- After Transmigrating Into a Book, I Was Hooked by the Protagonist Gong
- Chapter 2 - Sick?
This guy was seriously slow on the uptake his comprehension skills left a lot to be desired.
Tang Yu’s original intention had been for the guy to just help untangle his pants from the fence railing. Instead, the dude had gone through the extra effort of lifting Tang Yu up and carrying him down entirely.
Fortunately, this classmate had plenty of strength to spare, lifting him with a single arm as if he weighed nothing at all.
He was a good guy, too. After getting Tang Yu down in a sort of half carried, half-cradled hold, he had even taken off his school uniform jacket and tied it around Tang Yu’s waist.
The oversized sleeves wrapped around his waist twice, and the bottom half perfectly covered the glaring rip at his thigh.
It happened to be recess, and the hallway of the academic building was packed with people.
Tang Yu couldn’t tell if it was just his imagination, but he felt like every single person they passed was staring at him.
Given the secret he was currently harboring, Tang Yu felt a bit guilty. Terrified that someone might catch a glimpse of the tear in his pants, he kept his arm pressed firmly against the jacket tied at his waist the entire way.
But gradually, Tang Yu realized something wasn’t quite right.
For instance, when two girls walked toward them, one of them caught sight of him, her eyes widening as she clamped a hand over her mouth. She instantly ducked behind her friend.
She looked startled, and her face was noticeably flushed.
Then she glanced at the person walking behind him, her gaze darting back and forth between their faces… before blushing even harder!
Tang Yu: ???
Tang Yu followed her gaze and turned around, only to realize that the guy who had lent him the jacket was still walking right behind him.
Tang Yu stopped and leaned against the back door of Class 1, naturally bending one long leg in a posture that looked effortlessly cool. “Almost forgot to say thanks, man. I’m going to borrow your jacket for the day. Which class are you in? I’ll return it to you tomorrow.”
To his surprise, the guy’s face remained entirely expressionless. “No need to return it.”
Huh? What did that mean? Was he disgusted because Tang Yu had worn it?
Before Tang Yu could figure it out, the guy walked right past him and straight into Class 1.
What’s more, he sat down right in the seat that had been empty for a week the seat belonging to the legendary protagonist of the novel, Bai Yuanian!
What was going on?
The girl sitting directly in front of that desk was Liu Shantong, the Class 1 president, sporting a pretty ponytail and blunt bangs.
She turned around to face him. “Yuan shen! How did the competition go? Did you sweep another gold medal?”
Hearing that nickname, Tang Yu froze. It felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head. His foot slipped, and he nearly wiped out right there on the floor.
Yuan shen? Don’t tell me the guy who just lent me his jacket is the main character?!
Dammit! The moment the realization hit, Tang Yu felt a sharp pang of chest pain. There was no way to lose face harder than this!
What kind of absolute disaster day was he having? He got stuck on a fence, ripped his pants, and then asked Bai Yuanian to pull him down!
Most importantly, Bai Yuanian had seen his…
Tang Yu, who had just sworn a vow never to have anything to do with Bai Yuanian: “…”
Tang Yu, who had just thought it didn’t matter if another guy saw his underwear: “…”
Screw that! If that guy happens to be into guys and is capable of getting him pregnant it matters! It matters a whole lot!
To make matters worse, Xie Tianyi chose that exact moment to waltz back. He reached out an chubby hand to steady Tang Yu’s arm. “Hey, even if Bai Yuanian is back, you don’t need to be this thrilled!”
Tang Yu’s voice was visibly trembling. “What… what ‘yuan’ did you say?”
Xie Tianyi: “Bai Yuanian!”
Tang Yu: “Bai what nian?”
Xie Tianyi: “Bai Yuanian!”
Tang Yu: “Bai Yuan what now?”
