- Chapter 15 - Be Normal
When the banquet ended and Wen Zisu’s group returned home, it was nearly ten o’clock. Su Mi was nestled in the living room sofa watching online classes on the TV. Hearing the sound at the door, Su Ciyu walked in carrying a fast-asleep Su Yi.
Su Mi paused the video and leaned forward to take a look.
Su Yi’s little face was flushed from sleep as he lay in Su Ciyu’s arms, tucked under a small blanket.
Su Mi reached out and gave him a secret poke. Su Yi let out two soft hums in his sleep, and his small hand reached out, waving in the air.
Su Ciyu said, “Xiao Yi just fell asleep in the car. Don’t bother him.”
Su Mi hid her hands behind her back and nodded obediently.
Wen Zisu came in behind them and was surprised to find Su Mi waiting in the living room. Lowering his voice, he asked, “Yaya, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Su Mi: “I wanted to try waiting for you to get back. Since you’re here, I’ll go up to sleep right away.”
She turned off the TV and followed Su Ciyu. She originally intended to head upstairs with them, but she heard Su Ciyu let out a sound of surprise.
Su Ciyu asked, “How was Shen Han… today?”
How was she what?
Su Mi blinked, saying uncertainly, “How was she? She seemed the same as usual. She even sent me back tonight.”
Su Ciyu turned to Wen Zisu and said, “Zisu, turn off your blocker and take a sniff.”
Wen Zisu touched the blocking ring on his neck. After turning it off, he leaned close to Su Mi and sniffed lightly.
Immediately, he let out a “hiss,” leaned back a few steps, and pressed several buttons on the blocking ring.
Both of them looked at Wen Zisu.
Wen Zisu frowned, thought for a moment, and said, “There is a scent of restlessness, but it shouldn’t be pheromones; it’s just a fluctuation of spiritual power.”
Su Ciyu sighed. “Let’s go upstairs first.”
Su Ciyu took Su Yi to his nursery, while Su Mi was led into the master bedroom by Wen Zisu.
Wen Zisu took out a measuring instrument. He had Su Mi sit in a chair, peeled off the blocking patch on the back of her neck, and removed the earring.
In an instant, the air in the room seemed to come alive.
Among the scents, two were particularly distinct. Su Mi twitched her nose.
Wen Zisu smiled. “Can you smell it? Your mother’s pheromones and mine.”
In this world, blood relatives have much lower sensitivity to each other’s pheromones, but perhaps because they were in the bedroom where the parents lived, Su Mi captured a few lingering traces in the air despite the house’s purification system.
It was a bit like wood, and also a bit like sweet milk.
This was likely the scent of their pheromones.
This was the first time since she arrived in this world that she had come into contact with someone else’s pheromones.
Su Mi hadn’t even figured out what her own pheromones smelled like.
On the first night she arrived, she wasn’t yet wearing the pheromone-blocking earring every day. Therefore, while following the system’s tutorial to change the blocking patch before bed, Su Mi had vaguely smelled a bit of her own pheromones.
It seemed to be a sweet, fresh scent of vegetation.
She didn’t know much about plants and couldn’t name the specific botanical term for the scent.
Now, smelling her parents’ pheromones, Su Mi reached a simple and pleasant conclusion: her own scent was like a combination of her parents.
Ah, a combination.
Su Mi narrowed her eyes, quite happy, and nodded to Wen Zisu.
At the same time, she asked the system in her mind: “You said this body is still my own. What about the pheromones?”
System: “Pheromones are emitted from the glands of your own body, so of course they belong to you, however…”
The system lagged for a moment.
On this side, Wen Zisu said, “Your mother is the scent of cypress, and I am a rather ordinary milk scent.”
Su Mi blinked curiously. “What about me?”
Wen Zisu smiled slightly and said helplessly, “I’ve been too busy catching up on your Beta files to have time for a pheromone identification. We’ll do it when we’re free next time.”
“Okay,” Su Mi remembered her parents’ conversation just now and couldn’t help but ask curiously, “Father, what were you and Mother talking about earlier?”
Wen Zisu slapped his forehead and picked up the ring-shaped instrument sitting nearby.
