- Chapter 38 - Together for a Lifetime
Chen Yanzhi felt deeply guilty for overlooking Fu Tingyue. Even though Fu Tingyue repeatedly comforted him, saying it was fine and that he was already doing a great job, Chen Yanzhi could not stop blaming himself.
He felt irresponsible. He was the one who suggested they start dating, yet he was not doing it properly and had failed to consider Fu Tingyue’s feelings.
Fu Tingyue cupped Chen Yanzhi’s face, gently wiping away his tears. “Alright, your eyes are already swollen. I did not feel unhappy. I truly have been busy with work lately. I originally planned to ask you if I could go on a trip with you once I finished today, but I did not expect you to come looking for me so suddenly.”
Hearing Fu Tingyue’s voice only made Chen Yanzhi’s tears flow faster. He grabbed Fu Tingyue’s arm and said between sobs, “I was just discussing which cities to visit with Xiaobai. Then he suddenly asked if you were coming, and I realized I had never even asked you. I am sorry. I did not do well.”
Fu Tingyue was busy rushing through work just to spend time with him, while his own head was full of friends. He had not included Fu Tingyue in his plans at all. He felt like a complete jerk.
Fu Tingyue kissed away Chen Yanzhi’s tears while offering comfort. “You have already done very well. You are just not used to it yet. If you truly did not care about me, you would not have appeared here. Our Zhizhi is a very qualified boyfriend. I am very satisfied.”
The moment he decided to date Chen Yanzhi, he had already anticipated these situations. Chen Yanzhi had a carefree personality, and since they had transitioned so suddenly from friends to lovers, he needed time to adapt and process things. Fu Tingyue did not think anything was wrong with that.
The fact that Chen Yanzhi could accept him and love him already made him incredibly happy. Everything else could be taken slowly.
Chen Yanzhi pouted, his tears falling even harder. “You should scold me. Do not be so gentle. It just makes me feel more guilty.”
“My little crybaby,” Fu Tingyue said, cupping Chen Yanzhi’s face. He felt both heartbroken and found him adorable. “How could I bear to scold you? I want to pamper you to the heavens. Our Zhizhi is only nineteen; you are still a kid. I cannot yell or be mean; I have to coax you properly. That way, you will never leave me and will stay by my side forever.”
Chen Yanzhi licked the tears from his lips and said muffledly, “I am a grown man. Do not use such sappy words on me. I will not leave you. It is normal for couples to argue. You can get angry with me, otherwise, if you keep everything bottled up inside, you will make yourself sick.”
Fu Tingyue corrected him, “Little boy.”
Chen Yanzhi sniffled. He looked up at Fu Tingyue with large, tear-drenched eyes and spoke with a serious expression. “Teach me. I will learn well and try my best to be a proper boyfriend. I will not ignore your feelings again.”
He could do it.
“It is okay. If I truly am unhappy, I will definitely tell you. These things are not a big deal to me. You are being too sensitive,” Fu Tingyue said. He leaned down to peck Chen Yanzhi’s moist lips. “Zhizhi, you care about me too much.”
Chen Yanzhi’s heart felt tight. Of course he cared about Fu Tingyue. It was just that he had not fully shifted his mindset yet and had still been treating Fu Tingyue as a friend.
Fu Tingyue kissed Chen Yanzhi’s lips intermittently to comfort him. “It is fine. These are small matters; do not take them to heart. You have already done a great job.”
Chen Yanzhi wrapped his arms around Fu Tingyue’s neck and took the initiative to kiss him back. “I will adapt as quickly as possible. I will treat you as my boyfriend and consider things from your perspective.”
Fu Tingyue gently patted Chen Yanzhi’s back, swaying slightly as if soothing a child. “Good. It is fine to take it slow. I can wait.”
Chen Yanzhi buried his face in the crook of Fu Tingyue’s neck and murmured, “Fu Tingyue, you are so good.”
Fu Tingyue lowered his head to kiss the tip of his ear. “Zhizhi is also very good.”
Chen Yanzhi argued childishly, “You are the best.”
Fu Tingyue refused to back down. “In my heart, I think you are better.”
Chen Yanzhi suddenly confessed, “Fu Tingyue, I like you.”
Fu Tingyue was stunned for a moment, then smiled. “I like you very much too.”
The boy was feeling guilty and trying to make it up to him this way. He was a bit silly, but very cute.
