- Chapter 4 - A Social-Death Scene After the Heart Demon Value Exploded
Raising his eyes, Xiao Jinn’s incredibly handsome face was just inches away, the cinnabar mole between his brows a startling, piercing red.
Xie Lin bolted upright as if jolted by electricity, his head striking the tree trunk behind him with a dull thud.
The pain made his vision swim, but he heard Xiao Jinn let out a low laugh.
“Does Senior Brother enjoy watching me make a fool of myself so much?” Xie Lin rubbed his head, gritting his teeth.
“No.”
Xiao Jinn took a handkerchief from his sleeve and naturally wiped away the smear of sugar from the corner of his mouth.
“I just didn’t expect that when Young Master Xie’s heart demon flared up, he would refuse to let go of a honey jar.”
Xie Lin froze.
Fragmented memories flooded into his mind.
He seemed… indeed… to have been licking and rubbing against a jar of honey…
[Social-Death Behavior Replay: The Host was hugging a honey jar, singing nursery rhymes, and insisting that Xiao Jinn let him ride on his back like a horse.]
The system delivered the final blow at the perfect moment:
[Current Heart Demon Value: 55%, still within the danger threshold.]
Xie Lin’s ears burned bright red; he wanted to dig a hole on the spot and bury himself alive.
“That was… the heart demon at work!”
He forced himself to stay calm: “I never eat sweets in my daily life.”
Xiao Jinn arched an eyebrow and, as if performing magic, pulled an oil-paper parcel from behind his back.
Opening it revealed several pieces of amber-colored osmanthus candy, the sweet aroma instantly filling the air.
“Is that so?”
He picked up a piece and dangled it in front of Xie Lin—
“Then these…”
Xie Lin’s gaze was involuntarily drawn to the candy, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
The Heart-Eating Lotus’s craving for sweets was carved into his soul, and it was even harder to resist when his Heart Demon Value was high.
“Take it away!”
He turned his face away, though his voice lacked conviction.
A flash of craftiness flickered in Xiao Jinn’s eyes, and he suddenly popped the candy into his own mouth, then leaned over and moved in close—
“Do you want to eat it?” he asked, his speech slurred and his breath carrying the scent of osmanthus.
Xie Lin’s eyes widened, staring at the faint smear of sugar on the thin lips inches away, his brain directly short-circuiting.
Is… is he going to feed it to me?!
“You… you…”
He stuttered as he backed away, his back hitting the tree trunk with no way out.
Xiao Jinn, however, suddenly straightened up, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed the candy, his face looking utterly innocent: “What? What did Young Master Xie think I was going to do?”
Only then did Xie Lin realize he’d been played, and in his anger, he kicked out: “Xiao Jinn!”
Xiao Jinn avoided it with ease, the amusement in his eyes deepening.
He suddenly turned serious, a point of spiritual light gathering at his fingertip as he pressed it between Xie Lin’s brows:
“The heart demon is temporarily suppressed, but your Heart-Eating Lotus and the Xuantian Sect’s great array are incompatible; it must be resolved as soon as possible.”
Xie Lin slapped his hand away: “I will not trouble Senior Brother.”
Xiao Jinn acted as if his resistance didn’t exist: “You have two choices.”
“First, I channel spiritual power to you every day; second, you learn the Xuantian Sect’s mental cultivation method from me to regulate it.”
Xie Lin was stunned.
The Xuantian Sect’s mental cultivation method was a closely guarded secret; was Xiao Jinn actually going to…?
“Why help me?”
He narrowed his eyes: “Don’t tell me it’s because of that bit of gratitude from three years ago.”
Xiao Jinn looked toward the brightening sky in the distance, the dawn light gilding his side profile with a golden edge: “You saved my life once; I am returning the favor. It is fair.”
Just as Xie Lin was about to press him further, Lin Miaomiao’s voice suddenly rang out from near to far: “Senior Brother! The Sect Leader has summoned all disciples!”
Xiao Jinn’s expression sharpened, and he quickly performed an invisibility incantation on Xie Lin:
“The sneak attack by the Nether Palace cannot be kept a secret; you should return to your room first, and don’t let anyone discover your wounds.”
Xie Lin looked down, only then noticing that the wound on his arm had been carefully bandaged, and even tied with an ugly butterfly knot.
“Senior Brother really has poor craftsmanship.”
He curled his lip in disdain, yet his heart felt inexplicably warm.
Xiao Jinn made no comment, but before turning to leave, he suddenly looked back: “By the way, that nursery rhyme you sang… Little Rabbit, Be Good… it was cute.”
Xie Lin: “……!!”
After Xiao Jinn walked far away, Xie Lin roared with burning ears:
“System! Didn’t you say that social-death behaviors wouldn’t be remembered by people?!”
