Chapter 46: Losing Control
She almost kissed Yu Yingxia.
Silence descended upon the bookstore for a long time. Yan Huaixi took a sip of tea, breaking the dead quiet: “If what you say is true that the two of them love each other then why pursue and kill you?”
“I pondered that for a long time before I figured it out,” Yang Xunzhou sighed. “The Nie family treated their third daughter, the one they adopted, as one of their own and kept her identity a secret from the outside world. Even the younger generation of the Nie family didn’t know. If I hadn’t suddenly wanted to write a story about the two of them, I never would have investigated and discovered they weren’t blood-related.”
When Yang Xunzhou first prepared to put pen to paper, she felt a bit perverted herself—imagining things about sisters. But then she reconsidered; this was the guidance of the Book of Fate. If there was a problem, it was destiny’s fault, not hers! It was only after deeper investigation that she found the hidden secret of the Nie family.
“So back then, Little Nie definitely didn’t know the secret. Bound by the constraints of being ‘sisters,’ she didn’t dare show her feelings for her third sister. She might not have cared about herself, but my story involved the Third Miss. It’s a mercy Little Nie didn’t skin me alive.”
This was what Yang Xunzhou realized later. Although the cultivation world wasn’t as bound by mortal taboos, this involved direct siblings in the eyes of the public. How could Little Nie let Third Miss bear such infamy?
“I knew this couldn’t be spread, so I only wrote one copy and hid it in my room to enjoy privately. So how on earth did that book end up in Little Nie’s hands?!” Yang Xunzhou still hadn’t figured that part out.
The only person who could enter her room at will was Nie Xuan. That child’s parents died early it seemed to involve the Sirius Demons on her father’s side. Thus, the previous generation’s head of the Nie family brought the granddaughter back to raise, naming her Nie Xuan and completely severing her ties with the wolf demons.
Back then, Yang Xunzhou often visited the Nie house and discovered the tiny infant. She hadn’t inherited the headship of the Yang family yet and was bored out of her mind, so she spent her days playing with the child. Over time, the child essentially grew up by her side.
Yang Xunzhou’s study held many “unspeakable” secrets. Except for Nie Xuan, anyone else wanting to enter had to inform her beforehand.
Thus, when the book appeared in Little Nie’s hands, Nie Xuan became the first suspect. However, Yang Xunzhou didn’t believe the child would steal from her, and she was too busy running for her life to investigate. The matter went unresolved, but apparently, Nie Xuan was still brooding over it.
Yan Huaixi chuckled. “So now, do those two Nie sisters know they aren’t blood-related?”
Yang Xunzhou shook her head. “That, I don’t know.”
“I suspect they don’t. Otherwise, Head Nie wouldn’t be wasting her time chasing you; she’d be pouring all her heart and soul into her ‘dear sister.'”
Yan Huaixi, always possessing a wicked sense of humor and a love for chaos, set down her teacup and prodded Yang Xunzhou: “Why don’t you head back to the Southern Realm? Before Head Nie can react, throw the truth and the ‘guidance of the Book of Fate’ right at her. If you do that, she might not only stop chasing you, but she might even thank you.”
Yang Xunzhou was lured in by her confident tone. “Would that really work?”
“If they truly love each other, you can certainly try. If she knows the truth, I guarantee Head Nie won’t have the mind to worry about you for a long while.” Yan Huaixi smiled like a cunning fox.
Yang Xunzhou felt there was some other deep meaning in Miss Yu’s smile, but she also felt the suggestion made perfect sense! Should she try it?
While Yang Xunzhou was mulling over the feasibility, no one noticed Yu Yingxia’s eyes go blank as she stared into space. She had been dazed for a long time.
When Yang Xunzhou mentioned that her stories followed the guidance of the Book of Fate, Yu Yingxia remembered something Yang had proposed recently.
Sister Yang said she wanted to write a story about Yan Huaixi and me… was that also an inspiration from fate?
Later, Sister Yang seemed to have stopped mentioning it. Was it because her inspiration was cut off?
Yu Yingxia’s thoughts were a mess. She didn’t notice Yan Huaixi calling her name.
It wasn’t until her hand was gently patted that she snapped back like a startled bird and reflexively pulled her hand away.
Her reaction was so sharp that Yan Huaixi dropped her playful mood, asking with concern, “What were you thinking about? Why that expression?”
Yu Yingxia bit her lip. The spot where Yan Huaixi touched her felt tingly she knew it was psychological.
“I… I was just thinking, so many years have passed. Maybe Head Nie isn’t pursuing it anymore? It’s not a blood feud; surely she wouldn’t remember it until now? Maybe Sister Yang is overthinking it,” Yu Yingxia said casually to hide her inner turmoil.