“Your mother is more sensitive to these things. She thought you were stained with Shen Han’s Alpha pheromones, but fortunately, it’s just some traces of spiritual power fluctuations. I’ll measure it to see if your own spiritual power has been affected.”
Wen Zisu placed the instrument over Su Mi’s head, with a strange groove on the device fitting over the center of her brow.
She felt almost nothing. Su Mi tilted her head back, and after Wen Zisu finished fitting it, he began operating his light computer.
While operating, Wen Zisu explained to Su Mi: “Your differentiation didn’t go very well. Both your glands and your spiritual power are a bit fragile. Otherwise, pretending to be a Beta wouldn’t have gone so smoothly. This is also why we restricted you from going out after you differentiated. There are too many uncertain factors outside, especially when meeting Alphas with stronger spiritual power; their fluctuations can easily affect you.”
Su Mi froze for a moment and instinctively asked, “Would a Double-S like Elder Sister have an effect?”
Wen Zisu shook his head and said, “At her high level, it actually won’t be a problem. She just went to the hospital a few days ago for a regular check-up for her approaching heat period. That should be the reason for the spiritual power fluctuations. Don’t worry.”
Su Mi nodded ignorantly.
It seemed Wen Zisu’s company was responsible for the medical business under the Shen Group; no wonder he was so confident.
Could it be that he also knew something about the inside story of Shen Han’s “heart disease”?
But Wen Zisu’s attention had returned to the light screen. At the same time, there were two knocks on the bedroom door, and Su Ciyu asked from outside, “Is it done?”
Wen Zisu unfastened the measuring instrument from her head. While Su Mi put on the blocking patch and the earring, she watched Wen Zisu open the door.
Su Ciyu walked in, stroked the top of Su Mi’s head, and took Wen Zisu’s light screen to check it.
Wen Zisu said, “The values still haven’t reached the standard line.”
Su Ciyu gave an “en” in response. “Be careful when you’re outside. Come home early every day, you understand?”
Sitting between the two of them and facing the instructions from both sides, Su Mi responded obediently, “Okay.”
She was the picture of obedience.
Then she was sent back to her own room.
Sitting at her desk, Su Mi first checked her chat box with Xu Nanqiao.
After arriving home, she had immediately sent a tip-off to Xu Nanqiao, briefly explaining the encounter with the Yang family when she went out, and telling her that the Yangs might go to her to plead for mercy in the next few days.
Furthermore, Su Mi very thoughtfully reminded her: Elder Sister is worried about your safety and said she would send people to protect you. Be careful when you go out these next few days ^^.
But Xu Nanqiao didn’t plan to sit and wait for death. She proactively asked Su Mi for Yang Er’s contact information.
Su Mi was a bit worried at first, but after doing some practice problems for a while, she realized that the female lead probably didn’t want the Yang family to find her home.
After all, the female lead lived in one of those old residential areas with close-knit neighbors. If the Yang family found their way to her door and made a scene like they did today—using moral kidnapping to force her to forgive them—it would likely be very troublesome.
And…
Recalling the original plot where the female lead’s mother interfered in all sorts of ways, Su Mi shrunk her neck.
It was better to let Xu Nanqiao handle it herself.
She left a message for Xu Nanqiao: Tell me when it’s handled.
Xu Nanqiao: Mm-hmm, I will.
Before sleeping, she scrolled through her phone and instinctively clicked on the chat box with Shen Han.
The latest message was still the several clips of “how to pursue someone” that she had sent to Shen Han.
Perhaps the villain was busy again, so she hadn’t replied.
However…
Su Mi checked the Blackening Value, and her eyes lit up.
The current Blackening Value was only 80%!
That was two percentage points lower than when she finished studying and went downstairs.
During this time, the only thing related to Xu Nanqiao was her own “persuasions” that dropped hints here and there.
So Shen Han actually bought into this? On the surface, she seemed like she didn’t want to listen or look, but in reality, she had heard everything and had likely been “inspired” by her?
In a moment of excitement, Su Mi decided to strike while the iron was hot.
