- Chapter 13 - Accepting Sect Missions
Since they were going to train in the Nether Secret Realm, Lu Shi’an planned to accept a few sect missions first. The sect maintained an Internal Affairs Hall where numerous tasks were posted. Disciples could earn contribution points by completing these missions, which could then be exchanged for resources. While inner disciples naturally lacked for nothing, their greater privileges came with heavier responsibilities; they were required to earn thirty thousand contribution points annually. Lu Shi’an had been in seclusion for the past six years, so he had had no opportunity to complete any tasks.
Lu Shi’an arrived at the mission hall, which was bustling with activity. The task board was divided into four tiers: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Hell. The higher the tier, the greater the difficulty and the reward in contribution points. Easy and Medium tasks were mostly taken by outer disciples, while Hard and Hell missions were generally the domain of inner and inner-circle disciples.
Lu Shi’an approached the board for Hard and Hell tasks. After carefully reviewing the list, he ultimately selected three Hard-level beast-slaying missions and one Hell-level mission to gather plants from the depths of the Nether Secret Realm.
Disciples nearby, noticing someone selecting a Hell-level task, looked up to see which big shot was so confident. Upon realizing it was their Senior Brother Lu, they immediately bowed respectfully, “Greetings, Senior Brother!” This greeting drew the attention of everyone else, and the room was soon filled with respectful salutations.
Lu Shi’an nodded calmly and was about to leave when his path was blocked.
“Junior Brother Lu! Wait a moment!”
Lu Shi’an turned at the sound to see Su Boyun and Luo Chuan hurrying toward him. He stopped and looked at them with curiosity.
“Greetings, Senior Brother Su, Senior Brother Luo.”
The two were Su Boyun, whom he had saved in the Phantom Moon Forest six years ago, and Luo Chuan, the eldest disciple of Uncle Chaofan.
Seeing Lu Shi’an’s confusion, Luo Chuan scratched his head and smiled honestly, “Junior Brother Lu, Boyun and I have accepted a mission to slay demonic beasts in the shallow areas of the Nether Secret Realm. Seeing that you are also headed there, would you be interested in traveling together?”
Lu Shi’an realized their intention. Both senior brothers had recently advanced to the late Golden Core stage, so it was no surprise they dared to venture into the Nether Secret Realm. He nodded with a smile, “Of course. When do you plan to depart?”
He knew that traveling with them would provide mutual support and increase their safety. Moreover, with his own cultivation at the half-step Nascent Soul stage, he was more than capable of handling himself.
Su Boyun replied without hesitation, “We are fully prepared and can leave at any time.”
Lu Shi’an had planned to set off immediately after picking up his missions, so he replied, “Then let us depart now. I will go back to call Yuzhao, and we can meet at the sect gate.”
“Very well, we will wait for you at the gate,” Su Boyun agreed.
After parting ways, Lu Shi’an picked up Ning Yuzhao, met the others at the gate, and set off. Once they reached the foot of the mountain, Lu Shi’an performed a hand seal, summoned his spirit boat, and brought Ning Yuzhao and the others aboard to fly toward the Nether Secret Realm.
Along the way, Ning Yuzhao looked around with excitement, brimming with curiosity about their destination. He bombarded Lu Shi’an with questions, which Lu Shi’an answered patiently. Soon, they arrived at the entrance of the Nether Secret Realm.
Many cultivators had already gathered there to seek treasures. Lu Shi’an, Ning Yuzhao, and the others kept a low profile as they mingled with the crowd, avoiding unnecessary attention. The secret realm had not yet opened, and a mysterious aura hung around the entrance, sending a chill down everyone’s spines. Ning Yuzhao shivered involuntarily and hugged Lu Shi’an’s arm tightly.
The entrance was packed with cultivators. The Nether Secret Realm opened only once every thirty years, attracting a vast number of people. Some looked for precious herbs, some explored secrets, and others sought to challenge themselves. Everyone had their own agenda.
“Junior Brother Lu?” A voice came from behind. Lu Shi’an turned to see Yun Sheng looking at him with surprise.
He greeted him with a smile, “Brother Yun.”
“Junior Brother Lu, I did not expect it to really be you. I have not seen you since we parted six years ago.”
Yun Sheng had tried to visit Lu Shi’an at the Xuantian Sect several times, but Lu Shi’an had been in seclusion every time. He had assumed Lu Shi’an would not come to the Nether Secret Realm, so seeing a back profile so similar to the one he remembered was a pleasant surprise.
After Lu Shi’an explained his long seclusion, he introduced Luo Chuan, and the two sides exchanged greetings.
“Junior Brother Lu, Senior Brothers, please take care of us if we run into each other in the realm.” Yun Sheng had just reached the late Golden Core stage, only to realize he still could not perceive Lu Shi’an’s cultivation level, confirming that Lu Shi’an had broken through yet again.
Ning Yuzhao pouted when Yun Sheng skipped over him in the greetings, but he did not mind; he knew his cultivation was the lowest.
As they spoke, the realm opened. Ignoring further pleasantries, they rushed inside. Fearing the realm might separate him from Ning Yuzhao, Lu Shi’an grabbed his hand and urged, “Yuzhao, stay close to me.”
Ning Yuzhao nodded to show he understood.
The moment they entered, a flash of white light blinded them. In the blink of an eye, Lu Shi’an and Ning Yuzhao were transported into the realm. It was filled with thick fog that severely limited their vision. Lu Shi’an held Ning Yuzhao’s hand and proceeded cautiously, remaining vigilant. Suddenly, a massive demonic beast charged out of the fog. Lu Shi’an quickly cast a spell, sending a bolt of lightning that caused significant damage to the beast. Ning Yuzhao followed up with a freezing force, locking the beast’s feet in place.
Lu Shi’an used his sword as a conduit to channel another lightning attack, assisted by Ning Yuzhao, and after a fierce battle, they finally killed the beast. They quickly skinned the creature and removed all valuable parts for their storage rings.
Ning Yuzhao handed a monster core to Lu Shi’an. “Senior Brother, look! A Level 6 monster core.”
Lu Shi’an took the core, surprised that they had encountered a Level 6 beast so soon after entering. It seemed the Nether Secret Realm was more dangerous than he had imagined. He turned to Ning Yuzhao with a grave expression, “Yuzhao, this place is more treacherous than I anticipated. From now on, you must stay within half a meter of me.”
Seeing his senior brother’s serious demeanor, Ning Yuzhao did not dare to take the realm lightly and nodded solemnly.
