- Chapter 72 - The Gift
Ling Xi held the bowl for a long time without moving. Qin Yun, sitting beside her, saw she had no appetite and served her a bowl of soup: “If you really can’t eat, drink some soup. Just manage a few sips.”
Qin Yun had specially asked the family chef to simmer medicinal pigeon soup; there wasn’t a trace of oil in it. But as Ling Xi took the bowl and brought it to her mouth, a burning sourness surged from the pit of her stomach. She covered her mouth and ran frantically into the bathroom.
To avoid worrying others, Ling Xi deliberately left the faucet running. But the harsh sound of vomiting still reached Qin Yun and Ji Changyi.
Qin Yun silently stared at the table of appetizing food, finally letting out a sigh of helplessness: “I don’t know what to do anymore.”
Ji Changyi held her soup bowl, savoring it carefully. She smacked her lips and explained, “Common knowledge is that the stomach is a digestive organ, but it’s also an emotional organ. The acid reflux is caused by not eating and psychological resistance. Ling Xi has been exposed to too much stimulating information these past few days. It’s already quite good that she’s held up this long. But the body doesn’t lie; she’s starting to break down.”
“We can’t just watch her be so despondent. If absolutely necessary, we’ll send her to the hospital. Even just to get some IV nutrients,” Qin Yun said worriedly.
“Can we save her for a moment, and save her for a lifetime? This is a sickness of the heart, and the cure is in Florence… I wonder how Pohl is doing right now…” Ji Changyi sighed mournfully. She put down her bowl and looked at Ling Xi, who was walking out of the bathroom, and asked indifferently, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” Ling Xi hastily wiped her mouth. To keep Qin Yun from worrying too much about her, she walked to the table, picked up the soup bowl, and tried hard to drink it. But the painful expression on her face made it look as if she were drinking poison. She painstakingly finished the bowl.
What should have been an ordinary meal inexplicably stirred a pang of sadness in Qin Yun’s heart: “Don’t force yourself. If you feel unwell, just tell us. How about we go to the hospital?”
“I’m really fine.” Ling Xi stubbornly refused Qin Yun’s kindness. She sat in the chair, but still couldn’t touch the chopsticks.
Chu Xi suddenly pushed the door open. Xiao Mo and Su Yunjin, who followed her in, rushed to Ling Xi the moment they entered, their faces distressed.
Su Yunjin immediately put an arm around Ling Xi’s shoulder, reaching up to touch her increasingly thin face, complaining, “Why didn’t you tell us when something happened?”
“Do you consider us outsiders!” Xiao Mo was even angrier, his opening line a furious question. Ling Xi was overwhelmed by the sudden appearance of her two friends, and tears abruptly flooded her eyes.
She was like a child who had made a mistake, suddenly facing her parents’ censure, and could only rely on crying to vent her self-blame, her lips trembling, unable to figure out where to start.
Su Yunjin hugged her tenderly, coaxing her gently: “If Miss Chu hadn’t told us the whole story, we wouldn’t have known what you’ve been through these past few days.”
Xiao Mo put his hands on his hips, his temper finally softening: “What major event haven’t we faced together? You can’t shoulder Qiao Pohl’s trouble alone. This won’t solve the problem, you can’t be like this.”
The last woman to enter was holding a briefcase and a stack of thick documents. She adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses and nodded politely to Qin Yun.
Chu Xi spoke up at the right time, breaking the trio’s reunion: “Attorney An, the three partners of Xiao Yunxi Studio are all present. Please go to the study to organize the documents, we can start soon.”
“Yes, Secretary Chu.” An Rao nodded knowingly in response, then walked straight into the study.
The three looked at Chu Xi in confusion, but Chu Xi offered no explanation, instead building suspense: “There are some important matters that Miss Pohl arranged when she came to Xuancheng. The lawyer was only instructed to disclose the information when the time was right. So, please don’t worry, just follow me to the study.”
Su Yunjin carefully helped Ling Xi up. Ling Xi frantically the table and grabbed Qin Yun, asking somewhat hysterically, “Why arrange for a lawyer? Why is Pohl announcing information at this time? Miss Qin, don’t scare me…”
Qin Yun comforted Ling Xi, rubbing her back: “This is a good thing for you. It was specially arranged by Pohl for you. Don’t let your mind run wild.”
“But Pohl isn’t here, I…”
“Don’t be afraid, trust me.”
Chu Xi watched Qin Yun’s gentle comfort, and her heart felt a surge of jealousy. She walked up to Ling Xi, took her arm, and pulled her toward the study: “I’m leaving the day after tomorrow. You acting like this will only make everyone worry about you and revolve around you. Can you pull yourself together?”
“You’re leaving? Are you going to see Pohl? Can you take me with you?” Ling Xi no longer cared about losing face. She desperately humbled herself, pleading with Chu Xi.
“Take you? Don’t I have enough burdens as it is?” Chu Xi’s attitude was too harsh. Qin Yun interrupted her: “Chu Xi, now is not the time to be moody. Ling Xi is sick; you should be more patient.”
“Do I look like I’m being moody? To be precise, I’m angry.”
Qin Yun rarely saw such an aggressive attitude from Chu Xi. Chu Xi refused to give Ling Xi a kind look and shook off Ling Xi’s hand from her arm.
“Secretary Chu, did I do something wrong? I apologize to you.”
“You didn’t do anything wrong. You’re just sick. So, because you’re sick, the whole world should revolve around you, worrying about your every move, otherwise, you’ll die.” Chu Xi’s words were blunt but accurate, leaving even Xiao Mo and Su Yunjin silent.
