Chapter 80: The Secret Kiss
She looked so blissfully unaware that it made one want to bully her.
Yu Yingxia dazed out, momentarily believing she was in a dream otherwise, how could she sense Yan Huaixi’s scent here?
That was until she saw the flare of a crimson sleeve and a pale, slender hand.
They were still descending into the abyss. That pale hand pointed toward the sky specifically, toward the merged malevolent ghost currently pinned down by the Underworld Bailiffs. With a slight flick of her finger across the void, the struggling ghost instantly disintegrated into fragments.
Yu Yingxia didn’t see the carnage above. Her entire focus was drawn to that hand. Having spent so much time together, the memory of those hands was etched deep into her mind. Whether plucking the strings of a pipa or killing an enemy, those hands always moved with an eerie elegance. (Though, they were certainly better when not wrapped around her own neck.)
Deep down, Yu Yingxia had hoped Yan Huaixi would come for her, but she hadn’t been certain. After all, if Yan Zheng was truly gone, she might have outlived her usefulness. She hadn’t expected Yan Huaixi to dive into the literal Underworld to fish someone out.
As Yan Huaixi actually appeared before her, the breath Yu Yingxia had been holding finally escaped her. A part of her heart, one she hadn’t even realized existed, softened completely.
They drifted toward the bottom of the chasm. Just before they hit the floor, Yan Huaixi used a pulse of energy to cushion them. She landed gracefully, her arms tightening around the soul-blob.
“I finally found you,” Yan Huaixi sighed, leaning down to gently nuzzle her cheek against the round, squishy Yu Yingxia.
The familiar scent of peach blossoms finally drowned out the stench of blood. Even the wailing of the ghosts in the distance seemed to quiet down.
Yan Huaixi hadn’t had a single lead for days. If it weren’t for the flickering connection of the puppet thread, she might have lost her mind. She had turned this section of the Underworld into a prison; every ghost was her eyes and ears, yet she had found nothing until now.
Yu Yingxia, overwhelmed with joy, didn’t notice the strange possessiveness in Yan Huaixi’s voice. She tried to shift her position in the embrace, but Yan Huaixi was still nuzzling her. As Yu Yingxia turned, Yan Huaixi’s lips accidentally brushed against what served as the blob’s mouth.
Yu Yingxia’s entire soul suddenly felt like it was on fire!
She was utterly stunned. Then, the oblivious (or perhaps very aware) Yan Huaixi kissed her again.
Caught off guard, Yu Yingxia felt that warm touch once more. Once she processed what was happening, she immediately retracted into herself, trying to act like an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
It’s an accident! Just an accident! She desperately tried to convince herself.
Seeing the “ball” burrowing into her chest, Yan Huaixi let out a soft laugh. She could tell from the soul-blob’s reaction that the girl was shy. The tenderness in her eyes deepened, but it was laced with a growing, dark obsession—matching the way her arms refused to let go.
There won’t be a next time. Anything that tries to touch my rabbit will be sent to the deepest pits of Avici.
A flash of murderous intent flickered in Yan Huaixi’s eyes, but she suppressed it instantly. she didn’t want to expose her true nature and terrify the soul in her arms.
Yu Yingxia felt the silence become awkward. She could only hear Yan Huaixi’s shallow breathing. She realized her “hiding spot” in Yan Huaixi’s arms was… a bit too intimate.
She poked her head out of her “hiding place” to break the tension. She wanted to say thank you, but the words died in her throat.
For the first time, she saw Yan Huaixi clearly.
The red of her dress wasn’t the clean, vibrant crimson it usually was; it was stained with massive patches of a much darker, drying red. The thick scent of blood Yu Yingxia had smelled earlier wasn’t from the battlefield—it was from her.
She looked up into Yan Huaixi’s eyes and saw a deep, blood-like hue. In this moment, Yan Huaixi looked more like a death god than the bailiffs above. Just looking at her sent a chill up one’s spine.