The two stayed in the lounge for nearly two hours. Once Chen Yanzhi’s emotions had stabilized, Fu Tingyue helped him wash his face. He waited until the swelling in his eyes had subsided slightly before taking him away.
However, Chen Yanzhi was too embarrassed to be seen. He hid his face in his scarf and draped Fu Tingyue’s overcoat over himself while being carried. He had no choice; Fu Tingyue’s coat was too big, and if he walked himself, he would trip on the hem.
Chen Yanzhi felt he was becoming increasingly delicate. He figured it might be a result of differentiating into an Omega; he used to not be like this.
His gaze fell on Fu Tingyue’s superior jawline, and he sighed inwardly.
Alright, it actually had nothing to do with being an Omega. It was just that Fu Tingyue had become his boyfriend, and he was more dependent on him than before.
Knowing Chen Yanzhi was in a bit of a mood, Fu Tingyue took him to a restaurant for dinner. Afterward, they went to see a movie. Because they were in a rush and there were no other screenings, they ended up watching a horror movie.
By the time they left the theater, Chen Yanzhi’s legs were weak and his face was pale.
Fu Tingyue supported him and asked, “Are you alright?”
There were many people in the theater, and since Chen Yanzhi was thin-skinned, he would not let Fu Tingyue carry him. Fu Tingyue had to support him while also holding up the hem of the oversized coat.
Chen Yanzhi’s legs were shaking, but he tried to act calm. His voice, however, trembled uncontrollably. “I… I am fine. I just thought the scenes were too disgusting.”
In reality, the film was not particularly bloody; it was that bone-chilling, eerie kind of horror. It was terrifying. He was definitely going to have nightmares tonight.
Fu Tingyue helped Chen Yanzhi sit on an empty chair in the hallway, looking full of self-reproach. “I am sorry. It is my fault for not checking the content of the movie beforehand.”
Chen Yanzhi took a deep breath and waved it off dismissively. “No need to apologize. I am very brave. I am not scared at all.”
Fu Tingyue suppressed a smile and said, “But I am a bit frightened.”
“Huh?” Chen Yanzhi turned to look at him. He indeed saw a flicker of fear hidden in Fu Tingyue’s eyes, as if the man were too embarrassed to show it. He reached out and draped an arm over Fu Tingyue’s shoulder, letting the man lean against him. “It is okay. It is all fake. No need to be afraid.”
Seeing Chen Yanzhi calm down, Fu Tingyue continued his performance. “It was too scary. I feel like I will have nightmares tonight.”
Chen Yanzhi forgot his own fear and quickly patted Fu Tingyue’s shoulder to comfort him. “It is okay, it is okay. I am here. I will protect you.”
Fu Tingyue kept saying he was afraid, so Chen Yanzhi had no choice but to cup the man’s face and give him two kisses to comfort him.
Chen Yanzhi held Fu Tingyue’s face with concern. “Do you feel better? Your face is a bit cold.”
Fu Tingyue placed his hand over Chen Yanzhi’s, putting on a look of extreme fear. “I am still a little scared.”
Chen Yanzhi said with a face full of pity, “Let us go home. You gave your coat to me, you must be very cold.”
Even though Fu Tingyue was a top Alpha and not afraid of the cold, Chen Yanzhi felt bad for him.
“Alright, let us go home.” Fu Tingyue stood up and pulled Chen Yanzhi up, putting an arm around him as they walked out of the theater.
With Fu Tingyue’s distraction, Chen Yanzhi actually stopped feeling afraid. It must have been that Fu Tingyue triggered his protective instincts, causing him to forget his fear.
Yes, I am a reasonably qualified boyfriend, he thought. Chen Yanzhi could not help but straighten his chest and lift his chin slightly, his expression carrying a hint of pride.
After getting into the car, Chen Yanzhi took off his scarf. Clad in Fu Tingyue’s jacket, he climbed onto the man’s lap with all fours and hugged Fu Tingyue’s neck intimately.
Fu Tingyue naturally put an arm around Chen Yanzhi’s waist while the other supported his back. “Is your mood a little better?”
Chen Yanzhi nodded. He looked at Fu Tingyue with bright eyes, a smile hanging on the corner of his mouth. Clearly, he was no longer afraid.
Fu Tingyue rubbed Chen Yanzhi’s lips with his thumb, his eyes full of laughter. “Why are you so happy?”
