- Chapter 15 - The Three Great "Ominous Places"
The sun had already set, and the sky was gradually darkening. The surrounding trees and plants felt chilling, carrying moist water vapor.
It was still a desolate and eerie silence; there was no sound at all. But Yue xi knew there were many dangers in this forest and that she had to get down the mountain as quickly as possible.
Legend had it that Feng Mountain was once a place where deities lived, so it was filled with spiritual energy. Except for a few fated Taoists, ordinary people could only ever glimpse a small part of it in their entire lives.
After the passage of time and great changes, not many people today knew that the world of mysterious Taoist arts still existed. This divine mountain also became unremarkable, no different from any other mountain in the world.
People couldn’t venture deep into the heart of Feng Mountain, but they always found ways to make use of it. For example, the guesthouses at the foot of the mountain, the parts of the mountain that weren’t sealed off and were developed into tourist attractions, and the series of things that stemmed from them.
As long as it could make money, there was nothing humans couldn’t do.
Yue xi held Xiaoqing’s hand and walked toward the dimly lit area, feeling a bit anxious. If she remembered correctly, they had already walked in circles here three or four times.
When she first returned to the starting point, she thought she had chosen the wrong direction, so she changed her path and continued walking. After about half an hour, she returned to the same spot. From then on, no matter which direction she walked, she would end up back here.
The forest was vast and deep, and even the grass grew exceptionally lush, almost swallowing Xiaoqing, who was a head shorter than her.
Yue xi stopped and looked around. The trees all looked the same. If she hadn’t made a mark, she wouldn’t have been able to tell one from another. She touched the marks she had carved with her peach wood sword. There were five of them, more than she had expected.
Xiaoqing peered out, her big eyes asking, “What’s wrong?”
Yue xi said calmly, “It seems we’ve run into a ‘ghost wall’.”
Xiaoqing was clearly startled. She looked around, then moved closer to Yue xi, clutching her arm tightly.
Her frightened, kitten-like demeanor triggered Yue xi’s protective instincts. She slipped an exorcism charm into Xiaoqing’s hand and said, “Don’t be afraid. Stay by my side, and small spirits won’t be able to get close to you.”
Feng Mountain was rich in spiritual energy, making it a very suitable place for cultivation, but this also meant that it could give birth to other things, such as the spirits that had troubled Xiaoqing before, and other lonely ghosts.
However, on this journey, apart from being stuck in a loop, they had not encountered any other obstacles. From this, Yue xi could conclude that the small spirits probably didn’t dare to bother them. But this didn’t mean they were safe; instead, it felt like the calm before a storm.
Yue xi had a premonition that if they didn’t get out soon, when the yin energy was at its peak around midnight, they might encounter something they couldn’t handle.
Xiaoqing clutched the exorcism charm in her hand and seemed to calm down a bit. She asked again, “Can’t we get out?”
Yue xi glanced at her. Her round, apricot-shaped eyes were clear and bright, and the starlight within them couldn’t be hidden even by the dim light. All of a sudden, Yue xi wanted to tease this innocent girl.
“If I said we couldn’t get out, would you be scared?”
“No.” Xiaoqing replied almost instinctively. “As long as I’m with Sister, Xiaoqing isn’t afraid of anything.”
Yue xi’s expression froze for a moment. She reached out and ruffled Xiaoqing’s hair. “Why are you so well-behaved?”
Xiaoqing let her ruffle her hair like a docile cat, still smiling even when her hair was messy.
Yuexi then raised her hand to form a new array, a simpler one this time, just enough to find a way out.
This time was no exception. The array shattered before it could even fully form.
Damn it!
Yuexi almost swore, but she looked at the innocent Xiaoqing beside her and held back.
Xiaoqing’s eyes darted around, and she pointed in one direction, saying, “Why don’t we go this way?”
Yue xi looked. This direction was the opposite of the way down the mountain, and thick fog shrouded both sides, making it impossible to see the path ahead. For this reason, she had deliberately avoided it the previous few times.
When Xiaoqing suggested it, Yue xi suddenly thought of something and pulled Xiaoqing to walk in the direction she had pointed. Since all other directions weren’t a way out, going against the flow might be a valid strategy, and they might even have an unexpected gain.
This wasn’t a path. The mugwort grass was taller than a person and lush, so they had to push it aside to walk. But Yuexi was holding Xiaoqing’s hand with one hand and carrying her bag with the peach wood sword in the other, making it difficult.
The mugwort they pushed aside returned to its original position after they passed, making a rustling sound that was especially noticeable in the empty forest.
