- Chapter 53 (EXTRA)
The day Xie Xingfan was born, her mom told her, “Your mommy was exhausted because of you, little troublemaker. You sure took your sweet time coming out.”
Xie Xingfan had listened with wide, curious eyes. Later, she asked, “Mama, how do you make babies?”
Her mom smiled and replied, “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
Time flew by, and soon Xie Xingfan was old enough to attend kindergarten.
One day, during playtime, her classmates started talking about where babies came from.
“My mom said I came out of a rock!” one bragged.
“My mom said she picked me up from the garbage dump,” another chimed in.
“My mom told me I was a free gift for topping up her phone credit!” said a third.
The classroom buzzed with chatter as each child shared their “origin story.”
Then, Xie Xingfan stood up, cleared her throat, and declared with great seriousness, “You’re all wrong. I know where we really come from.”
Her classmates turned to her, eyes round with curiosity. “Then where?”
“From kissing,” Xie Xingfan announced solemnly.
“Kissing?” they echoed in confusion.
“Yeah,” she said, nodding wisely. “It’s like when your mom and dad kiss you, except this one’s different. It only works when they like each other. Then they’ll have a baby.”
“That’s how we come out?” one classmate gasped.
“Wow, Xingfan, you know so much!” little An Li said, lying on the floor with her chin propped up, gazing at her with admiration.
Flustered, Xie Xingfan’s cheeks turned pink. She glanced down at An Li’s chubby, round face and couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch it.
Just then, the kindergarten teacher walked into the playroom. “Alright, everyone, class is over! Line up and get ready to go home.”
The children rushed to the teacher’s side.
“Line up properly,” the teacher reminded.
Xie Xingfan turned to take An Li’s hand, her voice soft and sweet. “Let’s go.”
“Mm-hmm!” An Li nodded eagerly.
Outside the school gates, parents were waiting to pick up their children.
As everyone reunited with their families, two familiar figures appeared in the distance — Xie Yinian and Xia Ruoxi.
Xie Yinian walked over, ruffling Xingfan’s hair affectionately. “How was school today?”
“It was fine,” Xingfan replied coolly, hands behind her back.
She looked so much like Xie Yinian, but her temperament was more like Xia Ruoxi’s — quiet, reserved, and a little aloof. The only person she wasn’t cold toward was her mommy.
Xie Yinian noticed the little girl standing beside her daughter and smiled. “Hi, Xiao Li.”
“Hello, Aunties,” An Li greeted sweetly, her voice soft and milky.
“So polite,” Xie Yinian praised with a grin.
An Li was the daughter of An Lin and Lu Anran — a lively little Omega, quite the opposite of her own calm, proud little Alpha. Despite their differences, the two girls got along surprisingly well.
Soon, An Lin and Lu Anran arrived to pick up An Li. The child looked back reluctantly, waving her tiny hand. “Bye-bye, Xingfan! Bye-bye, Aunties!”
An Lin smiled and exchanged a few words with them before taking An Li home.
Xie Xingfan’s eyes followed An Li’s retreating figure until she was out of sight.
Xia Ruoxi crouched down beside her daughter and asked gently, “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Xingfan shook her head, then reached out with both arms and said softly, “Hug.”
She hadn’t dared ask for one earlier when An Li was around — it was embarrassing.
Xia Ruoxi laughed, scooping her up into her arms. She planted a light kiss on her daughter’s cheek. “Such a clingy little one,” she teased.
Xingfan burrowed shyly into her mommy’s embrace, hiding her flushed face.
Watching them, Xie Yinian’s lips twitched. Her daughter was never this bashful at home. The moment her mommy appeared, she turned into a blushing little kitten. Definitely inherited her looks and her weakness for pretty faces, Xie Yinian thought helplessly.
The three of them walked to the parking lot together.
After getting into the car, Xie Yinian helped buckle Xingfan’s seatbelt.
“Mama,” Xingfan said suddenly, turning to her. “What does ‘happiness’ mean?”
Xie Yinian tapped her little nose playfully. “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
Xingfan puffed out her cheeks. That line again.
“Is happiness like when you and Mommy kiss and hug?” she asked earnestly. “And at night, when you don’t let me sleep with you—are you being ‘happy’ together in secret?”
Her tone was soft, even a little pouty, as if she felt unfairly left out of their “happiness.”
Caught completely off guard, Xie Yinian scratched her cheek awkwardly. “Uh, well, about that.”
Xie Yinian didn’t quite know how to explain it to her.
From the back seat, Xia Ruoxi’s cheeks flushed at her daughter’s question. She coughed lightly, then said softly to Xie Xingfan,
“Happiness means being with the people you love. That’s when you feel true joy—whether it’s family, friendship, or love.”
“Yes, we’re all very happy,” Xie Yinian quickly added, hoping the little one would drop the topic.
Xie Xingfan nodded, half understanding.
That night, after finishing her homework, she was urged by her mom to go to her own room and sleep.
“Kids shouldn’t stay up late,” Xie Yinian reminded her.
Reluctantly giving up her plan to watch a cartoon, Xie Xingfan went back to her room and climbed into bed.
A while later, she got up to go to the bathroom. As she passed by her moms’ bedroom, she suddenly heard faint sounds coming from inside.
“Yinian, don’t.”
“Baby.”
“Mm.”
“Hurry. I can’t hold on anymore.”
“Okay.”
The voices came intermittently, muffled by the walls. The soundproofing must’ve been good, because she couldn’t hear clearly.
Puzzled, Xie Xingfan stared at the door and thought, Are Mama and Mommy being happy right now?
Sleepiness soon took over, and she shook her head, deciding not to think about it. She hurried to the bathroom, then went back to bed.
The next day, the kindergarten kids had a new topic of discussion: What is happiness?
Xie Xingfan repeated what her mommy had told her about happiness to her classmates. They all nodded, half understanding.
“Then I want to be happy too!” said An Li cheerfully.
Xie Xingfan looked at her shyly, her little face turning red. “I can give it to you.”
“Really?” An Li’s eyes lit up.
“Mm.” Xie Xingfan nodded seriously.
Just then, the teacher called everyone to the cafeteria for lunch. The group of children dashed out in excitement, leaving only the two girls in the classroom.
An Li quickly grabbed Xie Xingfan’s hand. “Come on, let’s go too!”
But she pulled too hard—Xie Xingfan stumbled forward, and their lips accidentally brushed.
An Li’s eyes widened in surprise.
The touch was soft and warm.
Blushing furiously, An Li pushed her away and stammered, “I—I, you.”
Xie Xingfan took her hand earnestly and said, “I’ll take responsibility for you.”
After all, Mommy had said that when you like someone and are together, you have to take responsibility. She had just kissed An Li—wouldn’t that make her pregnant? If she got pregnant, they’d have a baby, and if they had a baby, they’d get married. So of course, she had to be responsible.
“Mm.” An Li replied softly, her face still red.
The two of them held hands and went off to lunch together.
That evening, when the two children told the story at home, the adults couldn’t help bursting into laughter.