Chen Yanzhi grabbed Fu Tingyue’s hand and gave the palm a kiss. He asked with a face full of anticipation, “Are you happy dating me?”
The soft kiss brushed across his palm, light and fleeting, carrying a slight itch that made his heart tremble. Fu Tingyue curled his fingers and looked into Chen Yanzhi’s beautiful eyes, nodding. “I am happy.”
Nothing could make him happier than being with Chen Yanzhi.
The smile on Chen Yanzhi’s lips widened visibly. “Then do you think I am a bit more qualified now?”
Fu Tingyue smiled and cupped Chen Yanzhi’s face, leaning down to kiss his lips. “There is no such thing as qualified or unqualified. In my heart, you are always the best. No one can compare to you.”
Chen Yanzhi blinked dazeedly, then buried his head in Fu Tingyue’s chest and nuzzled around. “You are way too good with words.”
He rarely acted like this. Fu Tingyue was stunned for a moment before holding Chen Yanzhi tight to keep him from falling, his face filled with smiles. They were becoming more and more intimate, and Chen Yanzhi was different than before; he truly treated him as his boyfriend now. Fu Tingyue could not help but feel joy, and his heartbeat began to quicken.
Sensing Fu Tingyue’s rapid, powerful heartbeat, Chen Yanzhi also began to feel restless. He slowly lifted his head from Fu Tingyue’s chest, looked at him, and whispered, “Can you put the privacy partition down?”
Without asking further, Fu Tingyue pressed the button to lower the privacy partition. Their space became a secluded world; from the driver’s seat, nothing could be seen, and only faint, soft rustling sounds could be heard.
Chen Yanzhi glanced back to confirm the partition was down, then straightened his body to sit on Fu Tingyue’s lap, his gaze fixed directly on the man’s lips.
Aware of the attention, Fu Tingyue pretended not to notice. He parted his thin lips slightly in deliberate temptation and asked, “What is wrong?”
Chen Yanzhi’s gaze was bold and unshielded. His eyes traveled slowly upward from Fu Tingyue’s slightly curved lips, across the Alpha’s high bridge of the nose, and finally landed on those smiling eyes, falling deep into a pool of spring-like warmth.
“I want to kiss,” he said.
“Alright,” Fu Tingyue replied, yet he made no move, simply looking at Chen Yanzhi with eyes full of affection.
Chen Yanzhi leaned in closer. The faint scent of red wine swirled around his nose. His heart beat faster, and his nerves grew tighter. This was their first kiss while being completely sober; the previous times did not count, as they had been influenced more or less by their ruts and heats.
This was their true first kiss.
The more Chen Yanzhi thought about it, the more nervous he became. His breathing grew ragged, and the hands resting on Fu Tingyue’s shoulders gripped his clothes instinctively.
Fu Tingyue remained still. He did not rush him but waited quietly; if not for those affectionate eyes, he truly would have looked like a sculpture.
After a brief internal struggle, Chen Yanzhi closed his eyes and suddenly lowered his head to press a kiss against Fu Tingyue’s mouth. He had intended to pull away after a single touch, but Fu Tingyue’s lips possessed a magic that kept him from leaving.
So, he kissed him again, and then again. Finally, he simply looped his arms around Fu Tingyue’s neck and used the tip of his tongue to gently lick Fu Tingyue’s slightly closed lips.
Fu Tingyue did not respond, nor did he relax his teeth.
Chen Yanzhi grew a little annoyed. His beautiful brows furrowed slightly, and he gave Fu Tingyue’s shoulder a pinch. “Open up.”
He did not use much force; it was a light twist. Far from feeling pain, Fu Tingyue felt as though Chen Yanzhi were flirting with him.
Hearing Fu Tingyue’s muffled chuckle, Chen Yanzhi became even more irritated. He bit down on Fu Tingyue’s lip and ground his teeth against it. This time he used half his strength; it was not enough to break the skin, but it certainly hurt.
He demanded again, “Open your mouth.”
This time, Fu Tingyue stopped pretending. He obediently relaxed his jaw and opened his mouth.
Chen Yanzhi’s heart was racing. He was so nervous that his body shivered slightly. He licked the spot he had just bitten as a form of comfort before cautiously sliding his tongue inside.
The inside of Fu Tingyue’s mouth was hot, so hot that Chen Yanzhi felt he was about to melt. The intense smell of red wine constantly tugged at his senses, battering his consciousness.
