- Chapter 2 - You Act at Your Leisure, and I Will Just Watch Quietly
Shen Yanchu felt that although those four words stirred up his anxiety, at least they indicated that the ending still held many possibilities.
After pondering for a moment, Shen Yanchu made a grand decision: to sell the items he had brought along in exchange for silver to buy a hearty meal.
The first step for any successful person is to eat a full meal!
Shen Yanchu was utterly wretched. In the town’s pawnshop, he gritted his teeth and pawned his bottom-of-the-trunk treasures in exchange for silver.
His heart ached terribly, but with his stomach rumbling and no other way to get food, he feared he would ascend on the spot, so he had no choice but to part with his treasures.
Unfortunately, the trinkets he took from the Taiyi Sect, while appearing valuable at first glance, were actually only worth enough to buy a single meal.
Shen Yanchu shook his head helplessly, then slowly cast his gaze toward the precious sword that had always followed him from the Taiyi Sect, No Return.
As one knew, in the original text, the sect master of Taiyi doted on the original host immensely! And this No Return sword was precisely what the old Taiyi man had painstakingly traveled far and wide to a freezing, distant land to specially request as a hundred-day-old gift for the original host. Viewed in this light, the sword was undoubtedly an extremely precious existence.
Shen Yanchu gently stretched out his hand, carefully stroking the blade of No Return, and muttered to himself, “Tuotu, look at you. To think you are following a good-for-nothing like me, you are being wronged terribly! Why don’t you just stay right here in this pawnshop? I believe sooner or later someone destined for you will come to redeem you.”
However, before Shen Yanchu’s words had even fully faded, the blade of No Return suddenly gave a violent twist, and its hilt thrust straight into Shen Yanchu’s lower back like lightning.
“Ouch, Tuotu, each of us walks our own path, wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t interfere with each other?” Frightened out of his wits by this sudden strike, Shen Yanchu hurriedly began to plead for mercy.
Yet who would have thought that the moment these words left his mouth, No Return seemed to grow even angrier, unhesitatingly pressing its tip directly against Shen Yanchu’s neck.
“Fine, fine, fine, I was wrong, I was wrong.” Shen Yanchu raised both hands in surrender. Only then did No Return give its body a shake and begin circling Shen Yanchu with an air of arrogant pride.
“Who can save this poor wretch of a child?” Shen Yanchu wailed inwardly. “In this wretched place, nobody can be offended, and now even this sword is bullying me.”
Yet Shen Yanchu was big-hearted; one second he was worrying about his destiny, and the next, pocketing his silver, he scurried off on foot toward a high-end-looking tavern, with an attitude as if he intended to eat the place down to its foundations.
After sweeping through the dishes like a whirlwind, his stomach bulging like a small mountain, Shen Yanchu patted it contentedly and prepared to settle the bill in style.
Reaching into his waist pocket, he found it empty. After feeling frantically up and down, he realized his money pouch had been lifted by some scoundrel. This was brilliant; he was completely dumbfounded.
Rolling his eyes around, he spotted a man in black sitting in the corner, whose entire aura radiated the appearance of a descending God of Wealth.
Who was Shen Yanchu? Having spent all those years in the entertainment industry, he had long since mastered the art of shamelessness.
Without skipping a beat, armed with an acting ability that could rival an Oscar winner, Shen Yanchu crept over in small steps, hung his head low, and let his voice tremble like a sifter. “Kind sir, have mercy. Your humble servant is down on his luck, my business has gone under, my pockets are cleaner than my face, and I cannot even afford this meal. If Your Excellency could show compassion, I am willing to serve as your attendant for a day and attend to your every need.”
This man in black was none other than Ji Yanche. Lifting his gaze, he thought, Well, well, this little pitiful creature looks a mess, but his face is quite something. The red robes made his skin look snowy white with a rosy glow, just like a freshly shelled prawn.
His brows resembled springtime mountains holding distant mist, his eyes shone like autumnal water laden with emotion, his nasal bridge was straight, his lips were red and teeth white, and a cascade of dark hair like a waterfall occasionally concealed half his face, making him look the spitting image of a soul-stealing little goblin.
