fresh out of the shower, he looked clean and slightly damp, softening the sharp, wild edge he usually carried.
Huo Xuanye walked to the bedside, leaning down slowly until Li Su could catch the faint scent of his shower gel.
Their tall, straight noses brushed lightly before he tilted his head slightly, pressing his lips to hers.
The sudden kiss sent Li Su’s mind exploding like fireworks.
Excitement.
Her body melted into a languid haze.
Unable to resist, she gripped his pajamas, leaning into the lingering kiss.
Huo Xuanye’s appearance was wild and aggressively striking, but his lips were soft and warm against hers.
When they finally parted, Huo Xuanye cradled the back of her head. “The hairstyle you like, handsome?”
“Very.”
“Then I’ll keep it like this from now on.”
Li Su blinked. “No need. Just be yourself.”
“But this is me wanting to keep it like this.”
Li Su laughed. “What if your brother shows up with the same hairstyle tomorrow? You two would be mirror images.”
Huo Xuanye pulled her into his arms, murmuring against her cheek, “So you do think my brother looks better with this hairstyle, huh?”
She absolutely did not!!
That wasn’t what she meant at all.
“You’re the handsome one.”
“Hmph!”
Hmph?
Was he a child now?
Pouting like this.
Li Su lifted her gaze, her dewy eyes fixed on him. “Kiss me again.”
“You think I’ll just let you kiss me whenever you want?”
“You won’t?”
“Just a kiss?” Huo Xuanye’s gaze darkened as he interlaced his fingers with hers, trailing down her arm. “Can we do something else?”
However long Li Su had been hospitalized, Huo Xuanye had been holding back just as long.
“I-Is it okay?”
She hadn’t actually asked the doctor before being discharged.
“It should be fine… I’ll be careful with the positions.”
Huo Xuanye nuzzled her cheek. “Tell me if you feel uncomfortable. I’ll stop right away.”
If Li Su wasn’t up for it, then forget it.
He could always take matters into his own hands.
┭┮﹏┭┮
He’d be fine.
He’d been manually handling things for years now.
A few more months wouldn’t kill him.
But the earlier kiss had already stirred something in Li Su. “Be gentle… I trust you.”
“Mm.”
Right now, Li Su was as fragile as porcelain, requiring the utmost care.
No matter how much Huo Xuanye craved her, he only dared to do it once.
He didn’t even dare to share the bed with her at night, afraid of bumping her injured leg. Instead, he pitifully made do with a makeshift bed on the floor beside her, close enough that Li Su could call for him if needed.
By mid-October, the weather had begun to cool.
When Li Su woke, her bleary vision settled on Huo Xuanye lying on the floor.
Tall and broad-shouldered, curled up on his own makeshift bedding, it looked downright pitiful.
He could’ve slept on the couch, but he chose the floor.
He just wanted to stay near her, didn’t he?
Propping her chin on her hand, Li Su watched him quietly.
Though the brothers shared similar features, the longer one looked, the easier it became to tell them apart, their auras were entirely different.
Huo Xuanye might seem carefree on the surface, but he was thoughtful and deeply responsible at heart.
Huo Zhenzhou was responsible too, otherwise, he wouldn’t have married Zhou Motang.
Suddenly, Huo Xuanye’s eyes snapped open, locking onto Li Su’s gaze from the bedside.
“Darling, have you been staring at me all this time?”
Caught red-handed.
Rather than feeling embarrassed, Li Su responded with unflinching honesty, “I was watching you sleep, you look ridiculous.”
Huo Xuanye rose leisurely, “Yesterday you called me handsome, today you say I’m ugly. Tsk, women, so fickle.”
Li Su airily commanded, “Carry me to the bathroom.”
“Right away, darling.”
A good husband needs no coaxing.
Huo Xuanye effortlessly lifted her. “Did you sleep well at home last night?”
“Very comfortably. Much better than the hospital bed.”
“Of course a bed worth millions would feel good.” Huo Xuanye glanced at the makeshift bedding he’d slept on. “Darling, my back felt sore from the floor last night.”
“Sleep on the sofa tonight.”
“No, I want to sleep beside you. What if you need to use the bathroom at night?”
“I…”
A pair of crutches stood by the bedside.
But Li Su hadn’t used them yet.
The doctor advised minimal weight-bearing. Her body felt heavy, but to one day return to the stage, she couldn’t rush. Recovery had to come first.
Carrying his wife to the bathroom, then to wash up.
Seated on the marble vanity brushing her teeth, Li Su watched Huo Xuanye washing his face nearby. She reached out to squeeze his arm, and he immediately flexed, muscles bulging, saying nothing, just fixing her with a look that said See how strong your husband is?, eyebrows raised smugly.
Li Su poked his arm with a fingertip. “I think your muscles have gotten more defined during my month and a half of recovery.”
Huo Xuanye answered obediently, “From carrying you every day.”
“Getting tired of it?”
“Never. I want to. I love carrying my wife.” Huo Xuanye pressed his freshly washed face against her chest, looking up at her from below. “Baby, let me carry you for a lifetime.”
“No.”
His expression shifted instantly. “Reason?”
The electric toothbrush buzzed as Li Su mumbled through a mouthful of foam, “Will you still be able to carry me when you’re old? If we fall, two brittle old bones lying there with no one daring to help us up, don’t joke about health. I want to live a long life.”
“Fair point. I shouldn’t jeopardize my wife’s longevity.”
Since Li Su’s injury, Huo Xuanye had prioritized her well-being above all else.
He held a cup of water to her lips.
After over a month of being waited on hand and foot, Li Su accepted it naturally to rinse.
Their leisurely morning routine from waking to breakfast took half an hour.
On her first morning home, the entire Huo family gathered in the dining room, even the long-absent Huo Zhenzhou.
After more than a month away, he seemed even more austere.
Xiao Qiyu asked with concern, “Feeling better today, Susu?”
Li Su answered gently, “Much better.”
Huo Xuanye declared with cool arrogance, “With my devoted care, she’ll soon ditch the crutches, walking freely, running, jumping, even kicking me.”
As if kicking you is some grand achievement worth mentioning.
“Yes, yes,” Xiao Qiyu soothed repeatedly. “She’ll recover fully. A’ye, take good care of her.”
“Don’t worry, Mom. I will.”
Breakfast conversation flowed until the matriarch suddenly spoke up near the end.
“The doctor said your injury will take a long time to heal. It’ll be two years before you can return to your previous level on stage. Why not take this opportunity to focus on having a baby? By the time you recover, you’ll have a child too.”
Huo Xuanye quickly covered Li Su’s ears.
From the look in Huo Xuanye’s eyes, Li Su could tell exactly what he meant, he was saying: “We won’t listen, we refuse to listen.”
