- Chapter 13 - The Yang Family
Su Mi stared at Shen Han in a near daze, her mind going blank. She gazed at her for a while until she suddenly felt as if she were falling into the swirling vortex of those icy blue pools. Suddenly, she heard Shen Han ask:
“What are you doing here?”
“Ri… riding a bike,” Su Mi answered subconsciously.
She immediately realized she had just uttered a piece of meaningless nonsense.
Shen Han glanced at her and said, “Since when did you develop a stutter?”
Su Mi gripped the handlebars, her other hand instinctively scratching the side of her face, feeling that she had likely become an utter fool in Shen Han’s eyes.
Trying to salvage the situation, she explained: “Didn’t Secretary Zhuang bring me out to watch the sunset? But he suddenly had an emergency, so he told me to go on ahead. I was just wandering around Nanyuan and ended up here.”
Shen Han let out a hum, though it was impossible to tell if she believed her or not. She asked, “Where did he recommend?”
Su Mi let go of the handlebars and leaned closer to the car window, extending her slender, white wrist to show Shen Han the picture on her optical computer.
“It’s here, it seems to be an open space with a fountain.”
Shen Han tilted her head to look and said, “This isn’t the best viewing spot in Nanyuan. The best place is on the side of the nearby mountain. Secretary Zhuang has already sent Xu Nanqiao back. I’ll take you there.”
Su Mi: ???
She looked at the woman with the cold, pale face inside the car in disbelief. The latter also looked up at her, her eyes indifferent, and asked, “What is it?”
For a moment, Su Mi didn’t know what to say.
After all her hard work to give Shen Han and Xu Nanqiao time alone, how could she… So, Secretary Zhuang was sent back by Shen Han?
Wait, has this person really not had her “awakening” yet?
Su Mi couldn’t help but secretly scrutinize Shen Han.
From the tips of her hair to the point of her chin, her face was absolutely perfect—aside from her expression being a bit cold, her demeanor a bit unapproachable, and the words coming out of her mouth being a bit poisonous.
She looked exactly like the type of CEO from the novels the system had been showing her lately: the kind who grew up lacking nothing and therefore didn’t know how to love, or even realize they had fallen for someone.
Fine, if she hasn’t awakened, she hasn’t awakened.
Su Mi unconsciously let out a sigh.
When she snapped back to her senses, she realized that while she had been scrutinizing Shen Han, the latter had actually been calmly allowing Su Mi to stare.
It wasn’t until she saw Su Mi come to and sigh that Shen Han spoke up, asking, “Have you seen enough?”
Her tone was thin and cool.
Su Mi suddenly felt a flash of animal-like intuition, sensing that Shen Han’s mood was currently quite off.
The polite refusal that was on the tip of her tongue did a half-turn and transformed into a sycophantic, bright-eyed exclamation: “Enough, enough! I’m so sorry. Sister, your beauty is more stunning than the sunset. Just thinking that you are willing to take me to see the sunset, and that I can sit by your side to appreciate the last rays of the sun, feels like an incomparable honor!”
Shen Han: “…”
Su Mi looked at Shen Han expectantly.
She knew herself well; while she wasn’t great at flattery, she was very good at showing loyalty.
As long as she stared with these sincere, earnest eyes for ten seconds, the other party would surely—
Shen Han narrowed her eyes, lifted her chin slightly, and said, “In that case, don’t get in the car. Keep up.”
Before Su Mi’s hopeful gaze, the car window began to darken. Shen Han’s sharp, beautiful jawline disappeared behind the glass.
The privacy function activated, leaving only Su Mi’s own reflection on the window.
In the reflection, the young girl with pale gold hair looked stunned, her face full of question marks.
Su Mi: ???
A total Waterloo!
Su Mi wailed inwardly, while simultaneously marveling that the big boss villain lived up to her reputation—she had absolutely no reaction to her brown-nosing.
