After Transmigrating to Become Lady Skylark - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Roppongi district.
A sonic boom erupted. A Ferrari sports car, more brilliant than the midday sun, wove through the crowded traffic like a fish, eventually coming to a halt at the head of a jam. Drivers all around turned to stare, their gazes envious as they fell on the car’s cool lines, and then, through the tinted glass, on the two graceful figures inside.
The sun was too bright, reflecting off the bright red hood. Jin Chaoyan pushed up her sunglasses and turned to ask Chiyana beside her, “How long does a repaint usually take? I want this car to be pink.”
After signing the customization order at the yacht club that morning, she saw a Porsche parked in the open-air lot and was suddenly seized with the desire to drive a sports car. The impulse came fast, and with her all-capable butler Chiyana by her side, it took less than an hour to secure someone else’s slot, complete the paperwork, and drive the car out. She was eager to hit the road—
But because the original owner didn’t have a driver’s license, she was stuck in the passenger seat, begrudgingly appreciating her new car’s charm.
Chiyana answered with a smile, “If all goes well, it should be done before Madam gets her driver’s license.”
Ugh, don’t mention the driver’s license again!
Jin Chaoyan’s fingers clutched the seatbelt. Her cheeks puffed out like a pufferfish, and she sulked for a moment before cheering herself up and bringing up the events of the auction. “Do all the rich people in Tokyo really love collecting gemstones?”
At the auction house, she had first bid on a beautiful purple gemstone ring for women, then bought a few other small trinkets. She thought about bidding on one of the final gems—some with excellent color and clarity—to give to her corporate husband. But she never got a chance to snag a bargain. Every single gem sold for several times, even ten times, its starting price.
She was about to try again, but Chiyana stopped her, explaining that the prices were severely inflated and that unless she absolutely loved them, she should wait for another opportunity.
So she wisely saved herself a massive sum and was now asking, out of curiosity.
“I haven’t heard any such news…” Chiyana had just finished speaking when her phone rang. Jin Chaoyan watched her glance at it, then say to her again, “We have some intel, Madam. The ones bidding on the gems at the auction today were some local underground black organizations.”
Oh, okay, can’t mess with them.
She quickly made another decision. “How about you find someone to modify the gem I bought earlier and put it on a men’s ring setting?”
“I’ll take care of it, Madam.”
It was a rare outing, and Chiyana seemed to have noticed that Jin Chaoyan’s social inclinations didn’t lie with afternoon tea among rich wives. They were now heading to the Imperial Theatre, where she planned to take her to see a circus troupe’s tour performance in Tokyo.
“I heard that a few decades ago, this troupe had an incredibly talented actor who also worked as a stunt double for famous movie stars. He was called ‘the man who returned from hell’—there was no acrobatic feat too difficult for him…”
Jin Chaoyan listened to the exaggerated description and the chuunibyou nickname, finding it hard to imagine. But that didn’t stop her from feeling excited about Chiyana’s plans. She even enthusiastically suggested, “Okay, then after the acrobatics, we’ll grab dinner and then go check out the bar district?”
Her all-capable butler’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, as if to stop her, but after meeting her eager gaze, she finally said, “The underground organizations in Tokyo have been a bit active these past few days. If Madam is determined to go to those places, just to be safe, would you mind if I contacted a few bodyguards?”
Jin Chaoyan didn’t mind in the slightest and agreed immediately. “Whatever you want. I’m just curious to see what it’s like.” After all, the bar district was a feature of Ginza.
…
Late night, 11:45 p.m.
At Haneda International Airport, a private jet slowly taxied into its designated parking area. The pilot, Kusakabe Tetsuya, took off his headphones and let out a sigh of relief. He picked up his phone, about to ask Chiyana for an update on the Madam—but then quickly got up and opened the cockpit door, hurrying outside.
“Mr. Kyoya, we have the latest news. A batch of Boxes that we’ve been closely monitoring have secretly flowed into Tokyo’s underground organizations… Our intelligence system has captured footage of these organizations using their Rings and Boxes in a fight.”
Hibari Kyoya put down the thin medical report in his hand. His expression, previously cold and detached from the long, boring journey, was like that of a world-weary beauty from an ancient painting.
Now, hearing the news, a flash of interest sparked in the phoenix eyes beneath the strands of hair on his forehead.
“Oh?”
He rose from his comfortable, soft seat. His perfectly tailored suit showed no wrinkles. He spoke unhurriedly: “For them to just happen to appear in Japan at this time… Never mind. It doesn’t matter who’s behind this. I hope this group of clueless herbivores will be enough to give me a decent warm-up tonight.”
As he finished speaking, he descended the boarding stairs. His voice held a hint of a laugh, but it was enough to make a small bird, which had flown out of the cabin and was about to land on his shoulder, instantly change direction and fly into the night sky.
A few minutes earlier.
Ginza bar district.
The sound of shattering glass was followed by a scream. People near the bar and lounge on the first floor were startled and looked toward the source of the noise. When they saw a person on the ground engulfed in flames, screams of terror erupted, and every exit was clogged with panicked guests frantically trying to escape.
