- Chapter 28 - I’m Thousands of Years Old
The four of them sat together for a meal. Ji Shuang stared intently at Yue Xi, as if she were looking at a grave criminal.
Pei Ying pushed a boiled egg toward Ji Shuang. She didn’t even glance at it before popping it into her mouth—and immediately choked.
“Cough… cough…”
Harsh coughing echoed through the room. Pei Ying quickly poured her a glass of water and patted her back to help her catch her breath.
Xiao Qing took the opportunity to peck Yue Xi on the cheek, then nonchalantly went back to eating a fried dough stick.
Once Ji Shuang stopped coughing, her gaze flicked between the two of them. She said, “No, we have to go to the police station this afternoon. We need to help Xiao Qing find her parents.”
Xiao Qing took a bite of her dough stick and carefully corrected her, “I don’t have parents, only a brother… but he’s dead.”
Xiao Qing vaguely remembered some things, but that was all.
Outside the hospital, a man holding a bouquet sneezed violently. Afterwards, his beautiful eyes lit up with a faint smile.
“Heartless little thing,” he muttered, amused that a single sentence had left him speechless. He looked down at the camellia flowers in his arms. With a subtle movement of his hand, the bouquet disappeared as if he had never held it at all.
Inside the ward, Ji Shuang listened to Xiao Qing talk about her past and widened her eyes in excitement.
“Qingbao, can you try to remember anything else? Maybe your brother’s name, or your own surname?”
Xiao Qing shook her head, blinking her big eyes innocently at Ji Shuang.
“Shuang sister, don’t you want to live with me? Do you dislike me?”
Ji Shuang’s heart melted at that gaze. She hurriedly replied, “Of course not! I like you very much, Qingbao!”
“Then why do you want to send me away?” Xiao Qing stopped eating, drooping her head like a deflated balloon. Weak, pitiful, and helpless.
Ji Shuang hesitated, wanting to explain: “It’s mainly because I’m worried about Yue Xi… I just don’t want you to get hurt, and I don’t want Yue Xi to do something wrong.”
She naturally hoped to remain lifelong friends with both Yue Xi and Xiao Qing, but if Yue Xi crossed the line, it wouldn’t be trivial.
Xiao Qing looked at her with bright eyes: “I’ll grow up very soon.”
Ji Shuang thought she was comforting her and secretly nudged Yue Xi with a glance, silently warning her.
Yue Xi, feeling intimidated, reluctantly promised she wouldn’t do anything out of line.
Still, they had to go to the police station. Xiao Qing’s family was still missing, but they did hear one “strange” piece of news:
“Zhang Jianhua is dead. I heard it was gruesome; his multi-million-yuan house was soaked in blood.”
“The philanthropist Zhang Jianhua?”
“What philanthropist? He was caught evading taxes and involved in illegal dealings. His fortune has been returned to society.”
The four of them remained silent. Nobody knew the real story better than they did.
Zhang Jianhua was dead. Xiao Jing disappeared. Her grudges dissipated. Fuyu Mountain should no longer be as evil as before, though after all those years, no one wanted to go there anyway.
Still, Yue Xi felt the matter wasn’t completely resolved. Fuyu Mountain would be safer if it remained quiet.
Hearing about Yue Xi getting injured while purifying the villa, the client was concerned. Not only did they promptly pay the balance, they also added a nutrition fee.
After leaving the police station, Pei Ying went to school. Ji Shuang was summoned by the platform manager. Yue Xi and Xiao Qing returned to the hospital, and after a check-up confirming no major issues, they were ready to be discharged.
Xiao Qing pushed open the hospital room door. A faint fragrance drifted into her nose. On the cabinet lay a large bouquet of bluish-purple flowers. She turned to Yue Xi.
“Did you buy these, sister?”
Yue Xi shook her head. In her life, she had never seen flowers like these—they didn’t seem humanly cultivable. She sensed something unusual and decided to be cautious.
Just as she was about to warn Xiao Qing, the girl ran over and hugged the flowers. The bluish-purple blossoms shimmered softly and leaned toward her, as if they had a life of their own.
“They said they missed me,” Xiao Qing said, her big eyes shining with curiosity.
Yue Xi reached out to touch them, but the flowers shied away, preferring Xiao Qing’s embrace.
“They said they missed you?” Yue Xi asked.
Xiao Qing nodded. “Yes, can’t you feel it?”
Yue Xi: …only feeling annoyance.
Xiao Qing hugged the flowers tightly, her mood remaining bright all afternoon.
Yue Xi’s strong body had no major issues. Surprisingly, Xiao Qing recovered quickly as well. Though she looked delicate, her vital signs were even better than Yue Xi’s.
By evening, the two left the hospital. Ji Shuang, delayed by work, called them to eat dinner outside.
Seeing the nearby Haidilao, Yue Xi asked Xiao Qing: “Do you want hotpot?”
Xiao Qing lifted her head from the flowers, more delicate than the blossoms.
“What’s hotpot? Is it good?”
“Extremely delicious. You’ll like it.”
