- Chapter 65 - Ingenuity
Jo Pol did not go back inside to rest, but instead wandered aimlessly in the garden.
Her emotions were conflicted. She tried to believe that Ling Xi’s sudden departure was because of Xiao Mo. But recalling the words about Lin Fangwan just before Ling Xi left, the woman’s sixth sense began to work wildly.
Always sharp, Jo Pol estimated the drive to Xiao Mo’s house would take about fifteen minutes, so she forced herself to wait for a long time before hesitantly calling him.
“Hello, Xiao Mo.”
“What is it?”
“Did you talk to Ling Xi about anything just now?”
“Nothing too important. I wouldn’t disturb her at night. Why?”
“Are you sure you didn’t look for her?” Jo Pol’s volume increased in her counter-question. She refused to accept the fact that Ling Xi had lied.
“Why would I lie to you?” Xiao Mo’s tone was indifferent, but when discussing Ling Xi, he was somewhat concerned: “Did something happen?” Receiving no response, Jo Pol abruptly hung up the phone.
She quickly returned to the living room, grabbed the spare car key, and hurried to retrieve the car. But Jo Pol didn’t know where to look for Ling Xi’s whereabouts.
A phone ring pierced the silent garden. It was Qu Ye’s call—
“Boss, where are you?”
“I’m in the villa area.”
“Where is Ling Xi? Is Ling Xi with you?” Hearing Qu Ye’s anxious tone, Jo Pol realized the situation was out of her control. She wanted to remain calm, but anything involving Ling Xi easily threw her into confusion.
“She just left, I don’t know where she went!”
“Please don’t run around. Nan Cen and I are coming over right away.”
Starting the car engine, Jo Pol anxiously beat the steering wheel and whispered, “What are you coming here for? Go look for Ling Xi!”
There were still thirty minutes left until the agreed-upon time of 23:00, which was quite ample.
Ling Xi redialed Li Song’en’s number. The other party didn’t answer, but soon she received an MMS video.
Lin Fangwan’s swollen face, accompanied by bloodstains at the corner of her mouth, and her unconscious appearance stimulated Ling Xi’s senses. She had never encountered such a thing and could only step on the gas pedal and drive towards the harbor.
This video felt more like a silent threat, warning Ling Xi not to mess around.
“I can’t answer the phone because I’m sick…” Turning her head to look at the caller ID, it was Jo Pol. Ling Xi hesitated.
She cleared her throat, trying to make her voice sound as natural as possible, before answering the call: “Pol, what’s wrong?”
“Why did you lie to me!! Where are you?”
Having been exposed by this clever woman, and facing a barrage of questions, Ling Xi parted her lips, not knowing how to explain.
“Where are you, don’t scare me!” Jo Pol’s tone suddenly became choked. She was afraid, afraid that the feelings she had finally found hope in would be easily shattered again.
“Fangwan got into trouble. The person who kidnapped her demanded that I must go alone to resolve the issue, that’s why I didn’t tell you.” Ling Xi no longer concealed the truth and could only answer honestly.
Jo Pol was silent on the other end of the phone, but quickly and calmly demanded: “Where is the agreed location? You can’t go alone!”
Despite facing unknown danger, Ling Xi still wanted to soothe Jo Pol’s anxious feelings. She could only bite the bullet and take all the blame: “I don’t want to involve you. I can handle it well.”
“Ling Xi, listen to me, this is not a problem you can solve alone. The other party is coming for me.”
Ling Xi did not know the complex relationship. But she unconditionally trusted Jo Pol, and her desire to protect her became stronger: “Although I don’t understand the relationship between you, Lin Fangwan, and the person who kidnapped her. If it really involves you, I absolutely cannot let you show up.”
“You can’t go, please don’t go… if you go… he will get his way.”
Hearing Jo Pol’s distressed plea, Ling Xi clenched her teeth. Before hanging up, she had to speak her mind: “Please believe me, I don’t love Lin Fangwan, but if something has really happened to her, how can I live in peace? I can’t just ignore it… I’m sorry, Pol, I’m sorry…”
Ling Xi saved her gentleness for Jo Pol. There was no harm in her explanation; she could only continuously say “I’m sorry,” and the three apologetic words concealed a difficult-to-express affection.
When the busy signal sounded in the receiver, Jo Pol slammed the gas pedal to the floor. She called Zanda, hysterically: “Go find Ling Xi for me, I need you to go find Ling Xi right now!”
“Understood.” Zanda’s voice was deep, but that one word “understood” could give people enough of a sense of security.
The man sitting comfortably in Florence, enjoying his leisure, merely cast two chess pieces and easily shattered the peace Jo Pol longed for.
The air in the abandoned container yard was filled with the smell of decayed rust.
Ling Xi’s footsteps echoed. Li Song’en, sitting on the riverside embankment, had been waiting for a long time. He leisurely checked the time and snapped his fingers at Ling Xi: “You’re early.”
Li Song’en was wearing a baseball cap. With the moonlight, Ling Xi couldn’t clearly see his appearance.
“Where is Lin Fangwan?” Ling Xi was nervous, not because she was afraid something would happen to herself, but worried about what the other party would do to Lin Fangwan.
Li Song’en played with the lighter in his hand, his tone overflowing with delight: “Don’t rush.”
“What exactly do you want to do?” Ling Xi finally couldn’t help but yell. However, the other party still maintained an indifferent attitude: “Honestly, I went to great lengths to lure you, and the fact that you’re so easily fooled really wasted my passion and excitement.”
