Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 56
The next day, around two or three in the afternoon, Xu Rongjiang had already arrived at the entrance of the film studio.
Ruan Yang had mentioned bringing someone to pick him up, but Xu Rongjiang insisted that she come alone, without anyone else. Ruan Yang guessed that “anyone else” included Xu Zhiyi, so she handed over the afternoon’s filming duties to the assistant director and went to meet Xu Rongjiang by herself.
“Uncle Xu,” she greeted him, opening the car door for him.
To Ruan Yang’s surprise, Xu Rongjiang not only refused to let her bring anyone else but had also come with just a driver.
Seeing Ruan Yang, Xu Rongjiang stepped out of the car and smiled. “Yangyang, thank you for coming to pick me up.”
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Ruan Yang gestured toward the direction of the film crew and led Xu Rongjiang there.
Xu Rongjiang asked the driver to wait where he was, and the two of them chatted intermittently along the way. However, since they weren’t biological father and daughter, their relationship, though improved somewhat through recent interactions, remained somewhat stiff. After a few polite exchanges, they ran out of things to say.
Walking behind Xu Rongjiang, Ruan Yang could clearly sense his excitement even nervousness from the way he kept adjusting his collar.
She averted her gaze, pretending not to notice, and led Xu Rongjiang around the set. Xu Rongjiang had specifically asked Ruan Yang not to announce his identity, and since no one in the crew paid much attention to what corporate executives looked like, everyone simply assumed Ruan Yang was showing some producer around.
Throughout the tour, Xu Rongjiang kept glancing around restlessly. It wasn’t until Ruan Yang brought him near a temporary rest area on set that his gaze finally settled, like a wanderer who had at last found his destination.
Following his line of sight, Ruan Yang looked across a small lake and saw Xu Zhiyi chatting with the other lead actors. Opposite her was Cheng Jiamu, and beside her was Shi Fangxuan, surrounded by a few supporting actors. They seemed to be discussing how to approach the next scene.
They appeared to be enjoying themselves, with bursts of laughter occasionally drifting over.
Xu Rongjiang stood there quietly.
For a fleeting moment, Ruan Yang saw a gentle expression on Xu Rongjiang’s face, his usual imposing aura completely dissipated. In that instant, he no longer seemed like the calculating chairman of a conglomerate but just an ordinary middle-aged man.
After standing there for several minutes, Ruan Yang finally asked, “Should I call Zhiyi and the others over for you?”
“No!” Xu Rongjiang’s eyes flickered briefly, as if he were wavering, but in the end, he shook his head. “No need. I just came to take a look. Let’s go.”
The two walked back toward the studio entrance in silence.
The journey was quiet. Ruan Yang didn’t ask anything, and Xu Rongjiang didn’t offer any explanations.
When they reached Xu Rongjiang’s car, Ruan Yang opened the door for him. Xu Rongjiang had already gotten in when he suddenly held the door open again.
“Yangyang,” he said, pressing his lips together, “I’ve watched your series. It’s very good, and I have great confidence in you.”
Ruan Yang paused for a couple of seconds, then raised an eyebrow slightly. “Thank you, Uncle. I’ll work hard to live up to your expectations.”
Xu Rongjiang still didn’t release the car door. His gaze softened as he looked at Ruan Yang: “I promised you before that if this drama turns out well, I would add another round of investment. Don’t worry, Yangyang, Uncle always keeps his word. I’ll send someone over later to discuss the investment details.”
Ruan Yang was about to thank Xu Rongjiang when he continued, “I have high hopes for this drama. Coincidentally, I’ve been free lately, so I booked a hotel near the film studio to take a break consider it a little vacation for myself. I might drop by your set often during this time. I hope you won’t mind, Yangyang.”
“…” Ruan Yang lowered her head. Seeing Xu Rongjiang’s beaming smile, she forced one in return. “Of course, Uncle. I’d be happy to have you.”
“Good.” Perhaps sensing that Ruan Yang’s smile wasn’t as genuine as before, Xu Rongjiang sighed, his tone tinged with helplessness. “Yangyang, I know your mother must have talked to you. Rest assured, I will marry her, it’s just that I’m not ready yet. I want to give her a grand wedding, which is why I postponed it.”
“Please talk to your mother for me. Tell her to stop crying all the time.” He tried to reassure Ruan Yang. “Your mother and you are my family. I will make sure you both have your rightful place.”
Ruan Yang’s smile remained unchanged. “I’ll talk to her. Goodbye, Uncle.”
Only then did Xu Rongjiang finally close the car door, waving for Ruan Yang to head back before instructing the driver to leave.
After the car disappeared from sight, Ruan Yang stood rooted in place for a long while before finally letting her smile fade. A faint, icy smirk flickered across her lips.
–
Back on set, Ruan Yang had just sat down when Xu Zhiyi walked in.
She took a seat across from Ruan Yang, casually pouring her a glass of water before serving herself. “My dad left?” she asked leisurely.
She had actually seen it earlier Ruan Yang and Xu Rongjiang standing by the lake, watching her from afar for a long time.
“Yeah.” Ruan Yang finished the water Xu Zhiyi had poured for her. “He booked a hotel near the studio. Said he’s very invested in this drama and plans to stay for a while.”
Xu Zhiyi froze for a moment at the news, then looked at Ruan Yang with a meaningful smirk. “Tell me, does this mean my dad trusts you or doesn’t trust you?”
Ruan Yang couldn’t say for sure, but she sensed that Xu Rongjiang’s decision to stay wasn’t as simple as he made it sound.
She didn’t answer Xu Zhiyi’s question.
“I really understand my dear father less and less these days,” Xu Zhiyi mused.
She didn’t know what Xu Rongjiang’s true intentions were, but she was certain they had nothing to do with her.