[This system only said it was random, not that it caused amnesia.]
The system replied without a shred of guilt:
[I suggest the Host lower the Heart Demon Value as soon as possible, or next time it might be streaking.]
Xie Lin’s vision went black.
Returning to the small courtyard where he was temporarily staying, Xie Lin had just pushed the door open when he sensed something wrong.
There was the aura of a stranger in the room!
He instantly tensed, demonic energy gathering in his palm.
Suddenly, a cold light struck directly at his face!
Xie Lin dodged to the side, but the hidden weapon veered mid-air, grazing his neck before burying itself into the door panel behind him.
“Your reactions are slow.”
A figure wearing a silver mask emerged from the shadows: “It seems life in the Xuantian Sect is quite comfortable?”
Xie Lin’s pupils shrank: “Xie Wuchen!”
The Right Emissary of the Nether Palace sat elegantly at the tea table, idly playing with a poisoned dart: “Your brother is saddened that the Young Master would actually help an outsider deal with his own people.”
Xie Lin secretly stayed on guard, the Heart-Eating Lotus agitated within him: “Brother intruded into the Xuantian Sect; are you not afraid of being discovered?”
“A mere mountain-protecting array…” Xie Wuchen chuckled.
Suddenly, he pulled back his sleeve.
Wrapped around his wrist was the Heart-Eating Lotus mark, identical to the one Xie Lin possessed!
“You also have the Heart-Eating Lotus?!”
Xie Lin was too shocked to maintain his disguise: “That’s impossible…”
“Surprised?” Xie Wuchen rose and approached: “Did you think you were really the Young Master of the Nether Palace?”
He grabbed Xie Lin’s chin: “You’re nothing more than a vessel.”
Xie Lin felt a chill through his entire body.
The original book hadn’t mentioned this part at all!
“Let him go.”
An icy voice came from the doorway.
Xiao Jinn had returned at some point, his life-bound sword pointing straight at Xie Wuchen’s throat, the sword energy leaving a faint scratch on his silver mask.
“Chief of the Xuantian Sect…”
Xie Wuchen released Xie Lin and laughed gloomily: “So nervous about my younger brother?”
Xiao Jinn’s sword blade shifted, a fierce sword energy separating the two: “Get out.”
Xie Wuchen’s figure began to fade. “Truly touching.”
“Pity… you don’t even know the true purpose of the Heart-Eating Lotus.”
He cast a final look at Xie Lin: “At the Zi hour (midnight) in three days, I will wait for you at the Cliff of Severed Souls.”
“Otherwise…”
A meaningful gaze swept across Xiao Jinn: “The secret of this Chief Disciple will be spread throughout the entire cultivation world.”
Before the words had finished, his figure had dissipated into black fog.
Xie Lin’s legs went weak, and he was caught just in time by Xiao Jinn.
Only then did he realize his back was drenched in sweat.
Xie Wuchen’s pressure was far more terrifying than he had imagined.
“What secret… was he referring to?” Xie Lin asked tentatively.
Xiao Jinn sheathed his sword, his expression as usual: “Do not listen to his attempts to sow discord.”
He inspected the scratch on Xie Lin’s neck, his brows locked tight: “A poisoned dart?”
Xie Lin instinctively dodged his touch: “It didn’t wound me. Why did you come back?”
Xiao Jinn took a porcelain bottle from his chest: “I forgot to give you the medicine.”
He paused: “And… the Sect Leader has ordered a thorough investigation for Nether Palace spies; you should not show your face for the time being.”
Xie Lin’s heart jumped.
Did this mean… he wanted to hide him away?
“Is Senior Brother planning to hide a beauty in a golden house?”
He teased deliberately, trying to ease the tense atmosphere.
To his surprise, Xiao Jinn nodded seriously: “You can understand it that way.”
Xie Lin: “…”
Why doesn’t this male lead follow the script!
“Where will I stay?”
“My room.”
Xie Lin was nearly choked by his own saliva: “What?!”
“The most dangerous place is the safest.” Xiao Jinn looked perfectly righteous.
“No one would dare to search the living quarters of the Chief Disciple.”
Xie Lin wanted to retort, but heard a clamor from outside.
Xiao Jinn’s expression sharpened; he grabbed his waist and leaped out through the back window, landing in a few bounds in a quiet little courtyard.
In the courtyard, pear blossoms were in full bloom, covering the entire garden in snow-white petals.
Xiao Jinn’s living quarters were simpler than Xie Lin had imagined; apart from a bed and a table, there were only shelves overflowing with books.
“Take off your clothes.” As soon as he entered the door, Xiao Jinn gave the order.
