After Turning Into a Kitten, I Was Adopted by My Father-Figure Childhood Friend - Chapter 18
Several awkward notes connected into a melody, instantly transforming into an electric current that drilled straight through Song Xingyu’s pricked cat ears and into his cerebral cortex. It sent a wave of unbearable horror coursing through his entire body.
The tip of his tail went stiff, his four limbs splayed out in chaos, and a very human-like look of collapse surfaced in his amber-gold feline eyes. He looked like a beehive that had suddenly imploded, with liquefied honey-colored light overflowing from his gaze.
You, you!
Cat Song covered his muzzle and gritted his teeth. Unable to endure it any longer, he lunged forward and delivered two “Whirlwind Cat Punches” to the man, yowling in fury.
You tone-deaf fool!
Listen closely to me! It is clearly these notes, you idiot!
In his rage, Cat Song spitefully clawed out a chopstick. Although he was not yet used to carrying things in his mouth, his anger helped him overcome the hurdle. He skillfully struck a few notes on the makeshift rack of glasses. As a little cat who loved surfing the internet, he almost opened his mouth to sing along:
“Hajimi, Hajimi!”
He was now in a state of reckless abandon. Triumphantly twitching the tips of his ears, he curled his tail around another chopstick to accompany himself, briskly tapping out a string of notes. Sunlight streamed through the spacious glass windows into the kitchen. A sunset-colored kitten tapped the glasses with fascination, tiptoeing like a dancer as he moved vibrantly across the dining table. It was a scene so cute that any candid shot would be a masterpiece.
Caught between the choice of believing his cat had turned into a spirit or sending his kid to college, Lu Jingchuan honestly pulled out his phone. He recorded a long video and sent it to “Little Ancestor.”
Lu Jingchuan: [Video] Lu Jingchuan: My kitten can play music. Do you want to come see?
Song Xingyu: ?
Song Xingyu finished tapping out Hajimi with great enthusiasm. He was just about to lift his chin proudly to seek praise from Little Lu when he saw the man holding up his phone. A faint green light reflected in Lu’s deep pupils.
He was actually messaging that person again! How dare he get distracted while he was performing!
Lu Jingchuan, you have changed! You are no longer that honest, attentive listener who did not understand but still tried! This is a capital crime! Absolutely unforgivable!
The tricolor furball roared in anger. With a series of indignant meows and growls, he opened his mouth and bit the hand the man had extended. His pupils constricted into slits, the center of his eyes glowing like a raging fire. Like a provoked predator, he pinned his prey down with his paws, a low, dangerous rumble rolling from his throat.
I will bite you to death!
As the four sharp, fierce teeth pressed against his skin, Lu Jingchuan’s gaze darkened slightly. He took the opportunity to scratch the kitten’s chin. The fluffy sensation tickling his fingers created a fine, dense itch; even the stinging pain on his hand became faint and moist. Remaining calm and collected, he used his other hand to stroke the kitten from the top of its head down to the tip of its tail. The clingy tail flexibly dipped into an arc in mid-air, refusing to be touched.
Cat Song glared at the man and bit down even harder. Lu Jingchuan said thoughtfully, “Were you just playing a song?”
Cat Song’s ears immediately shot up in alert. His eyes widened. His brain, which had seemingly shrunken after turning into a cat, began to spin at high speed. The next second, the little calico flopped over on the spot, exposing a large patch of snowy-white belly. His fluffy tail swept through the air, curling around the man’s wrist coaxingly.
“Meow!” The kitten’s voice turned soft. The tender trailing note lingered in the air like sweet cotton candy, drifting innocently and cutely into the man’s ears. Cat Song kicked his four tempting pink paws in the air with a face full of innocence, looking exactly like he had no idea what the man was talking about.
Song Xingyu: [Playing Dumb]
If you have the guts, guess that I am Song Xingyu. If you do, I will stop pretending and just reveal myself! Just see if I will actually admit to it!
Cat Song held his head high, appearing innocent on the surface, but his two pointed ears cowardlily slumped into “airplane ears,” and the tip of his tail tightened around the man’s palm in a fawning gesture.
Lu Jingchuan caught the tail that was flirting with his palm. He held it loosely while tapping his phone a few times. Cat Song watched in confusion as a phone was placed down beside him. Maintaining his current pose, he twisted his body into an awkward curve and poked his head toward the screen. As Lu Jingchuan’s finger tapped, the deep resonance of a cello began to play.
It was the Prélude from Bach’s Cello Suites. Within the rigorous classical score, free-spirited notes leaped from the staff to harmonize on the strings. Cat Song flicked his ears in confusion. The Prélude transitioned into the soothing The Swan. The man and the cat listened dumbly for two minutes before realizing it was not the music app switching tracks; it was a phone call coming into Lu Jingchuan’s phone.
Lu Jingchuan gave the kitten’s back a reassuring stroke and answered the call.
“This is Lu Jingchuan. Please speak.”
“This is Lu Yan.” The cold voice had no fluctuations in tone; it was used purely for statement.
