Chapter 61: Stealing a Kiss
She wanted to steal a kiss from Yu Yingxia in the darkness.
The shouting from not far away echoed once more, but the snow mountain side remained silent. Growing impatient, the enemy decided to give them a “show of strength” to intimidate them.
The drumming ceased, replaced by the desolate sound of a flute.
The most vulnerable person present was the prisoner whose cultivation had been crippled. The moment he heard the flute, his face twisted in agony; had Teng Yuelan not immediately dislocated his jaw, he might have bitten off his own tongue.
“Tsk, truly unpleasant to the ear.” Yan Huaixi originally intended to crush the man’s soul along with the flute melody which, to her, was amateurish at best. However, after being praised by Yu Yingxia, she suddenly felt that such a simple death would be far too merciful.
Yu Yingxia only heard a very short segment of the flute music before Yan Huaixi shielded her from the sound. Since childhood, Yu Yingxia had been the kind of student who made music teachers sigh in despair; she wasn’t skilled at music appreciation. At this high level of cultivation, the enemy’s skill couldn’t possibly be low, and she couldn’t actually hear a difference but that didn’t stop her from showering Yan Huaixi with praise.
Yan Huaixi drew a flute of her own from her storage bag. As the first note drifted out, all other sounds in the world seemed to vanish.
The enemy Sect Leader had looked confident, thinking his cultivation could crush the guards. He believed that under his melody, those people would be defenseless, so he had let down his guard.
Thus, when the second flute melody rose, the sudden disruption shattered his rhythm. The two melodies intertwined, creating a localized explosion that blew his purple flute into fragments.
The enemy Sect Leader clutched his mouth as blood dripped through his fingers some from the backlash of the spiritual energy, and some from the shards cutting his lips.
“How is this possible…”
As a master of sound cultivation himself, the Sect Leader instantly realized how terrifyingly strong his opponent was. Even if he had been caught off guard, his own cultivation base was significant; to have his melody shattered so directly meant the opponent’s strength was far beyond his own!
When did Dream Ridge gain such an expert?
The Earth Fiend Sect Leader’s greatest fear was a “Void-Refining and Dao-Combining” cultivator appearing. He had probed until now before daring to strike, only for such a powerful cultivator to manifest the moment he moved.
The flute music circling the snow mountains changed again. Realizing the danger, the Earth Fiend Sect Leader immediately summoned his life-bound artifact to respond. His weapon was an ancient zither. He managed to prop up a barrier of sound to intercept Yan Huaixi’s moves before shouting to those behind him: “Withdraw! Move everyone in the sect out of here! I will stay to stall them!”
He gave the order, but not a single person behind him reacted.
His heart sank halfway. He realized he had been outmaneuvered from the start. As the saying goes, “while there is life, there is hope.” He couldn’t save the people who had followed him here; it was better to save himself.
With that thought, he immediately adjusted his tune, turning the people behind him into “musical notes” to block and confuse Yan Huaixi’s offensive while he made a hasty retreat.
He fled back with all his might, not even daring to look back for fear that slowing down by a single step would allow Yan Huaixi to catch him.
It wasn’t until the silhouette of the Earth Fiend Sect nestled in the mountains came into view that he let out a long sigh of relief. There was no terrifying aura behind him; it seemed the opponent hadn’t pursued him.
He stood at the sect entrance, his legs trembling. After catching his breath, his mind raced. If the opponent was satisfied after killing so many of his men, that would be ideal. But if they insisted on seeking retribution, finding this place was only a matter of time.
Furthermore, if there was a master of the Sound Path over there, it wouldn’t be hard to make the captives reveal the truth. They might arrive soon.
No, this place is likely unsafe. It’s better to relocate as soon as possible!
The Earth Fiend Sect Leader immediately went to the practice grounds to strike the emergency assembly bell. But as the mallet hit the great bell, the sound that should have rung out was nowhere to be found.
His hand holding the mallet faltered, and he tremblingly let go of the object.
He understood now. He had never truly stepped out of the enemy’s flute music.
A red silhouette appeared nearby. Only then did Yan Huaixi lower her flute. She surveyed the Earth Fiend Sect and commented, “I thought your place would be as gloomy as its name. It turns out to be quite decent. Thank you for leading the way.”