Ji Yanche thought, Isn’t this Shen Yanchu, the little tyrant of the Taiyi Sect? Just the day before yesterday, I saw him trying to force himself on Su Rongyu in his room, yet this little tyrant is acting quite obediently now.
The dragon race naturally had zero resistance to beauty, and the very first time he laid eyes on Shen Yanchu, he found the little fellow interesting.
Unfortunately, on that day, Shen Yanchu was entirely fixated on Su Rongyu. Seeing that Ji Yanche had ruined his plans, he did not say a word, drew No Return, and tried to pick a fight.
Yet this Shen Yanchu turned out to be nothing more than a paper tiger, fleeing in disgrace after exchanging only a few blows. Now, pretending not to know him and pulling this act, what game was he playing?
The corner of Ji Yanche’s mouth twitched upward as he teased, “An attendant? With your frail arms and weak legs, a gust of wind could blow you away. What could you possibly do?”
Hearing this, Shen Yanchu immediately straightened his back and adopted an earnest expression. “You underestimate me, sir. Although I have a slender build, I can handle heavy labor. Wherever you point, I will go, and whatever you command, I will do.” Ji Yanche let out a sharp chuckle, thinking that with such a small frame, there was no way he could carry anything heavy.
Who would have guessed that Ji Yanche’s brain would short-circuit, causing him to wave a hand grandly. “Fine. Lord here is in a good mood today, I’ll pay for you.” He tossed down the silver, stood up, and walked off. “Keep up.”
Shen Yanchu bloomed with joy internally while crying miserably on the outside, trailing closely behind. In truth, he had already plotted his escape and was just waiting for the right opportunity to slip away.
Little did he know that the moment they reached the doorway, Ji Yanche whirled around as if he had eyes in the back of his head, grabbed Shen Yanchu’s wrist, and smiled half-heartedly. “Little trickster, want to run? Not a chance. From now on, you belong to me.” Frightened into a shiver, Shen Yanchu forced an awkward laugh. “Sir, there’s a huge misunderstanding here.”
“Cut the nonsense,” Ji Yanche interrupted. “A bet is a bet. Come back with me, and let Lord here see just how capable you are.” Dragging Shen Yanchu along, he headed out of town. Shen Yanchu regretted his actions so deeply his intestines turned green, howling internally, “What kind of hornet’s nest have I poked, jumping straight into a fire pit?”
What made matters even more fatal was that when Shen Yanchu later inquired about him, he nearly passed out. The man right before him was none other than Ji Yanche, the overwhelmingly powerful sole true dragon from the original book!
That was a figure whose mere stomp could make the three realms tremble, and he possessed an enigmatic obsession with Su Rongyu. Shen Yanchu’s heart bled; he knew he was in deep trouble now, and if this master were to see through him… he dared not think about it, he dared not think about it.
Although he was one of the top figures in Taiyi, this lord was a dragon who had lived for hundreds of years!
Even though he was panicking wildly inside, Shen Yanchu forced himself to maintain a calm facade, taking small, rapid steps to keep pace while his brain raced frantically, searching for a way out. Just as he was deep in tension, Ji Yanche spoke up abruptly, his voice low and magnetic, “What is your name?”
Shen Yanchu’s heart skipped a beat, and he reacted instantly. “Your humble servant is called Shen Yan. If sir doesn’t mind, you can just call me Xiao Yan.”
With that, he cast a stealthy glance at Ji Yanche, only to see him nod slightly, repeat the name leisurely, and sport a meaningful smile at the corner of his lips—a look that suggested he saw right through his thoughts.
Shen Yanchu felt his scalp prickle, not daring to let out a full breath. Fortunately, Ji Yanche did not press further and strode forward. Shen Yanchu did not dare to delay, hurrying to keep up like a little tail.
Shen Yanchu felt that he truly deserved an award for his performance, having kept his cover completely airtight, little knowing that Ji Yanche had just been watching him act quietly all along.
Ji Yanche’s gaze lingered on Shen Yanchu for a moment, and then he suddenly laughed. Hidden within that smile seemed to be an unfathomable secret as he softly murmured, “Shen Yanchu, you are far more interesting than I imagined.”