The Alpha’s tongue was not particularly soft. Chen Yanzhi played with it for a while, and a word suddenly popped into his mind: “chewy.” Fu Tingyue’s tongue was very chewy, and kissing him felt exceptionally good.
Mainly, he loved the scent of rose wine too much. He loved it to the point that while his mind felt it was enough, his body did not.
It was strange. His heat had just passed, and Fu Tingyue was not releasing pheromones to force him into a heat. Why was he like this?
Chen Yanzhi was both confused and frustrated, yet he was deeply addicted, feeling as though he were being roasted over a fire. His mind was a mess. He could not figure it out, and his confusion gave way to an even greater doubt.
Did he like Fu Tingyue, or did he just like Fu Tingyue’s pheromones?
At that moment, the blood in Chen Yanzhi’s body ran cold. He and Fu Tingyue had crossed boundaries time and again due to accidents. He had been led astray by the man’s pheromones more than once. When forced into heat, he had repeatedly asked Fu Tingyue if the man liked him.
Fu Tingyue’s answers had been crisp and firm, without a hint of hesitation.
But what about him? Was his love for Fu Tingyue equal?
Guilt surged within him. He could not help but pull Fu Tingyue closer, his kisses becoming more desperate. He did like him. He liked Fu Tingyue, not just his pheromones, but the person himself. Fu Tingyue was the best person in the world; how could he not love him?
Sensing something was wrong, Fu Tingyue quickly pushed Chen Yanzhi back. He cupped the boy’s tear-streaked face with concern. “Zhizhi, why are you crying?”
Fu Tingyue thought he had gone too far and bullied him into tears. He was filled with self-reproach, kissing away Chen Yanzhi’s tears as he spoke. “Do not cry. It is my fault. I should not have teased you.”
Chen Yanzhi suddenly began to wail. “Fu Tingyue, I am so scared.”
A sharp pain shot through Fu Tingyue’s heart. He realized Chen Yanzhi was not crying because of the teasing. He wiped the tears away with one hand while the other patted the boy’s back to help him breathe. “Do not be afraid, Zhizhi. I am here. Tell me whatever you are scared of, and I will help you solve it.”
“I like you. It is not just your pheromones,” Chen Yanzhi said incoherently, his logic failing. “Pheromones are so scary. I do not want them. I truly wanted to kiss you.”
Fu Tingyue understood. He spoke in a gentle tone. “Chen Yanzhi, look into my eyes and calm down.”
Chen Yanzhi’s vision was blurred from crying, and he could not see clearly. His breathing became more and more rapid. Fu Tingyue had to cover the boy’s mouth to force him to breathe slowly, only letting go once he had calmed down slightly.
Chen Yanzhi grabbed Fu Tingyue’s arm uneasily. His eyes were red and swollen, and his voice was thick with a nasal quality. “Fu Tingyue, I do like you. It is not because of the pheromones.”
“I know. Do not think about that. Calm down first.” Fu Tingyue held Chen Yanzhi’s face, his heart aching. “Zhizhi, calm down. Whether you like my pheromones or you like me, I am happy. The pheromones are a part of me. You like my pheromones because you like me. Do not fall into a trap of your own making.”
Fu Tingyue had not expected that a kiss would lead Chen Yanzhi into such a state of distress, all because he could not distinguish between liking the man and liking his pheromones.
Silly boy, he thought. Liking my pheromones is liking me. What is there to be afraid of? He did not care what part of him Chen Yanzhi liked, as long as the boy loved him.
Hearing the explanation, Chen Yanzhi asked with a sob, “Really? Is it really because I like you that I am like this?”
He looked at Fu Tingyue with unease. “But you liked me long before we came here. I cannot tell the difference, Fu Tingyue, I…”
Before he could finish, Fu Tingyue pulled him into his arms. “It is okay, baby. I accept your love no matter why you like me. As long as you like me, that is enough. Do not feel afraid. You like my pheromones because our compatibility is so high.”
Chen Yanzhi did not even notice the endearment. He was still immersed in guilt and fear. “But that is not fair to you.”
Fu Tingyue looked into Chen Yanzhi’s teary eyes and said word by word, “I do not want fairness. I only want you to like me. Do you understand?”
Seeing that Chen Yanzhi did not speak, Fu Tingyue pressed him. “Chen Yanzhi, answer me. Do you understand?”
Chen Yanzhi nodded obediently. “I understand.”
