After Turning Into a Kitten, I Was Adopted by My Father-Figure Childhood Friend - Chapter 28
Hateful, hateful, hateful!
Why do I still have cat ears and a cat tail even after turning into a human?
Song Xingyu was wrapped in a small blanket, his fair and handsome face clouded with a very real sense of annoyance. Two pointed, mismatched ears twitched restlessly on top of his head, flickering back and forth in irritation. He sat cross-legged on the floor, clutching a tablet and resentfully biting into a cat stick, his star-bright eyes fixed intensely on the electronic screen.
Lu Jingchuan: “Xingxing?” Lu Jingchuan: “Why are you messaging me through a music app?”
“Because it is convenient, of course!” Song Xingyu thought.
Do you expect a kitten without a phone to receive a login verification code? You annoying primate with your advanced technology!
Song Xingyu was completely bare under the blanket. Even with the small cover wrapped around him, his overly bold sitting posture left the skin from his chest to his lower abdomen fully exposed. He was fuming, grumbling as he tilted his head back to finish the cat stick as if eating could solve all his sorrows. His cat tail, possessing a mind of its own, poked out from under the blanket and wagged left and right like a happy puppy.
He squeezed out the last of the cat stick in two or three bites, tossed the wrapper aside, and stared at the tablet. A ghostly light flickered in his eyes.
Xingxing: “None of your business! Do not tell my family.” Xingxing: “If you dare tell them, I will never talk to you again for the rest of my life!”
He made his grand, wicked threat and fiercely scratched his upright, pointed ears. Those two un-disappeared ears were still stuck firmly on his head.
This is just terrible!
He instinctively glanced toward the second floor and pursed his lips into a grumpy, wavy line. Song Xingyu frowned, his fingers clattering across the screen as he typed. The small blanket slipped from his shoulder, revealing a hint of rosy skin, but he merely pulled it back up with a casual shrug, imperiously commanding Lu Jingchuan to be at the beck and call of his little cat.
From now on, if the kitten says go east, he cannot go west. If the kitten wants shrimp, he cannot make fish. If the kitten wants the bed, he must move aside and respectfully welcome the Great Cat King.
Song Xingyu typed away, but before he could hit send, a message from Lu Jingchuan popped up first. He stared at the screen, reading, “You are not traveling. Why did you not tell me? I could have helped you,” and he furrowed his brows in annoyance.
Growing up together is such a hassle; the man could guess what he was doing so easily. But what did his business have to do with that guy anyway?
Lu Xiaochuan was his arch-rival! He was the most annoying of all annoying people! Song Xingyu flicked his tail. His eyes sparkled as he deleted the previous commands and typed out a new set of orders.
Xingxing: “What does it have to do with you? You nuisance! Do not try to manage me.” Xingxing: “Do not come looking for me, and do not tell my family!” Xingxing: “I am going into seclusion to write. From now on, you are only allowed to message me on this app. Even if you do, I will not reply.” Xingxing: “Be better to that genius kitten of yours! And I do not allow you to call him Youyou!”
Song Xingyu’s fingers moved like butterflies across the glass, creating a series of rapid tapping sounds. He tapped the screen, trying to think of what else to warn him about while unconsciously humming a tune. His face looked fierce, but his fluffy tail was happily arched, swaying triumphantly in the air.
Just as Song Xingyu was about to brainwash the man with his theories, he heard a sudden series of footsteps coming down from above. His eyes widened in shock. He wobbled his head, looking left and right for a place to hide. He was so frantic he almost tried to stuff himself under the sofa.
Before he could send a message telling Lu Jingchuan not to come downstairs, his vision suddenly dropped. The tablet fell to the floor with a thud. A small, mismatched calico kitten, colored like sunset clouds, sat there in a daze, shaking its pointed ears and lying sprawled on the floor.
Song Xingyu: ?
Wait, does the human transformation come with a trial period limit?
Song Xingyu could not believe it. He immediately closed his eyes and began chanting wildly in his mind, “Turn human, turn human, turn human!”
“Youyou.”
The man’s hurried footsteps stopped. A pair of hands reached down, grabbing the kitten by its armpits and lifting it up. Song Xingyu used a back leg to kick the tablet under the sofa, forced to face reality as he was hoisted into the air. His face instantly slumped into a grumpy cat expression. He unhappily used his paws to push against the approaching man, patting him away.
“You guy! Do not come near me, meow!”
The little calico shook its head vigorously, its small paws pressing against the man’s face. The man’s high nose brushed lightly against the paws, causing the kitten to scratch uncomfortably, leaving faint marks on the man’s face. The man seemed entirely unaware. He lowered his head and buried his face in the kitten’s belly. Even as the kitten patted him repeatedly, he simply let out a gentle sigh.
This behavior was highly unusual. Strictly speaking, Lu Jingchuan was not a cat lover. Before adopting the little stray, he had actually disliked animals. Even when he held the kitten, he usually did so cleanly and properly, supporting its bottom and belly like he was holding a child. Song Xingyu had never been taken advantage of like this except during bath time.
