- Chapter 21 - Aftermath of the Incident
“Bang!”
A loud crash echoed, followed by screams from the surroundings.
Wei Qingqing was scared out of her wits and rushed to support Shen Junfu. It was only then she realized that, at some unknown moment, Huo Qingzhuo’s hand had blocked the corner of the table.
Shen Junfu sat on the floor clutching his forehead. He looked up at Huo Qingzhuo’s hand resting on the table corner. “You… your hand…”
“What are you all doing?!” Wenren Heyu, who had rushed over, stepped into the room and saw this terrifying scene; his heart nearly stopped.
Ignoring Wenren Heyu, Shen Junfu stood up and supported Huo Qingzhuo. “Quick! Get her to the hospital!”
Shu Yueqing had almost grown accustomed to receiving a phone call from Huo Qingzhuo every day at noon, and she had grown used to the different lullabies each day. The person who should have been falling asleep on time was instead sitting in the lounge, staring at the phone that had yet to ring, unable to sleep.
Just as she was wondering if the other party had been delayed by something, the phone suddenly rang. Shu Yueqing didn’t even notice the slight leap of joy in her heart as she reached for the phone. However, after seeing that the caller was Wenren Heyu, she felt somewhat disappointed.
“Hello…” Her mood gradually sank as Wenren Heyu spoke. Shu Yueqing sat up. “Which hospital? I’m coming over right now.”
On the other side, amidst a flurry of chaos, Huo Qingzhuo’s arm and hand were so painful that she was nearly drifting out of consciousness. By the time the pain subsided slightly, she had finished her examination and was lying in the hospital with an IV drip.
Since parents needed to be notified, Huo Qingzhuo thought about it and decided to follow her habit from her previous life, contacting Lao Jiu from the company.
Fortunately, Lao Jiu was a man of leisure and happened to be nearby. He arrived quickly. After inquiring with the doctor about the situation, he stood to the side with a constant frown.
Huo Qingzhuo also knew that the injury was serious this time. Her arm would likely scar, her pinky finger was dislocated, and there was ligament damage. It was very likely she wouldn’t be able to play the piano in the future. For her career as a talented artist, this was a significant loss.
“Xiao Zhuo, I need to discuss something with you.” Lao Jiu turned off his phone and looked at Huo Qingzhuo seriously.
“Go ahead.” Huo Qingzhuo’s heart skipped a beat.
Before Lao Jiu could speak, Shen Junfu and Wei Qingqing returned from their own check-ups. Lao Jiu glanced at the two of them, sat down in the chair by the hospital bed, and started playing with his phone. “We’ll talk later.”
Huo Qingzhuo agreed. After exchanging a few words with Wei Qingqing and Shen Junfu, Shu Yueqing’s voice and hurried footsteps came from outside. Wenren Heyu explained the cause and effect beside her as the two of them pushed open the door.
Seeing so many people in the ward, Shu Yueqing paused for a moment before looking at Huo Qingzhuo. “How is it?”
Suppressing the flicker of pleasure at the corner of her mouth, Huo Qingzhuo glanced at Lao Jiu, who was sitting nearby frowning at his phone, then nodded to Shu Yueqing. “It’s fine, just a minor flesh wound.”
“How will those students who maliciously hurt people be dealt with?”
Looking at Huo Qingzhuo’s bandaged arm and hand, Shu Yueqing felt a pang of distress. Knowing that Huo Qingzhuo didn’t want her to worry, she simply stood by the door and spoke to Wenren Heyu to distract herself.
Shen Junfu stood by the window, watching Shu Yueqing—who hadn’t looked at him once from start to finish. The words he wanted to say died in his throat. He turned around and adjusted the stray hairs on his head to cover his bruised forehead.
“The surveillance footage from the classroom has already been handed over to the police station. This incident is no small matter. The involved students will be dealt with severely. As for student Huo Qingzhuo’s medical expenses, they will be jointly compensated by the parents of the involved students and the school.”
Wenren Heyu had already seen the surveillance. The responsibility lay entirely with the other party. Moreover, because their actions were so egregious, they would face detention at the very least and would have a permanent criminal record.
