After Transmigrating, I Fell in Love with a Top-Tier Movie Queen - Chapter 7
A wish?
Lin Xin didn’t understand what Ye Linghua meant. What did her wish have to do with anything? They were just strangers who had met by chance; they didn’t owe each other anything.
Ye Linghua had told Zheng Ranwen not to waste her time, perhaps because she disliked her. But because of her job, she had to please Lin Xin.
Was Lin Xin so pitiful that she needed to beg for affection? She didn’t need it.
If you don’t like someone, you don’t need to please them or accommodate them. The wishes of someone who doesn’t like you are worthless. Lin Xin didn’t ask Ye Linghua what she meant. She just said, emotionlessly, “I’ll pay you for the last two days.”
Ye Linghua chuckled. “No need. I don’t need two days’ wages.”
Lin Xin was stunned. Her innocent look made Ye Linghua unable to say anything harsh. Unable to vent her frustration, she ran her hand through her hair, finally holding back her anger. She tried to speak as calmly as possible. “I didn’t do anything for two days, and you cooked for me. It wouldn’t feel right to take your money. Let’s just leave it at that.”
She paused, then added, “Even though I’m leaving, you can always reach out if you need help. Also, don’t believe anything Zheng Ranwen says until she wants to get back together with you.”
Her caring words made Lin Xin’s resolve waver. But thinking about what Ye Linghua had said to Zheng Ranwen, Lin Xin told herself to stay firm. It was enough to have one person she disliked tied to her life. Even if… it was just a housekeeper.
Seeing that Lin Xin didn’t seem to be listening, Ye Linghua sighed and turned to look behind her. The path she had taken to get here, the trees that had been washed by the rain, and the heavy clouds that had filled the sky were all gone. Today, the sky was clear, with only a few small clouds at the top of the mountain. The sun shone brightly, warming the spring air.
Ye Linghua checked her phone. It was 1:42 PM.
“Your luggage?” Lin Xin’s hesitant voice came from behind her.
Ye Linghua didn’t turn around. She just said, “No need. I didn’t bring any luggage when I came. And…”
The wind blew, lifting Ye Linghua’s bangs. She used the back of her hand to shield her eyes from the glaring sun. “If I don’t leave now, I’ll miss my flight.”
Lin Xin was stunned, feeling like something was off. But as she watched Ye Linghua standing in the wind, her dress and hair fluttering, her regretful voice drifted to her on the breeze.
“…You weren’t planning on letting me stay the night anyway, were you?”
Ye Linghua really didn’t cling to her. She came and went with nothing. Lin Xin was alone at the front door of the villa, just like when she had said goodbye to Zheng Ranwen. This villa was supposed to be a home for two people. When one of them left forever, the person left behind felt especially lonely.
The difference was that with Zheng Ranwen, Lin Xin had been entangled in a web of emotions. Saying goodbye to her was a mix of sadness, anger, and maybe even a sense of relief. Too many emotions were intertwined, especially a sense of unwillingness to give in.
But now, looking at Ye Linghua’s back as she left, Lin Xin only felt loneliness. Deep in her lonely heart, she even felt a sense of reluctance. They had only known each other for three days, but it was during her most difficult time. She was supposed to hide in her room, curled up in a corner, crying and feeling angry and unwilling to let go. She would become a person she hated and be trapped in a whirlpool she could never escape. This whirlpool could have trapped her for life.
But that afternoon, Ye Linghua had come with her red umbrella. She had stood in front of Lin Xin, looked at her through the rain, and her eyes, calm with a hint of expectation, were like those of a lover from a past life.
Pah, what am I thinking! Lin Xin hit her head hard, then suddenly paused. The red umbrella?
Right, the red umbrella.
She immediately turned and went to the foyer. Sure enough, a red umbrella was hanging in the umbrella stand. Lin Xin didn’t like such a vibrant color, a color she would never choose for an umbrella, but it looked so natural there. She picked up the umbrella and found that it was surprisingly heavy. On closer inspection, the red was not a blinding scarlet. The handle, shaft, and tip were all one piece and appeared to be made of solid wood. The canopy was made of thick polyester.
Lin Xin knew nothing about umbrellas, but it was clear that this was a beautiful and tasteful umbrella. She’s a housekeeper, but her taste is so good.
Holding the umbrella, Lin Xin turned to go outside, so quickly that she didn’t even change her shoes. Her indoor slippers felt a little rough on the stone path she once loved. When she got to the park in the neighborhood, she still couldn’t see Ye Linghua. Lin Xin, who wasn’t used to exercising, was already out of breath.