His eyes rounded. He felt the man’s hot breath on his chest. A few tiny spots he usually ignored suddenly felt very present; under the weight of the man, the soft skin sank inward.
“Meow meow meow!” You pervert!
Song Xingyu began to struggle even more fiercely, performing a tiny tap dance on Lu Jingchuan’s face with all four paws kicking wildly. After all that kicking and pushing, Lu Jingchuan finally lifted his head. His usually calm face was marked with red prints, and his hair was a mess, giving him a strangely disheveled, attractive look. It looked as if he had been out playing and gotten his face scratched by his wife.
He exhaled deeply, and after a long moment, a soft chuckle escaped his throat. “Xingxing replied to me.”
The sudden smile flickered across his face like light on water. His eyes were full of laughter, and his cold aura melted away completely. “He knows about you,” Lu Jingchuan said, gently stroking the kitten’s back and continuing his monologue. He even smiled a bit foolishly. “He saw the message I sent.”
Lu Jingchuan thought that Xingxing did not dislike Youyou and he did not completely hate him. He was absolutely certain of it.
Song Xingyu had always been like this. If inspiration struck, he would call someone in the middle of the night to climb a mountain with him; he would also toss away an umbrella and drag Lu Jingchuan to dance in the rain. Deciding to skip a trip to go into seclusion for writing was perfectly logical for him.
His life was full of romantic and free-spirited things, things Lu Jingchuan would never do and could not even imagine. Bold, vivid, bright, and uninhibited, Lu Jingchuan had so many beautiful words to describe him, but he would never speak them to anyone else. That was his treasure, his indescribable fantasy of everything good, and his hope for the future. Any words felt hollow and dull; any praise was merely a clumsy accompaniment.
Lu Jingchuan’s gaze was focused, as if he were looking through the kitten in his palms to see the person he loved. He had only wanted to adopt a kitten because of Song Xingyu. He rarely did things that were so meaningless, but if Song Xingyu liked it, then it was meaningful.
“Youyou,” the man said softly. His touch was incredibly gentle. “He likes you very much. You have to behave well. No, just stay exactly as you are now.”
Youyou was already cute enough. He was the one who actually needed to behave well. Lu Jingchuan pursed his lips. His sharp, handsome features relaxed, and his cold aura dissolved like spring wind melting snow. His voice was deep, yet it carried pure, straightforward emotion.
Song Xingyu could not understand what the man was talking about. He listened in confusion, scratching the tip of his ear with a paw and staring blankly as the man enjoyed his own happiness.
“Hateful! Has something good happened that I do not know about? It could not be just because I replied to a message, could it? Hahaha, no way!”
Song the Cat’s eyes sparkled. His tail began to wag unconsciously, and his soft chest puffed out with pride.
“Meow, meow!”
“Since you are so happy, you have to obey the Cat King from now on, you know? If the Cat King is happy, I might send you more messages.”
He raised a paw and slapped the man’s face with righteous entitlement. His fluffy tail hooked upward and swayed mischievously. He looked quite wicked. The evil calico was righteously commanding Lu Jingchuan to listen to him from now on, his tiny kitten voice drifting upward. Perhaps it was the warmth of the spring day, but there was a bright reflection in his eyes, like a pool of gold melted by the sun.
Lu Jingchuan thought the kitten was adorable. However, the kitten was still sick. He gently covered the kitten’s mouth to stop it from singing.
“Youyou, stop talking. Be careful not to let your throat get dry. You have to drink more water when you are sick, you know?”
Getting a cat to drink water is a major challenge for many owners. Lu Jingchuan had realized this the day he got the cat and had been using canned soup to trick him into drinking. Now that the kitten was sick, Lu Jingchuan thought for a moment. “Today we will have salmon-stewed rabbit hearts.”
He wanted to feed him something nutritious to boost his immunity.
“Meow!” Song Xingyu was delighted. He arrogantly raised a paw as if the Cat King were doing the man a favor, granting him permission to kiss the kitten’s paw.
Lu Jingchuan misunderstood. He placed the kitten on the sofa and shook its paw. “Good boy.”
Song the Cat was instantly furious. The grumpy Cat Emperor slapped Lu Jingchuan’s hand away and kicked the man’s palm with his back legs. Lu Jingchuan, whose status in the household was very low, endured it silently. He leaned down to reach for the tablet under the sofa. The kitten had kicked the tablet under there earlier, and Lu Jingchuan had seen it. With his long reach, he pulled it out, intending to play a cartoon for the kitten.
Last night, the kitten had been too clingy while he was looking through documents, so he had used the tablet to play an episode of Tom and Jerry to distract him. The tablet was still connected to the internet; it was a perfect time to play another episode to keep the kitten quiet.
Song the Cat had been sitting there with a grumpy face and tucked paws, but when he saw the man pull out the tablet, he turned pale with shock.
“What on earth are you doing, you big idiot? My account is still logged in! Am I about to be exposed, meow?”