She carefully searched through the database provided by the system. After repeated screening, she sent to Shen Han:
It’s Too Late to Know at 25! Ten Sentences to Take You Into the Inner World of an Omega
A List of the Top Ten “Chasing the Wife in the Crematorium” Tropes in Literature
Regret: If Only I Had Known I Loved Her
This time, Shen Han replied very quickly.
Shen Han: [Image]
Clicking on the image, it was a screenshot of the “Block” button in their chat.
Su Mi: “…”
She listened to everything, so why is she still so fierce?
Su Mi immediately replied with a “silence” emoji.
Following that, she sent a “Goodnight.”
She added sneakily: Sister, I’m bringing Nanqiao over next Saturday, okay ^^?
Shen Han: En.
Ending the conversation, the Blackening Value did not change, still staying at 80%.
Su Mi turned off the light computer screen, tucked herself into her warm bed, and hummed happily.
This week’s task was once again successfully completed. Next, she just had to wait for next week’s fixed plot point.
She mentally reviewed the event where the male and female leads would cross paths next week and soon drifted into a dream.
At the same time, on the other side, Shen Han had just come out of the ball court of a private club. She let out a soft breath and wiped away her sweat.
Secretary Zhuang stood to the side and handed over the work plan for the next day.
Shen Han flipped through it, picked out the key meetings, and after giving a few instructions, she hesitated for a moment.
“Wait a minute.” She called out to Secretary Zhuang, who was about to leave.
The lights of the court behind her had been extinguished. It was early spring and slightly chilly; the dark trees outside stood in cold silence.
In the midst of the night’s chill, Shen Han paused and tried saying, “Have you noticed? Su Mi seems a bit different since her differentiation.”
“…”
Secretary Zhuang thought for a moment. “A little, but…”
He spoke carefully: “But Miss Su has always been very attentive toward you. From my perspective, there isn’t much difference from before. Did you notice something when you postponed the meeting to send Miss Su home today?”
Shen Han denied it. “No.”
She lowered her eyes and silently thought back to Su Mi’s performance today.
Indeed, as Secretary Zhuang said, Su Mi had always been very attentive, but there was something different before and after differentiation.
Before differentiation, she could clearly see the ambition and greed in the girl’s eyes; everything she did was for the benefits Shen Han provided to the Su family.
As the person in power of the Shen Group, Shen Han was surrounded by too many such people. People with desires were the easiest to control; keeping them around to play with was fine, as long as they could complete the tasks she arranged.
But now, things were different.
The clear sense of purpose from before had disappeared, replaced by something else.
She was no longer as transparent as before; Shen Han didn’t even know what she was trying to do.
Shen Han thought about Su Mi’s behavior.
The suddenly closer relationship with Xu Nanqiao, the “clumsy mimicry” of being well-behaved, the inexplicable talk about “liking”…
While she was deep in thought, Secretary Zhuang suddenly said, “Actually, Miss Su did say some strange things to me today as well.”
Shen Han raised her eyes and looked at Secretary Zhuang.
Secretary Zhuang spoke in a flat narrative: “She seemed to say that you don’t have any other Omegas around you, and that her being by your side is unique… things like that.”
Seeing that Shen Han didn’t respond, Secretary Zhuang continued, “I comforted Miss Su, saying that in your heart she is indeed unique. Afterwards, Miss Su seemed a bit dazed and even said it’s been a long time since she’s seen you happy.”
“…Come to think of it, Miss Su seems to care very much about the fact that she differentiated into a Beta.”
Speaking up to this point, Secretary Zhuang suddenly felt like he had discovered the correct answer and opened his mouth dully.
Before he could think it through, he quickly cleared himself of involvement.
“I don’t know anything else. After all, my personal friendship with Miss Su isn’t deep.”
Shen Han: “…”
She couldn’t help but glance at her capable secretary, who was quite famous in the capital’s business circles.
“Be normal.”
She understood Secretary Zhuang’s deduction, but she didn’t believe it.
Frowning, Shen Han said, “Send me another copy of the test report from that day, as well as the pheromone detection report for the room.”
Secretary Zhuang respectfully agreed. He hesitated for a moment and asked, “Do you want to conduct any further tests?”
Shen Han gave a noncommittal “um.”
“We’ll see.”