Hearing that it’s tasty, Xiao Qing’s eyes sparkled. She grabbed Yue Xi’s arm. “Let’s go!”
They went to Haidilao. Xiao Qing was curious about everything, like an energetic child. Yue Xi looked at her, unconsciously showing a dot of pampering.
At a nearby table, a family of three sat. The parents were young and elegant; the girl, around fifteen or sixteen, wore her school uniform.
The girl showed little interest in the hotpot, instead staring at Yue Xi and Xiao Qing.
After a while, the girl approached. “Hello, can I get your sister’s contact info?”
Yue Xi looked at her. The girl scratched her head shyly.
“I want to be friends; we’re about the same age.”
Yue Xi didn’t respond and asked Xiao Qing: “Do you want to give it?”
Xiao Qing picked up her phone, opened her WeChat QR code. “Scan it.”
The girl scanned it excitedly. “I’m An Ning. What’s your name?”
“Xiao Qing.” Xiao Qing took back her phone and accepted An Ning’s friend request, adding a note.
An Ning, looking thrilled, returned to her parents. She blushed, probably telling them everything excitedly.
Suddenly, the hotpot seemed less appetizing to Yue Xi. Seeing her expression, Xiao Qing asked: “Sister, what’s wrong?”
Yue Xi, holding back, finally said, “Why did you add her?”
“Making friends. Shuang sister says we shouldn’t live in isolation,” Xiao Qing replied.
Yue Xi pursed her lips. “You don’t have to listen to her. If you don’t want to add her, that’s fine. Your happiness is most important.”
Xiao Qing took a bite of seaweed and puffed her cheeks: “I don’t mind. She seems nice. She can be my first friend.”
You’re so young, yet you already know what’s good… Yue Xi sipped her sour plum juice to calm her mood.
Later, the family finished eating and left. Passing by, An Ning waved: “Xiao Qing, can we hang out sometime?”
Xiao Qing, expressionless: “Sure.”
An Ning’s excitement was clear: “Goodbye, Xiao Qing! Goodbye, sister!”
Yue Xi frowned. That little brat, who even called her sister!
The hotpot tasted utterly bland after that. Back home, Ji Shuang immediately noticed Yue Xi’s mood.
“Why so glum? Didn’t you just take Xiao Qing to Haidilao?”
Yue Xi replied calmly, “Nothing. I’m going to shower.”
She went straight to her room. Ji Shuang thought it was fine; she often wore her displeasure on her face.
Xiao Qing fiddled with her phone, seemingly chatting with someone.
“Xiao Qing, what’s wrong with your sister?”
“I made a new friend. She seems unhappy about it.”
Ji Shuang arched her brow, smiling: “Making friends is good. Don’t worry about your sister; she’ll feel better tomorrow.”
“Really?” Xiao Qing asked.
“Of course. Shuang sister never lies.”
Xiao Qing relaxed, stopping her hand from deleting An Ning’s WeChat.
Yue Xi stayed in her room, taking out books on drawing talismans, forming and breaking arrays, whenever her mood was unsettled.
As night fell, the room dimmed. Yue Xi rubbed her sore eyes and turned on the light.
Something flashed in the corner, like a wisp of smoke, moving so fast even her skills couldn’t track it.
Someone—or something—was watching her.
Yue Xi contemplated, setting protective talismans around the room and placing a barrier on the entire house. This would prevent ordinary evil spirits from approaching.
Just as she closed her book, the door opened. A small head peeked in timidly.
“Can I come in, sister?”
Yue Xi smirked: “Wouldn’t you come in anyway if I said no?”
Xiao Qing boldly entered, leaning on the table to look at Yue Xi.
“Are you still angry, sister?”
Yue Xi, expression neutral: “I’m not angry.”
Xiao Qing noticed the stack of talismans on the desk and immediately understood. When her sister was in a bad mood, she drew talismans—and pretended not to be angry.
“If you don’t like her, I’ll delete her.”
Yue Xi couldn’t explain why, but felt uneasy. Later, she realized it was jealousy.
A twenty-something-year-old woman, jealous of a high school student. Quite a headache.
She wanted to explain, but Xiao Qing suddenly leaned forward and planted a kiss on her cheek.
Yue Xi: “…Xiao Qing, do you know what that means?”
Xiao Qing looked at her from less than a centimeter away.
“This will make you happy, sister.”
Yue Xi supported herself with one hand on the table, lowering her gaze. “Only very close people can do this. Don’t do it again.”
“Are we not close, sister?”
“I don’t mean that… I mean… if your other friends are unhappy, will you do this for them too?”
“No, I only do this for you.”
Xiao Qing’s clear, bright eyes contained only her. Yue Xi couldn’t help but kiss her lips.
This little thing kept teasing her, shaking her heart.
Well… let it be unstable. Anyway, she wouldn’t let anyone else have her.
They kissed for a long while. Yue Xi suddenly realized she had to stop before things went too far. She pulled Xiao Qing into her arms.
Xiao Qing’s eyes misty, she looked up at her. Yue Xi’s heart pounded faster with each glance.
“Baby, when will you grow up?”
Soon, soon… very soon. If not, I’ll find another way.
