- Chapter 11 - I Just Want to Hold You
Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, landing squarely on Chen Yanzhi’s face.
The beautiful youth was nestled among the soft bedding, his hair a messy bird’s nest from sleep. He was sprawled in a starfish position, occupying the entire bed. Perhaps due to the heat, his fair skin was flushed with a healthy, pale pink glow, and his lips looked moist and lustrous; they looked very kissable.
A sudden noise from outside the window startled him. He furrowed his brows, let out a small whine, and buried his face deeper into the quilt, nuzzling side to side like a kitten while kicking his feet in protest.
But the commotion outside did not stop, refusing to let Chen Yanzhi rest in peace.
He grumbled and burrowed into the covers for a moment when a flash of memory hit him: Fu Tingyue pinning him down, hot fingertips stroking the skin of his neck, whispering his name incessantly in his ear, and more.
Holy crap!
Chen Yanzhi bolted upright as if struck by lightning, looking around in terror. This was not his room; it was Fu Tingyue’s. When did he get here?
He sat dazed for a moment until he remembered that beast, Fu Tingyue. Ignoring everything else, he did not even put on shoes before storming over to bang on Fu Tingyue’s bedroom door.
After knocking for a long time with no response, Chen Yanzhi was about to head back to climb over from his own balcony when a servant’s voice came from behind him: “The Eldest Young Master has gone to the office. He left instructions for your breakfast. Would you like to eat now or later?”
Chen Yanzhi froze, his hand still raised. He knit his brows and asked, “The office?”
Isn’t Fu Tingyue in his Rut? Why go to the office? He had read online last night that an Alpha’s Rut usually lasts about five days. This was only the second day!
The servant replied respectfully, “Yes. The Young Master said he won’t be back until evening. He instructed us to ensure you eat well.”
Chen Yanzhi reasonably suspected that Fu Tingyue was hiding from him to avoid a beating. He immediately called Fu Tingyue, but no one picked up. This only confirmed his suspicion.
Chen Yanzhi was angry, but at the thought of Fu Tingyue working while still suffering through a Rut, his heart softened with a hint of concern. He called two more times until the call finally connected. Chen Yanzhi skipped the pleasantries: “Hiding from me, are you?”
Fu Tingyue’s raspy voice came through the phone. “No.”
Chen Yanzhi did not want to hear his excuses. He went straight for the threat: “Fu Tingyue, if you hadn’t hidden and just apologized properly, I might have gone easy on you. Now I’m actually pissed. Just wait until you get back tonight; I’ll beat the life out of you. Has your Rut even passed? Why are you running to the office?”
Knowing how dangerous it was for an Alpha in Rut to be out, yet he went anyway; he clearly did not care about his own body. Although Chen Yanzhi did not know exactly how painful a Rut was, based on Fu Tingyue’s state last night, it definitely was not pleasant.
Yet he ran to work just to avoid him. Chen Yanzhi grew even angrier. Of course, it was mostly worry, but he refused to admit that.
Fu Tingyue answered in a very low voice, “I’m fine now. I took a suppressant before leaving this morning.”
Chen Yanzhi issued an ultimatum: “Either I come to the office to drag you out, or you come back yourself. Choose.”
“I still have work.”
“What work is so important you have to handle it while sick? Fu Tingyue, let me tell you, if you want to die, you don’t have to struggle this hard. Why act tough when you’re clearly suffering? Fine, if you don’t care about your own body, I’m not going to bother.”
Chen Yanzhi hung up immediately and promptly blocked Fu Tingyue. He checked the time and calculated the return trip. Although he had not been to Fu Tingyue’s office, he estimated the drive was about fifteen minutes without traffic. By the time he finished washing up and went downstairs, Fu Tingyue should be back.
The nanny stood by trembling until Chen Yanzhi instructed her to prepare breakfast for two. Only then did she scurry downstairs like she had been granted a royal pardon.
Fu Tingyue knew Chen Yanzhi, and Chen Yanzhi knew him just as well.