“Unlikely. Little Nie is the most vengeful person. When we were kids, I stole one of her fruits, and she paid me back tenfold after she grew up.” Yang Xunzhou’s brows drooped; she didn’t dare hope for luck.
“Just in case I really go missing one day, you take over this bookstore.” This was her life’s work; she wouldn’t trust it to anyone else.
“Sister Yang, don’t be so pessimistic. Your two families are old allies. No matter how bad Head Nie’s temper is, she won’t truly hurt you.” As a family head, Nie wasn’t a child anymore; she wouldn’t cause a massive scene over this, Yu Yingxia comforted.
“She might not hurt me, but she’ll lead my old enemies right to me.” Yang Xunzhou felt the future was dark at the thought of being surrounded.
Just then, a small slit was pulled open in the curtain leading to the back room. Everyone except Yu Yingxia noticed the movement.
“Aunt Yang, don’t worry. If my Little Aunt really comes, I’ll block her and let you run first.” The obedient “wolf cub” in the back room offered a small gesture of loyalty.
Though the words were sweet, Yang Xunzhou thought of what Nie Xuan had done recently and scolded, “You think you can block your Little Aunt? Go cultivate for another few decades, then maybe you’ll have a chance.”
“I have a way to stop her!” Seeing that Yang Xunzhou didn’t believe her, Nie Xuan retreated back into the room. She took out a family communication device. She was cautious; she didn’t contact her Little Aunt directly, but reached out to someone else to relay the news indirectly.
The older Miss Yu was right. If Little Aunt knows Third Aunt isn’t a blood daughter of the Nie family, she won’t have time to care about Aunt Yang.
Outside, Yang Xunzhou seemed to remember something. She mysteriously pulled out a book and handed it to Yu Yingxia.
“This is a new story. I finished it in a hurry while I was out the past few days. If my luck is bad, this might be my final work. A-Sheng, I’m entrusting the illustrations for this book to you as well.” Yang Xunzhou looked like she was giving her last will and testament, leaving Yu Yingxia no choice but to accept.
“Alright, I’ll look at it when I get back.” Yu Yingxia glanced at the title. Yang Xunzhou always gave her “improper” books a very proper cover title; the real title was inside.
She flipped the cover, and the two lines that met her eyes were:
Desire Hidden Within Interrogation (Alias: The Years the Demonic Sect Master and her Protector Loved and Killed Each Other)
Yu Yingxia slammed the book shut with a thwack. Her movement was so fast that Yan Huaixi didn’t even see the words.
Yu Yingxia’s expression became incredibly vivid. Her lips twitched slightly; she couldn’t believe what she had just seen.
Her reaction completely piqued Yan Huaixi’s curiosity. She leaned in, wrapping her arm around Yu Yingxia’s waist. “What book is it?”
She reached for the cover, but Yu Yingxia dodged, clutching the book tight.
Yan Huaixi narrowed her dangerous eyes. The more Yu Yingxia hid it, the more she wanted to see!
“Ahem… Miss Yu, that book isn’t fully edited yet. If you’re interested, why not look at these others? I have plenty of good books here.” Yang Xunzhou saw Yu Yingxia’s embarrassment and hurriedly changed the subject.
Then again… was the relationship between these “sisters” a bit too close? Even Little Nie and the Third Miss weren’t this clingy back then. The way Yu Yingxia looked at the other was like honey. Yang Xunzhou’s fingers twitched; she suddenly felt a strange urge to write.
“…” Wait! That feeling was definitely a “guidance.”
Yang Xunzhou’s eyes widened. No way? These two were sisters how could she suddenly feel the guidance? But the feeling persisted. Her shock only grew. Could it be that there truly are unspeakable feelings between these two?!
She had learned her lesson and kept her mouth shut, but her expression remained extremely complex.
She never expected that even though she resisted the urge to speak, she had personally handed the “work” to the subjects themselves. Yu Yingxia’s face was so solemn that Yang Xunzhou thought she had written something offensive.
After a long silence, Yu Yingxia asked, “Sister Yang, you said these stories are guided by the Book of Fate. Then these books… are they the future of those people?”
So that’s what she’s worried about. Yang Xunzhou tried to calm her expression and patted her shoulder. “It’s not that simple. Fate isn’t a single line; every choice creates a fork. The guidance only gives me a ‘tendency.’ Most of the story is my own invention. Their fate is for them to walk; otherwise, I wouldn’t be writing stories, I’d be writing a new Book of Fate.”
Writing actual destiny wasn’t nearly as exciting as making things up. If she really had the power to write fate, would she be hiding from pursuers?
