- Chapter 17 - Night Raid
Su Yuanyuan harbored a brewing sense of stifled frustration within her chest. Snorting coldly, she strode forward on her own accord.
Behind her, Fan Chen immediately brushed Song Ling’er aside and hurried to catch up, leaving Song Ling’er standing all alone in place to watch their retreating backs fade away.
The bond between these two ran deeper than she had anticipated, yet it was by no means entirely devoid of flaws.
A flicker of dark purple light flashed past Song Ling’er’s eyes in a fraction of a second. Quickening her pace to follow them, her posture grew increasingly alluring, rendering her delicate, pretty face all the more captivating and seductive.
“Brother Fan Chen, Sister Su, wait for me~”
Dressed in a smoky-purple gauze gown today, the delicate, fluid fabric fluttered with her movements while a pearl belt strung with East Sea pearls cinched her waist. As her hips swayed gracefully with every step, she exuded a light, willow-like weightlessness and ethereal charm.
She walked at a leisurely pace, her hanging jade trinkets chiming together to form a crisp, melodious symphony.
Every single gesture she made carried an intoxicating aura of allure, causing passing pedestrians along the street to halt in their tracks and stare. More than a few turned their heads around, craning their necks just to keep gazing at her.
Sensing the lingering, sticky, and revolting gaze of these passersby resting upon her, a murderous intent flashed through Song Ling’er’s heart, leaving her wishing she could instantly gouge out all of their eyes and hack their bodies into ten thousand pieces.
Their stares clung to her like a shadow viscous and disgusting. As expected, she utterly despised these cheap, wretched men.
Despite such thoughts churning inwardly, the smile gracing Song Ling’er’s face only grew brighter and more radiant.
Arriving at the inn, Shen Wang sat composed and upright in the ground-floor lobby as Su Yuanyuan and Fan Chen walked in one after the other.
“All the guest rooms within the city are fully booked. I managed to secure the final three rooms available here, but the four of us will need to discuss how to arrange our accommodations.”
Gracefully lifting his teacup, Shen Wang took a light sip, leaving the decision entirely in their hands.
Song Ling’er who had arrived as the last of the group promptly wrapped her arms around Su Yuanyuan’s arm with absolute, natural familiarity upon hearing these words.
“Then I’ll share a room with Sister Su for the next few days. Sister Su is so strong and capable; staying together with her will give us both a reliable companion to lean on.”
Looking somewhat unaccustomed to Song Ling’er’s sudden, intimate approach, Su Yuanyuan froze the arm that had just been locked into place.
Standing this close, she could even catch the sweet, faint fragrance drifting from Song Ling’er’s body.
“Sister Su, I’m begging you, please let me sleep in the same room as you for the next few days, alright~”
Song Ling’er tugged coaxingly at Su Yuanyuan’s arm, flashing a pitiful, endearing expression that made it impossible for anyone to find the heart to refuse her.
“Then that’s settled. Junior Sister will share a room with Miss Song, while Junior Brother and I will stay in the rooms right next to yours. If you run into any danger, just shout out loudly.”
Kuncheng was a melting pot of good and bad elements alike, and with the auction fast approaching, countless outsiders were flooding into the city. One could never be too cautious against potential threats.
Shen Wang patiently offered these instructions, projecting the flawless image of an elder brother deeply protective of his junior disciples.
As the night grew late and heavy dew settled, Su Yuanyuan sat cross-legged upon her bed in meditation, the sword intent circulating within her growing increasingly sharp.
The volume of sword intent emanating from the Tianyuan Sword continued to multiply. If she wished to tame and assimilate this sword intent for her own use, she had to endure the excruciating agony of sword qi tearing through her meridians.
Divine swords possess spiritual awareness; although the Tianyuan Sword had recognized her as its master, should her performance fail to meet the sword’s rigorous standards, it could sever its connection and abandon her body at any moment to choose another.
Throughout Su Yuanyuan’s cultivation session, Song Ling’er remained seated directly across from her, propping her chin on one hand while gazing at her with a gaze brimming with appreciation.
Once she completed three micro-cosmic orbits of sword qi tempering, Su Yuanyuan opened her eyes and immediately locked gazes with Song Ling’er sitting opposite her.
“Is there something on my face? Why are you staring at me like that?”