But at that moment, she had a strong and unwavering desire to return the umbrella to her. Ye Linghua didn’t have a car, so she couldn’t take the road, which was a long route around the neighborhood. She must have taken the shortcut through the park. But where was she?
Lin Xin didn’t understand why she couldn’t find her when she had so little time. Had she already left? Was she too late?
At that moment, she dejectedly touched the umbrella in her hand. This umbrella might be the only connection between them.
“Wait, it’s sold out? I have to take the train? A 30-hour train ride?”
As if fate were playing a joke, as Lin Xin was about to turn back, she suddenly heard Ye Linghua’s surprised voice coming from the fountain plaza through the trees.
“And, I can’t even get a sleeper car at the last minute!” Ye Linghua sat on the edge of the fountain, one hand supporting her body and the other holding her phone. The walk from the villa was not short, and she was in a bad mood after being kicked out by Lin Xin. She found a place to rest in the park.
Even though it was spring and the sun wasn’t hot, walking for a long time made her feel warm, which made her even more frustrated. It wasn’t until she sat by the fountain, enjoying the spray and the spring breeze, that she felt much cooler. Ye Linghua had no family or friends in Youcheng. After being kicked out by Lin Xin, all she wanted to do was go home.
She couldn’t help but ask the person on the phone, “Are all the economy class tickets on the plane sold out?”
“Not all of them, but economy class is very inconvenient,” the person on the other end replied.
Ye Linghua felt like she was going to spit blood. “What’s so inconvenient about it? I don’t care. Book it for me!” She checked the time. “It will take me an hour and a half to get to the airport. Wait, that’s wrong. I haven’t had lunch yet. I need to eat first.”
Ugh, the airport has restaurants! Ye Linghua rubbed her head hard, feeling confused and unable to figure out where to start.
“Ye Linghua—!!!”
Lin Xin’s voice came from behind her, sounding a little ethereal with the splashing water from the fountain.
Ye Linghua was stunned and turned around. The park in the luxury community was also very well-designed. There were large grassy areas, tall and short trees, an artificial lake in the distance, and the fountain plaza. To get from the fountain to the villas, you had to walk up a flight of stairs. There was a giant teddy bear at the top of the stairs. Lin Xin was standing on the stairs. She was wearing a black dress that swayed in the wind, and she was holding her red umbrella. She looked a little lost.
Ye Linghua slowly stood up. She put away her phone, her head slightly lowered.
Seeing that she wasn’t saying anything, Lin Xin looked even more flustered. She touched the umbrella and said in a low voice, “I came to bring you your umbrella.”
It was a small voice, and the sound of the fountain was louder, but Ye Linghua heard her clearly. She looked at her phone, still on the call, and hung up on the person who was yelling, “Hello, hello, hello!”
Then she walked toward Lin Xin. She stood at the bottom of the stairs and looked up at Lin Xin, who was at the top. From below, she was still a person who would make your heart flutter.
Ye Linghua: “You could have just mailed it back later.”
Lin Xin was speechless. She didn’t want to admit that she hadn’t thought of that. She asked, “Wouldn’t that be a waste of money? The shipping fee isn’t cheap.”
Ye Linghua smiled. “You don’t have to send it back. It’s just an umbrella.”
Lin Xin was stunned again. “I’m not the type of person to take advantage of others.”
Ye Linghua nodded. “Right.”
Seeing that she wasn’t saying anything else, Lin Xin had to speak up. “I thought about it later, and something felt off. Ye Linghua, do you live far from here? So far that you need to take a plane?”
Ye Linghua nodded. “Yes.”
Lin Xin’s heart skipped a beat. She now understood what was wrong. “Why would you come all the way here to work?”
“Do you even have to ask?” Ye Linghua looked at her, her dark eyes so deep that people could get lost in them. She found Lin Xin’s question strange, and her attitude at the moment was even stranger. But Ye Linghua answered anyway. “Because it’s a job!”
“Did you have to come this far to find a job?” Lin Xin asked.
Ye Linghua thought for a moment, then rubbed her forehead, looking a little troubled. “No. I came all this way because it was your job.”
Because of me, she came all this way? Lin Xin looked down and smiled. So, it was because of me? Was I overthinking things? Was I being too sensitive? So, I pushed her away, even though she was just being kind?
Lin Xin laughed at her own selfishness. She couldn’t hurt Zheng Ranwen at all, but she could easily hurt the person who was there for her. She walked down the stairs, holding out the umbrella. “Here, take it back.”
The stairs were wet from the recent rain. She slipped on a fallen leaf and felt her body lose its balance. In that moment, Lin Xin’s mind went blank. She kept thinking about the past two days and was embarrassed to realize…
Why, why did I have to fall down the stairs twice?
