- Chapter 36 - Qin yun
It was the busiest hour of the morning, and Qin Yun stood in the doorway of the office, holding a cup of freshly ground coffee she had prepared herself. She didn’t walk in immediately, but deliberately paused at the door, quietly admiring the beautiful sight inside the room.
After a moment of silence, she finally couldn’t help but flirt a little: “I like watching you work seriously at your computer. Your brows furrow slightly, the sound of your typing is very pleasant, and your pursed lips make me fall into a reverie—what does your lipstick taste like?”
Facing Qin Yun’s intentional or unintentional harassment, Chu Xi was unmoved. She merely raised a weary hand to rub the bridge of her nose, hoping to catch a short rest in the interruption.
However, as Qin Yun was still her small boss, the necessary courtesy was never absent. But regardless of Qin Yun’s charming demeanor, Chu Xi’s attitude was always cold: “When did President Qin change her taste, constantly thinking about winning a woman’s favor? Instead of wasting time here with me, you might as well focus on the company and help share the burden with President Qiao.”
Receiving such a ruthless response, Qin Yun didn’t take offense.
She perched on the edge of the office desk, putting down the specially prepared coffee, and casually picked up Chu Xi’s signature pen to fiddle with.
The expression on Qin Yun’s face was her usual frivolous and relaxed one, as she began to preach: “What a beautiful world of flowers it is. I am born to play and don’t want to exhaust myself and spend my life on work. Things will never be finished, just as money can never be earned completely.”
This baseless remark drew a mocking laugh from Chu Xi. Subconsciously, she picked up the coffee and took a sip. The rich aroma stirred up a faded memory belonging to them both. The involuntary lift of her brow in satisfaction did not escape Qin Yun’s eye.
Chu Xi had always been particularly fond of the coffee personally brewed by Qin Yun, but the number of times she had tasted it was few and far between, and she had never shown her affection. In her eyes, Qin Yun was a person on another parallel line, and no intersection was the best outcome.
Qin Yun was rarely like a small woman, her eyes harboring anticipation. She wanted to hear words of praise. Even a simple ‘not bad’ could ignite the hard-to-extinguish desire to show off.
Unfortunately, apart from the appreciative raised brow, no further comment was drawn.
Chu Xi looked at the time displayed on the monitor. She still had a pile of important tasks to handle, so she hinted at driving Qin Yun away: “Is there anything you need from me, President Qin?”
Qin Yun shrugged helplessly, joking and complaining: “Having a girlfriend who is busy with countless important matters makes one feel truly lonely. You won’t seek pleasure with me during the beautiful nights, and your attitude is cold during the day. I will be unhappy…”
The back of Chu Xi’s hand, gripping the mouse, showed prominent blue veins—a sign of suppressed anger. She detested such flippant remarks: “President Qin, you shouldn’t talk nonsense. Your boyfriends and girlfriends are practically piled up like a mountain; I doubt there’s any room for me.”
Qin Yun was not like Qiao Bo’er, who kept her unspoken bitterness bottled up inside. She was a typical example of brazen selfishness.
In her perception, everything could be labeled with a value that could be used for her. Just like many, many years ago, she snatched up Chu Xi, who was worth far more than anticipated, without spending a cent.
The unkempt, scruffy little girl was openly priced and sold as a commodity in the black market, so cheap that the amount couldn’t even compare to the tip of the custom-made, luxury high-heeled shoes on Qin Yun’s feet.
Qin Yun reached out and hooked Chu Xi’s chin, her downward gaze one of condescension and contempt—the greatest insult to Chu Xi. It was as if silently questioning her: What right do you have to criticize my choices?
Don’t forget, I am your master.
Chu Xi’s fine eyelashes trembled. Her coldness and defiance were easily crushed by Qin Yun.
Letting out a sneer, Qin Yun inhaled the fragrance of Chu Xi’s hair near her ear, her tone no less presumptuous: “Three thousand weak waters, but I only take one scoop. If I don’t try, how will I know who I truly want? The fact is, after circling around, all the people I’ve slept with are fleeting clouds. It turns out you are the one I want the most.”
