- Chapter 35 - A Dream for You
The evil entity’s body grew smaller and smaller until at last it revealed Xu Ruoci’s swollen, festering face. Fan Xing’s pupils shrank when she saw it, and she struggled to crawl forward.
“Don’t kill her, please…”
Fan Xing had almost been strangled to death by the creature. Her voice was hoarse and weak, barely audible. Whenever she forced herself to speak, faint black mist seeped out from the marks on her neck.
Xiao Qing turned her head and glanced at her. Her slightly lowered eyes showed no change, as lifeless as still water.
“She’s already dead.”
Her voice was still as ethereal and pleasant as before, yet it inexplicably carried a pressure that made it hard to breathe.
Hearing those words, Fan Xing collapsed to the floor. Her face hit the hard ground, leaving a wide patch of red.
“Already… dead?”
She repeated it, her expression full of grief and fear.
“That’s impossible! How can someone just die like that? You’re so powerful—you must have a way to save her, right? Please, save her! I’ll give you as much money as you want.”
Feeling that wasn’t enough, she added quickly: “Not just money. As long as it’s something I can do—anything at all—I’ll give it to you.”
Xiao Qing tilted her head and looked at her for a few seconds. Then she lifted her hand lightly. The black mist surrounding Xu Ruoci’s body was ripped apart once more. The evil spirit was forced out of Xu Ruoci, dissolving back into the haze, and scattered frantically through the room.
Like headless flies, they crashed about in panic, desperate to find an exit. They finally discovered a spot without a talisman and rushed toward it, only to fall right into the trap Xiao Qing had already set.
The slender tendrils of vines tightened like a spiderweb around the black mist, cutting off the spirit’s escape.
The trapped entity let out a painful howl. Xiao Qing frowned in disgust. The vines, empowered by her will, surged with divine force. Very soon the creature made no more sound.
The “web” kept shrinking, the black mist growing thinner until the evil being was reduced to nothing but ashes.
Turning back, Xiao Qing dismissed the vines and walked over to lift the unconscious Yue Xi into her arms. She kissed her softly on the lips.
Yue Xi’s tightly furrowed brow relaxed, and she snuggled closer into Xiao Qing’s embrace, as though searching for a comfortable position to sleep in.
A smile appeared in Xiao Qing’s eyes. Starlight-like glimmers dispelled the cold aura around her.
“Have a beautiful dream.”
After whispering that, she turned to leave. But suddenly she remembered something and glanced back at Fan Xing.
Fan Xing was holding Xu Ruoci’s ruined face in her arms, staring blankly, silent.
Xiao Qing spoke calmly: “Do you really want to save her?”
Fan Xing’s head jerked up. Tears that had been clinging to her lashes finally fell. “Yes! I want to save her!”
One look was enough for Xiao Qing to know what had passed between them. She asked again: “After all she did to you, you don’t hate her?”
Fan Xing was silent for a few seconds, then replied: “I’ve never hated her. I just couldn’t swallow my pride. Even if we become strangers from now on, I still want her to live well.”
After she finished, tears poured down like rain, her eyes red beyond recognition.
Xiao Qing did not understand human emotions. Love and hate seemed too troublesome to her. But Fan Xing had nearly died earlier to save Yue Xi, and she owed her that debt.
“If saving her demanded a huge price from you—even your life—would you still do it?”
Fan Xing froze, then asked in a low voice: “A life for a life?”
“Life for life?” Xiao Qing was silent for a moment. “Something like that.”
Fan Xing lowered her gaze at Xu Ruoci. Her beautiful face had been destroyed by the corruption of evil energy, but Fan Xing knew that if she opened her eyes now, those eyes would still be as bright as before.
Xu Ruoci always called her “Little Star.” But truly, she herself was more like the star—especially her eyes, as if starlight had fallen into them, always shining no matter the time.
In Xiao Qing’s arms, Yue Xi murmured softly. Without waiting for Fan Xing’s decision, Xiao Qing spoke again:
“Then let me first grant you a dream.”
A single green petal drifted down and landed between Fan Xing’s brows. She blinked twice, then her head slowly lowered until it rested against Xu Ruoci’s.
Carrying Yue Xi, Xiao Qing left. The house sank into darkness, the only sound the faint rustling of talisman papers.
It was late at night. A few houses nearby still had their lights on. Perhaps the commotion at Fan Xing’s home had been too great, for the neighbors cursed angrily in complaint.
Sensing something, Xiao Qing glanced westward. Mount Fuyu lay shrouded in the night, like a monster opening its vast jaws to swallow all.
Her delicate brows furrowed slightly, her voice cold: “What exactly are you trying to do?”
Yue Xi didn’t know how she made it back home. When she opened her eyes and saw the familiar chandelier, her mind went blank.
She remembered fighting the evil spirit last night and then fainting. Who had brought her back?
She tried to stretch but found her arm too heavy to lift. Looking down, she saw a furry little head resting in her arms.