“However, the fate of the two protagonists in this book is indeed rocky. And it’s strange—the guidance from the Book of Fate was intermittent, like there was a glitch. I’ve never seen such strange guidance. Perhaps there’s a major problem between them.” Yang Xunzhou frowned and sighed, looking a bit regretful.
Yu Yingxia’s expression was stiff. She could tell; the title itself felt like a warning of tragedy. Her heart felt a bit stifled.
This one might have been written in a rush on the road, but the content is the most ‘exciting’ one yet, Yang Xunzhou whispered to Yu Yingxia via voice transmission. She winked playfully, looking forward to Yu Yingxia reading her new work.
Yu Yingxia’s hand holding the book trembled. Sometimes, she really didn’t want things to be that exciting.
Especially with Yan Huaixi lurking right beside her…
Fine. Since Yan Huaixi was so curious, this awkwardness had to be shared.
“I’ll go back and study how to illustrate this properly.” Yu Yingxia held the light book with a gravity as if she were embarking on a suicide mission.
This only made Yan Huaixi more curious. What on earth was hidden in that book to make Yu Yingxia look like that?
Upon returning home, Yu Yingxia locked herself in the study. She told Yan Huaixi to order food from the restaurant if she was hungry; she needed to “research” Yang Xunzhou’s new book.
Perhaps a cat’s curiosity is just that strong—and so is the curiosity of people like cats. Yu Yingxia ignored the gaze behind her; she knew Yan Huaixi was watching her.
Yan Huaixi might endure for a moment, but eventually, she would find a way to peek.
Yu Yingxia sat in the study. After a great deal of mental preparation, she opened the fanfiction of herself and Yan Huaixi. The moment she flipped to the first page of the main text, her face turned bright red.
Yan Huaixi hooked a finger under Yu Yingxia’s chin, forcing her subordinate to look directly into her eyes.
Yu Yingxia’s eyes were brimming with tears of pleasure. She bit her lip hard, refusing to make a sound, but how could her Master let her off so easily? Yan Huaixi kissed her, her movements anything but gentle. The person caught in the throes of passion trembled, and soon lost control, letting out the sounds Yan Huaixi wanted to hear.
“My Left Protector, if you still refuse to confess who is behind you, I shall continue.” Unlike the one drowning in lust, Yan Huaixi’s tone was gentle, but her eyes were a sharp contrast so calm it made Yu Yingxia’s heart ache.
Yu Yingxia slammed the book shut again. She rubbed her temples, her brows knitted tight. She never thought she’d see a smutty fanfic of herself in this lifetime.
It was indeed the “most exciting” one. Most books didn’t jump straight to this level. And why was the “assassination plot” map so short? It jumped straight to the “knife” (angst). As for why she was the one being ravaged… she didn’t even want to complain.
But Sister Yang’s description of Yan Huaixi was incredibly accurate. She did love using gentleness to mask her ruthlessness…
Yu Yingxia suppressed the gloom in her eyes, forcing herself to stop thinking about it.
Fine. Maybe Head Nie should just hurry up and take Sister Yang away. As long as she’s gone, I can destroy this book and make sure it never sees the light of day!
She put the book back on the table. But since that curious bad cat wanted to see it so much, she would give her a chance. Yu Yingxia’s lips curled slightly.
Yan Huaixi paced the courtyard, her gaze uncontrollably drifting toward the study. She figured Yu Yingxia was reading that book, so she secretly manifested a Blood Butterfly to fly in.
Unfortunately, the scene inside disappointed her. Yu Yingxia wasn’t reading the book; she was practicing spells on a sheet of rice paper.
The book sat on her right, seemingly untouched for the time being.
But it didn’t matter. Yan Huaixi had plenty of time to wait. Even if she didn’t see the book, just watching Yu Yingxia’s focused profile was enough to pass the day.
However, curiosity scratched at her heart like a kitten’s claws. It only grew over time.
Yu Yingxia finally emerged at dinner time. She tucked the book into her sleeve, giving Yan Huaixi no chance to sneak a peek.
Yan Huaixi’s smile remained, and Yu Yingxia’s calls of “Sister” were as sweet as ever. Though everything seemed the same, Jiang Li felt a “creepy” sensation that made her instinctively want to stay away from them.
But before she could slip away, Yu Yingxia called out.
“Sister, I don’t know why, but I feel uneasy as soon as it gets dark. I can’t focus on my cultivation. When I close my eyes, I think of those two assassins. Could you ask Doctor Jiang to brew another bowl of calming tonic?” Yu Yingxia gently swayed Yan Huaixi’s hand.