Chu Xi looked up, her eyes devoid of any emotion. She stared at Qin Yun calmly, not saying a word.
Qin Yun became even more energized, the hand cupping the beauty’s chin never intending to let go.
She made a gesture as if to taste what the lipstick was like, slowly closing the distance until their breaths were moist and mingled between their lips.
The curve of Qin Yun’s lips became increasingly sly. Chu Xi remained as steady as a mountain; she neither dodged nor accommodated.
It was a pity that the arrogant, detestable smile was ultimately given a difficult time. The one who lost, surprisingly, was Qin Yun.
Stepping back, Qin Yun remained seated on the desk edge, sighing mournfully: “I know you’re holding a grudge. You can be angry with me for a while, but you can’t be angry with me for a lifetime, can you?”
Chu Xi took a deep breath to compose herself, forcing a smile—a smile without warmth. That professional, businesslike smile was the greatest revenge against Qin Yun: “President Qin, if you’re done playing, may I continue with the work I have on hand?”
Unable to tolerate Chu Xi’s perfunctory, bloodless, smiling tiger facade, Qin Yun frowned tightly and angrily hissed: “Chu Xi.”
“Yes, President Qin.”
“It’s time for you to come home with me.”
“I apologize, but President Qin should discuss my departure with President Qiao. I cannot make this decision.”
“Don’t forget, I am your mas—” Qin Yun was vexed, but before the word ‘master’ could escape her lips, Chu Xi quickly interrupted: “President Qin, could we please not bring up old history at the company?”
Qin Yun silently picked up Chu Xi’s coffee cup. She desperately needed an action to reduce her sharp anger. There was an imprint of Chu Xi’s red lips on the rim of the cup. Qin Yun silently found the spot, pressed her soft lips onto the lipstick mark, and took a sip. Today, Chu Xi’s lipstick tasted bitter, and she didn’t like it!
Putting down the cup, Qin Yun stood up in defeat. Before leaving, she threw Chu Xi a question that was not difficult to answer: “Do you know why I named you ‘Chu Xi’? You were born to belong to me, yet you were born not to yield to me. You have achieved that. Well done.”
Qiao Bo’er stood leaning against the wall outside Chu Xi’s office, holding a document. She did not want to disturb the two’s emotional exchange, not until Qin Yun stormed out in a huff on her high heels.
Qin Yun noticed the discreet Qiao Bo’er right away. The two exchanged glances, but neither spoke a greeting. After all, it was not the right time for idle chat.
After watching Qin Yun leave, Qiao Bo’er slowly walked into the office: “Chu Xi.”
Evidently, Chu Xi had also been thoroughly defeated during the few minutes of confrontation with Qin Yun. Her expression was distracted.
“Chu Xi,” Qiao Bo’er called again, which finally drew a response from Chu Xi: “Boss, what is it?”
“Next week, I will be inspecting all branch companies. Have the person in charge of each company prepare for the meetings, and also the mid-year summary.”
“Understood. I will notify them immediately.”
“No rush for now.”
Qiao Bo’er was usually in a blazing hurry for her work arrangements to be implemented immediately, but today was an exception.
Chu Xi paused: “No rush?”
Qiao Bo’er sat down in the guest chair, indicating that she was not busy now and had something else to talk about. Chu Xi stood up and asked: “Should I prepare coffee for you first?”
“No need. Let’s just have a simple talk about you.”
Her boss had always been indifferent to her, and suddenly bringing up a discussion about herself, Chu Xi realized that Qiao Bo’er had heard their entire conversation outside the door.
As a secretary, she was Qiao Bo’er’s most capable assistant, but the relationship hidden beyond her secretary identity was difficult to speak of.
Chu Xi’s eyes instantly darkened. She was afraid that Qiao Bo’er would abandon her: “If my work is not good enough, I will reflect and correct it… I…”
“Your work is impeccable. I will not let you go.” Chu Xi’s rare panic was calmed by Qiao Bo’er’s reassurance. She then made a request: “But I hope you don’t hold any hostility towards Qin Yun. You must understand that without her, there would be no you today.”