No wonder she felt she couldn’t breathe properly. The kitten had come to snuggle again.
Yue Xi chuckled and patted Xiao Qing’s head. Xiao Qing half-opened her eyes, drowsily glanced at her, then burrowed further into her embrace.
Yue Xi had no choice but to be the pillow.
Xiao Qing slept for more than two hours more, waking close to noon.
“Sleep well?”
Yue Xi smiled as she asked and pinched her cheek. Xiao Qing’s expression froze for a moment before she subtly leaned back.
Though the motion was small, Yue Xi still caught the hint of resistance. Usually the kitten was clingy, especially just after waking—loving kisses and cuddles in her arms. Why was she acting differently today?
“Xiao Qing, what’s wrong?”
Xiao Qing’s expression returned to normal. “Nothing. Why do you ask?”
Yue Xi pulled her back into her arms, ruffling her hair like teasing a pet.
“Was it you who brought me back?”
At first Xiao Qing was stiff, but as the warmth of Yue Xi’s touch spread, she relaxed, obediently resting in her embrace.
“Mm.”
Yue Xi thought carefully but found her memory blurry.
So did she defeat the spirit before she passed out?
If it hadn’t been destroyed, they couldn’t possibly have escaped safely. Yet something felt off.
Suddenly there was loud pounding at the door—bang, bang, bang! Xiao Qing jumped up in fright. Yue Xi laughed at her adorable reaction.
“So cute!”
Yue Xi flipped up from the bed, messed up Xiao Qing’s hair with a playful rub, then slipped on her coat and went to open the door.
Xiao Qing’s eyes flickered, the tips of her ears quietly turning red.
At the door stood Ji Shuang, furious, wearing only a bathrobe. Her neck was covered in mottled kiss marks.
“Why did you let Pei Ying send me back?!”
She glared at Yue Xi. Meeting her gaze, she quickly pulled her robe tighter.
“It was an accident…”
She had been so forceful just moments ago, but now her voice was barely a whisper—so faint even she herself wouldn’t believe it.
“You were the one who made the first move on Professor Pei.”
As Yue Xi said it, Ji Shuang looked as if struck by lightning. After a long pause, she stammered: “Impossible. Absolutely impossible!”
“You were drunk—you forced a kiss on her, climbed on top of her, touched her all over, and even—”
“Stop it!”
Ji Shuang cut her off quickly, throwing a panicked glance at Yue Xi before rushing into the room in embarrassment.
Watching her flee, Yue Xi’s lips curved into a wicked smile.
Sister Xi specialized in putting down all kinds of unruliness.
Yawning, she went to wash up in the bathroom. In the mirror, she noticed the marks on her neck—about the size of a fingernail, like mosquito bites.
“Do we have mosquitoes in the house?”
When she finished freshening up and stepped out, she saw a stranger sitting in the living room. The girl wore a casual suit with light makeup, her aura elegant and refined. Her hands rested neatly on her knees, and even sitting, her proportions were flawless.
As Yue Xi entered, the girl stood. Her figure was tall and well-balanced, her long legs eye-catching.
“Hello, I’m Yu Qing from the Daoist Association. Forgive me for visiting unannounced—I hope you don’t mind.”
Actually, she minded quite a lot.
For some reason Yue Xi felt a vague dislike for the Daoist Association. She turned to Xiao Qing: “Why did you let a stranger in so casually? What if she’s dangerous?”
Wasn’t this kid usually wary of strangers?
Xiao Qing hesitated slightly, then said, “I sensed she isn’t a bad person.”
In truth, what she wanted to say was: With just a mortal like her, how could she ever hurt me?
But Yue Xi still didn’t know she had regained her memories, so she kept silent.
Yu Qing’s face remained calm. She carried herself gracefully as she said: “No need to be so wary, Daoist Yue. I’m here because of what happened yesterday.”
She walked over to stand beside Xiao Qing. In that instant, Yue Xi was struck by a sudden realization.
“What did you say your name was?”
“Yu Qing.”
Yue Xi froze. Her breath stopped, her blood turned to ice.
Yu Qing—this book’s real heroine. Xiao Qing’s official pairing. No wonder Xiao Qing had let her in so easily.
There had to be some kind of bond between the two female leads. And now, seeing them side by side, they looked so well matched.
From the beginning, she had been the intruder between them. Now perhaps it was time for everything to return to its rightful place.
Otherwise the plot would collapse, and she would once again meet her end—her body scattered to ashes.
Xiao Qing noticed her silence and tugged on her sleeve. “What’s wrong?”
Yue Xi looked at her beautiful, delicate face. An indescribable emotion welled up inside her.
“Nothing.” Yue Xi smiled. “It’s fine.”
And so begins the long-anticipated “running away with the baby” arc! (No baby, only the running.)
What do you all want to see as Yue Xi’s punishment? But remember—Xiao Qing won’t be the one turning the tables. Feel free to share your thoughts, after all, we’re all just innocent little girls here, hehe.