Shu Yueqing was reasonably satisfied with this outcome. She turned to look at Huo Qingzhuo. “Then, Xiao Huo, get some rest. Don’t worry about anything. Call me if you need anything. Junfu and I will go handle this matter first and visit you again next time.”
Huo Qingzhuo forced a smile. “Alright, President Shu, please go ahead with your business. See you next time.”
Hearing this distant form of address, Shu Yueqing was stunned for a moment, but she didn’t think much of it. She nodded and left with Shen Junfu.
Walking down the road, Shen Junfu looked at Shu Yueqing’s hurried back and rubbed his eyes with a bitter smile. “Mom, help me transfer schools.”
…
Huo Qingzhuo’s condition was indeed not critical. Her arm had a gash and was somewhat swollen, and her hand was swollen as well. It was painful, but not a major problem.
Wenren Heyu also needed to go to the police station. Seeing that Huo Qingzhuo had someone there, he took Wei Qingqing along. Regardless of the situation, it was the third year of high school; the academic workload was heavy and could not be delayed.
Only Lao Jiu and Huo Qingzhuo were left in the ward. Huo Qingzhuo remembered what Lao Jiu had started to say. “Teacher, what were you going to tell me just now?”
Lao Jiu looked up and adjusted his glasses. “I want you to consider leaving school. I will hire private tutors for you. This way, your studies won’t be delayed, it will be more convenient, and thirdly, it’s safer. What do you think?”
Huo Qingzhuo was stunned for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, I’ll leave the arrangements to you.”
A major event occurred at Shengguan Middle School, which the school authorities termed the “Grade 12 Class 9 Campus Violence Incident.”
Regarding all involved students from Grade 12 Class 8, they were all detained, the school issued a campus-wide announcement, and they were punished with expulsion. All teachers and students were told to take this as a warning.
The school’s announcement was out, but the matter was far from over.
When the students of Shengguan Middle School were discussing the incident, they finally realized that the parties involved from Class 9 had all disappeared.
Huo Qingzhuo had applied for a long-term leave of absence. Shen Junfu transferred to Zhuoyun Noble Middle School. As for Wei Qingqing, it was heard that she had obtained a recommendation for Peking University and had transferred early to the High School Affiliated to Peking University. The once bustling campus seemed to turn cold and quiet all at once.
It wasn’t until the next day, when Shu Yueqing wanted to visit Huo Qingzhuo again, that she heard Wenren Heyu mention this. It turned out Huo Qingzhuo had been discharged that very day, went to school to handle the leave of absence procedures, and took all her things away.
Sitting in her office, Shu Yueqing was lost in thought, her phone playing the piano music Huo Qingzhuo had recorded for her.
This was recorded before the opening ceremony. Huo Qingzhuo had used the new grand piano Shu Yueqing donated to the school to play all the pieces she had played for her before, recording them to send to her. At the time, Huo Qingzhuo had joked that she might not always have the chance to play this piano for Shu Yueqing, so it was better to record them first.
Shu Yueqing hadn’t thought much of it at the time, thinking she would just give Huo Qingzhuo a piano when she graduated, but she didn’t expect the opportunity to be gone so soon.
After being discharged, Huo Qingzhuo went home first. After much persuasion, she finally managed to soothe the four elders. After obtaining their consent for the leave of absence, she was picked up by Lao Jiu that same day to begin arranging for tutors and work.
Huo Qingzhuo hadn’t originally intended to stay at Lao Jiu’s house, but Lao Jiu mentioned that his nanny could take care of Huo Qingzhuo’s daily needs so she wouldn’t have to burden the elderly, so Huo Qingzhuo agreed.
Lao Jiu’s home was a very quiet place, leaning against the mountains and facing the sea—a small manor. There were two gardeners, a cook, and a butler. Whether it was the house or the servants, they were much like Lao Jiu himself: slow-paced and seemingly out of step with this fast and efficient world, like a paradise.
Of course, there was another important reason to call it a paradise: it was isolated from the world. In short, there was no internet.
