Chapter 55: Misunderstanding
Yang Xunzhou’s words are far too thin.
Yu Yingxia repeated her mantra: Think of it as a doctor’s visit, think of it as a doctor’s visit. Chanting this in her head, she managed to comfort herself enough to lie flat on the bed.
A moment later, she felt the mattress dip beside her as Yan Huaixi sat down.
“The injuries on your back are quite severe. I have a fast-acting medicine; you’ll be healed soon after applying it. It might sting a bit, so try to bear with it,” Yan Huaixi said, her voice unusually tender.
Yu Yingxia nodded. If Yan Huaixi said it would “sting a bit,” it would likely be agonizing. The embarrassment she had felt earlier was quickly replaced by nervous tension at the prospect of the pain.
Yan Huaixi averted her gaze from places she shouldn’t look and pulled a small vial from her storage bag.
This was the medicine she had ordered Jiang Li to prepare in advance when she summoned her. Since it was for Yu Yingxia, Jiang Li hadn’t bothered to mask the medicinal scent. As soon as the vial was opened, a light herbal fragrance wafted out. It wasn’t unpleasant, but Yu Yingxia remembered Yan Huaixi’s hatred for the smell of medicine.
“Sister, don’t you hate the smell of medicine? Maybe we should let Doctor Jiang do it?”
Yan Huaixi had indeed frowned slightly at the scent, but hearing Yu Yingxia’s suggestion made her brow furrow deeper. “It’s fine, I don’t hate it that much. Besides, Jiang Li is busy and can’t come right now.”
Even if Jiang Li were free, Yan Huaixi would have found something to keep her occupied. If all else failed, that spirit mine she just purchased was desperately short of workers.
Outside, the idle Jiang Li suddenly sneezed. She felt an inexplicable chill down her spine. The doctor rubbed her arms and nudged a disgruntled companion with her elbow. “Alright, you know the Master’s personality. She has her plans; don’t ruin things for her.”
Yu Yingxia’s appearance had shocked everyone on the ship. As the first person to have contact with the “new” Yan Huaixi, Jiang Li had been besieged by colleagues digging for information. Because Yan Huaixi had forbidden her from speaking, Jiang Li had spent the trip sighing and making up excuses.
“I see,” Yu Yingxia murmured, thinking that Doctor Jiang had looked quite bored when they boarded. She must be very busy if she’s already been called away. Yan Huaixi’s organization is quite demanding.
“Then I’ll trouble you, Sister.”
The medicine was a milky-white paste. Yan Huaixi scooped some out and began spreading it over the purple bruises on Yu Yingxia’s back. The impacts in the corpse nest had been brutal; large patches of her back were discolored. Yu Yingxia had only been able to keep running then because she had been numb with pain.
The paste was cold, as were Yan Huaixi’s fingertips. At first, it was just ticklish, but after a few moments, the treated areas began to generate heat. The heat intensified until it felt as if the wounds beneath her skin were being scorched by fire.
The dormant pain flared up again, now mixed with a stinging, burning sensation. Yu Yingxia gritted her teeth to keep from crying out, but her body trembled uncontrollably. Yan Huaixi’s fingers traced the bruises, her eyes filled with heartache.
“It will pass in a moment.” Once the medicine was applied, Yan Huaixi used her fingertips to gently massage the area, encouraging the skin to absorb the potency.
As the initial agony subsided, a soothing, warm energy began to seep into her muscles. Just then, the person sitting beside her leaned down and gently blew on the injured area.
The cool breath hitting the burning skin created a sensation so intense part tingle, part sting, part itch that Yu Yingxia couldn’t help herself. A soft, somewhat ambiguous moan escaped her lips.
Realizing what she had sounded like, she instantly covered her mouth and buried her face in the pillow, refusing to look up. She truly hadn’t meant it; if Yan Huaixi had warned her, she wouldn’t have been caught so off-guard.
Because Yu Yingxia was busy wishing she could dig a hole and crawl into it, she didn’t notice Yan Huaixi’s fingers freeze against her skin.
The book Yang Xunzhou had written was currently sitting in Yan’s storage bag. While she loathed the ending, she had to admit some of the descriptions were… evocative. But reading words on a page paled in comparison to hearing Yu Yingxia gasp in her ear.
Yan Huaixi could feel her own face heating up. Fortunately, Yu Yingxia was face-down and couldn’t see the “Great Demon” losing her composure.
The bruises faded at a visible rate. Yan Huaixi forced her trembling fingers to continue. The skin beneath her touch was incredibly soft; every time she moved to a new spot, Yu Yingxia would shiver. Particularly around the waist—Yu Yingxia’s waist was so slender it invited one to linger. It was only when applying medicine here that the patient would let out those whimpering, melodic sounds.
The healing process had turned into a grueling test of Yan Huaixi’s self-control. By the time she finished, she realized she had forgotten to breathe.
She let out a quiet sigh of relief, only to have Yu Yingxia turn her head to look at her. The girl’s eyes were misty with tears, making it look as though she had just been bullied. Yan Huaixi pinched her own palm to clear her head.
“Is… is it finished?” Yu Yingxia’s voice was weak; that experience had been truly draining.
“It’s finished,” Yan Huaixi replied curtly, masking her agitation. She quickly pulled the nearby clothes over Yu Yingxia’s shoulders. “Don’t catch a cold.”
The temperature inside the spirit ship was perfectly regulated, but Yan was terrified that if this “rabbit” remained so vulnerable and exposed, she might lose her resolve. Slow and steady, she reminded herself. Don’t scare her away.