The man mocked, stood up, and came in front of Ling Xi, walking around her once, spreading his hands and playing the rogue: “Actually, Lin Fangwan isn’t here, but whether to save her or not, that is a multiple-choice question.”
“Multiple-choice question?”
“If I’m not mistaken, Jo Pol should be looking for you everywhere, right? She is very clever, always able to sense danger early.”
“Kidnapping Lin Fangwan to threaten me, and wanting to involve Jo Pol, what exactly do you want to gain?”
“What I want to gain, isn’t it obvious? Of course, it’s Jo Pol.”
The lighter in Li Song’en’s hand made a crisp clinking sound, directly pointing to his goal.
Ling Xi finally understood the meaning of Jo Pol’s words “he will get his way” over the phone.
“Lin Fangwan or Jo Pol, a happiness two-choice selection.” Li Song’en was merely bored and wanted to play with Ling Xi.
He had already made two preparations. If Ling Xi chose Lin Fangwan, that would be the best result. At that time, Jo Pol would pay a price of a one-for-one exchange for Ling Xi’s choice.
If Ling Xi chose Jo Pol, he would have an excuse to kidnap her. No matter how you looked at the outcome, Jo Pol would have no choice but to jump into the fire pit.
Jo Di’s two chess pieces leveraged all of Jo Pol’s arrangements in Xuan City. His ingenuity finally surfaced—Ling Xi was the source of the trouble.
Ling Xi realized she had been tricked. Choosing either person at this moment was meaningless. She stopped answering the question and took steps backward, wanting to leave.
Li Song’en saw through her intention immediately. His other hand, hidden in his pocket, suddenly pulled out a stun gun and pressed it against her body: “Trying to run?”
“Damn it, I won’t choose anything.”
“That’s probably not up to you.” Li Song’en sneered. The stun gun let out a sizzling sound, and Ling Xi’s body instantly twitched and cramped.
This sensation dragged her back to that terrifying near-death memory. She clenched her teeth and fell to the ground.
“Oh, it actually didn’t manage to stun you. Your body is quite tolerant.”
Li Song’en mocked, feeling that playing was not exciting enough, and pressed the stun gun onto Ling Xi’s waist again, giving her a few more severe shocks.
Ling Xi wrinkled her nose and widened her eyes. The veins on her forehead and neck protruded, and her spine was so rigid that she couldn’t bend.
Li Song’en yanked the collar of Ling Xi’s clothes and dragged her, who was now unable to move, into the container prepared beforehand.
Ling Xi was tied up tightly in a chair, weakly letting out muffled groans of pain.
Li Song’en took Ling Xi’s phone and repeated his trick, filming a video of her in a miserable state, and sent it to Jo Pol.
Pressing the voice record, he merely mumbled one sentence: “The address has been sent to you. You must come alone. Lin Fangwan and Ling Xi in exchange for you, you won’t lose out.”
The moment he clicked send, Li Song’en let out a relieved smile, but the smile carried hatred.
Why the hatred? If Jo Pol hadn’t repeatedly sent Zanda to sabotage his plan, he wouldn’t have ended up being humiliated by Jo Di.
Jo Di was a devil he dared not provoke. That man who disregarded life and death was cold-blooded and sinister. The lives of his entire family were in that man’s hands. Without any other options, who would willingly become an outlaw?
Seeing the message from Ling Xi, Jo Pol was initially delighted, believing she was safe.
However, after clicking on the video, Jo Pol, who had finally been walking towards the light, was forcefully shoved back into the abyss.
Watching the hazy Ling Xi tied to a chair, the other party maliciously held the stun gun, deliberately making a terrifying electrical current sound.
Her heart leaped into her throat. Jo Pol was on the verge of losing it.
“The address has been sent to you. You must come alone. Lin Fangwan and Ling Xi in exchange for you, you won’t lose out.”
The threat from the unfamiliar man made Jo Pol completely lose her mind. She didn’t even bother to inform Qu Ye and Zanda, only remembering that she had to go alone. So she slammed the gas pedal again.
Li Song’en sat on the riverside embankment as usual, quietly waiting. Until he heard the urgent sound of high heels, his smile grew even colder.
Soon, Jo Pol appeared in front of him, panting and threatening: “If you dare to do anything to Ling Xi, let alone you, I won’t let Jo Di go either.”
Li Song’en pretended to be very scared. He pulled out his phone, turned on the speaker, and played Jo Di’s voice message—
“Pearl Josepha, you’ve been crazy enough, come home.”
That irresistible and familiar tone only ignited greater anger in Jo Pol. She scolded in a low voice: “Bastard, does my feud with him require all of you to go crazy too? Where is Ling Xi? I’m asking you, where is Ling Xi!”
“Be calm. I know you’re worried about her, but please relax, she won’t die.”
“Isn’t this just to force me back to Florence? Was all this trouble necessary?”
“Miss Pearl, you should be very clear about the boss’s way of doing things. He has never cared about the lives of others, and I am also involuntarily involved.”
Li Song’en quietly complained about his helplessness. How could Jo Pol believe his hypocritical words? She continued to press: “Take me to see Ling Xi, I want to see her!”
At this moment, a tall, sturdy figure silently stood on the nearest container.
Li Song’en’s triumphant smile instantly stiffened upon seeing the arrival. He yelled at Jo Pol: “Damn it! How dare you bring someone! Don’t you want to see Ling Xi?!”