On the second-floor private room.
Jin Chaoyan, who had specifically chosen a laid-back bar with a good live band and even brought bodyguards, saw the scene downstairs through the wide glass and fell silent for a moment.
“Madam, all the main exits are crowded with people. For your safety, we should take the back door through the staff entrance.”
Chiyana, who had just finished a call with the bar manager, put down her phone and arranged things at a rapid pace. The bodyguards, who had been waiting outside the room, had already rushed in and now stood in a tight perimeter around Jin Chaoyan, watching the floor below with vigilance.
“Okay,” Jin Chaoyan raised a hand to rub her nose. She had clearly overestimated the security of the bar district. Before leaving, she wanted to see what had happened to the person on fire downstairs, but Chiyana quickly blocked her view. She obediently turned away. “Let’s go home now.”
After she left with the bodyguards, Chiyana looked back at the floor below.
The spot where the person had been ignited was now just a patch of scorched red. Bones and blood had completely vanished, as if they had evaporated from the face of the earth.
A chill ran down Chiyana’s spine. She didn’t dare to look again, and quickly followed the others toward the staff safety exit.
“Creek.”
The back door of the bar was pushed open. A bodyguard went out first to check. Finding the alleyway empty, he let out a subtle sigh of relief and ushered Jin Chaoyan out.
After she emerged, the door continued to open, letting out staff members or other wealthy individuals in designer clothes who had also come out for a night on the town with bodyguards.
The Ferrari was parked too far away, and the bodyguards’ car couldn’t fit everyone. They had planned to walk out of the alley and take a detour, but there were so many disturbances around them that it seemed the entire street was unsafe. Their detour only led them further away.
Jin Chaoyan was held tightly by Chiyana. She looked at a figure flying through the air above them and saw that the person’s shoes were shooting flames like jets. A sense of confusion about this era’s technological development washed over her. She belatedly asked:
“Chiyana, should we call the police?”
She wondered if the person who was knocked into the bar would be okay. Maybe they could still get to the emergency room in time.
“Call the police? I think I heard someone say they’re going to call the police?”
A malicious, threatening voice came from the air. The bodyguard next to Jin Chaoyan reacted faster than she did. He pulled out a weapon from his bulky waistband and aimed it at the figure in the air. He had just started to yell a warning when a bullet from midair pierced through his shoulder blade.
Chiyana’s gasp was right next to her.
Jin Chaoyan finally got a clear look at the person hovering in midair. She saw him raise his smoking weapon again, aiming it at another bodyguard in front of her. Time seemed to stretch on forever—
“Bang!”
It wasn’t the sound of a bullet being fired. It was another figure flying through the air, crashing directly into the person about to shoot. The force of the blow was too strong, and both of them fell, smashing through the display window of a nearby shop.
“Rumble!”
Another loud crash!
The wall of the alleyway collapsed, and plumes of smoke and dust billowed out.
Jin Chaoyan, startled, instinctively looked toward the source of the new noise. Through the smoke and dust, she vaguely saw a tall figure put his arm down.
“This boring game of hide-and-seek is over. Have you decided who will tell me exactly where you got that Box from?”
The voice was exceptionally pleasant, a stark contrast to the tense and terrifying atmosphere. Its casual tone made the nerves of those listening unconsciously relax.
That is, until the figure emerging from the thick smoke revealed his true face—
Jin Chaoyan met a pair of sharp, gray-blue phoenix eyes, like a blade under moonlight. In that instant, she felt a shiver rise from the depths of her soul. Her recently relaxed nerves almost snapped from the tension!
She felt like she was being stared down by a hunting leopard in the dead of night. Just one murderous look was enough to trigger her survival instincts, making every cell in her body scream, “Danger! Run!”
Her breath hitched, and she was frozen in place by that one look. All around her, the bodyguards’ instincts for retaliation were checked, and they lowered their weapons, bowing respectfully to the man who had appeared: “Mr. Hibari.”
“Mr. Hibari…”
Chiyana subconsciously repeated the name, finally recognizing who this incredibly dangerous person was, and immediately felt a sense of relief.
Only Jin Chaoyan stared blankly at the man. Her gaze moved from his soft yet cold face, to his dark purple shirt and black suit, and finally settled on the Tonfas he held in his right hand. The strange eye color of the original owner, the weird flame-shooting people she had just seen, and the untraceable “Disciplinary Committee Group” information flooded her mind.
Everything came together in a whispered murmur:
“…Hibari Kyoya?”
She had transmigrated into an anime world?
Her legendary corporate husband was Hibari Kyoya from Reborn!?
The man, whose name had been uttered, didn’t miss the intense astonishment in her eyes. He simply raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over her silver-glistening heels, her stylish white and blue plaid minidress, and her asymmetrical jacket that revealed the round curve of her shoulder.
Finally, his eyes moved up and settled on her face, which had a completely different demeanor from the timid and weak one he had known before.
“Jin Chaoyan.”
He narrowed his eyes, enunciating her name word by word. It was as if he hadn’t expected her to give him such a big surprise upon their reunion.