But that terrifying aura was for the rest of the world. For Yu Yingxia, there was only a remnant of warmth. Yu Yingxia felt her heart ache. How did the “cat” I finally managed to tame end up looking like this again?
Before she could ask, Yan Huaixi spoke first. “How did you become like this? Is your body still there? Can you change back?”
She kneaded the soft, bouncy blob as if she couldn’t bear to stop, though it was unclear if she actually wanted Yu Yingxia to return to human form.
“My body is likely gone. I woke up as a soul. I used Senior Yan Qingxu’s technique to hide my aura from the ghosts,” Yu Yingxia explained. Then, she shifted her form.
In an instant, the blob transformed into a human shape. She expected to be set down, but Yan Huaixi didn’t let go. Instead, she shifted her into a bridal carry.
Yu Yingxia instinctively hooked her arms around Yan Huaixi’s neck. Once she realized the position, she looked away, her face heating up. A bridal carry was far too intimate. If she were “straight,” it might be fine, but her orientation had long since twisted into a spiral. In this situation, she couldn’t help but overthink.
“I can walk on my own, Sister… your injuries…”
“They are nothing. Just minor scratches,” Yan Huaixi said dismissively, ignoring the fact that half her clothes were soaked in blood. She made no move to put Yu Yingxia down.
“And you? Have you been hiding here the whole time? Did you run into any other dangers?” Her voice was incredibly gentle. Yu Yingxia had a gut feeling—Yan Huaixi was more tender right now than she had ever been, but she also felt like a string pulled dangerously tight.
“No other dangers. I found a hidden spot. The ghosts didn’t find me until their fight spilled over into my hiding place.” Yu Yingxia felt a bit of relief. If it hadn’t been for that accident forcing her out, Yan Huaixi might not have found her so soon.
“I see… no wonder,” Yan Huaixi murmured.
The two Underworld Bailiffs descended, holding soul fragments from the destroyed ghosts. Yu Yingxia flinched at the sight of them. She had been terrified of being captured by them while she was hiding.
Yan Huaixi sensed her fear and immediately stepped back, gesturing for the bailiffs to stay away. They obeyed instantly, heads bowed.
“Useless things. The person was right under your noses, and you couldn’t find her for days!” Yan Huaixi’s voice turned sharp and icy as she addressed them. She gave her softness to Yu Yingxia, but her suppressed rage was now bleeding out toward everyone else.
“They… are your ghosts?” Yu Yingxia realized the misunderstanding. She sighed and patted her forehead. “I thought they were soul-reapers coming for me, so I hid. I didn’t realize we kept missing each other.”
Seeing the terrifying bailiffs shrinking back in fear of Yan Huaixi, Yu Yingxia felt a bit bad for them and spoke up. “Don’t blame them. Senior Yan Qingxu’s techniques are just too good at hiding one’s presence.”
Yan Huaixi narrowed her eyes at the bailiffs. Their frightening appearance had scared her girl. She should have warned Yu Yingxia about her methods. Not wanting to appear too brutal in front of her “rabbit,” she waved them away.
They vanished instantly. Now alone, Yan Huaixi sat on a nearby rock, keeping Yu Yingxia firmly in her lap.
The blush on Yu Yingxia’s face was unmistakable. Yan Huaixi, seemingly pushing her luck, offered a flawless excuse: “Spatial turbulence doesn’t just damage the body; it harms the soul. Since your body is destroyed, I need to check your soul for hidden injuries.”
In this position, they were practically pressed against each other. If it weren’t for the fact that Yan Huaixi had threatened her in the past, Yu Yingxia would have suspected she was about to lean in for a real kiss.
Thank god I don’t have a physical body right now, or my face would be glowing red, Yu Yingxia thought.
Little did she know, her “soul’s” shy reactions were perfectly visible to Yan Huaixi.
Yan Huaixi tightened her embrace, her eyes full of both satisfaction and a hint of danger. She knew she couldn’t push too far yet, but a simple “soul mingling” was perfectly fine.