“Yingxia, do you like the layout here?”
Yu Yingxia, following behind her, glanced at the classical pavilions and towers. At this moment, she hadn’t yet realized the true meaning behind Yan Huaixi’s words.
“It’s quite beautiful. I thought it would look more like the Long Life Sect.” Originally, Yu Yingxia assumed demonic cultivators with a name like “Earth Fiend” would build something sinister, but these carved beams and painted rafters among the mountains felt almost like a celestial realm.
“Then once I’ve cleared out this filth, I’ll give this place to you.” Yan Huaixi spoke with a bright smile, though her words made the man across from them break into a cold sweat.
The Earth Fiend Sect was relatively new and hadn’t had time to cultivate any foul things beneath the earth. It was a perfect gift once cleaned up.
“Senior! What happened before was this junior’s fault! I was blind. You may demand anything, and I will surely satisfy it! Those captured by you can be considered my apology they were the only ones disturbing Dream Ridge. Please, Senior, stay your hand and do not sever our sect’s legacy!” The Sect Leader bowed deeply, humbling himself to the extreme.
“You certainly know how to yield when necessary.” As soon as Yan Huaixi moved her gaze away from Yu Yingxia, it turned icy. Her tone carried a smile, yet it was bone-chilling.
“Your mouth says ‘sorry’ over and over, but your actions say something else.” Yan Huaixi stepped forward, shielding Yu Yingxia. Her finger tapped the air, and the space rippled like water.
The sound of the ground shattering suddenly erupted beneath them. Hundreds of black flood-dragons (Jiao), bound by chains, burst forth from the earth.
“A bunch of brainless beasts, ruining such a nice house!” Yan Huaixi frowned. She had just said she would give it to Yu Yingxia, and now these things were breaking it!
“Roar!” The 108 black dragons roared toward the sky, the vibration collapsing even more buildings.
“Heh, your killing intent hasn’t disappeared for a single second. Rather than begging for mercy, I might as well risk everything. At worst, it’s just death!” The Earth Fiend Sect Leader suddenly began to vomit blood. When his blood hit the ground, it vanished, seemingly swallowed by the earth.
Simultaneously, the eyes of the black dragons glowed a sinister scarlet. Dark clouds pressed down, and the sky turned pitch black. Their eyes were like blood moons hanging high in the sky as the dragons grew increasingly frenzied.
“Black flood-dragons…” Yan Huaixi did not show the grim expression the enemy hoped for. She glanced at the dragons surrounding them, the mockery in her eyes giving the opponent a bad premonition. “Legend has it that the Heaven-Slaying Demon Venerable kept 108 loaches to guard his tomb after his death. Later, those who emerged from the trials said the loaches were gone. So, you were the one who took them out.”
“You don’t think these loaches can stop me, do you? These little toys aren’t much stronger than you are.” Yan Huaixi felt that someone who could survive those trials shouldn’t be so naive.
The Sect Leader said nothing more, completing his formation as she spoke.
The black dragons let out shrill wails. Their bodies exploded simultaneously, their collective power and souls merging into a massive black dragon that blotted out the sun!
Even 108 dragons attacking at once couldn’t threaten Yan Huaixi, but their combined self-destruction was different. This force was enough to wound even a mid-stage “Void-Refining and Dao-Combining” cultivator!
The Earth Fiend Sect Leader had completely disregarded the lives of his fellow sect members. The force of the black dragon swept through a large number of innocent bystanders. Yan Huaixi immediately teleported her subordinates to a distance.
The Sect Leader’s figure became illusory, like a candle flickering in a storm, yet countless “threads” connected him to the black dragon.
“This is the ultimate move left by the Demon Venerable! Even if you are a Void-Refining and Dao-Combining cultivator, so what? You cannot hide; this move is enough to severely damage your soul!” And at that moment, he would have his chance to escape!
That Demon Venerable had been a cultivator of both the Blade and the Soul Path. This move was exceptionally venomous, specifically targeting a cultivator’s spirit. Unless the opponent was an even more powerful Soul Cultivator than the Demon Venerable, they could not break this move!