Frowing slightly in confusion, Su Yuanyuan spoke up. Song Ling’er’s eyes radiated an appreciation entirely devoid of any hidden motives, making her look like an entirely different person compared to the Song Ling’er she had witnessed earlier in the day.
“It’s nothing. I just think Sister Su is extraordinarily pretty that Fan Chen doesn’t deserve someone as wonderful as you~”
Song Ling’er elongated the tail end of her words, her tone brimming with earnest, heartfelt sincerity while wrapped in a soft, coaxing, and spoiled cadence.
“Sister Su is the most gorgeous person I’ve ever laid eyes on, and on top of that, you’re so warm-hearted and righteous. The sight of you rescuing me today was genuinely breathtaking.”
“If it had been anyone else, they never would have stepped in to save me with the kind-hearted grace you showed. Sister Su, you are truly an exceptional person; none of the men in this world are worthy of matching up to you~”
Song Ling’er’s smile grew progressively radiant. She executed no deliberate, seductive gestures whatsoever.
As her soft, cascading hair draped down over her shoulders, the dim, flickering amber candlelight cast a gentle, tender glow across her features.
Su Yuanyuan’s cheeks flushed pink at the praise, causing her to instinctively turn inward to cross-examine herself: had she misjudged Song Ling’er earlier that day? Surely such a wonderful young woman would never pull off the sort of behavior she had exhibited previously.
Perhaps it was simply because she hadn’t seen her childhood playmate in ages, coupled with the lingering shock of narrowly escaping mortal danger, that she had naturally clung a bit too closely to Fan Chen.
Buoyed by this generous wave of flattery, Su Yuanyuan mentally fabricated every conceivable excuse to completely excuse Song Ling’er’s earlier actions.
“Miss Song, I’m nowhere near as wonderful as you make me out to be. Under those circumstances, I’m certain anyone belonging to the righteous path would have stepped up to assist you; I merely did what any cultivator ought to do.”
Blushing crimson, Su Yuanyuan replied with bashful modesty. Having never been the recipient of such sincere, unvarnished praise before, her heart felt as though it had been immersed in a bath of warm water soothing, comforting, and deeply validating.
“In my eyes, Sister Su is precisely that wonderful. It’s getting late, Sister; why don’t we rest for now? Being hunted down by those demonic sect members earlier today gave me quite a fright…”
Song Ling’er trailed off purposefully right at the crucial juncture, lowering her gaze so that the warm, golden candlelight danced across her face. Truly, there is an old saying that beauties look their absolute finest by candlelight.
“Would Sister be willing to sleep beside me tonight? I’m feeling a little scared~”
Slowly lifting her head, Song Ling’er fixed a pair of bright, sparkling eyes brimming with shimmering pools of tears upon Su Yuanyuan, looking profoundly vulnerable and on the verge of weeping.
Without executing any forced theatrics, a delicate flush bloomed naturally at the outer corners of her eyes, pooled tears glistened within her gaze, and an unbreakable resilience etched itself between her brows.
The moment she beheld this expression, Su Yuanyuan’s heart instantly melted into a puddle of sympathy. Promptly shifting aside, she patted the soft, inviting mattress beside her.
“Since you called me sister, it is only natural for me as your elder sister to keep you safe. Come on up and get some proper rest don’t be afraid. With me here, I promise I’ll protect you.”
“Really? Thank you, Sister Su~”
Lighting up with joy, Song Ling’er scrambled out of her chair, scuttled over to Su Yuanyuan’s side, and kicked off her shoes to climb straight onto the bed without ceremony.
“Sister Su smells so nice… I love hugging fragrant big sisters when I sleep.”
Floating in a dizzy haze of flattered warmth, Su Yuanyuan found herself scooped up and embraced tightly within Song Ling’er’s arms.
Having never shared such physical intimacy with anyone else before, Su Yuanyuan experienced a brief moment of bodily stiffness, but within moments, her defenses melted away entirely.
Relaxing completely, she drifted off into a deep, peaceful slumber cradled right against Song Ling’er’s chest.
Only then did Song Ling’er ease herself upward, leaning over to gently exhale a wisp of pale purple vapor directly across Su Yuanyuan’s breathing passages.
“Don’t worry, Sister… I promise I won’t hurt you~”
Resting her forehead against one hand, Song Ling’er reached out with her free hand to gently snag a stray lock of Su Yuanyuan’s hair, bringing it up to the tip of her nose to inhale its scent with quiet intoxication.