Yu Yingxia dressed with a blush. The pain was indeed gone; it truly was a miraculous medicine. However, with the task done, both were lost in their own thoughts, and an awkward silence filled the room.
Yu Yingxia stared at the floor. If she didn’t say something soon, she was going to die of embarrassment. “Ahem… Sister, Sister Yang will be worried when she finds out we’re missing. We should find a way to let her know we’re safe.”
“I left her a note. It’s fine. Her hometown is in the Southern Territory anyway. If she’s brave enough to come back, finding you will be easy.” If she dares.
Yan Huaixi felt her decision to build her new base in the Southern Territory was a stroke of genius. Yang Xunzhou had offended so many people here that she likely wouldn’t dare return anytime soon. She smirked; in the South, no one would steal her time with her rabbit.
“Sister thinks of everything. Luckily, I have the manuscripts she gave me. Once I finish the illustrations, I’ll see if I can send them to her secretly.” Yu Yingxia felt she owed Yang Xunzhou and didn’t want to neglect her work.
“Assuming… she still wants them,” Yu Yingxia added with a bitter smile. Their departure confirmed their identities: the world’s greatest demon and her “wicked” henchwoman. Righteous people would want nothing to do with them. Yang Xunzhou, with her unique abilities, likely knew exactly who they were by now.
Yan Huaixi frowned and patted her hand. “Yang Xunzhou isn’t an old-fashioned prude. Look at the business she runs—in the eyes of those ‘righteous’ elders, she’s no different from a demonic cultivator. She’s known you a long time; she won’t believe the rumors.”
Yan Huaixi felt a surge of disgust at herself for defending the woman, but she couldn’t stand to see Yu Yingxia sad. If Yang Xunzhou did try to cut ties, Yan had plenty of ways to “encourage” her to keep Yu Yingxia happy—starting with the collection of specialized manuscripts she had confiscated, each representing someone Yang had offended.
In reality, Yang Xunzhou wasn’t worried about “righteousness.” She was currently staring into the abyss in her bookstore. When she realized she had handed her “spicy” fan-fiction directly to the protagonists—and had been interviewed by Yan Huaixi about the ending—her world turned black.
“Xiao Xuan, pack your things! We’re running!” Yang shouted. Yan Huaixi was much scarier than the Nie family; the Nie’s would just kill her, but the Demon Head could make her soul suffer for eternity!
“Aunt Yang, if she wanted to kill you, she would have done it already,” the young wolf-girl, Nie Xuan, said calmly. “I didn’t feel any killing intent from her.”
“R-really?” Yang calmed down. She realized Yan had even asked her to change the ending, meaning she liked the rest of it. Then the realization hit her: “They aren’t sisters! Yan Huaixi is definitely after Yingxia!”
The spirit ship crossed into the Southern Territory. The Tianqiu Sect’s blockades were far too late. Once in the South, finding Yan Huaixi was nearly impossible.
Her base was in Xianlu Valley, a place surrounded by mountains and mist, protected by layers of illusions. Even a Sovereign would get lost there.
As the ship landed, the valley’s high-ranking members gathered to welcome their master. When Yu Yingxia stepped out with Yan Huaixi, she was met with a barrage of hostile glares. The glares only vanished when Yan appeared behind her.
My bad reputation travels fast, Yu Yingxia thought helplessly.
A woman named Teng Yuelan stepped forward, her expression emotional. But when she saw Yu Yingxia holding Yan Huaixi’s hand, her face froze. The Master is letting someone touch her?!
Everyone knew Yan Huaixi was a germaphobe who hated physical contact. The rumors they had heard that Yu Yingxia had seduced the Master in her room for days and nights, or that she had kept the Master from resting while she was injured—had been dismissed as nonsense by Teng Yuelan. Until now.
The way Yan Huaixi protectively guided Yu Yingxia off the ship, making sure she didn’t trip, was nothing short of doting.
“Yuelan, is the room next to mine ready?” Yan Huaixi asked.
Teng Yuelan snapped out of her shock. “Yes, Master. It has been arranged according to your instructions.”
“Good. You all may leave. If you have reports, come later.” Yan led Yu Yingxia away to show her their new home.
Xianlu Valley was a “Half-Immortal Artifact” Yan had won through a dangerous trial years ago. As its owner, she could monitor and control everything within it.
Behind them, the subordinates whispered. “The Master is really taken with her? She’s a traitor, how can she be trusted—”
Jiang Li jumped in to cover the speaker’s mouth. “Quiet! The Master has her reasons. Just do your jobs!”
“Jiang Li!” Teng Yuelan’s voice boomed. Jiang Li, terrified of Teng, instantly withered. “I’ll deal with you later. Don’t wander off.”
The valley was peaceful, a perfect place for seclusion. Yu Yingxia felt herself relaxing until a thought struck her.
“Sister,” she said, squeezing Yan’s hand. “I don’t know if Yan Zheng can still track my location. If this place is exposed…”
“Don’t be afraid,” Yan Huaixi replied. “If he dares come here, the valley’s artifact will show him the meaning of despair. I could use you as bait to trap him, but I won’t put you in danger. For now, just rest. If a secret realm opens nearby, I’ll take you for some fun.”
Yu Yingxia smiled. “You should focus on healing first. Doctor Jiang says you aren’t fully recovered. Besides, look at how they look at me like I’m a ‘femme fatale.’ If I take you out now, I’ll never live that title down.”