The only person in this world likely to survive this hit was the Sect Master of the Long Life Sect the only Void-Refining Soul Cultivator currently known in the cultivation world. As long as he wasn’t facing her, the Earth Fiend Sect Leader was confident.
He had heard that she had been defeated by the Tianqiu Sect and her status was unknown; she certainly couldn’t appear here, so there was nothing to worry about.
Yan Huaixi flicked her sleeve, and several streaks of dark red light pierced through the Sect Leader’s body like blades. Unfortunately, his illusory form was like a reflection on water—it rippled but suffered no physical damage.
It seemed killing the caster directly wouldn’t work.
The black dragon locked onto Yan Huaixi. The power it unleashed sucked everything around it into its pitch-black body; even light vanished.
This darkness seemed to obstruct vision entirely. Yu Yingxia could suddenly see nothing, and she instinctively gripped Yan Huaixi’s hand.
“Sister, can you deal with this thing?” Hearing the Sect Leader’s tone, Yu Yingxia sensed this might be extremely troublesome.
“Don’t be afraid. Just leave it to me.” Yan Huaixi’s calm voice came through the darkness. At the same time, Yu Yingxia felt her hand being squeezed back.
“This is a perfect chance. I’ll use this opportunity to teach you a move. Feel it carefully and learn.” Yan Huaixi’s aura suddenly drew closer in the dark. Yu Yingxia could see nothing, only feeling that familiar, faint fragrance pressing near.
Just how close was she? Only Yan Huaixi, who could see through the darkness, knew.
She wasn’t a person with a particularly high moral compass. Realizing Yu Yingxia couldn’t see anything, she leaned in close. Had the timing been better, Yan Huaixi definitely would have stolen a kiss.
Alas, she was worried Yu Yingxia wouldn’t be able to accept it if she found out.
Yan Huaixi sighed, reluctantly abandoning the idea of a secret kiss.
Yu Yingxia blinked her eyes aimlessly in the night. In the next second, a faint red light rose slowly. She squinted slightly, stimulated by the sudden glow.
Yan Huaixi began to chant an incantation, simultaneously transmitting its content to Yu Yingxia.
From her right hand, a sea of blood-red mist surged forth, contending against the pitch-black night. The sun had long been hidden by clouds and darkness, but at this moment, a “blood moon” rose in the sky!
The scarlet moon reflected in the sea of mist, becoming the brightest light. Yan Huaixi reached out her right hand and scooped that moon from the mist; within that eerie lunar shadow lay an immensely powerful soul force.
The black dragon roared, trying to shatter the mist. However, as it charged in, the mist naturally enveloped it. This was “subduing the hard with the soft.” The unstoppable black dragon slowed down more and more within the mist. By the time it reached Yan Huaixi, it didn’t have the strength to advance another inch.
The phantom of the blood moon floated in the air. Yan Huaixi tapped the moon again, and under her guidance, it merged into the black dragon’s forehead.
The souls of the 108 wailing black dragons instantly went silent. The storm that had been sweeping across the world seemed to cease in an instant.
The giant dragon froze. Within moments, the souls composing the dragon began to decompose. Finally, the entire black dragon dissolved into points of black spiritual light and vanished into the air. The caster also collapsed to the ground, lifeless. As the black dragon fell, the stolen light returned to the world.
The land grew bright once more. Yan Huaixi withdrew her hand. The wind began to flow again, gently blowing her red hemline, making her the most brilliant sight in Yu Yingxia’s eyes.
Yu Yingxia silently looked away. She had to admit that Yan Huaixi possessed a charm that manifested in every gesture, one that was far too attractive, causing her heart to race uncontrollably.
“A pity. This place is nearly ruined. I wanted to give it to you directly, but perhaps I should have someone repair it.” Standing at the best vantage point of the Earth Fiend Sect, Yan Huaixi looked at the post-war devastation with a dissatisfied tone.
“Don’t go to such trouble. I live with you, Sister; having this place would be useless anyway.” Yu Yingxia wanted Yan Huaixi to stop worrying about her affairs.
However, to Yan Huaixi’s ears, these words held a different meaning. She raised an eyebrow slightly. Did her rabbit mean she would always live with her? She liked the sound of that.