However, those four short words made Song Xingyu’s ears perk up instantly. Lu Jingchuan’s expression also turned serious, and he instinctively began to straighten his collar and hair.
“Father.”
“This Saturday at 7:00 PM, we have a family dinner. Ms. Qi has replied that she will arrive on time,” Lu Yan stated coldly. He then asked politely, “And you?”
Lu Jingchuan responded steadily, “I have no problem, Father. It has been added to my daily schedule.”
“I will have the auntie prepare an extra portion of strawberry soufflé.”
Lu Jingchuan replied, “Please do not do that. Xingxing is traveling out of town and has no plans to visit you with me. However, I will be bringing another family member. Please have the auntie prepare a portion of poached shrimp.”
“Which one?”
“A certain Mr. Cat.”
“Very well.” Mr. Lu logged the item without objection, then spoke as if issuing a mission. “After you officially graduate, which is to say after your online thesis defense in June, I will arrange for you to enter the company. Before then, I need you to familiarize yourself with the business. There are several contracts that need signing; I have arranged for you to handle them for experience. Your thoughts?”
“I have no problem, Father.”
“My assistant will send the documents to your email later. If you have questions, please email them during working hours.”
Lu Jingchuan replied in a businesslike manner, “Understood.”
The two polite individuals synchronized information regarding their recent status and follow-up work content. By the time the call ended, Song Xingyu was so bored he could not help but yawn. He did not even need to listen to the call to know what kind of robotic dialogue it would be. Since childhood, Little Lu had been excessively formal with his father. The way they spoke had less emotion than when Song Xingyu chatted with the housekeeper.
Song Xingyu had once felt that the reason Lu Jingchuan became such a jerk was definitely due to heredity. He was truly bored to the point of drowsiness. His mouth opened wide in a yawn and his eyes squinted, only to snap back into alert when he met the man’s downward gaze.
His pointed ears were manually pressed down as Lu Jingchuan opened the app again. “You-You, why don’t you learn this?”
Cat Song was instantly jolted awake from his sleepiness. He listened to the Cello Suites in disbelief, then looked at Lu Jingchuan with eyes full of accusations of maltreatment.
You are actually making a little kitten learn Cello Suites! Do you think my kitten paws can play the cello? You might as well just expose my identity!
Grumbling, Cat Song unceremoniously slapped the phone off the counter. He jumped down from the table, looking up to meow his complaints before turning to leave with his tail held high.
Why is Lu Jingchuan’s phone full of recordings of me playing the cello? It has been four years. Even a dog would have improved after playing for four years, yet Lu Jingchuan is still listening to my dark history from four years ago. He clearly harbors a grudge. I will have to find a way to delete them all one day.
Cat Song rubbed a paw against his chin and narrowed his eyes, revealing an evil predator expression. The cat meowed and walked away, but halfway there, he remembered his canned meat. He fiercely dashed back, gave the man a kick, and scrambled up the cabinet to jump onto the counter.
“Meow!” The kitten patted the table and lifted his chin, signaling for the canned food to be served immediately.
A sunset-colored blush stained both sides of his face. His whiskers twitched, and he could not hide his haughty, triumphant expression. He was daring, willful, and arrogantly cute. He was just like Xingxing.
Thinking of Xingxing, Lu Jingchuan’s temper vanished instantly. He acted as a tireless servant, putting the cooled meat into a dish and mashing it up. The dish was a strawberry plate the kitten had personally chosen. Inside the beautiful porcelain saucer was an illustration of a little rabbit playing the cello. When paired with a handmade blend of rabbit heart, chicken, salmon, and fish oil prepared by Lu Jingchuan, the aroma immediately made Song Xingyu meow with joy.
He was a picky eater; he wanted his food warm, his cat treats fed directly to his mouth, and especially his homemade canned food handled just so. Lu Jingchuan used a spoon to shape the meat into a little hill, tucking in some fruit and dried meat, barely managing to arrange a pretty cat bowl. Only then did Cat Song deign to lower his head. He daintily licked the meat paste and was soon eating so hard he could not lift his head.
This is too delicious!
The more Cat Song ate, the better it tasted. He could not help but prop his two front paws on the plate. As he ate, his round bottom unconsciously arched upward, and his tail wagged flexibly in the air.
I eat, eat, eat!
Splat!
Cat Song successfully tumbled into the plate. As if failing to process what happened, he confusedly licked his lips. His pink nose was wet and shiny, and his beautiful amber eyes were full of surprise and bewilderment. He did not seem to understand what had just occurred.
He turned into a dirty little cat again. Lu Jingchuan, holding his phone to take pictures, could not help but poke the kitten’s little head before using a towel to wipe his face. The dirty little cat took the chance to glance at the phone screen. Seeing that “Little Ancestor” still had not replied to the message, he let out a disdainful snort from his nose.
Damnable Lu Jingchuan! Did you go abroad to study or to be a simp in love? I see you are living quite comfortably abroad and are not busy at all. You liar! I, the Cat Hero, am not to be messed with. I will give you what is coming to you tonight! Using me to fish for a wife? You are guaranteed to catch nothing!