Sure enough, as soon as Chen Yanzhi finished washing up and headed downstairs, Fu Tingyue returned. He was wearing a black suit, his hair groomed perfectly, but he was still wearing the bite guard. His brow was tightly furrowed; he looked extremely uncomfortable.
Chen Yanzhi leaned against a pillar with his arms crossed, tapping his toe impatiently. He watched expressionlessly as Fu Tingyue handed his coat to the servant.
Fu Tingyue let out a weary sigh, walked over to Chen Yanzhi, and lowered his head. “I’m back. Do you want to hit me now?”
Chen Yanzhi rolled his eyes, let out a hmpf, and ignored him, turning to sit at the dining table. He decided to give Fu Tingyue the cold shoulder; otherwise, the man would never learn to take his health seriously.
Certain people seemed to have forgotten they vowed to kill Fu Tingyue last night; now their mind was entirely occupied with worrying about his condition.
Fu Tingyue looked at Chen Yanzhi’s back, sighed, and followed him to the table. He took off the bite guard and sat down to accompany Chen Yanzhi for breakfast.
Chen Yanzhi finally spoke his first sentence: “How did you know the password?”
Fu Tingyue replied, “I guessed.”
Chen Yanzhi had a poor memory; all his passwords were the same. It was not hard to figure out.
“Wow, you’re quite the genius then,” Chen Yanzhi sneered, eating his breakfast with deliberate slowness.
After breakfast, they went upstairs. The nanny went aside and called Fu Tingyue’s mother to report on his Rut.
Madam Fu’s impatient voice came through the line: “He’s in his twenties; what’s so strange about a Rut? Don’t report such trivialities to me. How is he doing with that Beta of unknown origin?”
The nanny looked around to ensure no one was listening before whispering, “They seem to be arguing. Master Chen hasn’t spoken to the Young Master since he returned. Madam, should we take this opportunity to make the Beta leave?”
Madam Fu said, “No. It’s better if he stays with that Beta. Eventually, the board members will use this to pressure Tingyue. Then Baiyu’s chance will be even greater.”
“Understood, Madam,” the nanny replied respectfully.
Chen Yanzhi and Fu Tingyue were oblivious to this conversation. They were currently in the same room, but the atmosphere was stifling.
Fu Tingyue had put the bite guard back on. His eyes were downcast, the cold light reflecting off the metal, making him look like a wronged puppy. “Zhizhi, you can vent your anger however you like, but the doctor said you shouldn’t bottle things up; it’s bad for your health.”
Chen Yanzhi turned his back to him, playing a game on his phone. “I’m not angry. Who’s angry?”
He could not be bothered to be angry; he was not the one suffering.
Fu Tingyue’s voice, full of self-reproach, rose from behind him. “I’m sorry. My head was not clear last night.”
He had regretted it the moment he woke up this morning: regretted not being firm enough in making Chen Yanzhi leave. He had been too greedy, wanting Chen Yanzhi to care for him, yet he could not stop himself from doing that to him. Then he hid like a coward. It was only right that Chen Yanzhi was angry.
Fu Tingyue hated being an Alpha. He did not want to be a slave to pheromones and do those things to Chen Yanzhi.
Chen Yanzhi slapped his phone down on the sofa and turned around to glare at Fu Tingyue. “You think I’m angry because of last night?”
Fu Tingyue looked at him blankly. “Aren’t you? You said you were going to kill me.”
Mentioning that only fanned the flames. Chen Yanzhi stood up and cornered him. “Shouldn’t I kill you? What the hell did you do to me? It still hurts just to go to the bathroom today!”
He was genuinely worried his little bird was broken; it had hurt like hell to pee this morning. He had been so worried about Fu Tingyue earlier that he had briefly forgotten about his own predicament.
Fu Tingyue kept his head down, his voice carrying a strange, pathetic quality. “I’m sorry. It’s my fault. Next time I’m in Rut, don’t worry about me. Just lock me up and leave me alone.”