Perhaps she was even disgusted; otherwise, why would she make her ride a bike behind her alone?—even though the bike required absolutely no effort to pedal.
Watching the low-profile black business car slowly start up, Su Mi obediently hopped onto her assisted bike.
Waving enthusiastically toward the back seat where Shen Han likely was, Su Mi followed the vehicle toward the main gate of Nanyuan.
As they left the gate, Su Mi glanced back and noticed Shen Han’s car had stopped briefly. A security guard came out of the booth and leaned down to say something to those inside the car.
Since she still needed Shen Han to lead the way, Su Mi also stopped her bike.
Outside the main gate was a circular flower bed, and behind the corner, several cars seemed to be parked.
Why would cars be parked here? Did they want to visit Nanyuan?
Su Mi tilted her head, watching the car doors open as several people stepped out.
The leaders seemed to be a middle-aged couple, followed by a shorter girl and several people who looked like bodyguards and relatives.
They were heading straight for the gate of Nanyuan.
Su Mi stared at them for a moment, then suddenly gripped her handlebars.
She turned and quickly pedaled her assisted bike back toward the Nanyuan security booth.
The girl following behind them had a face that couldn’t be more familiar—she was one of the original host’s “squad” members, the one named Yang Er who had come to find her after school yesterday.
However, the group behind her was also fast. Before Su Mi could even stop her bike, a girl’s shout came from behind.
“Su Su!”
Yang Er ran up panting, her posture delicate and her eyes brimming with tears. As soon as she got close, she grabbed Su Mi’s wrist.
She choked back a sob and said, “Su Su, meeting you—meeting you here is truly wonderful. I wonder if you could take us inside to see President Shen?”
Su Mi was stunned. See Shen Han?
She’s right there in the car next to us.
Since she had already been caught, Su Mi reluctantly stopped. She glanced back toward the black business car parked a short distance away.
The windows were tightly shut.
But she was likely watching the commotion.
“Su Su, I beg of you. The guards here won’t let us in, and we can’t get in touch with President Shen. We don’t mean anything else…”
Yang Er pleaded piteously, gripping Su Mi’s wrist tightly.
As she spoke, the rest of the Yang family caught up.
If she remembered correctly, their family was in the garment industry. They had made a fortune elsewhere before moving to the capital to develop. In recent years, because they had latched onto the Su family and some connections with the Shen family, they had indeed flourished.
One could tell just by their clothes—they were covered from head to toe in luxury brand logos.
Seeing that Yang Er had caught Su Mi, Mother Yang also crowded in, clutching her handbag with a pleading expression. “Miss Su, I really beg of you. Our Yang Er has always been on good terms with you. You… you know her. She hasn’t had a bad bone in her body since she was a child. This time, she only did a small thing wrong. We are sincerely here to apologize to President Shen.”
“Yes, yes, Su Su, you know me. We’ve had a good relationship these past few years, haven’t we? I… I really didn’t think that much of it…”
Yang Er spoke urgently, appearing as if she might collapse at any moment.
Su Mi: “…”
Only then did she realize that the incident had been Yang Er’s doing.
No wonder she had come to test the waters after school yesterday.
She had probably heard that Su Mi had asked Shen Han to investigate the matter and felt she couldn’t bear the consequences, so she came to beg for mercy…
But why apologize to Shen Han? Wasn’t the victim of this incident Xu Nanqiao?
Su Mi frowned and said, “This matter has nothing to do with Sister. If you want to apologize, you should go find Xu Nanqiao, shouldn’t you? She’s the Omega who was almost harmed.”
Father Yang hurried over, wiping non-existent sweat from the side of his face. “Of course, of course, we definitely want to apologize to that student. However, regarding President Shen’s side…”
Mother Yang hurriedly interrupted Father Yang. “Miss Su, you don’t know. President Shen won’t see us at all, and she even sent word suggesting that our family should leave the capital… You—you even attended the opening of our SUYO store. You know how hard it has been for our family in the capital. We just thought to ask you to take us to see President Shen…”
As she spoke, Mother Yang also grabbed Su Mi’s arm.