After so many years as his daughter, she was confident about that.
Days passed uneventfully. Ruan Yang had expected Xu Rongjiang to visit the set frequently, but half a month went by without a single appearance from him.
If not for the fact that she clearly remembered Xu Rongjiang saying those words, she might have thought she’d misheard him that day.
However, Xu Rongjiang’s absence from meddling in the production crew’s affairs was a good thing for Ruan Yang, and she naturally wouldn’t take the initiative to ask what he had been busy with lately.
As for Xu Zhiyi.
Having terminated her contract with Xunguang, she had no other schedules or commitments recently, so she had been staying in Ruan Yang’s film crew all this time. Spending her days with Shi Fangxuan, she easily noticed that over the past half-month, someone had been sending gifts to Shi Fangxuan almost every day.
On an ordinary late afternoon in deep autumn, the air was chilly. Xu Zhiyi, curled up in the makeup room, saw Shi Fangxuan’s assistant walk in again, holding a massive bouquet of white roses.
The assistant stood beside Shi Fangxuan with practiced ease. Without even opening her mouth, Shi Fangxuan merely frowned and waved her hand, and the assistant immediately understood, nodding before walking back out.
Xu Zhiyi had witnessed this scene many times before. Without a doubt, the bouquet would end up in the trash bin outside the break room.
In the past, Xu Zhiyi hadn’t felt it appropriate to ask, but today, her curiosity got the better of her. She sidled up to Shi Fangxuan and asked, “Sister Fangxuan, is this some admirer sending flowers to the set? Why white roses every single day? Couldn’t they switch it up a bit?”
Shi Fangxuan seemed thoroughly unimpressed by this flower-sender. She pursed her lips, checked her makeup in the mirror, then tapped Xu Zhiyi’s forehead lightly. “You, little one, shouldn’t ask questions you don’t need to.”
“Come on, I’m just curious,” Xu Zhiyi said. By now, she and Shi Fangxuan had grown quite close. After a month of working together, they’d discovered they shared many interests and had practically become fast friends despite their age difference. She wrapped her arms around Shi Fangxuan’s arm and gave it a gentle shake. “Just tell me, Sister Fangxuan.”
When Xu Zhiyi acted spoiled, there were very few people in the world who could resist her.
At the very least, Shi Fangxuan, also an Omega, couldn’t.
She patted Xu Zhiyi’s arm and sighed softly. “Just some bad karma from my younger days.”
From her tone, Xu Zhiyi could tell Shi Fangxuan wasn’t willing to elaborate, so she didn’t press further.
The days that followed passed quickly. Xu Zhiyi spent her time filming, having meals with Ruan Yang, and occasionally going out with other cast members during breaks.
Though leaving Xunguang meant fewer work commitments than before, her life had become much more relaxed and far happier. She was quite satisfied with her current state.
A few days later, as the evening sun cast a beautiful glow, Cheng Jiamu and a few supporting actors invited her to dinner after work.
Shi Fangxuan wasn’t around, and glancing at the group, Xu Zhiyi realized she was the only Omega among them. She shook her head. “I’ll pass. You all go ahead.”
Cheng Jiamu didn’t insist and left with the others.
Xu Zhiyi had planned to head straight back to rest, but when she turned around, she saw Ruan Yang still sitting in front of the monitor, brows furrowed.
She grabbed a bottle of water and walked over, placing it beside Ruan Yang. “Will you be busy for much longer? Want to take a walk to the nearby night market and enjoy the sunset?”
The moment she saw Xu Zhiyi, Ruan Yang’s tense expression softened instantly. She shook her head. “Not much longer. Let’s go.”
After giving a few instructions to the crew, she stood up and left with Xu Zhiyi, heading toward the night market behind the film studio.
The night market was bustling, usually crowded with people, so Xu Zhiyi still wore a mask and a hat. Beyond the market, there was a small bridge that few visited, offering an excellent view of a stunning sunset.
Today was no exception, the crowd was dense. Ruan Yang held Xu Zhiyi close as they navigated through the throng, making their way toward that little bridge.
Along the way, Ruan Yang was jostled a few times. Worried that Xu Zhiyi might get hurt or recognized, she tightened her embrace.
After about five or six minutes, they finally reached the bridge.
Xu Zhiyi stood by the railing. The sunset that day was dazzling, its golden-orange hues spilling onto the river, casting a long, elliptical reflection. The evening clouds shimmered above the water, radiant and colorful, as if within arm’s reach.
It was a sight that brought peace to the heart.
She gazed quietly for a while before realizing Ruan Yang hadn’t joined her by the railing.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, turning around.
Ruan Yang stood frozen in place, hands buried in her jacket pockets, her brows furrowed.
She seemed to ponder for a moment, her fingers shifting inside her pockets before she finally spoke in a low voice, “I lost my phone.”
“Stolen?” Xu Zhiyi walked over. “Are you sure you even brought it out?”
Ruan Yang tried to recall the faces of the people who had bumped into her earlier. She nodded. “I’m sure. Wait here for me whoever took it probably hasn’t gone far yet.”
“You’re going after them yourself?” Xu Zhiyi frowned. “The night market is packed. How would you even find them? Shouldn’t we just call the police?”
“No,” Ruan Yang shook her head. “I can find it myself. Just wait here for me.”
She turned to leave, but Xu Zhiyi didn’t understand why she was so frantic over a phone. “If it’s lost, it’s lost. We can just buy another one later. Wouldn’t it be safer to let the police handle it?”
Ruan Yang paused and looked back.
Truthfully, losing the phone itself didn’t matter, there was nothing important on it. She didn’t care about that.
But the pendant inside that couldn’t be lost.
Her lips pressed into a thin line. “I have to find it. It’s important to me.”
Extremely important.