“Bai Yuan…” Midway through the repeating game, enlightenment suddenly struck Xie Tianyi. “Bro! Don’t tell me you’re actually serious about cutting ties with Bai Yuanian and pretending you’re total strangers?”
That was exactly what Tang Yu had claimed on his very first day after transmigrating here.
Xie Tianyi possessed a booming, powerful voice. The moment he raised his volume, the entire hallway instantly fell dead silent. A few heads from Class 2 next door even poked out to see what the drama was about.
Needless to say, the atmosphere inside Class 1, being the closest, turned exponentially weirder.
The sudden silence only made the blaring school bell sound even more earth-shattering as it rang for the start of class.
The chemistry teacher walked in, clutching a stack of test papers under her arm. “What are you all doing loitering in the hallway? Get back to your seats for class.”
As she walked into the classroom and spotted Bai Yuanian, she looked slightly surprised. “Weren’t you supposed to return to school tomorrow afternoon?”
The competition was out of the province, and a one-way trip took several hours.
Seeing that Bai Yuanian was already back, the timeline must have been incredibly tight. The chemistry teacher glanced at the wall clock and did the math in her head.
She figured Bai Yuanyan must have turned in his exam paper early during the afternoon session just to rush to the airport, bypassing the original plan of taking the high-speed rail back to Nancheng the next morning.
Bai Yuanian replied nonchalantly, “Had some urgent business, so I changed my ticket.”
What urgent business?
Rushing back to school just to attend class?
Though the chemistry teacher had her doubts, she wasn’t the type who absolutely had to pry into someone’s business.
Her husband happened to be the math teacher, so she was naturally invested in Bai Yuanian’s math competition. She asked casually, “How did the competition go?”
Bai Yuanian pulled out his metal rimmed glasses and slipped them on. “The questions weren’t hard. It’s a perfect score.”
His words instantly drew a round of applause from the entire room, and every eye in the class locked onto him.
Amidst the rhythmic clapping, Tang Yu, who was sitting just one seat and an aisle away from the center of attention, curled his lip dismissively.
The main character sure is arrogant! Total Bking energy.
Tang Yu still hadn’t recovered from the agonizing embarrassment of his recent social death; his chest felt tight with frustration.
Suddenly, the fading applause was cut short by a sneeze.
No, make that two sneezes.
The first one was barely audible over the clapping.
But once the applause died down entirely, Bai Yuanian let out another neat, quiet sneeze.
Even when sneezing, the golden boy managed to look aesthetically pleasing, his detached aura suddenly carrying a faint trace of vulnerability. He loosely curled his left hand into a fist, pressing it against his lips.
The movement caused his glasses to slide down slightly, and he extended a long finger to casually push them back up.
The gesture was… effortlessly attractive. Unfortunately, it did absolutely nothing for Tang Yu.
The chemistry teacher looked at the short sleeved shirt Bai Yuanian was wearing and asked, “Did you catch a cold? Where’s your uniform jacket?”
???
Tang Yu’s heart gave a sudden lurch. He had a very bad feeling about this.
Sure enough!
After scanning Bai Yuanian’s desk and failing to find the missing item, the chemistry teacher expanded her search radius and successfully spotted the two uniform jackets currently draped over Tang Yu.
Chemistry Teacher: “Tang Yu! Why are you hoarding Bai Yuanian’s clothes? Give it back to him right now.”
Tang Yu: “…I!”
Tang Yu felt even more suffocated! Was he really supposed to return Bai Yuanian’s jacket right now?
Then what about the tear in his pants?
Was he seriously expected to sit through class flaunting his care-bear-print underwear?
Did a school delinquent have no dignity left to protect?
Either way, this jacket was not moving!
With a swift motion, Tang Yu yanked open the zipper of his own uniform jacket, whipped it off, and threw it right at Bai Yuanian.
Just let him wear this one instead! Tang Yu thought he was a freaking genius.
After a brief two-minute interlude, the teacher began reviewing the test papers from a couple of days ago.
