- Chapter 49 - You Look So Haggard
“If she recovers well, she can continue dancing,” the doctor explained. “But it will take at least eight months.”
Eight months!!!
For Li Su, that was far too long.
“Thank you, Doctor.”
“Don’t let her fall asleep again within the next four hours,” the doctor instructed before leaving.
Huo Xuanye and the nurse wheeled the hospital bed back to the ward.
Li Su’s consciousness gradually cleared, she could hear everything.
“Darling, you heard what the doctor just said. He said you can still dance.”
“I’ll be with you through your recovery.”
“I’ll stay with you every day…”
The moment Li Su closed her eyes, Huo Xuanye panicked and called out to her.
“Wake up. The doctor said you can’t sleep, you’ll get dumber if you do…”
Li Su weakly opened her eyes.
Huo Xuanye wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but it seemed like she rolled her eyes at him.
But if she could roll her eyes, that was good.
It meant she was still alert.
Li Chen sat on the other side of the bed. “Sis, it’s all your husband’s fault. I’ve already beaten him up for you. And I won’t let the person who hurt you off the hook either, he’ll spend at least ten years in prison!”
Li Su was exhausted and wanted to sleep, but the doctor had forbidden it. So Huo Xuanye and Li Chen kept talking beside her.
She had learned everything about what happened that afternoon.
The person who hurt her turned out to be Zhou Motang’s father.
Now, he had been arrested and was being held in detention.
She wondered what would happen to tonight’s performance.
She was injured and couldn’t perform.
She’d have to compensate the production team again.
Wasn’t it supposed to be the age of 24, your zodiac year, when bad luck struck?
Why was she, at 23, so unlucky this year?
First, her fiancé lost his memory and married someone else. Now, she had injured both legs and had to leave the stage temporarily.
For a dancer, legs were everything.
An injured leg was practically a career-ender.
At night, only Huo Xuanye stayed in the ward with her.
She was on an IV drip, so she wasn’t hungry.
But…
“It hurts…”
The anesthesia had worn off, and though she had taken painkillers, they didn’t seem to be enough.
It still hurt…
Huo Xuanye sat by the bed, holding her hand. “Should you take another painkiller?”
“Two.”
“Sweetheart, taking too many is bad for your body… Fine, take them!”
Huo Xuanye had no principles when it came to her.
Nothing was more important than getting through the pain right now.
After taking the medicine, Li Su lay back down, weak and drained.
Huo Xuanye stroked her cheek, his reddened eyes welling up with tears again.
“I want to tear that bastard apart with my bare hands!”
“I’m so furious!”
“Darling, I’m so heartbroken…”
Huo Xuanye was filled with regret and rage.
Too bad Zhou Zhanpeng had already been taken to the police station.
“Do you want me to comfort you?” Li Su asked weakly.
“No!”
Huo Xuanye kissed her hand. “You don’t need to comfort me. You’re the patient, I should be comforting you…”
“Stop. I don’t want to hear it.”
Li Su closed her eyes. “I’m going to sleep.”
Huo Xuanye turned off the light.
There was a cot in the ward for family members, but even as he curled up on it, he couldn’t sleep.
The next day, Huo Xuanye’s parents and grandparents came to visit Li Su.
Not wanting to talk, Li Su closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.
“A’Ye, how are you handling this matter?” Huo Bowen asked in a hushed voice.
Huo Xuanye answered his father, his gaze fixed on Li Su in the bed. “I’ve left it to professional lawyers. Intentional assault, causing severe injury, cruel methods, and premeditated crime, the lawyers say the maximum sentence could be life imprisonment.”
“Susu is a dancer, so this is indeed a serious matter for her.” Xiao Qiyu also chimed in, “Poor child, I never imagined something like this would happen to her.”
“My heart aches for her taking care of A-Zhou, for her marrying into the capital city alone. I never expected she had such a vicious father behind her.”
“It’s so disappointing…”
Today, Zhou Motang wasn’t brought along either.
Li Su definitely wouldn’t want to see her.
“Susu needs proper rest. I’ll let her know you came to visit, but you should all head back now.” Huo Xuanye began ushering them out.
“Take good care of Susu, and don’t forget to eat. I’ll have the servants deliver three meals a day to the hospital room,” Xiao Qiyu said as she walked out.
Huo Xuanye nodded.
Once the room quieted down, Li Su’s parents, who had been traveling abroad, arrived.
Huo Xuanye didn’t dare say a word when he saw his in-laws, silently pouring water for them instead.
Li Su’s mother wept sorrowfully, “How could this happen? How could this happen? It must be so painful…”
Li Su’s father also sat by the bed, wiping away tears.
Seeing her parents like this, Li Su softly comforted them, “Mom, Dad, I’m fine. The doctor said I can recover.”
“Even if you recover, your body has suffered so much!”
“This is too much, too much!”
“That man is despicable! Absolutely despicable!”
“Huo Zhenzhou lost his memory, and his judgment is terrible, what kind of person did he bring into our lives?”
Li Su’s mother was furious.
Huo Xuanye sat obediently across from them, holding Li Su’s hand.
Her anger extended to him as well.
“Our daughter hasn’t been married to you for long, and in our home, she was never hurt like this!”
“You bring nothing but bad luck!”
Huo Xuanye: “……”
Yes, yes.
Everything his in-laws said was right.
It was his fault for not protecting Li Su well enough.
“Dad,” Li Su called softly, “it wasn’t him who hurt me. Don’t say things like that.”
Huo Xuanye was already drowning in guilt.
His eyes were even redder than hers.
He had cried yesterday and barely slept last night.
Huo Xuanye looked at Li Su with gratitude, his wife was speaking up for him.
His wife was the best.
He was her most devoted supporter.
He would love his wife for life!
Li Su’s parents stayed in the hospital room until evening before leaving.
After they left, Li Su gently tugged at Huo Xuanye’s sleeve. “Help me wipe my body.”
She couldn’t shower right now, but Li Su felt like she was starting to smell.
“Oh, sure.” Huo Xuanye’s ears turned red. “Everywhere?”
Li Su: “Wherever you can. Thank you.”
This was something only Huo Xuanye could do for her now.
He had already seen and touched every part of her.
There was no need to feel embarrassed.
For the first time, Huo Xuanye removed Li Su’s clothes without any hint of desire, carefully wiping her body.
His movements were slow, afraid of causing her pain.
It took him half an hour to finish.
Feeling clean, Li Su was much more comfortable.
Huo Xuanye took a quick shower and then sat by her bed to keep her company.
“Are you sleepy?”
“I’ve been sleeping all day.”
Li Su started playing with her phone.
She hadn’t attended the Qixi Festival gala, but her dance troupe had performed, and the show went on without her.
The production team, knowing she was injured and hadn’t skipped out without reason, didn’t demand compensation. They even sent someone to visit and express their concern.
Li Su took a selfie and posted it on Weibo to reassure her fans.
Her post was quickly flooded with comments.
As she scrolled through them, she came across Huo Xuanye’s reply.
Three simple words:
Hug my wife!
Li Su turned her gaze toward him, only to meet Huo Xuanye’s puppy-dog eyes brimming with affection, on the verge of tears.
She reached out and gently caressed his cheek. “Darling, you look so worn out. Promise me you’ll get a good night’s sleep tonight.”