Su Mi was almost besieged by the mother and daughter. Seeing the two enlarged faces in front of her, she felt goosebumps rising where she was being touched. She quickly shook them off and took two steps back.
She truly didn’t understand. She said, “Actions must have consequences. Yang Er, you are also an Omega. Put yourself in her shoes. If you were surrounded by a dozen or so shady… Alpha pheromones, would you want to let the culprit go?”
Yang Er went blank for a moment, seemingly not having considered this perspective. She stammered, “Ah… I…”
Mother Yang said hurriedly, “She—she knows she was wrong. She just turned eighteen; she’s completely ignorant. Maybe those people acted on their own? Miss Su, you and Yang Er have such a good relationship; you naturally know she wouldn’t even dare to swat a bug normally. How could she dare to do such things? Someone must have egged her on, and she didn’t think much of it herself…”
She reached behind her and pinched Yang Er. The latter immediately burst into tears.
Yang Er sobbed, “Yes, I really didn’t think that much. I just wanted to teach Xu Nanqiao a lesson. I… I also wanted to do it for your sake.”
“Please don’t. I can’t afford your illegal ‘for my sake,'” Su Mi waved her hand, somewhat speechless. “Whether you did it for yourself or for me—did you think I wouldn’t know about those little schemes of yours? I seriously told you all to be nicer to Xu Nanqiao. I didn’t expect you would not only fail to listen but also completely twist my meaning.”
Father Yang said urgently, “Miss Su, that—that isn’t important. Yang Er did indeed do wrong. We spoiled her until she didn’t know the height of the sky or the depth of the earth… Yang Er!”
As he spoke, Father Yang actually turned and gave Yang Er a resounding slap.
Slap!
The side of Yang Er’s face immediately turned red. She clutched her cheek, her fake crying coming to an abrupt halt as real tears immediately fell from her eyes.
Then, pressed down by Father Yang’s hand on her shoulder, she fell heavily to her knees.
Father Yang bowed to Su Mi, a fawning smile appearing on his chubby, wealthy merchant face. “This matter is indeed our family’s fault. We just want to see President Shen to explain in person and offer some compensation. We ask you to show mercy and take us in to see President Shen.”
Su Mi took a step back, looking at Yang Er kneeling on the ground, being pressed down by her parents while clutching her face and sobbing. For a moment, it felt quite surreal.
Su Mi said, “Maybe you should find another way yourselves.”
She really didn’t want to get involved in this mess, especially since the big boss was watching the play from the car nearby. If this family started spouting nonsense and dragged her into it, it wouldn’t be worth it.
Just as she was about to find her bike and leave, Yang Er seemed to have realized something. She actually crawled forward two steps on her knees, grabbing the hem of Su Mi’s skirt while crying, “Miss Su, please help… I don’t want to go back to D City…”
Su Mi was startled and quickly reached out to hold her skirt down. “No, no! Have some self-respect!”
She had quite a headache. Watching Yang Er continue to sob and plead, while Father and Mother Yang prattled on for mercy, and the bodyguards and relatives following the Yangs closed in, the quiet entrance of Nanyuan suddenly turned into a vegetable market.
Su Mi was overwhelmed, retreating repeatedly. Her wrist was grabbed again by Mother Yang, who was hurriedly saying something about begging for just one meeting.
Su Mi thought to herself: The person you’re looking for is in the car right there; why are you bothering me?
Just then, a voice like a cold spring came from the side.
“How long is this scene going to last?”
The people surrounding Su Mi suddenly parted like the Red Sea. The grip on Su Mi’s wrist lightened, and her hand was caught by another icy, pale hand. She was pulled back, stumbling until she was shielded behind Shen Han.