Since Bai Yuanian hadn’t taken that particular test, he used the lecture time to breeze through the paper himself.
Over at the podium, the teacher had just finished explaining the multiple-choice section. Meanwhile, Bai Yuanian was already turning the page.
The crisp sound of paper flipping caught Tang Yu’s attention, and he sneaked a sidelong glance toward him.
Bai Yuanian’s skin was incredibly pale, and his fingers were long and slender, looking as delicate as a girl’s hand.
It made it hard to believe that not too long ago, these exact hands had possessed enough raw strength to firmly hoist Tang Yu onto his shoulder without showing a single hint of frailty.
Who knew he had tons of strength but a weak immune system? Tsk tsk…
In just that short span of time, Bai Yuanian had already finished the paper and was checking his answers against the blackboard.
As he raised and lowered his head, his sharply defined jawline dipped into the collar of the uniform jacket, which he had zipped all the way to the top.
Tang Yu couldn’t tell if it was his imagination, but he swore he saw Bai Yuanian nuzzling slightly into the collar.
Did he catch a cold? Was he that freezing?
Moreover, the corners of Bai Yuanian’s eyes were slightly curved, as if he were in an exceptionally good mood.
Was he really that thrilled over winning a competition gold medal?
On the other side of the aisle.
Bai Yuanian’s deskmate was Wu Jianqi, the sports representative of Class 1, and chemistry happened to be his worst subject.
Staring at the slightly messy but incredibly detailed steps scrawled across Bai Yuanian’s scratch paper, he pointed at it and asked, “Yuan shen, mind if I take a quick photo of your steps?”
Without a word, Bai Yuanian silently slid the scratch paper over.
Wu Jianqi wasn’t actually close with Bai Yuanian. Despite being in the same class for nearly two years, the number of words they had exchanged could be counted on one hand.
Originally, the class genius had been sitting next to Tang Yu.
But last week, for some unknown reason, Bai Yuanian had suddenly requested a seat change.
The teacher had naturally accommodated him, which was how Bai Yuanian ended up as his deskmate.
However, the very next day, his new deskmate had left for the math competition, so they hadn’t really interacted much.
Hoping to ride his coattails and boost his chemistry grades, Wu Jianqi sneaked a glance at Bai Yuanian. Seeing the uniform zipper pulled all the way to the top, he tried to strike up a conversation. “Are you cold, Yuan shen?”
Bai Yuanian lightly gripped the cuff of the uniform sleeve, his fingertips brushing gently against the fabric as if the cheap, standard-issue school material were the finest, most precious silk. “I’m not cold.”
Not cold? You literally just sneezed twice!
“If you’re feeling unwell, just let me know and I’ll take you to the infirmary,” Wu Jianqi said as he finished snapping photos of the solutions. He then casually swiped over to check the weather forecast for Lincheng.
Lincheng, the northern city where Bai Yuanian’s math competition had been held.
He murmured as he scrolled, “Lincheng must have had a massive temperature drop these past few days. Look at you, getting sick after going there for just one week.”
“Don’t worry about it, we’re classmates, no need to worry about troubling me. Besides, I’m hoping to use this proximity to get you to tutor me in chemistry!”
“Huh?” As he kept scrolling, he suddenly began to question his own eyes, muttering in confusion, “Lincheng… this past week… how is the temperature two degrees higher than Nancheng?”
It had been nothing but a row of bright, sunny icons!
How does someone catch a cold in weather like that? Bai Yuanian isn’t usually this fragile, is he?
Wu Jianqi glanced at the uniform jacket Bai Yuanian was wearing which clearly didn’t belong to him and then cut his eyes toward the neighboring desk, where Tang Yu was resting his chin on his hand, looking utterly bored out of his mind as he spun his pen into a blur.
Suddenly, a wave of realization washed over Wu Jianqi!
Wow, couples in the middle of a lovers’ quarrel really know how to play.