Fu Tingyue kissed his slightly swollen lips as a reward. “Be good. Calm down now, okay?”
Chen Yanzhi took a few deep breaths. His emotional breakdown gradually subsided, but his gaze remained somewhat dazed. He did not know what had happened to him just now; he had suddenly felt very cold, as if he had stepped into a void and fallen into an abyss. It was terrifying.
Seeing the boy’s face filled with lingering fear and unease, Fu Tingyue let him lean against his chest, patting his back soothingly. “It is over. Do not be afraid. Do not overthink. You only need to remember that the pheromones are a part of me. There is nothing wrong with liking them. You like my pheromones because you like me. There is no absolute fairness in love, and I do not need it. As long as you like me, I do not care about anything else.”
Chen Yanzhi murmured, “I am sorry.”
Fu Tingyue said softly, “Do not say you are sorry. Tell me you like me.”
“I like you.” Chen Yanzhi could not help but choke up. “Fu Tingyue, I only like you. I do not know what happened just now, but I was suddenly so scared. I could not tell if I liked the pheromones first or you first. I was so, so scared.”
Fu Tingyue squeezed the boy’s earlobe and stroked his nape gently. “Do not be afraid. These are small matters. It is all me anyway.”
Chen Yanzhi lifted his face to look at him. “Are you not sad? It is not fair.”
Fu Tingyue looked down into those big, uneasy eyes and said seriously, “Baby, I only need you to love me. Do you understand?”
Chen Yanzhi was stunned. “Baby?”
Fu Tingyue smiled and kissed the corner of his mouth. “Yes, baby.”
Chen Yanzhi lowered his eyes. His ears turned visibly red. “I am not…”
“Are you not my baby?” Fu Tingyue asked. “Then who is my baby?”
After a moment of bashfulness, Chen Yanzhi answered in a small voice, “It is me.”
The laughter in Fu Tingyue’s throat became more pronounced. “Yes, it is you. Baby Zhizhi.”
Chen Yanzhi buried his face back into Fu Tingyue’s chest. After a moment of silence, he spoke. “I am sorry. I must have scared you just now. I will not be like that again.”
Fu Tingyue shook his head. “It was not your fault. It was my fault for not telling you about our compatibility. It is natural to feel afraid when you are influenced by pheromones while being sober. It was my fault.”
They had done a compatibility test right after Chen Yanzhi differentiated, but at the time, the boy had been too busy fiddling with his scent-blocking wristband to listen. Afterward, things had been too hectic, and Fu Tingyue had forgotten about it. It was his oversight.
Chen Yanzhi asked blankly, “What does high compatibility mean? How high is ours?”
Fu Tingyue kissed the boy’s red face and explained gently, “The higher the compatibility, the easier it is to be influenced by the other’s pheromones, and the more suited we are for each other. Ours is one hundred percent.”
Chen Yanzhi felt a bit dizzy from crying for so long. “Does that mean it is very good?”
Fu Tingyue gripped his waist and lifted him slightly so he could lean on his shoulder. “Yes. Marriage registration is possible at sixty percent or higher. The higher it goes, the rarer it is. We are the only pair with one hundred percent compatibility.”
Chen Yanzhi suddenly said, “No wonder the Fu family did not force us apart even though they knew I was an orphan. It was because of this.”
Fu Tingyue nodded. “Yes, that was the main reason. Furthermore, you are an S-class Omega; they were desperate for us to be together.”
Chen Yanzhi asked again, “Will I really get pregnant?”
Fu Tingyue hesitated for a moment and said in a low voice, “Yes, but I will not let that happen to you. Do not worry.”
Chen Yanzhi said slowly, “I am not afraid. I just think it is magical. If my parents knew I suddenly became someone who could have children, they would probably faint from shock.”
Fu Tingyue knew the boy was missing home again, so he simply patted his back in comfort.
Unease was like a thin thread pulled tight across Chen Yanzhi’s heart, liable to snap at any moment. He kissed the side of Fu Tingyue’s neck, his tone almost pleading. “Fu Tingyue, I will love you forever. Do not leave me, okay?”
Fu Tingyue promised, “I will not leave you. We will be together for a lifetime.”
Chen Yanzhi gave a hum of agreement and buried his face in the crook of Fu Tingyue’s neck. Smelling the comforting scent of rose wine, his cold body gradually regained warmth, and his empty heart was slowly filled.
He would be with Fu Tingyue for a lifetime, never to be parted.
