The space shuttle, however, was indoors and underground. The track extended beneath the surface, and all the eye could see was darkness. There were only occasional glimpses of starlight and meteors—virtually nothing was visible.

Sitting in the car, all they could hear was the screams of the people around them and the strong wind rushing at their faces.

Since they couldn’t see the track or the direction they were traveling, in such darkness, the fear was less about the high speed and more about the unknown direction.