This was a small matter. Yan Huaixi naturally wouldn’t refuse. She even had Jiang Li check her over. Psychological trauma could be major or minor; if it left too deep a mark, it could hinder future cultivation.
Jiang Li found no major issues and could only suggest monitoring her.
As the night deepened and the tonic took effect, Yu Yingxia pleaded with Yan Huaixi to stay with her like the previous night. Yu Yingxia had mastered her tone and movements; Yan Huaixi could never hold out for long before her ice-cold heart softened.
Yu Yingxia “accidentally” left the book by her pillow, then held Yan Huaixi’s sleeve as she chatted about rumors she’d heard. These small actions perfectly displayed her dependency on Yan Huaixi when she was afraid.
Gradually, the medicine kicked in. Yan Huaixi realized the person talking to her had fallen silent. She gently tucked Yu Yingxia’s hand back under the quilt. Then, her gaze was uncontrollably drawn to the book by the pillow.
Yu Yingxia is my subordinate and my rabbit. Her things are mine. I’m just checking it to make sure that woman Yang Xunzhou hasn’t corrupted my well-behaved rabbit. Yes, that’s it.
Yan Huaixi reached out with spiritual energy to lift the book. The moment she flipped to the first page, her gaze froze at the “real” title.
Though names weren’t explicitly used, the phrase “Demonic Sect Master” felt strangely like a reference to herself.
…There are plenty of messy demonic sects, it might not mean me, she thought as she turned to the first page of the text.
She saw the passage. The book nearly fell from her hand.
Yan Huaixi’s breath hitched. In all these years, very few things had caused such a storm in her heart, but Yang Xunzhou had succeeded.
What… what is this?!
Interrogating Yu Yingxia in this manner… how dare Yang Xunzhou write this!
In an instant, Yan Huaixi’s face became a kaleidoscope of colors, but regardless of the shift, the base tone was red.
Did Yu Yingxia read this? Yan Huaixi closed the book. For some reason, her first instinct wasn’t to punish Yang Xunzhou, but to look at the sleeping girl.
The room was silent. Yan Huaixi could only hear her own racing heartbeat. She didn’t understand what her restless mind wanted did she want Yu Yingxia to see it? Or not?
She sat there for a long time, lost in thought. When she snapped back, she opened the book again. She read fast; she finished the entire thing before the night was over.
The summary: she misunderstood Yu Yingxia, who was then suspected and interrogated. The locations: dungeons, bedrooms, hot springs places she could imagine and places she couldn’t. Naturally, it wasn’t a “proper” interrogation, and the tools weren’t “proper” either.
However, she hated the ending. Yang Xunzhou didn’t give them a happy one. If the content hadn’t been so exciting, she would have torn the last few pages out.
Yan Huaixi felt she was a veteran of great storms, but now, when she touched her face, it was burning hot.
The scenes from the book flooded her mind. Yu Yingxia always looked stubborn, but that stubbornness was slowly eroded by desire. In the end, unable to take it, she would wrap her arms around Yan Huaixi’s neck and call out over and over: “Master.”
Yan Huaixi’s breathing turned ragged. She had never thought of such things, so she never expected that a few lines of text could throw her into such disarray.
Even though it was just fiction, her mind uncontrollably visualized it. It was a Yu Yingxia she had never seen. They crossed the boundary of “sisters,” and the churning desire ruthlessly shattered the things Yan Huaixi had once stubbornly denied.
“Master…” a faint, muddled murmur sounded.
Yan Huaixi’s hand holding the book twitched. A flash of panic and guilt crossed her fox-like eyes. She heard Yu Yingxia’s voice not from her imagination, but right beside her.
She looked at the person on the bed. Yu Yingxia wasn’t awake; she was talking in her sleep. A guilty Yan Huaixi breathed a sigh of relief. The candle hadn’t been extinguished yet, and its light illuminated Yu Yingxia’s peaceful sleeping face.
I must be going crazy. It’s all Yang Xunzhou’s fault for writing this trash! Yan Huaixi was eager to shift the blame, but the seed of desire in her heart had already sprouted. How could it be easily uprooted?
Ensuring Yu Yingxia was sleeping soundly and not troubled by nightmares, Yan Huaixi prepared to leave the room that was making her feel “not quite right.” However, her gaze lingered on Yu Yingxia’s lips.
These past few days, she had finally restored the girl’s vitality. Yu Yingxia’s once pale lips were now pink.
What did the ‘Yan Huaixi’ in the book think after tasting those lips?
Very sweet, very soft…
In the dim candlelight, a dazed Yan Huaixi realized she had leaned down. With only an inch of distance left, she was about to kiss Yu Yingxia.