Xiaoqing gripped Yue xi’s hand tightly, trying her best to clear the obstacles in front of them. Soon, her fair hands were stained green with mugwort juice, and her sleeves became damp.
Yue xi wanted her to hold onto her sleeve so she could free a hand to cut the grass, but as soon as she let go a little, Xiaoqing gripped her hand tightly. “Sister, I’m scared!”
Just as she said that, a strange sound suddenly came from the side. The young girl was so frightened that she threw herself into Yue xi’s arms. Yuexi, unprepared, took a step back. The ground beneath her feet felt soft, as if she had stepped on cotton.
What was that? She looked down, and a layer of thick fog suddenly blew up from the ground. As far as the eye could see, everything was a blanket of white. Fortunately, Xiaoqing was still by her side.
Xiaoqing was holding her arm, her voice tearful. “Did I point the wrong way?”
Yue xi tentatively took a step forward. The ground was solid. “It’s okay. We can definitely get out.”
Xiaoqing didn’t answer and seemed to have fallen into a state of self-blame. Yue xi could almost imagine her crumpled, guilty little face. A subtle smile appeared in her eyes, and she squeezed Xiaoqing’s hand.
“Trust me, okay?”
Xiaoqing squeezed back. Her voice was slightly less dejected. “Okay.”
Yue xi led Xiaoqing forward, the peach wood sword held horizontally in front of them. She didn’t dare to relax for a second. The fog brought a chilling dampness. Their clothes instantly became sticky and heavy. After walking for a while, both of their clothes were completely soaked, with water dripping from their sleeves and hems, as if they had been forced to take a bath.
The exorcism charm in her hand moved. Xiaoqing suddenly stopped and said to Yuexi, “Sister, be careful.”
Yue xi had already seen it—a pair of crimson eyes glowing in the depths of the thick fog.
She was surprised. How could she suddenly see the evil spirit? Previously, she could only see them in specific places, such as a “gate of life” or an illusion. Now she could see a disguised ghost at a glance. Was it because her cultivation had improved?
The fog grew colder. The pair of eyes flickered. Even from this distance, Yue xi could see the malevolence and greed within them. She gathered her thoughts, placing all her attention on this powerful malevolent spirit.
“No one can leave this place alive.”
A rough, eerie voice came. Yue xi’s expression changed. She shielded Xiaoqing behind her, turned her wrist, and the peach wood sword emitted a cold, clear light. “You’ll have to ask the sword in my hand about that.”
Xiaoqing hid behind her, quietly asking, “Sister, who are you talking to?”
Yue xi knew she couldn’t see it, so she decided not to add to her mental burden. “It’s nothing. If anything happens later, just find a safe place to hide.”
“But what about you?” Xiaoqing clearly didn’t want to leave her.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. Be a good girl, okay?”
Xiaoqing nodded, very obediently.
Yue xi threw the exorcism charm in her hand. The malevolent spirit was caught off guard and wailed. This enraged it. It roared and charged at Yuexi, black energy seeping from its crimson eyes.
Yue xi brandished her peach wood sword to block, seizing the opportunity to give Xiaoqing a chance to escape. But the little girl didn’t run. Instead, she threw the exorcism charm in her hand, hitting the malevolent spirit accurately. The evil spirit howled again.
Yue xi used this opening to quickly form a seal to suppress the malevolent spirit, preparing to capture it. She was actually a bit confused. This guy seemed to have high spiritual power, but its combat was so weak. Was it all for show?
The malevolent spirit gathered its power, trying to break through her incantation, but a force forcefully pulled it away, and it disappeared without a trace.
Yue xi: “?” What’s going on?
Instantly, the fog that had obscured their view dissipated. The path they were on was the same one Yue xi had been trying to take down the mountain earlier. The lights of the guesthouse at the foot of the mountain also became clear. Although they weren’t very bright, they had a touch of warmth.
They were finally in the normal world, Yue xi thought to herself, pulling Xiaoqing to move quickly.
Halfway up the mountain, there were rooms for tourists to rest. They were ancient-style buildings, but there were spiderwebs inside and a buildup of dust, making them look abandoned for a long time. Yuexi glanced inside and decided to go around them. Usually, nothing good happened in places like these.
Just as the two of them came around the side, a white light appeared in front of them.
“What is that?!” a clear female voice rang out. The person was clearly startled, her voice trembling a bit.
Yue xi hadn’t even replied when she heard the person say, “Folks, get those gifts rolling in! Sister Shuang is here today to show you one of the three great ‘ominous places’ of Ming City!”
