- Chapter 15 - The Dragon-Slaying Protagonist
Two figures emerged from the shadows. One was the eighteen-year-old Ji Yu, and beside him followed a twenty-six-year-old man.
“Senior Brother Lu, why are you here?” Ji Yu asked, looking at Lu Shi’an with feigned surprise.
Ignoring Ji Yu, Lu Shi’an turned his gaze to the man beside him. “Was that your doing just now?” His tone was questioning, but his voice held a note of certainty. Before the man could respond, a burst of sword energy flew toward the man’s chest. The man was too slow to dodge, and the energy knocked him backward, leaving a deep gash across his chest.
“Lin Tian! Are you alright?” Ji Yu rushed to the man’s side, hurriedly feeding him a medicinal pill, his voice laced with anxiety. He then looked at Lu Shi’an with wounded eyes, sobbing, “Senior Brother Lu, how could you hurt someone without reason?”
Ning Yuzhao immediately retorted, “Without reason? You were the ones who attacked first! If Senior Brother had not pulled me aside, the one lying on the ground right now would be me!” Ning Yuzhao glared at the pair, silently cursing Ji Yu for being like a haunting spirit that refused to vanish.
Ji Yu was left speechless. His eyes flickered, but he continued to argue, “But you were not hurt, were you? Besides, we did not see clearly that it was you.”
Even Xiao Heng, who had been silently watching from the side, could not hold back any longer. He tapped his folding fan against his palm and sneered, “Yuzhao was not hurt, but that is only because Brother Lu pulled him away in time. I saw that the sword energy was intended to take Yuzhao’s life. Furthermore, what do you mean by ‘we did not see clearly’? Does that mean it is acceptable to kill anyone as long as you do not know who they are?” Xiao Heng narrowed his eyes, a look of displeasure crossing his face.
Their sharp retorts silenced Ji Yu completely.
Lu Shi’an, however, was observing the man. Is this the protagonist? He looked utterly unremarkable. He appeared to have the cultivation of a Golden Core stage, but in reality, he seemed to lack even the power of a peak Foundation Establishment cultivator. While Lu Shi’an’s sword strike had been sudden, dodging it should not have been impossible. Yet, the man had shown zero ability to react. Lu Shi’an was deeply curious about how the man had acquired his cultivation.
After the pill stopped his bleeding, Lin Tian looked at Lu Shi’an with venomous eyes. “I will remember this grudge. I will not let you off.”
Lu Shi’an chuckled inwardly. Is this the protagonist? What makes him think he can take revenge on me? Based on a cultivation level achieved through unknown means? Or his heaven-defying luck? Since they were already enemies, Lu Shi’an did not intend to sit by and let him grow in power. He also had no intention of handing over the opportunities mentioned in the book; he refused to believe he could not outmaneuver the protagonist.
Ji Yu stared at the divine beast egg, the treasure he had pursued for so long, now resting obediently in Ning Yuzhao’s arms, and a fire of rage ignited in his heart. However, seeing Lin Tian injured and knowing he was no match for the group, he suppressed his anger. With a soft, pleading voice, he said to Ning Yuzhao, “Junior Brother Ning, could you return this egg to me? I discovered it first.”
Ning Yuzhao frowned, about to retort, but Xiao Heng beat him to it. “Hmph, why should we give it to you? Just because you found it first? Do not forget that in the Nether Secret Realm, all treasures belong to the strong. Besides, you haven’t even successfully contracted it!”
Lu Shi’an had no desire to continue entanglement with these two; he was eager to seek out the protagonist’s opportunities. He threatened bluntly, “If I am not mistaken, you two have been chasing this egg, but it now rests quietly in Yuzhao’s arms. This means the egg has no intention of recognizing you as its master. If you truly wish to steal it, why don’t you try?” He pointed his sword toward them.
Ji Yu and Lin Tian’s expressions turned ugly, but they realized they were outmatched. They swallowed their hatred. Lin Tian glared at Lu Shi’an, grinding his teeth, “Do not look down on people today, for things may change tomorrow. I will never let you off!” They left shortly after.
Once they were gone, Ning Yuzhao handed the egg to Lu Shi’an, his eyes sparkling. “Senior Brother, put it away!” Since Ning Yuzhao did not have a personal storage space and the egg had not hatched, it could not be stored in his spiritual sense. The egg was too conspicuous to carry openly, so Lu Shi’an tucked it into his internal space without refusal.
Seeing Lu Shi’an store a living creature into his space, Xiao Heng realized that his friend must have encountered a massive opportunity. He felt no jealousy; rather, he admired Lu Shi’an even more for exposing such a secret without hesitation. Lu Shi’an was not being careless; he wished to build a genuine friendship, which required sincerity. If he had misjudged Xiao Heng, he was confident he could dispose of him if necessary.
“We should leave this place quickly. The commotion just now may have attracted other cultivators,” Lu Shi’an analyzed calmly.
“Agreed, let us leave,” Ning Yuzhao nodded.
“Brother Lin, are you feeling better now? It is all my fault. If I had not insisted on chasing that egg, you would not have been hurt,” Ji Yu said, sobbing in Lin Tian’s arms like a string of broken pearls.
Seeing his beloved in tears, Lin Tian held him tightly, soothing him, “Little Yu, it is not your fault. It was those people being aggressive. That egg clearly belonged to you. Do not worry; I will take it back. I will make them pay a thousand times over for the injury I suffered today!”
Ji Yu did not truly care for Lin Tian. If not for the fact that he dreamt Lin Tian would become a powerhouse in the future, he would never have deigned to coddle such an ordinary man. However, his dreams had become less detailed lately; he only knew Lin Tian would obtain a major opportunity here, but not what it was. When the dream ended, he had quickly sought out Lin Tian, only to find him mediocre—plain in appearance and weak in strength, more useless than even Mu Leng!
He had intended to show him some affection to secure his loyalty once Lin Tian became powerful, but after returning to the sect, Mu Leng had started distancing himself, leaving Ji Yu with no one else to accompany him to the Nether Secret Realm but Lin Tian. Thinking of this, he felt a surge of disgust. This Lin Tian is a mere Golden Core waste, yet he dares to covet me!
He looked up at Lin Tian, soft and yielding. “Brother Lin, I believe you will be even more powerful than Lu Shi’an one day.” He gave Lin Tian a look that was both shy and inviting. Feeling affirmed by his beloved, Lin Tian was moved and kissed Ji Yu deeply. Ji Yu endured the revulsion, engaging in the deep kiss.