Chen Yanzhi tsked. “Are you threatening me?”
“Not a threat; I could never threaten you. I just don’t want to do that to you again. Pheromones took over my brain; I could not control my actions.” Fu Tingyue met his eyes, his voice full of self-loathing. “Zhizhi, an Alpha in Rut is just a beast that only knows how to reproduce. I am no exception.”
Hearing this, Chen Yanzhi felt a pang in his chest. He angrily grabbed Fu Tingyue’s collar and looked up at him. “Fu Tingyue, are you saying this on purpose just to make me feel sorry for you?”
He let go and tried to shove him. The man did not budge. Frustrated, Chen Yanzhi used both hands to push.
Fu Tingyue stumbled back a step. “No. I just want you to ignore me next time. Lock me up and let me be alone.”
If he could actually do that, he would not be Chen Yanzhi.
But Chen Yanzhi was still furious, though he was not even sure what he was angry at anymore. Finally, he grabbed Fu Tingyue’s arm and bit him hard. He did not let go until he tasted blood.
After releasing him, he looked at the teeth marks with a disgusted expression. “Is Alpha meat always this tough?”
Suddenly, Fu Tingyue’s wristband began flashing red; an alarm. His eyes began to look like they had last night, though he still had some reason left. Chen Yanzhi’s bite had almost sent him over the edge into losing control. It felt too good.
He asked with shallow breath, “Can you bite me again?”
“You’re not about to lose control again, are you?” Chen Yanzhi stepped back warily, eyes searching the room for something to tie him up with.
Fu Tingyue closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Once he had steadied his breathing, he reopened them. “No. I just briefly lost control of the pheromones.”
Chen Yanzhi did not dare bite him again. He retreated behind the sofa. “Last night’s matter is settled. We’re even. I’m not angry anymore.”
Fu Tingyue asked dazed, “You don’t hate me?”
Chen Yanzhi waved it off. “If you mistreat my bird again, then I’ll hate you. This time, I’ll let it slide.”
It was Fu Tingyue’s first Rut; he must have been scared too. He could not control his actions; it was not intentional. In Chen Yanzhi’s heart, Fu Tingyue was just sick, and it was not cool to hold a grudge against a patient.
Fu Tingyue’s pheromones continued to leak uncontrollably. The red light on his wristband kept flashing, and his heart rate accelerated.
Then, Chen Yanzhi changed the subject. “However, the fact that you dared to go to the office in this state; that’s not over yet.”
As he spoke, he noticed something was wrong. Chen Yanzhi felt a weight pressing down on him. He gasped for air and asked, “Do you need another suppressant?”
The veins on Fu Tingyue’s neck and arms were bulging; he was about to lose it. He did not dare delay. He grabbed a suppressant from the drawer and injected it. The terrifying tide receded. He sat on the edge of the bed, drenched in sweat, panting with his head tilted back. He looked both sexy and fragile.
Chen Yanzhi stepped forward with concern. “Fu Tingyue, are you okay?”
He never learned his lesson. To him, Fu Tingyue was too important to ignore.
Fu Tingyue dropped the empty syringe and pulled Chen Yanzhi into a powerful embrace. Chen Yanzhi thought he had lost control again and started to struggle, but then he heard Fu Tingyue’s strained voice: “Zhizhi, don’t be afraid. I’m still conscious. I just, I just want to hold you.”
Chen Yanzhi relaxed and let himself be held. He knew this made Fu Tingyue feel better; it was how he had held him last night. But he still asked, worried, “Are you really, okay?”
Fu Tingyue buried his face in the crook of Chen Yanzhi’s neck, his voice muffled. “I’m fine. I’ll be okay in a moment.”
Chen Yanzhi hummed in response. He adjusted his position, kneeling in front of Fu Tingyue so the embrace was more comfortable. He even raised a hand to pat Fu Tingyue’s sweat-soaked back. “It’s okay, Fu Tingyue. You’re just sick. Don’t hate yourself. I’m right here.”