“Chu Xi!” Qin Yun stepped in front of her, trying to stop her, but Chu Xi didn’t back down and continued to scold: “If you hadn’t insisted on saving Lin Fangwan, Miss wouldn’t have been taken away. You simply don’t know what this means…”
“Yes, ignorance is bliss. You don’t know anything. So, you deserve to be forgiven, but I can’t look at things from a neutral perspective.”
“Because of the huge trouble you caused, everyone has to clean up your mess. And this trip, those who clean up your mess, will be severely hurt, let alone Miss Pohl.”
“Slap!” The sudden slap stunned everyone. Regret flashed in Qin Yun’s angry eyes, and her hand trembled slightly.
Chu Xi finally calmed down. She wasn’t angry at Qin Yun; she just gritted her teeth and walked silently to the sofa.
“Don’t take Chu Xi’s words to heart. Pohl is safe and will be fine. Go and sit in the study.” Clearly, Qin Yun’s words no longer had a comforting effect.
Ling Xi’s eyes gradually became vacant. She opened her slightly hoarse mouth. Ji Changyi took her medicine from her pocket and brought it to Ling Xi’s mouth as a precaution: “Take your medicine first. After the lawyer explains things, you can go back to bed and rest.”
Xiao Mo promptly brought water. Ling Xi obediently took the medicine and stopped making noise.
The three entered the study one after another. An Rao sat in the office chair, the documents spread across the table nearly covering the entire spacious surface. The quarrel that had just occurred in the living room had not affected her; this was professional quality.
“Since the three partners are all here, let’s proceed with the formalities. According to the request of my client, Miss Pohl, the following matters are not to be disclosed externally. So, please help close the door; only the people present can remain.”
An Rao finished her opening statement and carefully double-checked her list.
Xiao Mo, as the main person in charge of the studio, couldn’t understand what Qiao Pohl was doing. He cautiously asked, “Attorney An, what kind of procedure are we going through? I don’t quite understand.”
An Rao smiled and pointed to the pile of documents on the table, explaining: “To be precise, this is a unilateral act of donation from my client. Everything has been notarized and is protected by law. As long as you agree, sign and fingerprint, and then notarize it again, these assets will slowly be transferred to the studio’s name.”
Ling Xi, slumped on the sofa, felt her mind go blank. She looked at An Rao in a daze, shaking her head repeatedly: “We don’t need this kind of gift.”
“Miss Ling, please let me finish the procedure first. Then you can decide whether to accept it, alright?”
Su Yunjin and Xiao Mo exchanged glances. For anyone else, who wouldn’t love a windfall from the sky? But Qiao Pohl had disappeared, so this couldn’t be called a good thing.
“My client, Miss Qiao Pohl, voluntarily donates Rongzhi Company, which is under her name, to the partners of Xiao Yunxi Studio. Her original purpose for establishing the company was to express her gratitude.”
“Thank you, Mr. Xiao Mo and Miss Su Yunjin, for caring for Miss Ling like family during the years she faced difficulties.”
“Secondly, Rongzhi Company, as the organizer of this fall’s auction exhibition, will reserve a separate day for a pre-auction exhibition for all the collections from Xiao Yunxi Studio participating in the auction, finding the most suitable buyers for all the collections. Furthermore, on the day of the auction, the climax segment will be reserved for all the auction items from Xiao Yunxi Studio.”
“In addition, all the antiques and art collections that Miss Pohl left in her office display cabinet and villa display cabinet will be donated free of charge to Mr. Xiao Mo and Miss Su Yunjin.”
“Once again, I sincerely thank you for accompanying Miss Ling through the tough times in her life. I hope that in this life, the two of you can continue to deeply love, tolerate, and care for her like family.”
After the brief introduction, An Rao organized all the documents and handed them to the two: “Mr. Xiao, Miss Su, you may first look at the donation agreement. If you have any questions, you can consult me at any time.”
Ling Xi’s eyes widened until they gradually became moist.
At this moment, she finally felt, firsthand, Qiao Pohl’s intense and unshakeable love. That crazy woman had always reserved the best of everything for her.
Her love, her persistence, her unreasonable fussiness.
She never asked Ling Xi what she wanted; she only wanted to give unconditionally, even wanting to tear out her own fragmented heart to fill Ling Xi’s ravaged one.
Such love, at this moment, became a dull knife, scraping at Ling Xi’s heart. It hurt deeply, yet there were no visible wounds, no blood.
Su Yunjin and Xiao Mo fell silent. They showed no intention of accepting the agreement. The air grew quiet.
“Do you have any questions? You can ask them.” An Rao was very patient.
“I’m sorry, we… we appreciate Miss Pohl’s kindness, but we cannot accept it.” Su Yunjin was the one who made the decision. She loved money, but not in this way.
An Rao was somewhat surprised. This incredible offer was being easily refused.
Xiao Mo’s action was more drastic. He simply snatched the agreement from An Rao’s hand and tore it into shreds right in front of her.
Xiao Mo didn’t look angry; he just chided in a low voice: “Qiao Pohl is always like this, putting a limited value on the good things we do for Ling Xi. Our love for her is clearly a pure thing, no different from her love… But I cannot deny that her kindness to Ling Xi is sincere.”
An Rao was stunned. Looking at the fragments of the original document on the floor, she was momentarily at a loss for words.
Su Yunjin saw her predicament and smiled, waving her hand: “Attorney An, Xiao Yunxi Studio doesn’t need any capital support. We are just a small studio. Archaeology, appraisal, and auctioning are already our professional hobbies. Money complicates human relationships, so… as I said before, we appreciate Miss Pohl’s kindness.”
“Actually, you two don’t have to rush to refuse. You can consider it further, and it doesn’t matter even if the agreement is torn… Now, perhaps the two of you can step out and rest… Please have Ling Xi stay. Miss Pohl has something else to tell her.”
